Eno Sarris: Hah that was pretty sweet. Baseball? Dunno. Affeldt showed me what a fosh grip looks like, Panik told me he misses on purpose, Chase Anderson told me he has two changeups really, and Inciarte splashed down in San Francisco as the best live baseball thing I saw.

Eno Sarris: Especially in the outfield. I think that’s cool, though. Once we improve the inputs for defense a bit, we can start looking at park factors for them, which are really just weather factors.

Eno Sarris: Dunno, that would be super weird for a catcher, especially one with all that hair. Daniel, though, will be in the mix. Stroman, Dickey, Buehrle, Hutchison… and then it’s Norris v Sanchez for the last spot most likely. Since Sanchez has been money in pen, I’ll put money on Norris.

Eno Sarris: High ass BABIP against righties, and as a righty with platoon splits in his past, that worries me for a bit. Back down at .275 with mellow power and patience, I see him more as an MLB average at third.

Eno Sarris: I think TLS will show a bit more power going forward and take that job for good. Love his OBP/contact rate. Could really work for a team with K issues.

Eno Sarris: From what I’ve read, he’s a two-pitch guy, so he’s probably their lefty for the forseeable future. But I haven’t seen him yet.

Eno Sarris: Look at Goldschmidt, who was supposed to be a platoon righty bat at best. Gotta notice. People coming around a bit on Vogelbach too, I think. That said, I’d be more interested in an arm killing the minors than a bat. Too many guys with slow but powerful bats mash in the minors. The Brandon Allen Thing.

Eno Sarris: Super long as a monolith, as a league. Because it’s taken this long to train hitters to hit the low pitch.

Traded Abreu away awhile back for Puig in a dynasty. Given Puig’s last couple o’ months, was this a mistake? Tell me what is happening with Puig. Please.

Eno Sarris: Puig is younger and has more five-cat upside. He’s hitting too many GBs and is just having a hard time hitting for power while also being patient. I think he’ll something like .285+/20+/10 next year, with power being the big question mark… but those extra ten bases even out the difference, and if he can power with speed, he can have a better year than Abreu in the next three.

For the most part, the guys that get drafted get a rookie contract that pays them well enough to pay for designer drugs that evade testing. How many baseball players get drafted and can afford those drugs right away? Ten a year? 30?

Eno Sarris: It’s not so much that I see Tyson Ross, human being as a reliever. I see Tyson Ross, as a thing, what he represents as a righty FB/SL guy with those mechanics, as a reliever. Ross may start for a while.

It’s good news, for one, that he’s a righty. There are no lefty Tyson Rosses.

Eno Sarris: It’s almost not rewarding when it takes this long. I was right… like last year. Pffft. Who cares. Yeah Storen’s got it. Watch the Giants. In the middle of a race, seems like even good work by the former closer doesn’t get his job back. Storen has to suck too.

Other people seem to think that Mookie is already a finished product. I love what he’s done, but how much growth does he have left?

Eno Sarris: It’s all about the power. He had some really nice power years in the minors. If he can ISO .180 or even .200, then you’ve got a really nice power/speed CF or 2B. If he only ISOs about .150 (body type would suggest that would still be a good outcome), he’s good but not fantasy first round great.

Say Brandon Rogers (McDaniel’s pick for number one prospect in the draft) was a FA. What kind of contract would he get?

Eno Sarris: I’d guess something slightly smaller than a Cuban import with similar skills? He’s played against worse competition so his translated numbers are less useful. It’s all scouting. His bust rate is probably around 70%, too.

Eno Sarris: Still a good second rounder for another year or two, but the risk keeps rising as he runs less. Built on athleticism, I’d say.

with regards to changing to 6 man rotations or other mesures to prevent TJs, it seems like 99% of the damage is done before the pitchers reach the majors, 6-man rotations wont save those guys.

Eno Sarris: Good point. But if we changed in the majors, we’d probably change in the minors. And college.. well college only plays a few days a week. Are we really blaming college? The pitching year-round as kids, pitching to the gun.. that part is way harder to figure out.

Eno Sarris: Very interesting. Yes. Because their poor D will be less of a problem with fewer balls in play. And offense is at a premium. Let the Vogelbachs of the world unite!

I haven’t had a chance to listen to the recent podcast where you discussed Sonny Gray. Can you by chance give me a quick synopsis of what to expect from him both ROS and in 2015? Thanks so much!

Eno Sarris: He’s good. But to be great I feel like he needs to find the thing he’s obviously looking for. Right now, he’s played with two changeups and a cutter. He has the slow curve and the fast curve. Any of these combinations could work, but I’m not sure they will continue to work without one of them getting a bit better.

Eno Sarris: Pitchers easier to talk to. Hitters admit it. Just yesterday Trumbo said, they are dictating the game, we’re just trying to react. Harder to get a hitter to open up about reactive process. Fewer metrics, ways in to the process of hitting.

Say Stanton is traded to a better and more friendly place, Would you be crazy to consider him 1-1 over Trout? He’ll hit more HR, probably have more RBIs. and hit for a similar average. And Mike Trout isn’t stealing a ton anymore. This could be a fluke thing, but Stanton has one less stolen base.

Eno Sarris: I don’t think he’ll hit for the same average. Maybe in a friendly place. I’d still take Trout for five cat goodness, but Stanton in Texas, for example, would be number two maybe.

The neighbors just got this beautiful shiba inu named Odin. Odin howls sometimes, I think because he wants to romp around and not be stuck in the house. Apparently, Odin came from a place where he was surrounded by wilderness and could just go exploring for two hours at a time. Well, two nights ago, Odin got out of the house at 1 in the morning. My neighbor–nice guy, not all there–would step out of his house every five minutes or so and yell, “ODIN! ODIN, COME HOME!” It’s not like I was going to sleep with that , so I went out looking for Odin. I found him, but he wouldn’t let me get close. Half an hour later, I was trying to convince the neighbor to stop yelling, because he was keeping me and a lot of other people awake, when Odin trots on by. It took me pointing him out three times to the neighbor, because he is hard of hearing and often stoned.

Eno Sarris: Only worry is that he’s already post-power peak. But yeah, I think he can do it for two-to-three more years.

After having read Kiley McDaniel’s three-part series on evaluating the hit tool, I feel licensed to say that Mookie Betts has a very good hit tool! (Swing planes or hand loads or something like that.)

Eno Sarris: yeah the hardest part in evaluating Betts for me was the hands. I saw him right before Eddie Rosario, and Rosario does something similar with his hands before. But Betts’ hands are way more ‘live’ and flexible, where Rosario was more stiff.

Eno Sarris: Just do a Yahoo public 5×5 roto league first. It’s easier competition, and it gets your feet wet. Later you can get into dynasties and complicated stats. The nice thing about 5×5 roto is that most analysis is geared towards it, too.

Eno Sarris: Shaved some infield flies off the top, which is great. Got injured again, which is terrible. Is young, which is great. I don’t think he’ll go to short, which isn’t great. Could .280/25/5 in a peak healthy season. Will he have a healthy season like that, and do you want to bet on it? I’ll buy him if I can buy two third baseman later on in the draft.
