I take cabs a lot for work these days, and occasionally ubers/limos.
DO not trust that the drivers know what they are doing. The quality of the drivers has decreased a lot in the past decade and in many cities they barely speak english and don’t know the town or the traffic at all. They will also lie through their teeth about this. So don’t be afraid to speak up.
Yes you are often being annoying when doing so. No it is not worth getting taken 40 minutes out of your way to be polite. I have given a cabbie who had a gps the exact address of a hotel near the airport before, told him it was near the airport, and still been taken to a different hotel of the same name on the other side of town (I was on the phone and not paying attention).
