so, um, is Alex Guerrero ever going to get a start?

12:01
Eno Sarris: They still trying to win games and they are pretty set at third, second and left field I guess. Maybe he’s next year’s third baseman or fourth outfielder, guessing utility guy.

12:01
Comment From Tony G.
Eno!!!!! What was the best baseball-related thing you saw over the past week? In terms of non-baseball related, please tell me you saw Mike Tyson’s interview with a local Toronto TV station!!!

12:02
Eno Sarris: Hah that was pretty sweet. Baseball? Dunno. Affeldt showed me what a fosh grip looks like, Panik told me he misses on purpose, Chase Anderson told me he has two changeups really, and Inciarte splashed down in San Francisco as the best live baseball thing I saw.

12:02
Comment From Little Papi
In terms of the final few weeks, will Mookie play RF, 2B or ride the pine on days when Rusney’s in the lineup?

12:03
Eno Sarris: I bet they ease Rusney in on the corners, and watch Betts a bit more at center.

12:03
Comment From Guest
Has Arrieta taken sustainable strides going into ’15?

12:03
Eno Sarris: Of course. The only thing I worry about with all those sliders is injury.

12:03
Comment From Guest
how far do we go when it comes to weather effects determining UZR? It seems impossible to quantify how much temperature/rain/wind is effecting a baseball

12:03
Eno Sarris: Especially in the outfield. I think that’s cool, though. Once we improve the inputs for defense a bit, we can start looking at park factors for them, which are really just weather factors.

12:03
Comment From Vmart for my Joey Bats
Perfect Timing as i’m about to hop on a treadmill – now i have something to watch, but my question: for 2015, i was offered V-mart for Joey Bats. I’m dwelling. Thoughts? Thx

12:04
Eno Sarris: Rather have bats. VMart will turn back into a batting average utility guy next year, I’m betting.

I have to thank you, Eno, for introducing me to Firestone Walker. That brewery pumps out a few absolutely incredible IPAs. Now that I have had the Union and Double Jack, the next beer I want is Pliny.

12:04
Eno Sarris: You win some you lose some lude.

12:04
Comment From Guest
Can Derek Norris crack Jays’ rotation in the spring?

12:05
Eno Sarris: Dunno, that would be super weird for a catcher, especially one with all that hair. Daniel, though, will be in the mix. Stroman, Dickey, Buehrle, Hutchison… and then it’s Norris v Sanchez for the last spot most likely. Since Sanchez has been money in pen, I’ll put money on Norris.

12:05
Comment From John
What do you make of Josh Harrison? Is he a flash or is going to be a 3-4 WAR player going forward?

12:06
Eno Sarris: High ass BABIP against righties, and as a righty with platoon splits in his past, that worries me for a bit. Back down at .275 with mellow power and patience, I see him more as an MLB average at third.

12:06
Comment From Vslyke
Where do you see TLS’ career going? His results this year have not been great and Gosselin and Peraza are going to push him for playing time (Gosselin already is).

12:06
Eno Sarris: I think TLS will show a bit more power going forward and take that job for good. Love his OBP/contact rate. Could really work for a team with K issues.

12:07
Comment From Guest
What do the Royals do with Finnegan next year? When does he crack Royals rotation (or is he bullpen material?)

12:07
Eno Sarris: From what I’ve read, he’s a two-pitch guy, so he’s probably their lefty for the forseeable future. But I haven’t seen him yet.

12:07
Comment From neal
who’s your favorite surprise player of 2014?

12:10
Eno Sarris: Dunno if he’s my favorite, but the biggest surprise to me was Dee Gordon. Thought he might be out of baseball because of no power, patience, or D. But when you’ve had a season like this and been in a GIF as good as this… well then you’ve won me over.

Just realized Carrasco starts tomorrow, with Fiers starting today. Start Fiers today, cross fingers, and depending on how he does, keep or drop right away and add Carrasco?

12:15
Eno Sarris: I’d rather start Fiers away from home, and I love Carrasco, so I’d do that.

12:15
Comment From Sadwick
I suddenly became a Dee Gordon fan.

12:15
Eno Sarris: Right? Can’t take himself too seriously if he does that.

12:15
Comment From Hamilton Porter
How much power does TJS sap from a hitter?

12:15
Eno Sarris: I don’t think it’s on the level of wrist problems or hamate issues.

