Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 7/7/16

1:26
Eno Sarris: oh man this takes me back… to 1993

12:01
Kilgore: How much has Vizcaino’s trade value fallen? He’s been pretty bad the past couple weeks.

12:01
Eno Sarris: Hopefully it’s more his injury history in the past that’s keeping buyers away more than the last few appearances.

12:01
Bork: Hello, friend!

12:01
Eno Sarris: hello, friends!

12:01
Bork: I recently found out I’m going to be a father. What are some names that are sure to guarantee the child will be a success in life? I’m looking for 80 grade baseball names that I can use while Borkwife is drugged up after giving birth.

12:02
Eno Sarris: I read once that alliteration was a big deal for success so Bork Bork zooms to the top of the list.

12:03
DB: Should we read into Ned Yost bringing in Herrera into the 8th inning of a tie game last night that he might use Soria in the 9th with Davis out?

12:03
Eno Sarris: Yes. It’s terrible and I don’t understand it, but yes. Role is huge.

12:03
Dave: Over/under 10 saves for Adam Ottavino this season?

12:04
Eno Sarris: Not sure he’s going to sit at the top end velocity that he showed before he was hurt. We talked about him sitting 93ish, and how he felt loose and weird in his elbow as he was throwing so hard. At 93, a righty, I think he could platoon with McGee, but hard to give him over 10 saves.

12:04
Danny Almonte: Are you more likely to give some GMs the benefit of the doubt than others if they make a head-scratching move? Like if Theo seemingly overpays in a trade vs. Preller doing a similar move.

12:05
Eno Sarris: Anthopolous used to get that treatment, but it can come and go unless you’re Theo.

12:05
Paul: How does one define grassy IPAs? And what would be a decent example from the Bay Area?

12:06
Eno Sarris: The closest we have are some of the Cellarmaker beers, like Dobis. Grassy is a way to describe the fresh bitterness of the hops, and when paired against the thick mouthfeel of an opaque beer, and juicy aromas and tastes of certain hops, you’ve got the trendiest IPAs in the business right now.

12:06
Sir Nerdlington: Double Jack used to be my go-to, but I’m finding it too malty lately. Old batches or have my taste buds changed from brighter, hoppier offerings?

12:06
Eno Sarris: Our tastes have changed.

12:06
daneyko: Drew Smyly will bounce back after the ASG ? BABIP: ,313 at the moment.

12:07
Eno Sarris: His curve is a little different. The run environment suggests he might actually run a 1.33 HR/9 going forward. I’ll give him some Ted Lilly type stats, adjusted for our time: 3.75+/1.2+/9k9+

12:08
Buctober: CAMINEROS BACK ENO

12:08
Eno Sarris: yeah he has looked sexy time, and he’s getting higher leverage innings already.

12:08
Nick: #1 overall in the NFBC and just lost Kershaw. Hunker down with quality middle relievers or risk it with iffy starters?

12:09
Eno Sarris: I’m hopecasting a short time on the DL for him. I’d be into an iffy starter if his schedule looked good, but if you’re protecting an ERA/WHIP lead, go with the relievers.

12:09
Andrew: Remember when Giancarlo Stanton was the worst player ever in the history of baseball forever?

12:09
Eno Sarris: Now he’s the best!

12:09
Sailor Jerry: So without a single PA above AA Andrew Benintendi is currently projected for a 110 wRC+.. I don’t really have a question, just wut

12:10
Eno Sarris: When we were in Staten Island, our man Mike Holly that works there said that he was the only player he’d seen go into the water there, and that Benintendi did it twice. As a visiting player.

12:10
spencer kieboom: ceiling on Joe Ross? legit fip and era, still developing changeup.

12:10
Eno Sarris: I have some hope that his change is better than his brother’s, but I think a realistic ceiling is Tyson Ross.

12:11
Mike: may your ludes today be bountiful and rich

12:11
Larry Bernandez: Hi Bork!

12:11
Fart_Balloon: FRANK. CATALANOTTO.

12:11
Eno Sarris: Hey we’re hitting the ground running.

12:12
Pretty Tony: Love you ENO. I’m in first by 30 points and have been dangling Fulmer at a keepable price (Al-only). Sent an offer that was accepted immediately, to my dismay. I sent Fulmer and Park for Smyly and Sano. Tell me I’m not a total moron?

12:12
Eno Sarris: It’s fine. If you’re winning, you get slightly more bankable late year innings plus the better hitter. I love love Fulmer, but you got the best bat.

12:13
yojiveself: hello there, my fine feathered friend. which SS would you keep next year – seager at $25 or Story at $6?

12:13
Eno Sarris: Too much surplus value on that Story price.

12:13
Guest: Over his last six games, Dylan Bundy has thrown 14 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run with four walks and 19 strikeouts. Bundy’s fastball was touching 97 mph repeatedly yesterday. Over his first 21 innings this season, he fanned 10. Over his last 17 innings, he has struck out 22 batters. Is he back?

12:13
Eno Sarris: He’s a great reliever! I’m not sure he could do any of this as a starter though.

12:14
Andy: Time to board the Max Kepler train before it picks up too much steam? Seems like he could put up sneaky Top 50 OF production the rest of the way if he continues to play every day.

12:14
Eno Sarris: Yeah he’s ownable in all leagues.

12:14
Erik: Even Clayton Kershaw can’t have a true talent walk rate of 0.67 BB/9…can he?

