Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 8/1/13

11:46
Eno Sarris: Here at noon!

11:58
Eno Sarris: Lyrics of the day, cause it’s a bloodsport, this baseball thing:

Forty-eight thousand seats bleats
And roars for my memories of you
Now that I’m fully clean
The matador is no more and is dragged from view

11:58
Comment From person hscer
What’s an Oberholtzer?

12:00
Eno Sarris: “Head Wood” in German if we go literal, but that’s kinda gross. So let’s instead talk about his arsenal: three pitches, getting almost a K per inning in the minors, great control, not great velocity, homer and BABIP issues in the minors, pitching in the AL in a homer park. I’d leave him to the AL-onlies.

12:00
Comment From person hscer
The Nationals are 11 games behind the Braves. The Marlins are 10 games behind the Nationals.

12:00
Eno Sarris: Never one to fluff my own feathers, I’ll just point out that I picked the Bravos to win the division this year.

12:00
Comment From Miketron
Thoughts on Ellsbury the rest of the way? Is he going to turn on the power for some extra free agent bucks?

12:01
Eno Sarris: He can manage five more homers over the rest of the way. .300/10/50 is going to get him paid.

12:01
Comment From SanoandMe4Eva
I have a serious crush on Miguel Sano….do you know if he is seeing anyone?

12:01
Eno Sarris: THE BASEBALL. /roastd

12:01
Eno Sarris: If you could ask Ernie Banks one question, what would it be.

12:01
Comment From bdhudson
Rangers have had 3 walkoffs in a row. I’m exhausted.

12:02
Eno Sarris: Pretty amazing.

12:02
Comment From Razor
Someone in my 10-team keeper league dropped Matt Cain. I need to find a tougher league, right?

12:02
Eno Sarris: Yeah, especially since when you get that small, it’s not a gaurantee that you need to pick up all dropped struggling stars.

12:02
Comment From Steve
Is my hanley/cespedes for his goldy or mccutchen good value for me? Especially if I have Xander waiting in the wings?

12:03
Eno Sarris: You get best player, so if it’s a shallow league, do it. The deeper the league gets, the more it stings to send two mid-rounders for a first rounder.

12:03
Comment From juan pierres mustache
Eno Sarris chat: baseball, beer, and celebrity matchmaking. (does Sano count as a celebrity?)

12:03
Eno Sarris: Ooh that would be weird.

12:03
Comment From Jim
Gallardo worth a DL stash?

12:04
Eno Sarris: This is your question for Ernie Banks? Just kidding. Yeah, I’d stash anyone with upside in an open DL spot. DL spots should always be full.

12:04
Comment From Marty
3 weeks ago I traded Cliff Lee for Liriano and goldschmidt. No question. Just wanted to toot my own horn.

12:04
Eno Sarris: Well done.

12:04
Comment From Mark
Reason you have yet to be on the Getting Blanked Podcast this year: Drew Fairservice’s racism or his OVERT racism?

12:04
Eno Sarris: Just emailed him this question.

12:05
Comment From Mable
Are the Rangers squandering the talented Profar? I think if he wasn’t going to be an everyday player, he should have spent the year in AAA. Your thoughts?

12:05
Eno Sarris: I think he probably learned enough down there, and they are kind of following the Cardinal’s plan: nobody is too good for part time play. Break em in, get em used to the bigs, get use out of them, and when a vet gets too much money from someone else, slide him in. This is a revelation for me, I thought like you did for much of the year.

12:06
Comment From Ceetar
Mets game is on. Let’s get Metsmerized! no? When is Lucas Duda coming back and do we care that he can’t field a lick compared to Eric Young Jr (who can’t really hit a lick compared to Duda?)

12:06
Eno Sarris: If only you could smush them together! There’s a place for Duda on that field. Shoulda been right after a Byrd trade, though.

