Why chirp an 82 year-old for not knowing what the site is? How many people can honestly say they have grandparents that are internet savvy? Sterling has been broadcasting the Yankees since 1989, a pretty respectable tenure. This seems pretty disrespectful to me.

Let’s not go overboard here, it’s a simple joke. No one is making insensitive jokes about race, religion, gender, etc. here, so let’s not get too PC on everything now.

Jokes about age aren’t insensitive until you’re old yourself, right?

Ageism is a problem, but honestly, this doesn’t qualify. At all. It’s more “wow, you’d think the stats people or production staff would slip him a note at least”.

“Old folks don’t recognize the things the young kids are doing and/or understand technology in the slightest” are well-worn tropes at this point. Certain TV shows and comic strips beat that into the ground on the regular (with varying results). This is not mean-spirited in the least, no one was hurt in any way (presumably a very well-off old white guy can laugh off a playful barb). We have to be able to make that distinction, and laugh at ourselves.

When I’m 82, I hope I have better things to do than to pick petty fights, especially if I’m someone of Sterling’s stature. ‘Til then, I’ve got a shirt to keep me humble 🙂

I’ll forever defend John Sterling, and this is just his sense of humor. I’m pretty sure he actually is familiar with FanGraphs. You can’t really explain his sense of humor, which is self-deprecating for sure, but after a few decades of listening you know it when you hear it.

No. Sterling is not self-deprecating. He pretends to be self-deprecating but he’s one humble-brag after another. It’s all about him. His home run calls are quintessentially self-centered, making his call more important than the four-bagger.

Here’s a call for you: “John Sterling sucks. Ja-ah-ahn Sterling SUCKS!!!!” (Sung to the tune of “the Yankees win. The-uh-uh Yankees WIN!!!”)

Are you guys serious? Ageism?

This has nothing to do with age.

Sterling is an announcer in the New York market. He should damn well know “who Fangraph is.” I’ve suffered with this imbecile ruining game broadcasts for decades. I stopped listening to Yankees games on the radio (one of my great pleasures as a youth) at least a decade ago because of this annoying egomaniac. He is the absolute worst ever. He sucked when he was merely middle aged.

Hey, John, please, pretty please…. RETIRE already.

Let’s be clear. “I don’t know what Fangraphs is” is not a funny quote, unless said by Dave Appelman or something.

“I don’t know who Fangraph is”, meanwhile, is comedy gold. The wording is the funny part, not the ignorance.

Looks great! But I’m still not interested in a t-shirt. When you are able to put the saying on a coffee mug, I’ll buy several.

This really should exist as a T-shirt

+1 for reissuing the dateless shirt. I’d also buy some NotGraphs swag from the Cistulli X Perry collab. Anything Banknotes Harper-related.

My favorite part of that quick clip is the voice at the end with the long “naaaaaaawwwwww.” That voice sounds like one that has to educate and correct on a daily basis. It’s saying “how do I work with this guy who doesn’t have to know things, is perfectly fine not knowing things, and almost seems proud of not knowing things?” God bless that voice.

That voice is Suzyn Waldman’s and I can assure you she knows just as little as Jawn.