12:15
Comment From hscer
Bryce Harper has 2 home runs in September. They came off Clayton Kershaw and Craig Kimbrel.

12:15
Eno Sarris: Rumors of his demise were premature.

12:16
Comment From Cubbie Blues
What kind of crazy minor-league stats would a player have to post before you felt confident in projecting major league success in the absence of scouting reports?

12:17
Eno Sarris: Look at Goldschmidt, who was supposed to be a platoon righty bat at best. Gotta notice. People coming around a bit on Vogelbach too, I think. That said, I’d be more interested in an arm killing the minors than a bat. Too many guys with slow but powerful bats mash in the minors. The Brandon Allen Thing.

12:17
Eno Sarris: Was it Brandon? I’m falling apart. I blame my early-rising son.

12:17
Comment From Dan
A sundry of articles on MLB pitchers throwing lower. This a big reason for Vmart’s pure domination this year?

12:18
Eno Sarris: Yes but now pitchers are starting to see the benefit of the other way around. Check my Peavy piece pubbing at 10/1. And all my Chris Young pieces.

12:18
Comment From Welkin
If Shoemaker had pitched from seasons start like he has so far would he have a shot at ROY or is Abreu just too far ahead?

12:18
Eno Sarris: All the homerz.

12:18
Comment From Tony Two Bags
Rendon is likely to finish with 20HR, 85RBI, 120 Runs scored, ~17 stolen bases. .280ish average. I know you were really high on him, but did you expect it this year?

12:18
Eno Sarris: Expected most of it except the stolen bases.

12:19
Comment From Rated Rookie
TLS uses a granite glove. I think it will be Peraza by June with LaStella as a bench/utility guy.

12:19
Eno Sarris: The last guy had a granite glove, I know he had more power, but it may not be the largest determinant of what happens at second base.

12:19
Comment From JBizzy
Could a pitcher have super long Targaryen white hair, or would MLB make them dye it or cut it. Thanks Buddy!

12:20
Eno Sarris: It’s not a uniform thing! As long as you don’t put a patch on your uni… I mean look at whatever that is Brian Wilson has going on.

12:20
Comment From Guest
Do you think the Cardinals will look at Matt Adams as a platoon bat heading to the future?

12:20
Eno Sarris: Certainly looks like it, and I think they do usually have the personnel to pull it off.

12:20
Comment From Guest
deGrom is another guy who seems to be benefiting from throwing high while everyone is looking low. How long do you think it will take for the league to catch up to those guys?

12:21
Eno Sarris: Super long as a monolith, as a league. Because it’s taken this long to train hitters to hit the low pitch.

12:21
Comment From Rick Lancellotti
How long until we reach peak Cuban defect free agent?

12:21
Eno Sarris: Let’s see how Guerrero and Rusney do. Their translated stats were not good. Utility bat level.

12:21
Comment From Rob
Traded Abreu away awhile back for Puig in a dynasty. Given Puig’s last couple o’ months, was this a mistake? Tell me what is happening with Puig. Please.

12:22
Eno Sarris: Puig is younger and has more five-cat upside. He’s hitting too many GBs and is just having a hard time hitting for power while also being patient. I think he’ll something like .285+/20+/10 next year, with power being the big question mark… but those extra ten bases even out the difference, and if he can power with speed, he can have a better year than Abreu in the next three.

Which rookie disappointment do you think will have the best ’15 season? – I’m thinking guys like Taveras, Bogaerts, Polanco, Odor, Singleton.

12:23
Eno Sarris: One of the ones with the best contact rate. Without looking, though, I’d guess Polanco over Taveres despite what I just said.

12:23
Comment From Guest
Paxton or Holland ROS?

12:23
Eno Sarris: Paxton. Dunno about Holland at home against tougher competition.

12:24
Comment From Stephen
What team would you guess has the biggest drop off next year in terms of wins?

12:24
Eno Sarris: The A’s face some roster questions, I’d guess. Milwaukee certainly makes us wonder how they got the wins in the first place.

12:24
Comment From Cubbie Blues
Fake trade time! Baez, Russell, and Pierce Johnson for Giancarlo Stanton, who says no?

12:25
Eno Sarris: I’d take that if I were the Cubs, maybe. Although I might rather stick Castro in over one of the other shorts.

12:26
Eno Sarris: Speaking of the Brewers, I investigated if their slide prompted their state and city to drink more. http://www.beergraphs.com/b…

Do you plan to visit the Portsmouth, NH area anytime soon? The craft beer scene is out of control right now. Best of the new bunch: Stoneface’s IPA.