12:07
Comment From JT
Can I cut ties with Erasmo? I want to believe but…

12:07
Eno Sarris: I’m holding. The problem so far has been control/command, and that’s not really his problem. Oh, and homers — he could have given up more homers if Endy Chavez hadn’t Endy Chavez/d.

12:08
Comment From JT
Drop K-Rod for Bud Norris or some other useful SP?

12:08
Eno Sarris: Yes. Not into Bud Norris in Baltimore.

12:08
Comment From Beano
ROS Kennedy or Peavey?

12:08
Eno Sarris: Peavy, but Kennedy is ownable in all leagues.

12:09
Comment From Dr. Met
How long does Grandy need to get it going assuming Friday activation? Does he hit 15 hrs ROS and slash 240/330/500?

12:09
Eno Sarris: I’ll take 10+ and the slash line looks okay. Gotta be some risk to his power given the injuries.

12:09
Comment From Bruce
What tier SP should I target if I offer Rizzo in a keeper, Im desperate for pitching help. And is it even worth it for 9-10 starts?

12:11
Eno Sarris: That could be 60 innings. Do some math — if you get closer to a k per inning vs 7 per nine, you could gain a few Ks. Add them to your standings. Do you gain points? Also, Rizzo value diff in each league and it really just depends on the pitchers that the non-contenders have that you might want.

12:11
Comment From Marty
Eno, have you had 2 Roads Double IPA? It’s pretty amazing…and hoppy.

12:11
Eno Sarris: Where’s it from?

12:11
Comment From Jim
If the Red Sox play in the AL wild card game, their starting 3b is…

12:11
Eno Sarris: Middlebrooks. Although, I wouldn’t count out a Michael Young trade in August still.

12:12
Comment From Reddickulous
My Yadi went down in a shallow 9team league. Best waiver options appear to be Martin and Castro. Their stats look eerily similar. What would you look at to determine who’s gonna be better for the next month I’ll need him? Who do you like?

12:12
Eno Sarris: I think I’d take Castro. I know Martin has the steals but eh.

12:12
Comment From LarryA
Who would have more trade value for the Jays, Lawrie or Rasmus?

12:12
Eno Sarris: Lawrie more years of control, so more value imo.

12:13
Comment From Bruce
O/U 2 saves ROS for Sergio Santos?

12:13
Eno Sarris: I read this as Romo at first hah. I think under. I like him, but Delabar and his immaculate inning have to have moved in front of him.

Is it safe to drop Albert now, or should we be stashing and crossing our fingers?

12:14
Eno Sarris: I dropped him where he was expensive in ottoneu and I was in contention. Keeping him in a place where I have room.

12:14
Comment From bdhudson
Frieri. Panic. Help.

12:15
Eno Sarris: The walks were a problem. And De La Rosa has velocity and better control and ground balls. But it is a little weird that he throws his 90 mph cutter more than his 95 mph four seamer. I’m not sure Frieri loses his job.

12:15
Comment From person hscer
Giavotella/Getz for Oberholtzer, who says no

12:15
Eno Sarris: Everybody.

12:15
Comment From James
how good can XBOX (Xander Bogaerts) be in a few years? are we looking at a hanley-type hitter with half the hanley speed? how much higher is is value in fantasy if he stays at SS rather than moving to 3B?

12:16
Eno Sarris: The batting average is the only question, and it makes him much more valuable at SS in that case. less speed than hanley too, but interesting in the same way.

12:16
Comment From Swing and a Miss Puiggy
this penetration of Scullpin into the greater Northeast will most assuredly lead to my beer consumption quota going way up

12:16
Eno Sarris: Drink it for IPA day today.

12:16
Comment From Steve
Is Wainwright a good sell high candidate? The guy is 31, gotta be heading for regression right?

12:17
Eno Sarris: Fresh ligament, great pitcher.

12:17
Comment From Fred G Sanford
Do you see any impact arms getting a call up in Aug/Sept?

12:17
Eno Sarris: Danny Salazar?

