Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 8/1/13
11:46 |
: Here at noon!
|
11:58 |
Forty-eight thousand seats bleats |
11:58 |
What’s an Oberholtzer? |
12:00 |
: “Head Wood” in German if we go literal, but that’s kinda gross. So let’s instead talk about his arsenal: three pitches, getting almost a K per inning in the minors, great control, not great velocity, homer and BABIP issues in the minors, pitching in the AL in a homer park. I’d leave him to the AL-onlies.
|
12:00 |
The Nationals are 11 games behind the Braves. The Marlins are 10 games behind the Nationals. |
12:00 |
: Never one to fluff my own feathers, I’ll just point out that I picked the Bravos to win the division this year.
|
12:00 |
Thoughts on Ellsbury the rest of the way? Is he going to turn on the power for some extra free agent bucks? |
12:01 |
: He can manage five more homers over the rest of the way. .300/10/50 is going to get him paid.
|
12:01 |
I have a serious crush on Miguel Sano….do you know if he is seeing anyone? |
12:01 |
|
12:01 |
: If you could ask Ernie Banks one question, what would it be.
|
12:01 |
Rangers have had 3 walkoffs in a row. I’m exhausted. |
12:02 |
: Pretty amazing.
|
12:02 |
Someone in my 10-team keeper league dropped Matt Cain. I need to find a tougher league, right? |
12:02 |
: Yeah, especially since when you get that small, it’s not a gaurantee that you need to pick up all dropped struggling stars.
|
12:02 |
Is my hanley/cespedes for his goldy or mccutchen good value for me? Especially if I have Xander waiting in the wings? |
12:03 |
: You get best player, so if it’s a shallow league, do it. The deeper the league gets, the more it stings to send two mid-rounders for a first rounder.
|
12:03 |
Eno Sarris chat: baseball, beer, and celebrity matchmaking. (does Sano count as a celebrity?) |
12:03 |
: Ooh that would be weird.
|
12:03 |
Gallardo worth a DL stash? |
12:04 |
: This is your question for Ernie Banks? Just kidding. Yeah, I’d stash anyone with upside in an open DL spot. DL spots should always be full.
|
12:04 |
3 weeks ago I traded Cliff Lee for Liriano and goldschmidt. No question. Just wanted to toot my own horn. |
12:04 |
: Well done.
|
12:04 |
Reason you have yet to be on the Getting Blanked Podcast this year: Drew Fairservice’s racism or his OVERT racism? |
12:04 |
: Just emailed him this question.
|
12:05 |
Are the Rangers squandering the talented Profar? I think if he wasn’t going to be an everyday player, he should have spent the year in AAA. Your thoughts? |
12:05 |
: I think he probably learned enough down there, and they are kind of following the Cardinal’s plan: nobody is too good for part time play. Break em in, get em used to the bigs, get use out of them, and when a vet gets too much money from someone else, slide him in. This is a revelation for me, I thought like you did for much of the year.
|
12:06 |
Mets game is on. Let’s get Metsmerized! no? When is Lucas Duda coming back and do we care that he can’t field a lick compared to Eric Young Jr (who can’t really hit a lick compared to Duda?) |
12:06 |
: If only you could smush them together! There’s a place for Duda on that field. Shoulda been right after a Byrd trade, though.
|
12:07 |
Can I cut ties with Erasmo? I want to believe but… |
12:07 |
: I’m holding. The problem so far has been control/command, and that’s not really his problem. Oh, and homers — he could have given up more homers if Endy Chavez hadn’t Endy Chavez/d.
|
12:08 |
Drop K-Rod for Bud Norris or some other useful SP? |
12:08 |
: Yes. Not into Bud Norris in Baltimore.
|
12:08 |
ROS Kennedy or Peavey? |
12:08 |
: Peavy, but Kennedy is ownable in all leagues.
|
12:09 |
How long does Grandy need to get it going assuming Friday activation? Does he hit 15 hrs ROS and slash 240/330/500? |
12:09 |
: I’ll take 10+ and the slash line looks okay. Gotta be some risk to his power given the injuries.
|
12:09 |
What tier SP should I target if I offer Rizzo in a keeper, Im desperate for pitching help. And is it even worth it for 9-10 starts? |
12:11 |
: That could be 60 innings. Do some math — if you get closer to a k per inning vs 7 per nine, you could gain a few Ks. Add them to your standings. Do you gain points? Also, Rizzo value diff in each league and it really just depends on the pitchers that the non-contenders have that you might want.
|
12:11 |
Eno, have you had 2 Roads Double IPA? It’s pretty amazing…and hoppy. |
12:11 |
: Where’s it from?
|
12:11 |
If the Red Sox play in the AL wild card game, their starting 3b is… |
12:11 |
: Middlebrooks. Although, I wouldn’t count out a Michael Young trade in August still.
|
12:12 |
My Yadi went down in a shallow 9team league. Best waiver options appear to be Martin and Castro. Their stats look eerily similar. What would you look at to determine who’s gonna be better for the next month I’ll need him? Who do you like? |
12:12 |
: I think I’d take Castro. I know Martin has the steals but eh.