12:15
Eno Sarris: Hey! From my piece on robo umps, umps are only 85% correct. If Kershaw was a true talent 0BB guy, and half the blown calls went against him, he’d still have to deal with 7 extra ball calls. I’m not mathy enough to finish this equation, but it seems that even if he was a .7BB/9 true talent guy, it’s more likely he’d still walk one a game.

12:17
Bryan: Which of these guys do you like most to provide some power while hitting for a decent average over the next month or so: J. Ramirez, Kang, Dietrich, Flores, Gregorius, Freese, N. Walker?

12:17
Eno Sarris: Walker Ramirez Kang. Kang might be best bat overall, but he might also hit .250.

12:17
Houzer : My Carrasco and Osuna for his Arrieta? redraft

12:17
Eno Sarris: no.

12:17
Eno Sarris: Carrasco, he good.

12:17
The Man with the Plan: Is Junior Guerra real? No, not in the literal sense but in the Corey Kluber sense (late bloomer).

12:17
Eno Sarris: yeah he was a catcher before, hence the late bloomage. I love his pitches. More strikeouts coming to offset more walks.

12:18
big boy: Eno! I own $1 giolito and $1 urias in a 12 team, H2H Pts, $260 – but need to decide whether to resign at $5 per year, up to 3 extra years end of this season. Do I go long on both? Of the two, who do you see having the best next 4 years?

12:18
Eno Sarris: I like Urias better but I’d be careful. In those kinds of leagues I rarely, if ever, extended a pitcher.

12:19
Johnny5Alive: expectations for glasnow today? do you think hes up ROS?

12:19
Eno Sarris: I’m worried that his command isn’t right. I’m not a huge fan. Change isn’t quite there, or command.

12:20
Bob: What are your expectations for Brandon McCarthy ROS?

12:20
Eno Sarris: Good season. 3.4/1.15/8K9 type of season. Velo was there, and command wasn’t lacking.

12:21
Danny Almonte: There are obviously other factors, but in general would you say that speed adds more value on the basepaths or in the outfield?

12:21
Eno Sarris: Outfield. The basepaths are trickier, there’s more to learn to convert speed into value.

12:21
Team Ramrod: I saw Barry Bonds talking about Ichiro’s power, how he could hit home runs if he wanted. I grew up watching Tony Gwynn and I believe I remember him saying the same thing. So then went and looked at Tony’s career numbers and then looked at Ichiro’s numbers. I’ve always considered Tony Gwynn the best hitter of my lifetime, but damn, his numbers make Ichiro look like an average hitter. I forgot just how incredible a hitter Tony Gwynn was.

12:22
Eno Sarris: Yeah Gwynn had more doubles power. It has to do with how Ichiro is running out of the box as he hits. In order to hit for power, he has to sell out and pull everything down the line, which would make him a predictable hitter and much worse. Love Ichiro, but Gwynn was the business.

12:22
Erik: Would it ever make sense for a team out of the race to nevertheless be deadline buyers to load up for next year? Given the weak upcoming free agent market, would it ever make sense for a team like the Phillies to look into buying now, rather than next winter? Or are prices significantly higher now?

12:22
Eno Sarris: Prices higher now.

12:22
Eric: If you’re not in contention in a keeper league, when do you start thinking about adding the less heralded prospects to your bench? Guys like Winker, Dahl, Musgrove?

12:23
Eno Sarris: Now.

12:24
Danny Almonte: Article idea: Matching up certain beers to certain players (Matt Kemp is Red Stripe, etc.)

12:24
Eno Sarris: Old now though.

12:25
ryN: Do you agree with your boy Pod that Fulmer is a prime sell high guy?

12:25
Eno Sarris: I mean he may have an innings limit, but no on talent. His changeup was the 11th-best pitch in baseball on my list today, and it’s his third-best pitch.

12:26
Danny Almonte: Does working in baseball like this make your personal baseball fandom increase or decrease?

12:26
Eno Sarris: Decrease on the team level. Increase on the player level. I watch baseball to see certain players now.

12:26
Danny Almonte: Better pitch repertoire for a closer:

12:26
Eno Sarris: Roberto Osuna? If we talking three pitches, he’s one of the few that has three.

12:27
Paul D: Eno, what’s realistic ROS projections for Marcus Semien?

12:27
Eno Sarris: .250/12/5. Dude’s going to go .250/30/10.

12:28
Eric: Who are you eyeing for spec saves as the trade deadline approaches?

12:30
Eno Sarris: Doubt many closers change teams. It’s always more bluster than actual movement in that department. I do like Mauricio Cabrera if Vizcaino moves. I suppose if Miller goes to the Giants, he probably closes. Ryan Madson could leave (I like Ryan Dull)…. isn’t that about it?

12:30
Carlos: I watched Bartolo’s last start against the Cubs. Broadcast mentioned an interview with d’Arnaud where he said Bartolo “pitches with the wind.” Obviously definition of crafty veteran right there, but have you done any research on how different pitch types would be aided by wind direction/speed?

12:31
Eno Sarris: I bet he was talking about pull/push and where the wind is blowing in the outfield. Arrieta talked to me about pitching differently based on how the wind was going in the outfield in Wrigley.

12:31
Tim: Sonny Gray and Sano for corey seager and Glasnow?

12:31
Eno Sarris: yes, but mostly just to get Seager.

12:32
JTP: Still hope for Rodon this season? I can possibly snag Hamels for Rodon and another piece in my dynasty league.

12:32
Eno Sarris: I might wait another start. H was really good for four starts there. With a velo increase.

12:32
DB: Scale of 1-10 how worried are you about the Harvey injury?