Eno, is baseball pointless?

12:26
Eno Sarris: The point is its pointlessness.

What’s your take on exploiting the 200 Games Started limit on ESPN by starting 9 SPs on the day of your 200th start to end up with 208 total starts? Fair or foul? Big ramification on QS and IP as cats.

12:27
Eno Sarris: I do it. It’s in the rules.

12:27
Comment From Hamilton Porter
Which diminutive starter ( mind you I’m only 5’6″) do you like more going forward: Alex Wood or Stroman

12:27
Eno Sarris: Stroman has better velocity, a better body, and better mechanics, so I’ll take him despite the tougher league.

12:27
Comment From J
Brewery Vivant’s Undertaker is excellent. Starts like a porter and finishes with a light sour taste.

12:27
Eno Sarris: Nice. Almanac makes a sour porter if you can get it, you’ll like it.

12:27
Comment From Gila Monster
Brandon Morrow is kind of back and I am pretty sure I am the only person that excites.

12:27
Eno Sarris: Velocity! Things breaking!

Comment From Jimmers
Im going to Fenway for Sept 27th game vs yankees.. Should i be a little tiny bit worried about decking myself out in yankee gear?

12:28
Eno Sarris: I’ve done the opposite and just got a little light ribbing (no sex hair, is apparently what I have on my head).

12:28
Comment From John Farrell
Any chance that both Betts and Castillo crack the starting OF in Boston next season? How can anyone have faith in Victorino at this point? A gust of wind puts him on the 15-day DL!!!

12:28
Eno Sarris: I think Craig’s on the bubble.

Comment From Jimmers

Who will be your MVP in both league?

12:29
Eno Sarris: Trout will be my MVP. In both leagues.

12:29
Comment From Jake
Just guessing, what percentage of NFL players are on steroids, in all likelihood?

12:30
Eno Sarris: 60? Here’s the thing that’s structurally different about football. For the most part, the guys that get drafted get a rookie contract that pays them well enough to pay for designer drugs that evade testing. How many baseball players get drafted and can afford those drugs right away? Ten a year? 30?

12:30
Comment From Stratomatic
Trying to put Tanaka’s injury and Degrom’s rookie year in perspective. At the same price, which one would you prefer on a 7 year mlb contract ?

12:30
Eno Sarris: DeGrom. His injury issues were smaller, he’s in the easier league, and he’s younger. (I’m not sure I want any pitcher for seven years)

12:30
Comment From Sadwick
OK, I have a bag of cheap horrible fast food, a cup of stale black coffee, free work Wi-Fi, an Eno Sarris chat, and a hangover. LET’S DO THIS!!!!

12:31
Eno Sarris: Frame this.

12:31
Comment From Rockin Robin
Do you really still see Tyson Ross as a reliever?

12:32
Eno Sarris: It’s not so much that I see Tyson Ross, human being as a reliever. I see Tyson Ross, as a thing, what he represents as a righty FB/SL guy with those mechanics, as a reliever. Ross may start for a while.

It’s good news, for one, that he’s a righty. There are no lefty Tyson Rosses.

12:32
Comment From Tony Two Bags
You called R.Soriano turning to dust, though it took longer than expected. Is Storen the guy from here on?

12:33
Eno Sarris: It’s almost not rewarding when it takes this long. I was right… like last year. Pffft. Who cares. Yeah Storen’s got it. Watch the Giants. In the middle of a race, seems like even good work by the former closer doesn’t get his job back. Storen has to suck too.

12:33
Comment From Hamilton Porter
Other people seem to think that Mookie is already a finished product. I love what he’s done, but how much growth does he have left?

12:34
Eno Sarris: It’s all about the power. He had some really nice power years in the minors. If he can ISO .180 or even .200, then you’ve got a really nice power/speed CF or 2B. If he only ISOs about .150 (body type would suggest that would still be a good outcome), he’s good but not fantasy first round great.

12:34
Comment From Jake
Say Brandon Rogers (McDaniel’s pick for number one prospect in the draft) was a FA. What kind of contract would he get?

12:34
Eno Sarris: I’d guess something slightly smaller than a Cuban import with similar skills? He’s played against worse competition so his translated numbers are less useful. It’s all scouting. His bust rate is probably around 70%, too.

