9:04	Paul Swydan: I think the basic point is this – the Orioles aren’t going anywhere unless Gausman steps up, so get him in there early and hope for the best.

9:04	Comment From Pale Hose I am probably the only person that noticed this, but Nate Jones’ 2014 stats look screwy. He faced 5 batters without recording an out, but the ERA/FIP/xFIP calcs assume he pitched an entire inning.

9:06	Paul Swydan: Depends on the pitchers, but I probably want at least one prospect. Gotta be a good one though. Don’t just keep a guy to keep him because he’s a prospect. Top 25.

9:06	Comment From Timmy and Tommy If I’m out of it, is it better to dynasty stock with a Buxton like prospect or one that may not do much until next year like Taveras or Joc Pederson?

9:07	Paul Swydan: Well, dynasty means different things in different leagues. If it’s really in perpetuity, then Buxton. If not, then take Joc.

9:07	Comment From Timmy and Tommy Is it worse to have no hope, like Rockies fans, or false hope , like the Astros?

9:07	Paul Swydan: Rockies fans have more false hope than the Astros, I think, since they actually have star talent. But, it’s definitely worse to have no hope. With false hope, you can at least enjoy a portion of the season.

9:08	Paul Swydan: In real life? I don’t think the Cubs need to make that trade. Easier for them to just sign Scherzer.

9:09	Comment From Edge O Carrasco nearly a K/IP on the season and has looked very good since returning to the rotation. Do you see him doing anything differently to explain the better command? Is this sustainable for the 2015 rotation? Nearly a K/IP would make for a nice sleeper.

9:09	Paul Swydan: I haven’t checked his splits to see, but I remember early in the season that we thought he was getting very unlucky. I’d wager that his luck has simply changed.

9:09	Comment From Edge O D. Pompey has been called up. Does he show enough ROS to warrant consideration for 2015 job?

9:09	Paul Swydan: You want to check Kiley’s post from today on that score. Good stuff from Kiley.

9:09	Comment From carz Completely hypothetical: Sea and Det tie for the 2nd wildcard spot, which means they play a one game playoff for the right to get into a one game playoff, correct? If so, if you are Seattle do you start Felix against Det, or hope to save him for the second one game playoff?

9:10	Paul Swydan: I save Felix and go bullpen game. And yes, you are correct. This is what happened last year.

9:10	Comment From Ed Evenin’! Who should I keep for the next 3 years in a league with a $260 budget and some inflation (top guys go for $60 or so), and BB and XBH as additional categories: Tulo for $39 or Dee for $6? Thanks!

9:11	Paul Swydan: I’d want to keep both, but that’s a lot of money for a half season of Tulo, which is all you can count on.

Completely appropriate use of your (or someone at fangraphs’s) time: find the game that caused the largest single drop in a team’s % chance to make the post season, and then find the most important event in that game (via WPA or some mumbo jumbo) and, well…let’s just call it the scapegoat algorithm.

9:13	Paul Swydan: Oh man, we did this question last week I think. Joey Gallo, Carlos Rodon are right there.

9:14	Paul Swydan: Well, we hired Neil Weinberg, Drew Fairservice, Kiley McDaniel and Ron Shah for the main blog. So that’s been pretty neat. And we launched InstaGraphs, which is also pretty neat.

9:14	Comment From Rick The Indians seem to be making a decent run, despite selling at the deadline. What do you think their prospects are for making the playoffs this year and in 2015?

9:15	Paul Swydan: Ya, the Masterson and Cabrera things.

9:15	Paul Swydan: Well, they were both going to be free agents, and both candidates to accept a qualifying offer if one was made.

9:16	Paul Swydan: So, I don’t see that so much as selling as it is getting what they could for them. They weren’t coming back, so it wasn’t that big of a deal to trade them. Especially since neither was playing all that spectacularly.

9:16	Paul Swydan: I don’t think the trades changed their playoff hopes, is what I’m saying. As for this year and next, still decent. Neither the Royals or Tigers have a stranglehold on that division, and of the three teams, Cleveland clearly has the best manager.