12:32
Eno Sarris: Thoracic outlet is serious. 7.

12:32
Ben: Thoughts on saisons and farmhouse ales? Just discovered a bunch of Stillwater Artisnal ales around here (Cellar Door, Debutante), and damn they’re great.

12:33
Eno Sarris: Saison Dupont was the reason I got into craft beer. Used to be into pilsners and used that as my gateway.

12:33
Cliff: Spork Bork…show versatility.

12:33
Seabass: Gotta catch them all… Eno-mon!

12:33
Bork Jr.: Dad? Dad, it that you?!?!? #ludes

12:34
Fan: Dude Eno we need confidence error measures with WAR! I want to know how confident the models are on setting that number. 😐

12:34
Eno Sarris: Would be pretty hard to show in a leaderboard. Perhaps in the WAR graphs?

12:34
Seabass: Everyone stop typing and listen! We all need to listen more often!

12:34
Eno Sarris: All I hear is Chris Russo yelling at me. Back to typing.

12:34
gee: Best NA stash for a redraft: Bregman, Benintendi, Judge

12:34
Eno Sarris: Bregman.

12:34
Buctober: Whos more likely to turn things around? Cutch or Liriano? both have looked very bad and helpless

12:34
Eno Sarris: Cutch. he does this sometimes and comes out of it.

12:35
Tom: Think Trea Turner gets meaningful PT either in the infield or outfield this year?

12:35
Eno Sarris: Outfield maybe. They just don’t seem to trust his glove at short.

12:35
JP: Maine “Lunch” is now available in So Cal. Found it at Select Tap Room on tap in Redondo Beach!

12:35
Eno Sarris: It’s v good.

12:35
Pat: I remember on one of the podcasts that you sorted by how teams do against curveballs. How did you do that again? I gotta get better at streaming and wanna start looking deeper at stuff

12:36
Curious George: Just curious. I’m currently a college student studying Pre-Law in undergrad. My minor is rhetorical writing and the only field I’ve ever considered other than Law would be writing about sports. How does one break into the field of sports journalism? Have to know someone, specific requirements, etc? Or is it more of a produce some work and if people like it you gain notoriety? Thanks, sorry for the non-baseball question, just super interested in your profession haha

12:38
Eno Sarris: Plenty of former lawyers in baseball writing! The standard response is to find your niche. I guess that’s true, but it took me a while. I wrote about all fantasy sports, and then baseball, made a break in being an early FG-style fantasy writer, won an award, got lucky, did some saber writing for Mets sites (Amazin Ave whatup), got hired by Jonah Keri for Bloomberg (thank you thank you), almost took a job at MLB.com editing, trained with them, and then got the call from Appelman. So it’s really about writing. Write. Do your law thing, but write. If you’ve got something to say it will come out and people will notice.

12:39
bakkemon: you said in the podcast if you liked odorizzi, you’d be happy with guerra. would you go far enough to suggest dropping odo (or kazmir) for him? (12-team that plays more like 14/keep 8)

12:39
Eno Sarris: Projections are pretty much identical and Odorizzi has better command. I’d probably keep Odo.

12:39
mateoloco: Hallertau blanc hops = grassy to my basic palate

12:40
Danny Almonte: Hypothetically (purely hypothetical), one has an unhealthy irrational love of Dragon’s Milk. What would be a similar alternative beer?

12:40
Eno Sarris: Have to think you’d like Left Hand Milk Stout, Madagascar from 4 Hands, Gingerbread Stout from Hardywood. Look for Milk Stouts.

12:40
JacklElliot: chances Ryu stays in the rotation ROS…keep in 14-tm mixed?

12:40
Eno Sarris: Pretty good.

12:40
Pete: Is “this” Jake Lamb sustainable?

12:41
Eno Sarris: 25+ HR more than 35+, but I really like him, have for a while.

12:41
Bork: Will Beergraphs ever expand beyond US?

12:41
Eno Sarris: here’s Canada http://beergraphs.com/leaderboards/?cc=CA

12:41
Eric: Planning a trip to the Northwest (Portland area up to Vancouver). Any breweries I MUST go see?

12:41
Eno Sarris: Cascade, Boneyard, Crux.

12:41
Jeff: Are Aaron Nola’s current issues fixable?

12:42
Eno Sarris: yes I think so. It’s a command thing right now, and he’s a command wunderkind.

12:42
Shin soo-Choo Express: i have to let go of Coco Crisp or Max Kepler (hoping to trade one but either way one has to go). Who do I move and who do I keep?

12:42
Eno Sarris: Crisp drop.

12:42
Alex: Taking a trip through Arizona this month, what should I have on my beer check list?

12:42
Eno Sarris: Arizona Wilderness. Fate and Papago in Scottsdale.

12:42
The other Kyle: % chance these guys get traded to the AL this season: Bruce, Moss, Inciarte, Pederson.

12:42
Eno Sarris: Bruce highest at like 65%, the rest probably less than 10%.

12:43
Guest: any chance you’ll ever do aanother fg audio with Carson?

12:43
Eno Sarris: Bug him!

12:43
Bryan: I’m on pace to go around 100 innings over our limit. Dealt my depth to land Price, so now my starters are Scherzer, Price, Cueto, Tanaka, Wright. What would be your strategy to limit the innings in the second half?

12:43
Eno Sarris: Bench Wright most of the time?

12:45
Steve: You must not listen to Carson’s podcasts. He’s told the Benintendi story twice now.

12:45
Eno Sarris: Wait don’t tell Carson that.