12:35
Comment From LarryA
you draft Adam Jones next year top 2 rounds, or does he completely drop off very soon

12:35
Eno Sarris: Still a good second rounder for another year or two, but the risk keeps rising as he runs less. Built on athleticism, I’d say.

12:35
Comment From LarryA
with regards to changing to 6 man rotations or other mesures to prevent TJs, it seems like 99% of the damage is done before the pitchers reach the majors, 6-man rotations wont save those guys.

12:36
Eno Sarris: Good point. But if we changed in the majors, we’d probably change in the minors. And college.. well college only plays a few days a week. Are we really blaming college? The pitching year-round as kids, pitching to the gun.. that part is way harder to figure out.

12:36
Comment From Derek Holland
I look fantastic this season! I know I’m not this good, but is it possible I could be a huge sleeper in 2015?

12:37
Eno Sarris: Let’s get more data against better competition. Still all fastball slider as a lefty, I need another pitch to take a step forward before I believe.

12:37
Comment From Big Joe Mufferaw
With offence being VERY low right now, do you think we will soon start valueing big time hitting prospects with no position more than prospects like Lindor (slick fielding, key position guys)?

12:37
Eno Sarris: Very interesting. Yes. Because their poor D will be less of a problem with fewer balls in play. And offense is at a premium. Let the Vogelbachs of the world unite!

12:37
Comment From Billy Beane
I haven’t had a chance to listen to the recent podcast where you discussed Sonny Gray. Can you by chance give me a quick synopsis of what to expect from him both ROS and in 2015? Thanks so much!

12:38
Eno Sarris: He’s good. But to be great I feel like he needs to find the thing he’s obviously looking for. Right now, he’s played with two changeups and a cutter. He has the slow curve and the fast curve. Any of these combinations could work, but I’m not sure they will continue to work without one of them getting a bit better.

12:38
Comment From Et Tu, Brute?
How much do you salivate at the thought of getting your hands on some spin data for pitchers? I sport big wo- ehh you get the idea

12:39
Eno Sarris: Yes. Already have an email chain going with a data provider about htis.

12:39
Comment From The Iron Sheik
deGrom, Wheeler, Montero with Harvey and Syndeergaard on the way, and the emergence of Lagares and d’Arnaud. Am I nuts to be very optimistic about the Mets next year?

12:39
Eno Sarris: I’m with you bro. Others think we crazy. Even if they have to lose Murphy and/or Colon to spend some money on power in the outfield, the rotation and pen look like they’ll be really good. Dilson looked competent.

Word on the street is you have done multiple nude scenes for Indie films. Confirm/deny?

12:42

12:42
Comment From Miketron
Is it time to get worried about Greg Holland?

12:43
Eno Sarris: Not really, not for this year, but watch those mechanics. I don’t keep relievers if I can help it, sell them as soon as I am at all out of it in my dynasties. And him, I would sell in a keeper because he’s falling off the mound with every pitch. That bad command, or injury, will return.

Avery adding a bourbon barrel aged pumpkin porter to it’s annual fall releases (joining Rumpkin). I’m not a huge fan of pumpkin beers, but it’s probably worth a shot.

12:44
Eno Sarris: I really enjoyed Almanac’s Sour Pumpkin. Like the only pumpkin I’ve liked.

12:44
Eno Sarris: If you do something other than cinnamon in a brown, then I might like your pumpkin beer.

12:44
Comment From Et Tu, Brute?
Eno! I feel like over the past year or so a lot of your writing has drifted toward pitching (grips, whiffs etc.) Was this a conscious decision? Is pitching more enjoyable to write about?

12:45
Eno Sarris: Pitchers easier to talk to. Hitters admit it. Just yesterday Trumbo said, they are dictating the game, we’re just trying to react. Harder to get a hitter to open up about reactive process. Fewer metrics, ways in to the process of hitting.

12:45
Comment From Klof
How much does the year of rest on Holland’s arm help him going into next season? Or does it hurt to not be working it constantly?

12:45
Eno Sarris: They can throw in the bullpen. I don’t believe that there is too much rest.

Say Stanton is traded to a better and more friendly place, Would you be crazy to consider him 1-1 over Trout? He’ll hit more HR, probably have more RBIs. and hit for a similar average. And Mike Trout isn’t stealing a ton anymore. This could be a fluke thing, but Stanton has one less stolen base.

