Monday Cup of Coffee, 4/10
Daily notes on prospects from lead prospect analyst Eric Longenhagen.
Daulton Jefferies, RHP, Oakland (Profile)
Level: High-A Age: 21 Org Rank: 6
Line: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 BB, 2 K
Notes
Jefferies dealt with a shoulder injury last year at Cal and was 91-93 with a good changeup and fringey mid-80s slider in the AZL after he signed. This spring he was 92-95 with command, the same potential impact changeup, and an average curveball with more two-plane tilt than the slider had last year.
Ryan McMahon, 1B, Colorado (Profile)
Level: Double-A Age: 22 Org Rank: 15
Line: 3-for-4, 2 2B’s, HR, BB
McMahon struggled with swing and miss in the 2016 Fall League, but scouts remained intrigued by the power and picturesque swing even after watching him scuffle for six weeks. He’s hitting .412 after the opening weekend and, perhaps most notably, played Sunday’s game at second base.
Sam Haggerty, 2B, Cleveland (Profile)
Level: Hi-A Age: 22 Org Rank: NR
Line: 3-for-5, 3B
Haggerty dealt with an oblique strain during his draft year at New Mexico and then again last year but looked hitterish when healthy. He’s always been projected at second base by scouts but played shortstop yesterday.
Isaac Paredes, INF, Chicago (N) (Profile)
Level: Low-A Age: 18 Org Rank: 17
Line: 3-for-5, 2 2B
Paredes’ name has come up in multiple trade discussions dating back to last summer. He put up favorable numbers last year (KATOH really likes him) and impressed in-person scouts with his bat-to-ball ability, so both scouting and analytics departments have already identified this kid. He’s still playing shortstop but his body is very mature and scouts either think he’s ticketed for second or third base, with some advocating a move behind the plate.
Notes from the back fields:
Rockies righty Jefry Valdez was sitting 92-93 and flashing an above-average curveball in an Extended game on Saturday morning. Mariners 2012 second rounder Joe DeCarlo is being converted to catcher. He has been catching for about two weeks and his receiving was surprisingly good and already quite passable. He hosed a runner at second on Saturday, too, though his ground game is predictably raw.

Great work as always, lot of great nuggets. One quip though: Isaac Paredes was ranked in the Cubs prospect write up at #17. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/top-23-prospects-chicago-cubs/
Yup, fixed.