|
12:12 |
Who would have more trade value for the Jays, Lawrie or Rasmus? |
12:12 |
: Lawrie more years of control, so more value imo.
|
12:13 |
O/U 2 saves ROS for Sergio Santos? |
12:13 |
: I read this as Romo at first hah. I think under. I like him, but Delabar and his immaculate inning have to have moved in front of him.
|
12:13 |
![]() Dude Lude? |

ENO-SARRIS! clapclap-clapclapclap ENO-SARRIS! clapclap-clapclapclap |
12:14 |
I can only hope it is a rap song feat. Jean Claude van Damme. |
12:14 |
I have “I love rock and roll” by Madonna stuck in my head. Kill me. Seriously, kill me. |
12:14 |
: Crazy interlude.
|
12:14 |
Is it safe to drop Albert now, or should we be stashing and crossing our fingers? |
12:14 |
: I dropped him where he was expensive in ottoneu and I was in contention. Keeping him in a place where I have room.
|
12:14 |
Frieri. Panic. Help. |
12:15 |
: The walks were a problem. And De La Rosa has velocity and better control and ground balls. But it is a little weird that he throws his 90 mph cutter more than his 95 mph four seamer. I’m not sure Frieri loses his job.
|
12:15 |
Giavotella/Getz for Oberholtzer, who says no |
12:15 |
: Everybody.
|
12:15 |
how good can XBOX (Xander Bogaerts) be in a few years? are we looking at a hanley-type hitter with half the hanley speed? how much higher is is value in fantasy if he stays at SS rather than moving to 3B? |
12:16 |
: The batting average is the only question, and it makes him much more valuable at SS in that case. less speed than hanley too, but interesting in the same way.
|
12:16 |
this penetration of Scullpin into the greater Northeast will most assuredly lead to my beer consumption quota going way up |
12:16 |
: Drink it for IPA day today.
|
12:16 |
Is Wainwright a good sell high candidate? The guy is 31, gotta be heading for regression right? |
12:17 |
: Fresh ligament, great pitcher.
|
12:17 |
Do you see any impact arms getting a call up in Aug/Sept? |
12:17 |
: Danny Salazar?
|
12:17 |
I’m rapidly approaching my 1450 innings limit, and need to dump of my pitchers. Who?! Scherzer, Harvey, Sale, Fernandez, Shark, Garza, Bumgarner |
12:18 |
: Fernandez won’t get you much and is probably a dropper soon when he hits IP limit. I’d shop Scherzer or Sale just because they more injury risk than Harvey, pitch in AL, and would have great trade value.
|
12:18 |
I have a Stone RuinTen in my fridge, but Im too scared to try it. Have you tried it? |
12:18 |
: I have no idea why I have not found this beer yet. Don’t be scared.
|
12:18 |
I love the ballpark reviews on Beergraphs- keep them coming! Real helpful when visiting a new park. |
12:18 |
: Hopefully we can get those into an app at some point.
|
12:18 |
Would Ian Kennedy be a better 5×5 bet now that he’s in SD than the following: Quintana, Wei-Yin Chen, Brandon Beachy? |
12:19 |
: I would take him over Quintana, who I think is risky in that park and won’t get you wins anyway. Or Chen.
|
12:19 |
Why is everybody mad at the Pirates for not overpaying for a mediocre outfielder in a weak trade market? |
12:19 |
: Cause some writer trashed them for it. I’m more mad that they didn’t get the Stanton deal done, that would have been crazy.
|
12:20 |
I may be a few minutes late Eno, I’m watching a video of a woman holding a baby who then proceeds to start a brawl at a Chuck E Cheese. |
12:20 |
Had my annual review today, no mention of my Fangraphs addiction so I guess I’m in the clear for another year… |
12:20 |
Robert Andino was the biggest-named infielder traded yesterday. |
12:20 |
: well done.
|
12:20 |
Trade Archie Bradley for Yelich in a dynasty? |
12:21 |
: I think I’d take the position player in the bigs over the minor league pitcher, yes.
|
12:21 |
Rosario or McCann ROS? |
12:22 |
: I like what McCann is doing. Always has more BA upside.
|
12:22 |
With the Rockies crumbling and Fowler having horrible home/road splits, what do you gather is a reasonable return in a dynasty league for him? He’s an extra piece once Grandy returns. |
12:22 |
: Trade him for a pitcher? These are hard for me, come with names off the rebuilding teams rosters, that’s easier for me and more constructive.
|
12:23 |
Cespedes has generally sucked this year. Given that we have only one prior season of MLB ball by which to judge him, is it possible that he is just a low avg home run guy but not a top 20 OF? |
12:23 |
: Low average home run guy with speed. Probably keeps him in the back end of the top 20. But yeah, last year’s swinging strike rate was probably prescient.
|
12:23 |
Are we allowed to second guess the Rays for waitng so long to bring up Myers? |
12:24 |
: Well, the Ks were something he had to work on. And now he’s K’ing less in the bigs than he did in the upper minors, which is strange. Also, wait for some BABIP regression before we know his true talent. Obviously good player for them, but the extra year of control is very important to that team.