12:53
Eno Sarris: I don’t think he’ll hit for the same average. Maybe in a friendly place. I’d still take Trout for five cat goodness, but Stanton in Texas, for example, would be number two maybe.

You are nuts regarding the Mets if you think they’re spending any money this offseason, or really any money in the foreseeable future

Comment From Snarfle
The neighbors just got this beautiful shiba inu named Odin. Odin howls sometimes, I think because he wants to romp around and not be stuck in the house. Apparently, Odin came from a place where he was surrounded by wilderness and could just go exploring for two hours at a time. Well, two nights ago, Odin got out of the house at 1 in the morning. My neighbor–nice guy, not all there–would step out of his house every five minutes or so and yell, “ODIN! ODIN, COME HOME!” It’s not like I was going to sleep with that , so I went out looking for Odin. I found him, but he wouldn’t let me get close. Half an hour later, I was trying to convince the neighbor to stop yelling, because he was keeping me and a lot of other people awake, when Odin trots on by. It took me pointing him out three times to the neighbor, because he is hard of hearing and often stoned.

12:55
Eno Sarris: Seems like this could happen to me.

Comment From Dave
Went to the Marlins Stadium for the first time. It’s very nice, but in a concert venue/basketball arena way. Not a lot of personality, and surprisingly the food choices arent great, besides a few stands that sell Cubans. Beer is the worst.

Eno Sarris: I meant this year, but that did occur to me as I was typing. It does mean he’s at more of a risk for TJ going forward, but could you call him at more of a TJ risk than Tanaka right now?

Kirk N., Mets baseball outfielder. Nifty 4th guy or nifty 3rd guy or just some guy who’s around until he isn’t?

Is 6’4″, 215lbs diminutive? You might still prefer Stroman over Wood, but it can’t be on size.

1:00
Eno Sarris: He’s tall! But skinny. Why did I answer that like he was short. Strange. I do think if the question is long-term health, I’ll still take Stroman. Wood falls apart on the mound like a toddler melting down.

I’m loving me some Lucas Duda in two points leagues. I was hoping for 22-23 HRs and maybe 75 RBI, got a lot more. Plus, all those points for walks. Do you think he can keep this up for the next couple of years?

1:00
Eno Sarris: Only worry is that he’s already post-power peak. But yeah, I think he can do it for two-to-three more years.

1:00
Comment From Snarfle
We’re at the point in the baseball season where I have little to add, other than “this is bonkers! Let’s see how it all plays out!” Which is great, because the games are less abstract. If the White Sox take 2 of 3 from the A’s, I won’t say, “whatever, A’s are better,” like I would mid-season, I’ll say, “Daaaaamn snarfle cats! Now the standings look like this!”

Are the whiffs Fiers is generating on his 89mph fastball the true suprise about him?

After having read Kiley McDaniel’s three-part series on evaluating the hit tool, I feel licensed to say that Mookie Betts has a very good hit tool! (Swing planes or hand loads or something like that.)

1:05
Eno Sarris: yeah the hardest part in evaluating Betts for me was the hands. I saw him right before Eddie Rosario, and Rosario does something similar with his hands before. But Betts’ hands are way more ‘live’ and flexible, where Rosario was more stiff.

Sup Eno? I’m looking into playing in a fantasy league next year. I understand the basics of fantasy well just haven’t played before. What are your suggestions for the off-season and what type of league should I play in? Thanks!

1:06
Eno Sarris: Just do a Yahoo public 5×5 roto league first. It’s easier competition, and it gets your feet wet. Later you can get into dynasties and complicated stats. The nice thing about 5×5 roto is that most analysis is geared towards it, too.

Did you hear Vin Scully’s call of the Dodgers’ 3-error play the other night? (They had it overlayed on the highlight on Quick Pitch on MLB Network.) It was amazenuts. IIRC, it ended with Scully saying, “Well, that was embarrassing.”

1:09
Eno Sarris: Yeah I heard it but I also just saw Jon Miller do Ruben Rivera’s trot around the bases “The worst baserunning in the history of baseball” and I’m sorry, I like energy. What do you think of Machado for next year? Will he start to realize his potential or is he just above average?

1:12
Eno Sarris: Shaved some infield flies off the top, which is great. Got injured again, which is terrible. Is young, which is great. I don’t think he’ll go to short, which isn’t great. Could .280/25/5 in a peak healthy season. Will he have a healthy season like that, and do you want to bet on it? I’ll buy him if I can buy two third baseman later on in the draft.
