Position: Colorado Rockies Analyst – Baseball Research & Development

Location: Denver

Description:
This individual will collaborate with the Research and Development team and will assist in the development and maintenance of a player information and projection system along with other statistical analysis and on field strategy. This position requires strong statistical development skills and experience as well as a demonstrated ability for independent curiosity and a commitment to excellence while working within a team framework.

Responsibilities:

  • Utilize advanced statistical techniques to analyze large datasets for actionable conclusions.
  • Design and document development of new analytic applications to assist in player evaluation.
  • Utilize existing Baseball Research and Development applications and databases in order to perform quantitative research related to baseball strategy and player evaluation.
  • Work with Baseball Research and Development team to design and integrate new statistical ideas into existing analytical systems.
  • Build automated solutions to import, clean and update datasets for use in downstream analyses.
  • Complete ad-hoc database queries to answer specific questions from Front Office colleagues.

Education & Work Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, and/or demonstrated knowledge and experience in a Statistical Field.
  • Experience developing advanced projection models.
  • Experience manipulating and analyzing large datasets through R.
  • Demonstrated knowledge developing large-scale functions in R.

Relevant Skills

  • Familiarity with other statistical software such as Python (SciPy) a plus.
  • Familiarity with relational database query and development in SQL Server or MySQL.
  • Familiarity with machine-learning concepts a plus.
  • Working familiarity with advanced statistical concepts, particularly those relevant to sabermetric player evaluation techniques.

Position: Colorado Rockies Systems Developer – Baseball Research & Development

Location: Denver

Description:
This individual is a Baseball Systems Full-Stack Developer that will work within the Baseball Research and Development Department to collaborate and assist in the maintenance and development of proprietary databases and APIs, as well as the implementation and maintenance of data extraction, cleaning, conforming and load scripts. This position requires a demonstrated ability for independent curiosity and a commitment to excellence while working within a team framework.

Responsibilities:

Database Administration

  • Maintain and update an internal data warehouse to support reporting and analytics.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose data issues within the data warehouse.
  • Design and implement necessary schema changes or additions.
  • Monitor multiple database environments including development, staging and production systems.
  • Provide documentation and reporting on the status of the data warehouse.

Extraction, Transformation and Loading of Data

  • Develop, test, and optimize ETL scripts.
  • Work with multiple data formats including XML, JSON, CSV, MySQL and SQL Server.
  • Review and analyze potential data sources for completeness, accuracy and validity.

API Development

  • Troubleshoot and maintain existing API Servers, as well as develop new APIs for future applications.

Qualifications:

Education & Work Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering or related field (candidates still in school with extensive work towards such degree will be considered).
  • Experience working with SQL-like databases such as MySQL, SQL Server or PostgreSQL.
  • Experience with a scripting language such as Node.js, Python, or R.
  • Experience collaborating on code with the use of source control such as Git.
  • Experience parsing XML, JSON and CSV formatted data.
  • Basic administration of UNIX-based servers, or Windows 2012 R2 Servers.

Relevant Skills

  • Knowledgeable about software development best practices and long-term maintainability of code.
  • Ability to effectively diagnose, isolate, and resolve complex problems pertaining to data infrastructure, integrity, and incompatibilities.
  • Experience working with NoSQL Databases such as MongoDB.
  • Familiarity with baseball and sabermetrics strongly desirable.

Position: Colorado Rockies Web Developer – Baseball Research & Development

Location: Denver

Description:
This individual will collaborate with the Baseball Research and Development team and will assist in the continued development of the Rockies’ proprietary Web Application. This position requires strong web development skills and experience as well as a demonstrated ability for independent curiosity and a commitment to excellence while working within a team framework.

Responsibilities:

UI/UX Design

  • Maintain and update an internal data warehouse to support reporting and analytics.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose data issues within the data warehouse.
  • Design and implement necessary schema changes or additions.
  • Monitor multiple database environments including development, staging and production systems.
  • Provide documentation and reporting on the status of the data warehouse.

Extraction, Transformation and Loading of Data

  • Develop extremely intuitive, easy to use interfaces and experiences for various applications and non-technical users.
  • Design for multiple form factors including but not limited to iPhone, iPad, Chrome, Safari, desktop, laptop, and large television size screens.
  • Design highly custom, easy to understand reports that showcase data and statistics in a creative and effective way for a variety of different users and use cases.
  • Create a design standard and style for all of our internal applications, reports and tools.

Web Development and API Integration

  • Maintain and contribute to various Colorado Rockies internal web applications.
  • Utilize data visualization libraries to create interactive charts and graphs.
  • Integrate with third party and internal APIs to retrieve and display data.

Qualifications:

Education & Work Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering or related field (candidates still in school with extensive work towards such degree will be considered).
  • Web development experience using HTML 5, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Experience using a Model-View-Controller (MVC) framework such as Angular.io, Backbone.js or Reacts.js. Understand the separation of concerns that an MVC framework provides.
  • Experience collaborating on code with the use of source control such as Git.
  • Experience with a Data Visualization Library such as D3.js.
  • Experience using a CSS library such as Bootstrap, or experience creating custom CSS libraries.

Relevant Skills

  • Understand software development best practices and long-term maintainability of code.
  • Ability to effectively diagnose, isolate, and resolve complex problems using debug techniques.
  • Familiarity with the rules of baseball and an understanding of sabermetrics strongly desirable.
  • Knowledge about working with REST APIs, JSON, XML, OAUTH 2.0.
  • HTML, CSS, LESS, Bootstrap.
  • JavaScript, CoffeeScript, Node.js.
  • Experience with MySQL a plus.