|
12:24 |
Which trade do you think has been “best” this deadline? i.e. balanced for teams involved |
12:25 |
: The White Sox Boston Tigers trade ended up where everyone got a good piece, and since prognostications are all over the place, it might be the most even. I think the Tigers did best, because I don’t see all this power projection for Garcia, but it was a great trade.
|
12:25 |
Alt-J! Who would you rather keep (5×5, shallow keeper league) Beltre or Machado? |
12:26 |
: There you go. AND he likes triangles. Beltre is going to start missing some time, but I like him better next year, and that’s all that matters. Especially since you can probably get something nice for Machado from a rebuilder.
|
12:27 |
What do you expect next year from Sonny Gray? |
12:27 |
: Straily type use, with slightly better results? Then again, Beane could trade Anderson or Milone, that’s his MO.
|
12:27 |
Do you think Teheran reached his ceiling this year or can he continue to improve? |
12:28 |
: I think he’s a little over his head right now, but I could see him improving to ‘deserve’ his results a little more.
|
12:28 |
Do you think that hitters with strong platoon splits are undervalued. After seeing McClouth this year I’m wondering why more teams don’t look for cheaper players like him |
12:29 |
: In real life, for sure, although it can cause some issues late in games, and roster management issues. Those roster management issues are the reason they are iffy in shallow bench leagues. Instead of having some upside on your bench, you’re stuck using two players to man one position. That’s a downside in real life too.
|
12:29 |
Thoughts on Porcello, Kluber, and Quintana? What’s their true talent? |
12:29 |
: I’ll take Kluber. I like what Porcello told me about his curve ball, and it could iron out his split problem, but the fact that it’s gone in and out makes me a bit nervous.
|
12:30 |
Who plays SS for the Cardinals opening day 2014? Is Wong an absolute no? |
12:30 |
: I don’t think they care too much about getting offense from their shortstop. Probably just one of their in-house guys again.
|
12:30 |
what’s your favorite midwestern beer? StL/KC area mainly |
12:31 |
: Boulevard has really been impressing me. Their Love Child is a great mild sour. Their Saison Bretta is awesome. Good stuff all around.
|
12:31 |
Which owner of a “Top 12” catcher is most frustrated and would be most likely to accept Joe Mauer in a trade? |
12:31 |
: Sal perez?
|
12:31 |
for BDHudson, replace your version of I Love Rock N Roll with this one, you should be much happier http://youtu.be/veb_3IWtiJM |
12:31 |
Any value out of THE BEARD ROS? |
12:31 |
: Na
|
12:31 |
I think ‘who says no?’ is a stupid phrase. |
12:32 |
: Who hangs up is worse. Because the person who heard no probably the first to hang up.
|
12:32 |
What do I do w/Gregg, now? My roster’s jammed; I do own Strop. |
12:32 |
: You can drop Strop, but I do think Gregg is an August trade candidate.
|
12:32 |
What ever happened to Grady Sizemore…? |
12:32 |
: He broke.
|
12:32 |
Thoughts on an Aramis return to a huge 2nd half per the last 4 years? |
12:33 |
: The older you get, the less likely your body cooperates.
|
12:33 |
Big Eye > Sculpin. Just saying |
12:33 |
: There are people who agree. I’m not one.
|
12:33 |
Hey Eno. Can I start CC tomorrow at San Diego? I am a Yankee fan and love CC but I am in a tight era/whip race…Thanks. |
12:33 |
: yes.
|
12:33 |
: One thing though: day games in SD are significantly different than night games. I’m assuming night game.
|
12:33 |
Beachy or Cashner ROS? |
12:33 |
: Cash. Too many “ifs” with Beachy that Cash has overcome.
|
12:34 |
Spring House Robot Surf Factory Pineapple Pale Ale. Was skeptical, but really enjoyed it. Worth a shot if you can get it. |
12:34 |
: Weird. I have a pineapple saison on the way to my house.
|
12:34 |
Cashner’s slider velocity has been slowly increasing. Do you think he can build strength this year and get some of that power back next year? Or am I just too in love with Andrew Cashner? That seems possible. |
12:34 |
: That’s interesting! I’ll take a look. I thought maybe he’d just let that pitch go to save his arm.
|
12:35 |
How much am I hurting my team in a 12 team 6×6 roto league (no keepers) by rostering Michael Pineda and George Springer. I’m in the middle of the pack and while i do not want to waste a roster place – our waiver wire is ravenous. |
12:36 |
: I’d drop Springer. A 30% strikeout rate in the minors does not scream “he’s going to debut on fire” while Pineda is at least King everyone in minors.
|
12:36 |
Wait. Is today really IPA day? |
12:36 |
: Yup. Just another reason to
|
12:36 |
RuinTen = beergasm |
12:36 |
: thanks for finishing my sentence.
|
12:36 |
Who gets most SAVES for the Ms ROS? |
12:37 |
: Wilhelmsen. Farquhar is next in line though.
|
12:37 |
Are you buying Henderson Alvarez’ increased GB rate and a better fielding Miami infield ROS |
12:37 |
: Alvarez is so interesting. 96 with fastball, just doesn’t have enough bendy stuff. No Ks at all. He should try a knuckle curve or a split finger. Would change his life.