12:46
Tom in Springfield: Eno, What does ROS Albert Almora look like, and does he have a place on this roster?

12:46
Eno Sarris: Disappointed by his contact rate. Fowler coming back will probably send him back down.

12:46
ya boi: Is there anything to looking at exit velocity minus pitch velocity? To see which hitters are adding the most velocity when making contact?

12:47
Eno Sarris: Exit velocity is like 85% bat speed, 15% pitch speed.

12:47
Snowflake: The maintenance people in my office are on strike. WE’RE RUNNING OUT OF TP HERE! HELP!!!!!

12:47
Eno Sarris: I NEED TP FOR MY BUNGHOLE

12:48
Nelson: I recently had a single hop Mosaic beer and loved it. What are some very common Mosaic forward IPAs I can try?

12:50
Eno Sarris: Founders has a good mosaic pale ale. I need to write a piece like this!

12:50
AJ: Giants bullpen situation, on a scale from 1-10?

12:51
Eno Sarris: 4-5. Casilla is okay, Osich has the tools, Strickland and Law have the velocity. None is amazing, but that’s enough to build. They do probably need a bit more.

12:51
Smooth Jazz: I wouldn’t say I’m interested in hunting a man for sport. But I’m not NOT interested either.

12:51
Eno Sarris: Best watch out for my kung fu

12:52
Guest: Is it time to snag R Iglesias, in hopes he’s the new CIN closer?

12:52
Eno Sarris: They pitching him two innings at a time. It’s weird. I doubt he’s the closer.

12:53
coach: Where did all of degrom’s ks go? Are they starting to come back?

12:53
Eno Sarris: He’s doing just fine. Good command of that fastball helped him survive a velo drop.

12:53
Steve: Re: Joe Ross.. You mean Tyson Ross with a full BB/9 fewer, right?

12:53
Eno Sarris: Sure, but also fewer Ks, so overall package will look similar.

12:54
dril: “This Whole Thing Smacks Of Gender,” i holler as i overturn my uncle’s barbeque grill and turn the 4th of July into the 4th of Shit

12:54
Zork: You were eaten by a Grue.

12:54
hscer: Kang might also be under arrest

12:54
Eno Sarris: Welp.

12:54
Jon: Will you be doing an updated pitcher rankings before/after/during the ASB? Please say yes. Pretty please.

12:54
Eno Sarris: I will.

12:54
Biscuit: Gonna be a good weekend….lots of clean underwear in the drawer.

12:55
Pie: What SP do you see as a good fit if the Astros buy at the trade deadline?

12:56
Eno Sarris: Something tells me more Rich Hill than Julio Teheran. Spend less to get a guy that has more interesting spin rates.

12:56
SoupDawg: D’Arnaud has begun to show signs. Grandal and Beef on my wire. Who’s best ROS? Or should I deal Kluber for Posey (both are 6 buck keepers forever)

12:56
Eno Sarris: Go cheap. Keep TDA.

12:56
Henry Rollingardner: Does Montero get the boot when Soler comes back? More C for Contreras? I mostly like Montero, but he’s a fabulous opportunity for improvement

12:57
Eno Sarris: Contreras’ D left Lackey talking about his future, so I bet Contreras goes back to minors.

12:57
Biscuit: Flamingos and giraffes don’t make any sense.

12:57
Eno Sarris: inoright

12:57
Scott: Hey Eno, I’m looking forward to the Chicago Meetup, but can you fill me in on what the event is going to entail? There are so many people! Are there speakers, or just a general hangout?

12:57
Eno Sarris: We just hang out and talk. It’s really fun.

12:57
Josh: Are you still buying Leonys? He’s been striking out a lot and has stopped running…

12:58
Eno Sarris: Hamstring injury could have something to say about the running, but I bet the break will help there.

12:58
Otis: YEEHAW! BEER, NO FEAR, BALLS, NO FALLS! LUDES NO TUDES!

12:58
forever it: Dahl is less-heralded?

12:58
Eno Sarris: In certain lists I guess.

12:58
The Decadent Moose: Germany plays France in a couple hours for a spot against Portugal in the Final of the EUFA tournament. You watching?

12:58
Eno Sarris: Natuerlich.

12:58
Steve: Has anyone notice Kendrys Morales over the last three weeks?

12:59
Eno Sarris: Yeah can you believe he played in left field?

12:59
Adam Duvall: HOW MANY TATERS WILL I HIT?

12:59
Eno Sarris: All of them! Duvall top ten on pitches in the zone and all those pitches going to be in the zone.

12:59
O.D.B.: Now dance like you got Pomeranz in the pants. Now freeze like you in Stephen Wright’s knuckle ball trance.

1:00
Jerry Sands’ Smile: Hey Eno! What do you expect from Ventura and Liriano for the rest of this season?

1:00
Eno Sarris: Not much.

1:00
Big (actually quite small) Mike: In a 12-team keep forever league, looking for a RP with good stats and a chance at closing in the not-too-distant future. How would you rank Edwin Diaz, Michael Lorenzen, Hunter Strickland, and Brandon Maurer? Thanks for your advice.

1:00
Eno Sarris: Maurer Diaz STrick

1:00
Steve: Just got engaged, any advice?

1:00
Eno Sarris: Destination wedding. No haggling over the invite list. Invite em all and half come.

1:00
Wardo: Over/under: My googly or my moogly?

1:01
Eno Sarris: First let me google your moogle.

1:01
Josh: Hi Eno. How likely do you think it is that the Pirates trade Melancon and Feliz takes over as the closer?