12:17
Comment From John
I’m rapidly approaching my 1450 innings limit, and need to dump of my pitchers. Who?! Scherzer, Harvey, Sale, Fernandez, Shark, Garza, Bumgarner

12:18
Eno Sarris: Fernandez won’t get you much and is probably a dropper soon when he hits IP limit. I’d shop Scherzer or Sale just because they more injury risk than Harvey, pitch in AL, and would have great trade value.

12:18
Comment From LarryA
I have a Stone RuinTen in my fridge, but Im too scared to try it. Have you tried it?

12:18
Eno Sarris: I have no idea why I have not found this beer yet. Don’t be scared.

12:18
Comment From Razor
I love the ballpark reviews on Beergraphs- keep them coming! Real helpful when visiting a new park.

12:18
Eno Sarris: Hopefully we can get those into an app at some point.

12:18
Comment From Swing and a Miss Puiggy
Would Ian Kennedy be a better 5×5 bet now that he’s in SD than the following: Quintana, Wei-Yin Chen, Brandon Beachy?

12:19
Eno Sarris: I would take him over Quintana, who I think is risky in that park and won’t get you wins anyway. Or Chen.

12:19
Comment From bdhudson
Why is everybody mad at the Pirates for not overpaying for a mediocre outfielder in a weak trade market?

12:19
Eno Sarris: Cause some writer trashed them for it. I’m more mad that they didn’t get the Stanton deal done, that would have been crazy.

12:20
Comment From Maxamuz
I may be a few minutes late Eno, I’m watching a video of a woman holding a baby who then proceeds to start a brawl at a Chuck E Cheese.

12:20
Eno Sarris: well done.

12:20
Comment From TWTW
Trade Archie Bradley for Yelich in a dynasty?

12:21
Eno Sarris: I think I’d take the position player in the bigs over the minor league pitcher, yes.

12:21
Comment From zach
Rosario or McCann ROS?

12:22
Eno Sarris: I like what McCann is doing. Always has more BA upside.

12:22
Comment From Dr. Met
With the Rockies crumbling and Fowler having horrible home/road splits, what do you gather is a reasonable return in a dynasty league for him? He’s an extra piece once Grandy returns.

12:22
Eno Sarris: Trade him for a pitcher? These are hard for me, come with names off the rebuilding teams rosters, that’s easier for me and more constructive.

12:23
Comment From Naive Steve
Cespedes has generally sucked this year. Given that we have only one prior season of MLB ball by which to judge him, is it possible that he is just a low avg home run guy but not a top 20 OF?

12:23
Eno Sarris: Low average home run guy with speed. Probably keeps him in the back end of the top 20. But yeah, last year’s swinging strike rate was probably prescient.

12:23
Comment From Bruce
Are we allowed to second guess the Rays for waitng so long to bring up Myers?

12:24
Eno Sarris: Well, the Ks were something he had to work on. And now he’s K’ing less in the bigs than he did in the upper minors, which is strange. Also, wait for some BABIP regression before we know his true talent. Obviously good player for them, but the extra year of control is very important to that team.

12:24
Comment From KJ
Which trade do you think has been “best” this deadline? i.e. balanced for teams involved

12:25
Eno Sarris: The White Sox Boston Tigers trade ended up where everyone got a good piece, and since prognostications are all over the place, it might be the most even. I think the Tigers did best, because I don’t see all this power projection for Garcia, but it was a great trade.

12:25
Comment From Just a friend
Alt-J! Who would you rather keep (5×5, shallow keeper league) Beltre or Machado?

12:26
Eno Sarris: There you go. AND he likes triangles. Beltre is going to start missing some time, but I like him better next year, and that’s all that matters. Especially since you can probably get something nice for Machado from a rebuilder.

12:27
Comment From Bird
What do you expect next year from Sonny Gray?

12:27
Eno Sarris: Straily type use, with slightly better results? Then again, Beane could trade Anderson or Milone, that’s his MO.

