Eno Sarris: Tanaka may come back, so if you’re asking if you should drop anyone, my answer is no. You do need innings and PAs, so I think you’re doing fine.

what would you do with the Cubs infield logjam of Castro, Baez, Russell, and Bryant. I’d wait until the next deadline and decide between trading Castro or Baez, then call up Russell.

Eno Sarris: Yah I’m skeptical that Bryant is a third baseman, so it may be Bryant in COF, Alcantara at second and Baez at third. But one of the three should bust, by the numbers (at least), so Russell is a great insurance policy. May not have to trade any of them if you buy one good pitching FA and the rest of your 2/3s work out.

Need some advice. 10 team roto 5×5. I’m in first by 9.5 points and the guy is second is creeping up on me (mostly since he’s catching other people, not me). My best category in pitching is Ks. 100+K lead on the next guys. 6 man rotation with starts limit.

I have Strasburg and am getting frustrated. Since I don’t need the Ks, do I shift to a safer play like Tanner Roark?

Eno Sarris: No. I love what Strasburg is doing on K-BB and I htink I’d hold on to that.

Hi Eno. Hope you’re having a stellar week. This is a somewhat broad question, but I’m hoping you can provide some feedback. When you find yourself in mid-August with the chance to win a fantasy league, do you go all in? What I really mean by that is will you make trades that help your team slightly, even if you’re giving up a boatload of future assets in return? How do you draw the line between improving and getting fleeced? Thanks so much for the input.

Eno Sarris: I do trade pieces, but for example, I do try to hold on to my best young prospect (Seager, Russell in a lot of cases) and trade all the guys around it. Because fantasy is all about that ceiling. Productive major leaguers are often not productive fantasy players.

Eno Sarris: Well his athleticism was lagging and so maybe health helps him there. And he should have gotten used to the league by now, so maybe some of that is happening. But he’s not a great player at .280/7/25 or so.

Eno Sarris: In a keep three, yes. My “keep your best prospect” idea was more for dynasties. Taveras isn’t going to be kept on your team in a keep 3 anyway, I doubt.

Eno Sarris: Man him improvements in K and BB have been stark! And the power is still there. Only 150 PA or so, but K does only take about 100 PA. I’m more positive about him now than I was in the past.

Eno Sarris: If it was a two-catcher league, Lucroy gets real sexy. Dickerson and Myers at their cheap prices are interesting, but Donaldson is a top-two round talent at a decent price, and I like that you’ve got two infielders.

Eno Sarris: Mejia has a hernia that he’ll need surgery on, and calf issues, and is always broken, and 75 IP is fairly good for a reliever in terms of long-term health. Yeah I think he’ll get shut down and Familia gets the last month or so.

Eno Sarris: I wish they’d traded Beckham to the Giants. A’s going to go in with Gentry/Crisp and the Yanks got a third baseman in the meantime. Soria could be a closer, but so could a lot of people. Brad Miller?

Eno Sarris: Haven’t written anything like they have. What’s funny is that I liked the Orioles and Jays going into the season: get bats, amass arms and hope that some work out. What’s weird is that Gausman has gotten his chance but hasn’t been great, and the rest of the Baltimore rotation is about the same, but they’re hanging around. If they can survive the August homer onslaught in Camden, they’ll be fine.

Eno Sarris: I like the rumored offer he got in spring, which was 3/45 or 4/50 or something. That’s not terrible. He wants more. Giants frustrated with some of his conditioning stuff, hard to see them sticking in with a crazy bidding war.

Eno Sarris: Great question. By age and power, Calhoun’s upside is lower. But just for next year, Calhoun’s OBP upside is higher. Both have platoon issues. Eh, I think I still take the younger guy in Coors.

Eno Sarris: I don’t think so, there’s something I like about Braun’s plate discipline that makes me think he can be good longer. Also, Braun stole more this year, which means the SB advantage for Jones may not be large.

What exactly is Matt den Dekker? He’s always been a pretty good hitter, but this season he’s absolutely killing it in the PCL. Leading that league in average is impressive. Is this a fluke or the long term answer in New York?

Eno Sarris: He’s too much like Lagares to have both, but I guess they could platoon to be a great CF. Great defensively, and he just changed his stance and his K% has gotten better. Even with the new stance, I htink he’ll K around 20 and won’t walk a ton. Some power. Between Lagares and Den Dekker, I wouldn’t worry about CF. You got Granderson. Need to find one more OF.

Where do you find pitches per AB? I know Javy Baez swings at a lot of first pitches but he has had more 2-2 counts with a few foul balls. Everyone complains about no walks but he does see a lot of pitches, no?

Eno Sarris: you have to do the math at FG, we have pitches and PAs, so you can put them on a custom leaderboard. But p/PA has ups and downs. More leads to Ks and BBs and more power.

1) You can never have enough pitching so you hoard young pitching and you have guys come in for injured guys and you always have a ton of pitching.
2) Run environment is down, so you can find pitching. Build an offense and look for pitching.

Eno Sarris: Not bad, because those are the best peripherals for K and BB respectively. Could do something like xK%-xBB%, which I felt pretty close to, but xBB% might not be possible. Too much goes into it. Think of Lincecum turning balls into strikes with whiffs.

Can you sum up the “don’t draft/pay for pitching” strategy that seems to be popular here at fangraphs? Why is this an effective strategy?

Eno Sarris: For fantasy? Because pitchers get hurt more often, stay hurt longer, and are harder to project. The year-to-year correlations for pitching projections to reality are around .5+, for hitting they are .67+.

Eno Sarris: Well, Japan also has crazy different warm up and warm down routines, too. But yeah I think a six-man rotation could help some. Changing something that radically would of course lead to injury, no?

Eno Sarris: it’s different for all of them, but 100 for Ks is a good one to remember. 150 for GB rates.