1:01
Eno Sarris: Not likely.

1:01
Bart: Hold Nola until after ASG and see if he can work out his ‘mental/mechanics’ issues?

1:01
Eno Sarris: Yes.

1:02
Steve: I think it was on Effectively Wild last week when someone said that Zach Britton might be the second best one pitch pitcher ever, behind Mariano. Do you think this might be true?

1:03
Eno Sarris: I’ve ranked Britton’s sinker the best pitch in baseball two years in a row and told everyone to get Sam Dyson because it was a reasonable fascimile of that pitch. But Treinen is close, too, so that’s three guys that sorta throw it… though two are righties. I guess Kenley Jansen sorta throws the Mo cutter… It’s defensible.

1:03
Terry: I’m lucky enough to have Trumbo, Villar, Myers, Ozuna and Segura this year, but it strikes me that I’m sitting on the all-time sell-high team. Who should be the top priorities to deal?

1:03
Eno Sarris: Segura, maybe Trumbo. I like Segura enough in fantasy, but this is about the best he can do.

1:04
forever it: Tyson Ross injured his ankle while in his hotel room, delaying his rehab, because Padres

1:04
Snarfle: Hyenas have one of the highest kill rates of any predator, yet Fangraphs rarely writes about them. I thought this site was about the unglamarous, yet effective. Is it because once you start talking about that, you kinda have to mention their method of marking territory, which uses multiple intra-butt glands to send messages separately to friend and foe?

1:04
Danny Almonte: Which closer would be the best starter, and which starter would be the best closer?

1:04
Eno Sarris: Osuna, Pineda.

1:04
Bill: DeScallopini looked good vs CHC. I know you have been a fan — still happy with current version?

1:04
Eno Sarris: Good nickname. I like that slider/curve combo, he’s settled in there, and the Ks are coming. yes.

1:05
BigPapi: On the podcast (Sleeper and the Bust) you mentioned you’re still holding on to Duda. I am as well, but I am in a 10-tm league. I don’t have anyone else on the DL thus far. Should I continue to hold hoping he can provide the power?

1:05
Eno Sarris: I’d move on. He’s probably at least a couple weeks out still, probably more.

1:05
Sammy Meatballs is a loon: Heading out to Concord today. Can we get confirmation that Monument Liquors is still dealing the Pliny???

1:05
humphrey: Stroman has thrown 38% sliders his past two starts, way more than ever. 25% whiff rate on it those two starts as well, also way more than ever. Maybe not coincidentally, his best two starts since May 1. What are your expectations for him ROS? Worth holding onto in a 14-team keeper?

1:06
Eno Sarris: “throw your best pitch more often” is a thing people do, it worked for Shoemaker. I’d hold.

1:06
Kevin: Should I hold onto hope for Buchter or do you think Maurer will hold it down despite a few missteps?

1:06
Eno Sarris: I have hope for Buchter still.

1:07
Alex: Seems like you guys do a lot of big data and data analytics in this line of work. Were most of you comp sci majors? I ask because I am an Operations Research major who is curious about possibly getting into sports analytics at some point. How realistic is that with my major?

1:07
Eno Sarris: I don’t think any of us were comp sci majors except for maybe Dolinar. Maybe Appelman. The rest of us are just an amalgamation of self taught bumblers.

1:07
Eno Sarris: Or maybe I’m projecting, maybe I’m the only self taught bungler. But I have degrees in Art History, Psychology, and Media Studies.

1:08
Hannah Hochevar: Hi Eno. You once said on a Pod that Mengeden’s funky delivery would serve him well his first time through the league. Has that stance changed (+ or -)? Would you start him (AL only) vs. Stros tomorrow? Thanks!

1:08
Eno Sarris: He has legit deceptive movement, too, which I discovered in prep for our convo. Over the top release plus good horizontal movement. I’d start him in ALO.

1:08
Hannah Hochevar: I’m holding out for a hero. But will accept a gyro.

1:09
CamdenWarehouse: Who would be the spork of MLB players?

1:09
Eno Sarris: So, mildly useful in multiple ways, but somehow less than the parts? Danny Santana?

1:09
humphrey: Is there a time and a place for drinking a crappy domestic macrobrew lager?

1:09
Eno Sarris: Flippy cup race, on a boat, at a sporting event without other options.

1:10
Billy Beane: Is Ryan Dull a top reliever? His peripherals are meh, but he has the record for most runners inherited stranded and looks like an IV of ice water would raise his body temperature.

1:10
Eno Sarris: Really really really good slider.

1:10
BigPapi: Based on the exit velocity piece that you recently wrote, should I be selling Danny Salazar high (10-tm standard)?

1:10
Eno Sarris: He has the propensity for throwing dick-high fastballs down the middle. it’s going to make him less than his stuff always.

1:11
Northsider: I heard you on the ESPN-Chicago radio station while driving on my lunch break. I instantly thought, “Sideshow Bob, yakking it up on the old yak box.”

1:11
The Cincinnati Kid: Potential chat host tip: Post time question was asked so we know where you’re at in queue, how back-logged, etc.?

1:11
Eno Sarris: 12:36 oh man

1:12
Robert: It really doesn’t sound like you give Estevez much of a shot at holding the closer job.

1:12
Eno Sarris: No, I don’t think so, not with McGee and Ottavino behind him.

1:12
Bork: Hi Bork Jr hope you’re enjoying Borkwifes womb. Glad to see our wifi is in there.

1:13
yanksfan: would the yanks be better off trying to package miller, chapman and beltran together for a better return? Or do they hold more value individually?