|
12:37 |
: But yeah, right now, he’s a back end deeper league play based on better infield D, NL, GBs.
|
12:38 |
ENO! I missed the first 20 minutes, favorite triangle? |
12:38 |
: Someone pointed out the triangle between short, third and LF. That’s a fun one for ducksnorts.
|
12:38 |
Who has lost more luster this year, Taveras or Profar? And I’m not saying its a massive amount, just wondering. |
12:39 |
: Might be Taveras. At least Profar is up and looks to be pushing for a role. Taveras got hurt, and now they talking Adams at first base next year, Craig in OF and Taveras hoping they get tired of Jay.
|
12:39 |
If you had to trade one of Liriano or Gio which one and why? |
12:39 |
: Liriano, just cause of career track record. Just have to think the walks will be a problem again, even as much as I like him.
|
12:39 |
Any news on Grilli cheese? |
12:39 |
: HE HAS VOWED TO RETURN.
|
12:39 |
Is anyone writing an article regressing pitching skills and dating kate upton? |
12:40 |
: Small sample size.
|
12:40 |
Suspensions coming yet today do you think? |
12:40 |
: Tired of it.
|
12:40 |
: Already. And hasn’t happened.
|
12:40 |
Project Marisnick ROS please… |
12:40 |
: .260 with 15/15 type pace.
|
12:40 |
Eno, you’re in SF right? LET’S BEER. |
12:41 |
: I might tonight, but I will certainly beer at the Mikkeller grand opening next Thursday. Writing up my review of their soft opening, plus an interview with the owner, and exclusive preview of their rare beers at opening night, for BeerGraphs, pubbing tomorrow.
|
12:41 |
But what is Erasmo’s ERA against lefties?! |
12:41 |
If a little person came into the store it would be all we could talk about for year. |
12:41 |
Wait a baby started a brawl at Chuck E. Cheese? That’s the best promotional ad they’ve had in forever! |
12:41 |
Wil Myers is amazing. Isn’t Wil Myers amazing? |
12:41 |
: Love that he’s stealing bases actually. And the K rate is surprising.
|
12:42 |
Castro or Lucroy ROS? |
12:42 |
: lucroy by a nose
|
12:43 |
Do you like Alex Wood for the rest of the season? |
12:43 |
: I don’t think he has the innings to last the whole season. Hasn’t built them up yet.
|
12:43 |
Does GIO get suspended? |
12:43 |
: So far the rumors have been right, no? And the rumor was that he got legal supplements from them.
|
12:43 |
Rebuilding for next year, was offered Pujols and Yaider for my Rosario and Verlander. Keep 5, I’ll be keeping McCutchen, Goldy, Beltre definitely. Maybe keep Pujols/Yadier, also have Kemp to consider. Thoughts on selling on Verlander for 2 injured players? Normally wouldn’t, but the rebuild makes it more doable. |
12:44 |
: Nah. Pujols redundant in your keeper list, and Yadier is okay as fifth keeper, but Pujolls not useful. Be more likely to say yes with Yadier and jose Fernandez or the like. Shelby Miller.
|
12:44 |
![]() Rockos Modern Life – a kids tv show in the 90s. He works for a sex phone line. |
12:44 |
Is Chris Archer the Rays second best pitcher now? Been pretty good and he throws hard. Seems like he’s a future ace. |
12:45 |
: Wonder about the changeup a bit still.
|
12:45 |
How do I eat a burger without ending up with no more bun to eat the last 1/4 of the burger? |
12:45 |
: Eat around the burger.
|
12:45 |
Keeper league – would you trade Latos, Heyward, Aaron Hill for Stanton? All appx the same price to keep next year. |
12:46 |
: I would if I was rebuilding, but if I was competitive, I’d probably need an SP and 2B.
|
12:46 |
Will the trading of Justin Maxwell clear enough room for a George Springer call up? |
12:46 |
: Or for Grossman to play more. Could be Springer, yes.
|
12:46 |
Would you rather have Rubby or Greg Holland in a dynasty for now and future |
12:46 |
: Great question, and again I fall back on current status. Rather have Holland if I’m going for it. Rather have Rubby if not competing.
|
12:46 |
Norris v. LHB and in Camden = Danger Zone, yes? |
12:46 |
: Very much so.
|
12:46 |
Lucas Duda News – Lucas “The Main Event” Duda (intercostal) went 0-for-2 with a walk Wednesday in his first rehab game with the GCL Mets. Duda also played five innings in left field. He figures to play a few more games in the minors, but should be back with the Mets by the end of the month. |
12:47 |
Fill in the blank: Neal Huntington is among the top __ GMs in mlb. |
12:47 |
: Ten. Maybe five. I really like how he’s kept a toe in the water every trade deadline but made sure the team still had its core.
|
12:47 |
How do you pronounce McClouth? McClooth or McKlowth? |
12:47 |
: McKlowth, but of course that means it’s McClooth.
|
12:47 |
after this year, where do you see Braun getting drafted next in redraft leagues, and will it be too high or too low |
12:48 |
: Anything beyond third round is too low. I think a conservative estimate of non-juice Braun is still .280+/25/10 or so.