12:27
Comment From Bird
Do you think Teheran reached his ceiling this year or can he continue to improve?

12:28
Eno Sarris: I think he’s a little over his head right now, but I could see him improving to ‘deserve’ his results a little more.

12:28
Comment From Keeper? I hardly know her
Do you think that hitters with strong platoon splits are undervalued. After seeing McClouth this year I’m wondering why more teams don’t look for cheaper players like him

12:29
Eno Sarris: In real life, for sure, although it can cause some issues late in games, and roster management issues. Those roster management issues are the reason they are iffy in shallow bench leagues. Instead of having some upside on your bench, you’re stuck using two players to man one position. That’s a downside in real life too.

12:29
Comment From Nitz
Thoughts on Porcello, Kluber, and Quintana? What’s their true talent?

12:29
Eno Sarris: I’ll take Kluber. I like what Porcello told me about his curve ball, and it could iron out his split problem, but the fact that it’s gone in and out makes me a bit nervous.

12:30
Comment From Pork Sale
Who plays SS for the Cardinals opening day 2014? Is Wong an absolute no?

12:30
Eno Sarris: I don’t think they care too much about getting offense from their shortstop. Probably just one of their in-house guys again.

12:30
Comment From JT
what’s your favorite midwestern beer? StL/KC area mainly

What do I do w/Gregg, now? My roster’s jammed; I do own Strop.

Spring House Robot Surf Factory Pineapple Pale Ale. Was skeptical, but really enjoyed it. Worth a shot if you can get it.

12:34
Eno Sarris: Weird. I have a pineapple saison on the way to my house.

12:34
Comment From bdhudson
Cashner’s slider velocity has been slowly increasing. Do you think he can build strength this year and get some of that power back next year? Or am I just too in love with Andrew Cashner? That seems possible.

12:34
Eno Sarris: That’s interesting! I’ll take a look. I thought maybe he’d just let that pitch go to save his arm.

12:35
Comment From my sox r better than your sox
How much am I hurting my team in a 12 team 6×6 roto league (no keepers) by rostering Michael Pineda and George Springer. I’m in the middle of the pack and while i do not want to waste a roster place – our waiver wire is ravenous.

12:36
Eno Sarris: I’d drop Springer. A 30% strikeout rate in the minors does not scream “he’s going to debut on fire” while Pineda is at least King everyone in minors.

12:36
Comment From Pork Sale

12:37
Comment From Kankles
Are you buying Henderson Alvarez’ increased GB rate and a better fielding Miami infield ROS

12:37
Eno Sarris: Alvarez is so interesting. 96 with fastball, just doesn’t have enough bendy stuff. No Ks at all. He should try a knuckle curve or a split finger. Would change his life.

12:37
Eno Sarris: But yeah, right now, he’s a back end deeper league play based on better infield D, NL, GBs.

12:38
Comment From Meano Eno
ENO! I missed the first 20 minutes, favorite triangle?

12:38

12:38
Comment From Pork Sale
Who has lost more luster this year, Taveras or Profar? And I’m not saying its a massive amount, just wondering.

12:39
Eno Sarris: Might be Taveras. At least Profar is up and looks to be pushing for a role. Taveras got hurt, and now they talking Adams at first base next year, Craig in OF and Taveras hoping they get tired of Jay.

12:39
Comment From Chris
If you had to trade one of Liriano or Gio which one and why?

Rebuilding for next year, was offered Pujols and Yaider for my Rosario and Verlander. Keep 5, I’ll be keeping McCutchen, Goldy, Beltre definitely. Maybe keep Pujols/Yadier, also have Kemp to consider. Thoughts on selling on Verlander for 2 injured players? Normally wouldn’t, but the rebuild makes it more doable.

12:44
Eno Sarris: Nah. Pujols redundant in your keeper list, and Yadier is okay as fifth keeper, but Pujolls not useful. Be more likely to say yes with Yadier and jose Fernandez or the like. Shelby Miller.