1:13
Eno Sarris: Man that would reshape a bullpen pretty quickly, wouldn’t it? I’d love to see this.

1:13
Dock Ellis: Brewers pen for spec saves? Does Jeffress go this July? Hard tho because Smith or Thornbeeg also could move.

1:14
Eno Sarris: They holding out for a Kimbrel package but is someone going to give the Kimbrel package for Jeffress?

1:14
Nelson: Do releivers generally have lower babips against than starters?

1:14
Mike_C: Which is more likely, Pirates Trade Austin Meados, Pirates Convert Austin Meadows to a corner Outfielder, Pirates Convert McCutchen to a corner outfielder?

1:15
Eno Sarris: Meadows has a minus arm. Cutch trade just seems to make the most sense.

1:15
Matthew S: Not a question for Eno, but a comment for Curious George. FWIW, I’m in a similar boat as you, just a couple of years in the future as I’m going into my second year of law school. I’ve started doing some baseball writing on the side, and it’s gone well so far, so go for it. Just some words of encouragement.

1:15
Josh: Which breweries in Boston are 80-grade visits? And what Gose should I buy tonight?

1:16
Eno Sarris: Trillium for take away, they don’t have a tap room in there, but you can drink around the corner at Row 24. Go to Night Shift. I like the Anderson Valley Blood Orange Gose.

1:16
Marty: To Curious George: Apply at beyondtheboxscore. No prior writing experience needed, site is hiring.

1:16
FANTHEAD: Hey Eno! First-time caller. And I am pretty sure I need your acute noggin for this one: I’m in a Keepers’ where we have a mid-season draft in a few days in which we get to pick one player from all the players we didn’t draft in April. Presuming J. Guerra, MLK, is picked by my turn, which of the two remaining SPs would you favor: D. Duffy, KC; D. Mengden, OAK; B. McCarthy, LAD; and/or M. Shoemaker, ST.L? THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!

1:16
Eno Sarris: I never thought I’d say Duffy, but Duffy. then Mengden.

1:17
Rusty Kuntz: Would you rather have Addison Russell than Jhonny Peralta and Jose Reyes as everyday SS? Obviously, I have the latter.

1:17
Eno Sarris: Yes.

1:17
Chris: Any breweries in Miami area?

1:17
Eno Sarris: All in the Wynwood Walls. Concrete Beach and J Wynwood.

1:18
HappyFunBall: Pineda, McCullers, or Guerra in a 12x Mixed?

1:18
Eno Sarris: McCullers

1:18
Bork: Any do/donts when dealing with a pregnant woman? Trying to prepare myself.

1:18
Eno Sarris: Don’t do anything. Do everything.

1:18
Sammy Meatballs is a loon: Solar = Puig 2.0? Will show flashes of what could be, but just never put it all together consistently?

1:19
Eno Sarris: Oh god. Oh no. And they my newest form of kryptonite. Dripping with tools, occasionally good plate approach will bring me to my knees.

1:19
Biscuit: Man I gotta poop before this meeting but I’m not going to get a chance to because I have to prepare the visuals. This is going to be a long meeting.

1:19
Eno Sarris: And if you take the computer into the bathroom with the ear buds in people will get the wrong idea.

1:19
Mike_C: Trout will be embarking on his age 28 season when his current contract expires. Do you see him leaning towards setting a new contract record, or hunting for rings approach to free agency.

1:20
Eno Sarris: Sign with a big market team that’s competitive. Like the Dodgers.

1:20
Brett: Why doesn’t mauer have more HR? His exit velocity keeps going up and has great batted ball rates and fb distance… Am I missing something?

1:20
Eno Sarris: Extreme Oppo guy.

1:20
Jeff in T.O.: I used to work with a Gilbert Gilbert and asked him why his parents would do that to him. Turns out his dad was also named Gilbert Gilbert.

1:20
Eno Sarris: Rougned(s) say hi.

1:21
Guest: Eno how you see the ceiling of David Dahl… You think he will be starting OF for Rockies next season?

1:21
Eno Sarris: They should trade CarGo, in which case Dahl could do a lite version but will they?

1:22
bombsquad rabbi: You know, if it weren’t for gravity we probably wouldn’t be able to discern an appreciable difference between blankets and curtains.

1:22
KDL: I’m curious to find out if CJ Cron’s improvements are legit. What should I be looking for when I do this analysis? What do you think?

1:22
Eno Sarris: Swing rates. His contact rate is up, and his walk rate, but why? He’s swinging at more pitches in the zone and fewer outside the zone. I like that.

1:22
Eric: Is it worth holding onto Buchter if I’m not in contention this year in a keeper? Should I try to trade or cut for a guy like Winker?

1:23
Eno Sarris: Winker more interesting for you.

1:23
Diamond Joe Quimby: Any advice on getting through to league-mates on trades. I have affordable assets like D Murphy, Franco, Bregman, and AJ Reed waiting for a trade. Why won’t someone give me a good starter? I’m trying to win this year!

1:23
Eno Sarris: This won’t work for everyone, but try just including a link to someone writing on them. BP had Bregman really high on their midseason list. Someone must have written about Murphy’s pull philosophy.

1:24
The other Kyle:

1:24
Eno Sarris:

1:24
The other Kyle: I’m not NOT licking toads

1:24
Erik: It’s easier to upgrade a stars and scrubs lineup at the deadline right? Does that mean it’s the best way to build a team, or does it take more resources to build a stars and scrubs lineup than a balanced lineup in the first place?