|
12:48 |
Who should I keep out of: Corbin, Beachy, Sonny Gray, Salazar, Biddle, Fister, Syndergaard, Cosart, Heaney… Definitely keeping Matt Harvey, Scherzer. I’d like to keep maybe 5 or 6 total pitchers. |
12:49 |
: Corbin, Fister, Harvey Scherzer. Tha’ts four. Salazar might be tasty enough to keep even without much more info. Then you wait to see more info on Beachy vs Biddle vs Syndergaard.
|
12:49 |
When do you think Xander is called up? That they are still giving him starts at SS (last night) is troubling to me. I need him now. |
12:49 |
: September.
|
12:49 |
Drop Brandon Belt and pick up Brett Pill? |
12:50 |
: No. Pill is 29. I don’t think this is really a change at the position.
|
12:50 |
Gotta try Urban chestnut in Stl |
12:50 |
Corbin or Pineda for 2014? |
12:50 |
: corbin. Pineda still doesn’t have third pitch, right?
|
12:50 |
10 team, keep 15 with only 3 bench spots. I love the guy, but should I be dropping Salvador Perez? In a position to win this year and have Russell Martin with Salvy on the bench, but could really use that spot to stream pitchers. |
12:51 |
: Sure. He’s batting average only, which is problematic at catcher. They have a .285 BABIP as a group, and he hurt his knee and is striking out more.
|
12:51 |
are you believing in Justin Masterson yet? |
12:51 |
: Definitely not for next year.
|
12:51 |
I’ve got a bit of a roster crunch in a dynasty. Would you drop Neil Walker, Melky, or EY Jr? |
12:51 |
: Melky.
|
12:51 |
Chatwood ROS? Will he provide mixed league value? |
12:52 |
: I’m not buying. I mean the grounders are nice and all. Not in mixed leagues.
|
12:52 |
How are you tweeting while chatting? |
12:52 |
: Magic.
|
12:52 |
Are you going to be at the Boston meetup? |
12:52 |
: First one I’ll miss.
|
12:52 |
If Ervin Santana was traded, would he have commanded a bigger return than Peavy? |
12:52 |
: No.
|
12:52 |
You should ask Hunter Pence about diet. He is one of the only athletes (in the major N. A. sports) who subscribes to the “Paleo Diet”. |
12:52 |
: Is true. I might have to work around baseball topics and surprise him with questions anyway, so starting with diet might be fun.
|
12:53 |
Is AROD history’s greatest monster? |
12:53 |
: LOL. I’m actually kind of rooting for a successful suit, because there’s something about this Biogenesis stuff that feels draconian.
|
12:53 |
Huston Street is back to being Huston Street now, right? His last month has been fabulous (k’s returning, no runs, etc.). |
12:54 |
: Actually the velocity is up a tick and the swinging strikes are coming back. Is true. I picked him up a couple times on trade deadline day.
|
12:54 |
Eno- how you doing? Actually got a non-fantasy question today, hope that is OK! Is there any evidence that batters hit less well when there is a guy on 1st trying to steal? Would think it could be a bit of a distraction… |
12:54 |
: Haven’t seen this tested.
|
12:54 |
They have Goose Island at Fenway now! |
12:55 |
: GI signed with InBev I think. And of their widely available beers, only Matilda moves the needle much with me, although 312 is probably better than any big beer at a normal park, so congrats!
|
12:55 |
Sale for CC and Yelich a fair trade in a keeper league? |
12:56 |
: It’s okay. Mostly because there’s a lot of risk in that recoil in Sale’s delivery. But if it’s dynasty, Sale stresses his below, not his shoulder iMO, and that’s just a year off, which may not be such a huge deal.
|
12:56 |
Should I drop Headley and let Prado play 3B for my team the rest of the year? Would stash Bogaerts with dropping Headley as well. Could keep Boga for 3 years. I need this! |
12:57 |
: I’d drop someone, but I like Headley. Nobody else? Prado better at MI spot.
|
12:57 |
What do you think about Beachy next year? Will he be able to return to what he once was? |
12:57 |
: 2011 may not happen again but 2012 yes.
|
12:57 |
Chance Alex Wood sticks in the rotation next year? Sexy K rate but ive read he could be headed for the bullpen |
12:58 |
: They’ll give him a chance. And I think the bullpen risk is mostly because his delivery is so crazy people assume he’ll be hurt. See: Sale, Chris.
|
12:58 |
Eno / Eno’s Entourage: You all were very helpful with providing beer recs on my NYC trip. Start preparing some suggestions for San Francisco, I’m headed there next. |
12:58 |
: I can do that myself since I’m out here.
|
12:58 |
If you’re not sick of getting beer recommendations, Czech Mate Pilsner from Red Lodge Ales is my favorite from my area (Billings, MT). |
12:58 |
This lifetime ban thing for A-Rod. Would it be like a Pete Rose ban, or “just” an infinity game suspension? |
12:59 |
: Infinity game probably, but: might work just the same. Will they vote him into HoF if that’s how his career ends?
