Crawford is the better player based on…the last three years’ accumulated WAR total? They’re exactly equal on that score. Crawford has a better track record beyond 3 years, but how much beyond a 3-year sample size is all that relevant? Crawford’s younger, so I get him getting more, but the contract he got looks like the deal the Nationals would have given to Werth if Werth were Crawford’s age.
These players are close enough that there’s no way the Nationals deal with Werth is stupid while the Red Sox deal with Crawford is smart.

Try putting yourself in those parents’ shoes. They’re phenomenally embarrassed, I’m betting. Meanwhile, their child has just been groped and/or irradiated. They have to go back to the drawing board on the whole “don’t let strangers touch you,” thing. And there’s a sneering guy on their flight, who is himself maybe two years away from having his own first bundle of joy. Parenting ain’t easy.