1:25
Eno Sarris: This is an interesting thing with regards to the Dodgers. I would say that building a team thinking you’ll upgrade at the deadline is a costly way to do it. That’s when upgrades cost the most! So I’d rather build with depth to overcome the coming injuries, and spend on smaller deals at the deadline. Dodgers can still go get a reliever.

1:26
Willis: Frustrated Heyward owner: is dealing him for Kepler in a keeper league selling way too low?

1:26
Eno Sarris: If it’s not OBP… I might go for it. I love Kepler.

1:26
Duke Silver: Kang might get deported

1:26
Eno Sarris: This is a crazy thing.

1:26
forever it: Favorite Rare Barrel beer? I took over a dynasty team from one of the founders…let’s just say his beer-making is better than his roster-making was when I took it over

1:27
Eno Sarris: Ensorcelled, their dark raspberry sour. And that’s funny! He should have called me up, I’d have given him a mainline into my email for a beer a month.

1:27
Seth: how long does bud norris stay in the LAD rotation?

1:27
Eno Sarris: One more start at most?

1:27
Shawn: Teku glass – worth the hype? Or does it not matter all that much?

1:28
Eno Sarris: Eh, just a thing for people to give us on our birthdays and fathers days. it’s a bit better, maybe.

1:28
Little Don: What is different about Carlos Gomez today vs 2 months ago?

1:29
Johnson: You’re nuts if you think Contreras is going back to minors. That’s bold Eno.

1:29
Eno Sarris: If Soler has options left, than it’s him. I just don’t know that they making him a catcher after the comments by pitchers about his defense/calling/framing.

1:29
Ralph: Very encouraged by your evaluation of Taillon. On the podcast you alluded that he could develop into a 5)

1:29
Eno Sarris: Oh better than that I think.

1:29
Lonely in Kalamazoo: Eno, can you explain why the Orioles are trying to send down Kim? What more does the guy have to do?

1:30
Eno Sarris: I think that was just a mistake. Jonah retweeted an old tweet and they ran with it on RotoWorld.

1:30
Meep: Why don’t you like Gausman? Was offered Verlander for him and turned it down… Granted it’s a 3-year keeper lg

1:30
Eno Sarris: I do! I just don’t know he’s much better than this without a better breaking ball.

1:30
CamdenWarehouse: Stop calling home runs taters! That’s a worse name for them than dongs.

1:31
Eno Sarris: you don’t like to talk about jacking dongs?

1:31
too many closers: Trumbo dongers: +/- 41.5

1:31
Eno Sarris: Over. He has 26!!

1:31
A. Reitz: Could you elaborate on the, “I don’t extend SP in keeper league formats?”

1:32
Eno Sarris: If you’re talking about escalating contracts, and paying for a pitcher for multiple years, I just find they get injured in those years. If you’re talking about keeping a pitcher for one year, sure. I’ll keep 1 out of 6, 2 out of 10, 3 out of 12+.

1:32
Marty: Must visit brews in portland ME? Other than the obvious Maine Brewing

1:32
Eno Sarris: Bissel Brothers!

1:32
2-D: “Part of a rib was removed in surgery, some neck muscles that wrapped the problem nerve were scrapped off and his pectoral muscle was thinned in one area” from Chris Young’s Thoracic outlet surgery.

1:32
Eno Sarris: OH GOD PLEASE STOP

1:32
Johnny5Alive: eickhoff, amiright?

1:33
Eno Sarris: Buy buy buy. Exit velo down, more sliders.

1:33
A. Reitz: You say Osuna has 3 pitches…will he ever go back to SP? or injuries keep him in pen?

1:33
Eno Sarris: That bed is made, he’s a closer, and he chose it, because there was talk about making him a starter.

1:33
Ralph: How do I get my 3yo out of my bed?

1:33
Eno Sarris: Pancakes?

1:33
Jon: Play any board games? Beer, baseball, board games are my favorite hobbies.

1:34
Eno Sarris: When I can! I like the German games.

1:34
jose: i love baseball and I am going tomy first ever game today at Dodgers stadium, any tips?

1:35
Eno Sarris: If you like beer, stop/park near Sunset Beer company, walk to the Shortstop, walk into the park. You avoid that stupid parking lot, get great beer, can eat better than you would in the park. If you too young or don’t like beer… enjoy yourself! It’s a great looking park actually, nostalgic in a good sense.

1:35
jan: is Kentucky bourbon barrel worth standing in line for at a tasting

1:35
Eno Sarris: I don’t think so myself.

1:35
BernabeWilliamsFigueroaJr: Looking to trade M Fulmer or Velazquez, which might bring back the best return? Which will I regret losing least?

1:36
Eno Sarris: Fulmer gets more back but VV hurts less.

1:36
Polly: You starting Glasnow today?

1:36
Eno Sarris: No.

1:36
forever it: Call Monument Liquors and ask. They only sell 1 bottle per customer though so better bring friends if you want more than one.

1:37
Lave: Need saves! Puig too much to give up to land an Osuna?

1:37
Eno Sarris: I think you can do that. I still have some hope for Puig, but this island is getting smaller, and Osuna is a strong young closer on a good team.

1:37
Johnny5Alive: time for drinking macrobrew lager – weddings – dont expect the bride and groom to pony up for $6 a pop craft brew

1:37
Eno Sarris: doesn’t cost that out of the keg, but sure, I don’t complain about the beer at a wedding.

1:38
CamdenWarehouse: Which do you prefer: playoffs or pennant races?