|
12:59 |
What rumored trade would you have mostl iked to have seen done? |
12:59 |
: I don’t know exactly what it was, but I heard something like Taillon/Polanco/Plus for Stanton was in the works.
|
12:59 |
what is the most refreshing and thirst quenching beer? |
12:59 |
: For me it’s Double Jack.
|
1:00 |
Will Adam Eaton be the starting CF next season for the D’Backs? |
1:00 |
: I think so.
|
1:01 |
Eno, im in a bind here and I need your help. 16 team dynasty league. choose three to keep from Teheran/Wacha/Bauer/Sonny Gray/Alex Wood |
1:01 |
: Teheran, Wacha… gather info. Watch Gray and Wood in their limited play.
|
1:01 |
I’m trending to be +150 IP in my Roto league, should I try to trade Corbin? |
1:01 |
: Yes
|
1:01 |
How bad would you feel if you dropped Rizzo? I have Freeman at 1st and HanRam at UTIL…got nowhere to play him! |
1:02 |
: I’d keep him. Has more power upside than Freeman.
|
1:02 |
: Maybe you should trade your SS.
|
1:02 |
Hate to beat the dead horse but considering how hard the rangers were looking for a bat Cruz will prolly settle for a suspension this seas? |
1:02 |
: That’s what the rumor is.
|
1:02 |
Selling high on Nick Franklin in my keeper league before he goes Ackley is a good idea, right? |
1:03 |
: I don’t think that’s where Franklin is headed.
|
1:03 |
Is Garza and Danks a fair offer for Gio in a 20tm dynasty? |
1:03 |
: Yes
|
1:03 |
Dear Dr. Eno, I’m having mixed feelings about my relationship with AJ Griffin — what with the hair, the glasses, the 1.11 WHIP, sub 2 BB/9, and my affection for his uncle Charlie (http://cdn.fangraphs.com/not/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Griffin-CU.gif). Can I forgive him for hurting me with the long ball? |
1:03 |
: Yes, especially since you know you can start him 60-75% of the time without worrying.
|
1:04 |
That burger comment may be the best insight to ever come out of one of these chats #mindblown |
1:04 |
: It makes for a mess, but you get burger with every bun bite.
|
1:04 |
Nick Franklin or Anthony Rendon ROS? |
1:04 |
: Franklin
|
1:04 |
wait there are people who complain about having too much burger? Too much bun is a significantly worse and more pressing issue. |
1:04 |
: Actually eating around it works for both issues. Because you push the burger into the remaining bun with your bites.
|
1:05 |
Could the O’s platoon Norris and a LHP in a spot? |
1:05 |
: Matusz.

JOAN JETT sang “I Love Rock n’ Roll” not Madonna! Great googily-moogily, people have no idea about 80s music, never mind one of the most played songs from that era. I HATE PEOPLE. |
1:05 |
: Hold on. I think it’s even older and Jett was covering it too.
|
1:06 |
who makes big eye? |
1:06 |
: Ballast Point, top top brewery.
|
1:06 |
Yapple dapple Appel. What level do you see him starting at next year and how many games do you put the o/u at for MLB starts? |
1:06 |
: Doesn’t rhyme that way actually. Double A, makes bigs late in season. five plus starts.
|
1:06 |
Third round? Wow. If a 2014 redraft was being done now, I’d take him 3rd behind Trout and Miggy. |
1:07 |
: Everyone is going to subtract numbers because of juice and look at last year’s numbers. Even just on numbers, the fact that he’s running less pushes him down into the turn for me, at least. By the third round I wouldn’t hesitate.
|
1:08 |
What are your thoughts on Sandoval RoS- is there an argument he’s better than Rizzo at 1B/3B given the lineup he hits in? Without Soriano, the Cubs ex-Rizzo are Miamiesque… |
1:08 |
: Yeah I guess you could go with Pablo over him. But Pablo is a shutdown risk because of injury.
|
1:08 |
Rank as Keeper options – Jose Fernandez $11, Corbin $1, Pineda $1, Archer $1 |
1:08 |
: Even with the higher price, i have it as you write it, with Archer ahead of Pineda.
|
1:09 |
Favorite name in baseball? |
1:09 |
: Leudy Molina cause ludes
|
1:09 |
Ryan Raburn just hit a HR in the Indians/Chicago game. He’s been worth 2.0 WAR in 61 games without a massively inflated BABIP. Is it safe to say he is back to beign a useful player? |
1:09 |
: vs lefties
|
1:10 |
Oswaldo Arcia or Josh Reddick? Keeper league, playing for next year. |
1:10 |
: Arcia actually! I think he could be pretty good, and looking at his MiLB numbers, looks better than Avisail Garica.
|
1:10 |
Who’s most likely to clear waivers and have a big ROS impact? |
1:10 |
: Michael young
|
1:10 |
Georgia beers seem to be (understandably) absent from the relevant pages of the BeerGraphs leaderboard. What is your favorite GA beer? |
1:10 |
: Sweetwater IPA or one of Terrapin’s
|
1:11 |
![]() I knew you had a doppelganger! He writes well too! |
1:11 |
What can we expect from a returning Alex Cobb? |
1:11 |
: excellence
|
1:11 |
Still worth holding on to Gregerson or are there better save specs out there |
1:11 |
: Strop, Farquhar probably better.