Comment From Jeff
Would you rather have Rubby or Greg Holland in a dynasty for now and future

after this year, where do you see Braun getting drafted next in redraft leagues, and will it be too high or too low

12:48

12:48
Comment From Rubby of the Rose
Who should I keep out of: Corbin, Beachy, Sonny Gray, Salazar, Biddle, Fister, Syndergaard, Cosart, Heaney… Definitely keeping Matt Harvey, Scherzer. I’d like to keep maybe 5 or 6 total pitchers.

12:49
Eno Sarris: Corbin, Fister, Harvey Scherzer. Tha’ts four. Salazar might be tasty enough to keep even without much more info. Then you wait to see more info on Beachy vs Biddle vs Syndergaard.

12:49

10 team, keep 15 with only 3 bench spots. I love the guy, but should I be dropping Salvador Perez? In a position to win this year and have Russell Martin with Salvy on the bench, but could really use that spot to stream pitchers.

12:51
Eno Sarris: Sure. He’s batting average only, which is problematic at catcher. They have a .285 BABIP as a group, and he hurt his knee and is striking out more.

12:51

You should ask Hunter Pence about diet. He is one of the only athletes (in the major N. A. sports) who subscribes to the “Paleo Diet”.

12:52

Huston Street is back to being Huston Street now, right? His last month has been fabulous (k’s returning, no runs, etc.).

12:54
Eno Sarris: Actually the velocity is up a tick and the swinging strikes are coming back. Is true. I picked him up a couple times on trade deadline day.

12:54
Comment From Goat
Eno- how you doing? Actually got a non-fantasy question today, hope that is OK! Is there any evidence that batters hit less well when there is a guy on 1st trying to steal? Would think it could be a bit of a distraction…

12:54
Eno Sarris: Haven’t seen this tested.

12:54
Comment From Gila Monster
They have Goose Island at Fenway now!

12:55
Eno Sarris: GI signed with InBev I think. And of their widely available beers, only Matilda moves the needle much with me, although 312 is probably better than any big beer at a normal park, so congrats!

12:55
Comment From Bart
Sale for CC and Yelich a fair trade in a keeper league?

12:56
Eno Sarris: It’s okay. Mostly because there’s a lot of risk in that recoil in Sale’s delivery. But if it’s dynasty, Sale stresses his below, not his shoulder iMO, and that’s just a year off, which may not be such a huge deal.

12:56
Comment From Des
Should I drop Headley and let Prado play 3B for my team the rest of the year? Would stash Bogaerts with dropping Headley as well. Could keep Boga for 3 years. I need this!

12:57
Eno Sarris: I’d drop someone, but I like Headley. Nobody else? Prado better at MI spot.

12:57
Comment From Johnny Two Times
What do you think about Beachy next year? Will he be able to return to what he once was?

Eno Sarris: 2011 may not happen again but 2012 yes.

12:57
Comment From Bird
Chance Alex Wood sticks in the rotation next year? Sexy K rate but ive read he could be headed for the bullpen

12:58
Eno Sarris: They’ll give him a chance. And I think the bullpen risk is mostly because his delivery is so crazy people assume he’ll be hurt. See: Sale, Chris.

12:58
Comment From Fish
Eno / Eno’s Entourage: You all were very helpful with providing beer recs on my NYC trip. Start preparing some suggestions for San Francisco, I’m headed there next.

This lifetime ban thing for A-Rod. Would it be like a Pete Rose ban, or “just” an infinity game suspension?

12:59

Dear Dr. Eno, I’m having mixed feelings about my relationship with AJ Griffin — what with the hair, the glasses, the 1.11 WHIP, sub 2 BB/9, and my affection for his uncle Charlie (http://cdn.fangraphs.com/not/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Griffin-CU.gif). Can I forgive him for hurting me with the long ball?

wait there are people who complain about having too much burger? Too much bun is a significantly worse and more pressing issue.