1:38
Eno Sarris: I don’t love September baseball because of the rules.

1:38
Nate: I talked with my friends last week (an Indians fan) about a possibility Cleveland could go after Wil Myers before the deadline since the Padres will be sellers. Does Cleveland have enough assets to make that possibility a reality?

1:39
Eno Sarris: Sure, but if you’re Preller, and you’re admitting to your boss that you can’t be competitive in the next three years, don’t you think that’s a bad thing to admit?

1:39
mookie best: I went to Crooked Stave in Denver last weekend. Everyone: if you’re in the area, you have to go. The sours blew my mind

1:39
Eno Sarris: yes they are so great.

1:39
Scuba Steve: Need Holds help. FA’s are Dull, Hochever, Shaw, Ottovino, Caminero, May or Osich. Who is best for 2nd half? Holla at your boy!!

1:40
Eno Sarris: Dull highest floor. Ottavino and Caminero higher ceilings.

1:40
Martin: I have this table bookmarked in my browser and sorted by K%-BB%. I take note of small changes each day and it helps me target by low options (I recently traded for Smyly). Anything wrong with this strategy and should I incorporate anything else? http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=all&qual=y&type=c,4,5,11,7,8,13,-1,36,37,40,43,44,48,51,-1,6,45,62,-1,59,122,124,217&season=2016&month=0&season1=2016&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=22,d

1:40
Eno Sarris: The only thing missing there is homers, which has become increasingly important as homers are going nuts.

1:41
Pie: Paul is unhelpful with Austin breweries. Have you been to any/have any recommendations?

1:42
Eno Sarris: Jester King is the must, but Live Oak is good. Austin Beerworks too.

1:42
Wardo: re: Trillium – taproom in the new brewery in Canton now, 20oz/pp limit on pours on weekdays, but usually no limit on Sat.

1:42
Jeff in Allston: Best Brewery visits in NYC area (5 boroughs)?

1:42
Eno Sarris: Threes, Singlecut, Transmitter.

1:43
Erik: How much are organizations prevented from making optimal moves for fear of bad press or pissing off the fans?

1:43
Eno Sarris: I was talking to Adam Ottavino about what the Rockies would do — everyone pitches four innings, should they draft mostly pitchers — and at the end we shrugged and agreed that people want to keep their jobs, and if you do something crazy, and it doesn’t work, it’s your fault.

1:44
Scuba Steve: How many copies of your book have been sold? Where can I get one?

1:44
Eno Sarris: Dunno! Don’t want to know! www.beergraphs.com/book

1:44
Marty: we did a semi-destination wedding. Everyone CAN get there, it’s not overly expensive, but it’s a pain in the ass. Only the people who want to get there, get there.

1:44
Indy: Are you sure that by pitching with the wind, d’Arnaud didn’t just mean that Bartolo was gassy during his Wrigley start?

1:45
Leif Erikson: Eno, I know you watch Russo because your job is baseball but take an hour break from MLB Network each day and make it the hour he is on. He is awful.

1:45
Kerry: I’m very convinced beer palette burnout is a thing! I only drink IPA’s and rotate my five or so favorites regularly, and when I’m away from them for awhile they taste better when I come back. Thoughts?

1:45
Eno Sarris: yes, make sure to buy your old favorites and then return to your new favorites, it’s really fun.

1:45
WHOA: ENO – I know it’s 25 min away from Miami but Funky Buddha is a great brewery to check out – for the person who spoke of Miami area breweries

1:45
Eno Sarris: Boca!

1:45
Scuba Steve: Hunter Pence wears hunterpants

1:45
AJ: Are most of your player interviews done with players visiting AT&T or O.co? Or do you ever go on the road / how often?

1:46
Eno Sarris: Almost all in the bay area. I’ll go to the Futures game and usually work 1-2 games a year in San Diego, sometimes work a game or two in LA/ANA, have worked the Cell while on the road in Chicago.

1:46
jake: Does your book talk about beers inside the stadiums or just the surrounding areas?

1:46
Eno Sarris: Both.

1:47
Jeff in Allston: You’ve mentioned in the past how your general strategy is to sell your prospects for current major league pieces – can you talk us through your rationale on that? I’ve built up an epic farm system in my league, and am currently in 2nd. Need that extra boost in incentive to move all my minor leaguers

1:47
Eno Sarris: Well don’t move all of them! My wrinkle on that philosophy is to move all non top ten prospects because the bust rate soars after the top ten.

1:47
Travis: Albies currently has a 184 wRC+ in AA while he had an 89 wRC+ in AAA. Is AAA really that much more difficult?

1:47
Eno Sarris: Sample size stuff.

1:48
AF: SPs can account for 1/6 of your IP in innings-limited leagues. Batters only account for 1/9 to 1/12 of GP. Why aren’t SP more valuable than position players?

1:49
Eno Sarris: It’s more a question of risk — injury, yes, but also projection, because pitcher projections are worse than hitter ones — and then also of the ability to find good pitchers late.

1:49
CamdenWarehouse: Jose, bring a transistor and listen to Vin call the game as you watch.

1:49
Snowflake: Of course I put Snell on the bench and he pitches excellently.

1:49
Seth: we chose our wedding reception venue almost entirely because of the craft beer available! madtree in cincinnati, mmmm 🙂

1:49
Maxamuz:

1:50
Donald Trump: I ask questions. I have the best questions.

1:50
Eno Sarris: Man I gotta go.

1:50
Eno Sarris: You guys were great. I was average.

1:50
Eno Sarris: thanks for coming and sprucing the place up!