|
1:11 |
I have to write two preview articles about two bands for an art music festival but I really don’t want to. And it’s volunteer work. How do I motivate myself to do this? |
1:11 |
: Run around your apartment in circles. Then think of the beer you’ll have later.
|
1:12 |
Follow up, I alreFollow up, I already have Jose Fernandez, would you keep him w/ Goldy, McCutchen, Beltre, and Kemp? Or look to improve? I have no idea what to expect from Kemp next yearady have Jose Fernandez, would you keep him w/ Goldy, McCutchen, Beltre, and Kemp? Or look to improve? I have no idea what to expect from Kemp next year |
1:12 |
: I think Goldy, McCutch, Beltre, Kemp and one of Fernandez and Verlander is fine. Maybe you can trade Pujols for a pick.
|
1:12 |
Who lost (won?) the Pineda-Montero trade? |
1:12 |
: Might still be the Yankees. Surprising to me.
|
1:13 |
far as i’m concerned, the worst part of the whole biogenesis thing is the fact that Selig has learned that he can basically suspend people for however long he wants as long as he threatens a longer suspension first and then “settles”. the MLBPA will even take his side! |
1:13 |
: Do not like this bit.
|
1:13 |
I am wondering what tier Brad Miller will rank among shortstops next year? He is still on the wire in my keeper league but I only have one waiver move remaining. |
1:13 |
: Probably not in the top 12.
|
1:13 |
Losing Everth to Biogenesis. What are your thoughts on Villar? |
1:14 |
: So many Ks, but if you want steals and you in a deep league…
|
1:14 |
Wouldn’t you have a bigger hole to hit it through with a guy trying to steal? Especially if he actually runs, that puts two guys out of position. Unless you hit it right at a bag. |
1:14 |
Isn’t the theory the opposite: Pitchers have to worry about the guy on 1st stealing so the batter is slightly better? |
1:14 |
: My bet is no effect because of all these effects cancelling out.
|
1:14 |
Sale’s velo is up this year and the Sox have a terrific medical staff. Feels like people are greatly overstating the risk he breaks down. |
1:14 |
: Yeah but then you watch him pitch.
|
1:14 |
Do you think MLB is trying to give The Yankees a way out of the hideous A-Rod contract by throwing down the lifetime ban? |
1:15 |
: I don’t think this has much to do with the Yankees.
|
1:15 |
Am I in the entourage? |
1:15 |
: We’ll have to see. Are you the lovable, bigger driver, or the cutthroat business guy? Or the dude on the couch.
|
1:15 |
Most refreshing: Shiner Ruby Redbird |
1:16 |
: It’s like 3% alcohol and has grapefruit in it. I’ll either really like it or abhor it.
|
1:16 |
Clemens was in Boston recently and stopped by Red Sox booth and told a story of when he pitched his 1st 20K game. It was a good story. He was late to park, jumped out of car, cop came up, said , arnet you..? Yes…took him to park. Threw 30 warmups, all balls. Hit first batter in the head, then went on to strike out 20 people. |
1:16 |
Chris Johnson, overachieving or underrated? |
1:17 |
: You know what’s weird. He has legit oppo power. That’s the recipe for high BABIPs. .340+ career BABIP. So maybe he can do that, which will pump his BA up, and he has some homer power… it’s just that in real life, he doesn’t walk, defense suspect, strikes out a bit much. Really interesting player that I poo-pooed too much, maybe.
|
1:17 |
Heyward or Austin Jackson in 2014? |
1:17 |
: Hey. Ward.
|
1:18 |
I think someone in my league doesn’t know Everth will be suspended and just sent me a deal – Gio/Everth (mine) for (his) Rios/D. Murphy. |
1:18 |
: Could be betting against it. Don’t feel bad about taking it. I felt bad about taking Ichiro/Blanton for Colon in a dynasty because I was sure, after Braun thing, that they were all screwed. Now it looks like Colon won’t get got a second time and I feel stupid.
|
1:19 |
: Incidentally, I hate PEDs more for the suspensions and what they do to my fantasy baseball teams then what they do in real life, because I have no idea what they do in real life.
|
1:19 |
Just got back from Hawaii where I drank tons of Big Wave Golden Ale – delicious – ever try? |
1:19 |
: yes but my favorite beers in hawaii were all from new zealand. (hipster/d?)
|
1:20 |
as someone who owns Stanton in a dynasty, would much prefer he be traded to Boston or Texas than Pitt because of the park |
1:20 |
: Oh for sure, I’m with you on that count. But in real life, would have been exciting.