9:18	Paul Swydan: Honestly, I can’t. With Cespedes, Victorino and Craig around, I think there are trades coming.

9:19	Paul Swydan: No, I’m not sure why I would worry about a thing like that. We didn’t just wake up and find out the Rays are skinflints today, did we?

9:20	Paul Swydan: At least three. Probably five. It’s going to be awhile. They freely admitted to having no plan for Maikel Franco, their top prospect who they called up today.

9:20	Paul Swydan: Probably Oakland vs. the Dodgers.

9:21	Paul Swydan: But I like a lot of the teams in the running this year. I like the Nats, I like the Angels, I feel bad for Royals fans. Etc.

9:21	Comment From Keeper? I hardly know her Would you trade Adam Jones for someone like Buxton in a keep 20 (no salary). What about Jones for Buxton plus a pitcher like Jordan Zimmerman?

9:22	Paul Swydan: Definitely not Buxton straight up. I would only do the latter deal if I wasn’t planning on competing next year. Buxton isn’t going to help in 2015.

9:22	Paul Swydan: Tigers, easy. Have you seen their bullpen?

9:23	Paul Swydan: I mean, if I had any faith that Ausmus would do something creative like piggyback Scherzer and Porcello or something like that, maybe Seattle would be easier to face. But Ausmus is not going to do that.

9:23	Paul Swydan: I think the Royals and Tigers are for sure.

9:24	Paul Swydan: Probably stick with Arenado, since he’s more established. I don’t see Soler or Betts being that much better than him that it’s worth the uncertainty.

9:24	Comment From fsr About the Rays. Just put a stadium in Tampa ( not St. Pete ) and people will show up. That stadium is a real hike, especially since it is so ugly. Sadly, that team is being run as a dump and pump operation so a private equity team can profit off of it.

9:25	Paul Swydan: There isn’t going to be a stadium put in downtown Tampa anytime soon. Not happening at all.

Rendon is the best player on the best team in the NL right now. Only a half game of WAR behind the NL leader. Everyone agrees the NL MVP field is wide open, but Rendon can’t even crack the top ten? Sorry, I’m a huge homer for him, he’s also the most beautiful man in MLB at the moment.

9:44	Paul Swydan: I’ve been making up average like crazy lately. But a lot of it depends on the competitiveness of your league mates. If everyone is paying attention, that will make it harder. Darvish and Calhoun for Posey seems extreme, but if you can make up that many points I might pull the trigger.

Tampa built the stadium they were willing to build, when they were willing to build it, and when the lease is up there will be some shiny new economic center pining to pour public funds into a downtown stadium, no? Paul Swydan: I guess that depends on who is running the Rockies next season. Walt Weiss seems to have clued in on the fact that Dickerson can rake, but he largely had no choice, with Cuddyer and CarGo injured. So I’m not convinced he’ll play him full-time next year. But hopefully he won’t be there next year.

9:48	Paul Swydan: I think it’s probably worth investigating, but I’d prefer to go the Santo Domingo route. Or Brooklyn.

Charlotte leads the International League in attendance this year (http://www.milb.com/milb/st…), there is no other Major League franchise nearby and the climate is perfect for baseball. The Carolinas support NFL football, NBA basketball and even NHL hockey. Charlotte’s GDP is growing as well as it attempts to become a bit of a tech center. Right now the “home market” teams for the area is either the Orioles or the Nationals, something insane.

9:54	Paul Swydan: Probably either Las Vegas or Austin, Tex. When I studied this in grad school back in 2005, those were the two largest cities without a big four sports franchise. But I wouldn’t put a Major League Baseball team in either of those cities.

It’s not just about outdrawing a venue, it’s about regions of the country that have no real reason to follow baseball with no home team within hours. And in a part of the country that supports pro sports franchises and a healthy interest in collegiate sports. A team in Brooklyn wouldn’t do much to solve that.