1:06
Comment From TWTW
Third round? Wow. If a 2014 redraft was being done now, I’d take him 3rd behind Trout and Miggy.

1:07
Eno Sarris: Everyone is going to subtract numbers because of juice and look at last year’s numbers. Even just on numbers, the fact that he’s running less pushes him down into the turn for me, at least. By the third round I wouldn’t hesitate.

1:08
Comment From Goat
What are your thoughts on Sandoval RoS- is there an argument he’s better than Rizzo at 1B/3B given the lineup he hits in? Without Soriano, the Cubs ex-Rizzo are Miamiesque…

1:08
Eno Sarris: Yeah I guess you could go with Pablo over him. But Pablo is a shutdown risk because of injury.

1:08

Oswaldo Arcia or Josh Reddick? Keeper league, playing for next year.

far as i’m concerned, the worst part of the whole biogenesis thing is the fact that Selig has learned that he can basically suspend people for however long he wants as long as he threatens a longer suspension first and then “settles”. the MLBPA will even take his side!

1:13
Eno Sarris: Do not like this bit.

1:13
Comment From Cole
I am wondering what tier Brad Miller will rank among shortstops next year? He is still on the wire in my keeper league but I only have one waiver move remaining.

Losing Everth to Biogenesis. What are your thoughts on Villar?

1:14
Eno Sarris: So many Ks, but if you want steals and you in a deep league…

1:14
Comment From Fish
Wouldn’t you have a bigger hole to hit it through with a guy trying to steal? Especially if he actually runs, that puts two guys out of position. Unless you hit it right at a bag.

1:14
Comment From Ruki Motomiya
Isn’t the theory the opposite: Pitchers have to worry about the guy on 1st stealing so the batter is slightly better?

1:14
Eno Sarris: My bet is no effect because of all these effects cancelling out.

1:14
Comment From TWTW

Clemens was in Boston recently and stopped by Red Sox booth and told a story of when he pitched his 1st 20K game. It was a good story. He was late to park, jumped out of car, cop came up, said , arnet you..? Yes…took him to park. Threw 30 warmups, all balls. Hit first batter in the head, then went on to strike out 20 people.

1:16
Comment From Ernesto
Chris Johnson, overachieving or underrated?

1:17
Eno Sarris: You know what’s weird. He has legit oppo power. That’s the recipe for high BABIPs. .340+ career BABIP. So maybe he can do that, which will pump his BA up, and he has some homer power… it’s just that in real life, he doesn’t walk, defense suspect, strikes out a bit much. Really interesting player that I poo-pooed too much, maybe.

1:17

I think someone in my league doesn’t know Everth will be suspended and just sent me a deal – Gio/Everth (mine) for (his) Rios/D. Murphy.

1:18
Eno Sarris: Could be betting against it. Don’t feel bad about taking it. I felt bad about taking Ichiro/Blanton for Colon in a dynasty because I was sure, after Braun thing, that they were all screwed. Now it looks like Colon won’t get got a second time and I feel stupid.

1:19
Eno Sarris: Incidentally, I hate PEDs more for the suspensions and what they do to my fantasy baseball teams then what they do in real life, because I have no idea what they do in real life.

My friend and I were having a debate…who is the better pure hitter- Miggy or Joey Votto? I chose Votto but I think a lot of people would disagree with me. Votto is the guy I’d want up with the bases loaded and two outs down by 1 in the ninth

1:26

Rebuilding for next year, was offered Pujols and Yaider for my Rosario and Verlander. Keep 5, I’ll be keeping McCutchen, Goldy, Beltre definitely. Maybe keep Pujols/Yadier, also have Kemp to consider. Thoughts on selling on Verlander for 2 injured players? Normally wouldn’t, but the rebuild makes it more doable.

I would do it. Risk on both sides of the coin but more upside with the return.