1:20 |
You think Donaldson is worth trading for in a dynasty league? |
1:21 |
: I just did. I really think he’s settling into this new walk rate and the power is real.
|
1:21 |
Holding Melancon and Ziegler in a blood – for – saves league. Deal them to the vultures or hold and try to add one more closer to the mix? |
1:21 |
: Deal Ziegler. Unsure Grilli will make it back until very end.
|
1:22 |
What types of things typically cause unusually low LOB% for pitchers? I guess trouble pitching out of the stretch is the obvious one but I’m looking for more statistical stuff. |
1:22 |
: SIERA found a link between high K% and high LOB% so the converse is probably true.
|
1:22 |
Would you rather watch a baseball game in Cuba, Japan, or the Netherlands? |
1:22 |

1:23 |

1:24 |
Bear Republic’s stuff worth trying? |
1:24 |
: Very much so. Racer 5 is easy drinking. Black Racer is good. Racer X is really good. Cask racer 5 is legendary.
|
1:24 |
Rank the following: Yelich, Urrutia and Marisnick for keeper/dynasty. |
1:24 |
: yelich, marisnick, urrutia. urrutia might have a decent BA, but the power is undetermined.
|
1:24 |
I rostered Jose Cisnero — am I nuts? |
1:25 |

1:25 |
: yes
|
1:25 |
I really wish ESPN would add Gregory Polanco to the pool before my league realizes it. What to expect of him? |
1:25 |
: If he could take RF, I like him. K% not too high, has real speed.
|
1:26 |
My friend and I were having a debate…who is the better pure hitter- Miggy or Joey Votto? I chose Votto but I think a lot of people would disagree with me. Votto is the guy I’d want up with the bases loaded and two outs down by 1 in the ninth |
1:26 |
: Actually might rather have Miggy there because he’s more likely to end the game with a hit. Votto I want over the course of a season because his approach makes me feel tingly inside.

1:27 |

So I tweeted this yesterday but Mets radio broadcast went on a tangent of how WAR, spreadsheets and Big Bang Theory relate vs. old school stopwatch fogies who stick their head in the sand against anything mathmatical. Thought it was funny to hear them say that WAR is trustworthy due to supernerds crunching those numbers for us. |
1:28 |
: I saw that they talked about it, but didn’t hear the results. That’s Lewin, right? I think he’s saber-friendly.
|
1:28 |
Is Jonathan Villar the new old Everth Cabrera? |
1:28 |
: Yeah but with a worse K% even.
|
1:28 |

Why do you say Leonys Martin is only 2/3rds the player he could be? What does he need to change? |
1:31 |
: Play vs lefties.
|
1:31 |
Trade Cashner for Gardner. Fair? |
1:31 |
: Yup
|
1:31 |
Moore has arm problems and Fernandez is gonna get shut down. My segura for his Masterson for playoff push? (I have tulo as well) |
1:31 |
: Do better than Masterson. Even if their current numbers are no good. I’d take Verlander, Cain, Hamels, all the buy lows over Masterson.
|
1:31 |
I wish people would hop off this Marcus Semien bandwagon. Want to draft him this year in our prospect draft cuz we played little league together. |
1:31 |
Eno don’t stop |
1:32 |
I am more likely to get a hit. Period. |
1:32 |
Is Grant Green worth owning in a points league if he’s not playing 2B? |
1:32 |
: No
|
1:32 |
Lewin was more knowledgeable while Howie said he’d take it on faith that WAR is not an absolute value, but a very good barometer on player performance. |
1:32 |
All the discussion started because of Sandy’s quote that Mets outfield was one of the best in the business the past month |
1:32 |
: Yeah but no
|
1:32 |
Couldn’t MLB allow injured players to use some PEDs through a monitored program? There is a legit medical reason, it helps get the best “product” on the field, and shouldn’t affect on field performance. |
1:33 |
: I actually think more steroids will be made legal. Cortisol is a steroid. Of course, it’s not anabolic, and that’s where the line is drawn. But I bet that line gets fuzzy soon.

I’m toasting frozen waffles. This is what happens when you don’t post my comments, Eno. I’m forced to eat frozen waffles. I hope you’re happy…Bastard. |
1:34 |
: But now I did. How do you feel now and will it effect your dietary choices.
|
1:34 |
Why is Scott Diamond so bad this year? Last year a mirage? |
1:34 |
: Yes.
|
1:34 |
in Otto, im short innings (and Ks and wins) but have $$. is it advisable to stream? |
1:35 |
: No, really hard to do so with those rules. But it is advisable to buy some arms for hitter spots and use them in good starts.

Fuzzy math, fuzzy steroids. |

1:36 |
Huh…. Maybe it was something else of the Belgian persuasion |
1:36 |
: yeah I don’t love dubbels and trippels. A bit much for me.
|
1:36 |
Sorry back to the older Fowler question, I want to win this year: Weaver too high? AJ Burnett and Beachy too low? |
1:37 |
: Weaver decent because he’s right on the line between 87 and 88, and 87 means more homers. But of course Beachy is the first try.
|
1:37 |
Any concern about James Shields k rates this year? |
1:37 |
: Some concern about him in dynasty leagues from K% and some slight injury predictors from time to time. (See Zimm’s article on subject)

Archer v. Shark ROS? |
With a phone full of pictures of pitchers' fingers, strange beers, and his two toddler sons, Eno Sarris can be found at the ballpark or a brewery most days. Read him here, writing about the A's or Giants at The Athletic, or about beer at October. Follow him on Twitter @enosarris if you can handle the sandwiches and inanity.
I would do it. Risk on both sides of the coin but more upside with the return.
