Eno Sarris: I struggle with this one, obviously. Scouts say he has power coming, but I don’t see it. But if any park could coax power out of him, it’s the one he calls home now. He hits too many balls on the ground to be a power threat. But he goes oppo, so he might have a good BABIP. I’ll give him a .260 batting average with 15 homers and 5 steals.

Eno Sarris: I think you can keep two pitchers in a keep nine, but three is pushing it. Cespedes can .265/25/10 true talent, IMO, so him and Waino.

Eno Sarris: I’ve been burned before by interviews informing my opinion too much. Chase Headley convinced me that pulling the ball more was the source of his power and that was sustainable. (Well, I’m still a bit convinced and think he’ll have a good September actually.) And Castro said he was tinkering with his FB rate and he did and now he has power. I’ll put him in the top twelve, maybe top ten, but I can’t just pencil him back in for another 20 homers.

Eno Sarris: I think you’ll shoot yourself in the foot with runs if you start a pinch runner. If you are in a daily league and you see him in the lineup, you have to start him, but otherwise… nah.

In a keep 3 format, do you keep Fernandez as a 16th rounder?

Eno Sarris: I have this question before me, too, as a 24th rounder. I might do it in my league because it’s a k/9 league and starters w/ K/9 become more valuable. And in the past I would have had a hard line against keeping a pitcher in a keep three. But that’s a lot of surplus value. I might take the chance.

Eno Sarris: Yes, but I would target guys 28-31 or so. Get far past 30 and you’re risking yourself too much.

Eno Sarris: This comes from studying the early nineties beer bubble and from my recent BeerGraphs interview with Chris White, the king of beer yeast: open a local brewpub, and don’t distribute until you’re very sure you’re ready. Kill in a local market. People want to go drink local beer at a crafty place.

Eno Sarris: It’s for the nitro version of the beer. By pouring ‘hard’ you allow the nitro to … ‘mix’ I’ll say. You get the waterfall effect you see when you get a guinness on tap. Spreads the smooth mouthfeel around.

Eno Sarris: It’s too bad he’s striking out so much. But he’s struck out a lot at new levels and figured it out eventually. And his swSTR% says to me (10%) that he can whittle it down closer to 20% and have a .250-.260 type average once things click for him. With power and speed at second, it works.

Eno Sarris: I think they can both .260, but Miller has more speed and plays SS, so I think you can hold on to him. If you’re not using A-Rod much, or at Util every once in a while, you could risk it. But the playoffs are a crapshoot. Probably okay to let a rebuilder get him.

Was Haren’s start against the Mets an outlier? His velocity and Zone% seemed same as recent. For that game his BABIP=.692, FIP=.79 and xFIP=1.82. The only thing I find as a concern from the game is that the LD rate was higher for him than normal. Will he still be a good streamer vs weaker competition coming up (MIA, NYM)?

Eno Sarris: Haren was righting the ship, and I was prepared to tout him for those matchups before that game. Now I’m all out of love.

Eno Sarris: I do consider them if they line up with expectations of the park. Like if a Rockies pitcher is bad at home. For Redmond to be good at home in this small a sample, I think that’s just random. I like him for that Angels start though, just because of the matchup.

do the top rated ipa’s have such high BARs because the replacement level is so crappy? i’m trying to understand why some of my favorite belgian style ales all have 3-6 BAR– i assume because production in belgian style ales is generally pretty high?

Eno Sarris: No it’s the other way around. Replacement level for the IPAs is very high, highest in beer. But because they are drunk so much, they get a boost. 35% of the sample is a pale ale of some sort, but 45% of the top 100 is a pale ale. Because we have an adjustment for ‘number of rankings’ and that’s high for IPAs.

Is Nick Franklin not good? Everyone liked him and now everyone hates him. Learning curve or not a realistic long-term 2B option?

Eno Sarris: Semien does have a better K rate than Franklin, but Franklin has shown more power. And if Franklin gets his K% down — he’s done it before — then he’s better. Neither has a ton of pedigree. I bet scouts are divided on them. Sorry I don’t have a hard-line answer, but i haven’t seen a ton of Marcus.
