Nicholas Minnix Baseball Chat – 7/3/14
8:45 |
: Hey folks! I’m filling in for Eno, today, and I won’t be chatting tomorrow, FYI. I’ll be with you at the top of the hour!
|
8:54 |
Eno: I think our banter is getting better. |
8:54 |
Nick: I agree. |
8:59 |
: I’m asking for a little of your patience, as well. I’m surely not as quick (or as knowledgeable for that matter) as Eno! But I’ll do my best.
|
8:59 |
: Rock. And. Roll.
|
8:59 |
Top 3 current AL closers that could be moved at the deadline? |
8:59 |
: Soria and Uehara are the only two I’m aware of who are distinct possibilities.
|
8:59 |
Please rank Alex Cobb, Mike Minor and James Shields ROS |
8:59 |
: The order you have them is mine.
|
9:00 |
Given that they’re both SS-eligible and easily two of the most discussed players in Fangraphs chat rooms, I can’t resist: ROS – Brad Miller vs. Mookie Betts? |
9:00 |
: Haha. Betts.
|
9:00 |
Wong or Gennett ROS? |
9:00 |
: Oy. I like Wong just a tad more.
|
9:00 |
What do you do with Ben Zobrist? |
9:00 |
: It depends on so much. If you want draft-day value in a trade, then you will probably be disappointed.
|
9:00 |
Think Jason Grilli eventually takes over as closer for the Angels? |
9:02 |
: It’s POSSIBLE. Previous health concerns and some things to fix suggest that it’s not highly probable. But the Halos wouldn’t mind seeing him emerge so that they didn’t have to trade for a CL. Which I could see them doing and paying for an established one, unlike many other clubs are willing to do, smartly.
|
9:02 |
Nick, I’m thinking its time to throw in the towel on Beltran. Keeper league and I can’t (and won’t) keep him for next year. If I’m looking for a successful hitter (don’t care about power or speed or position), who would you look at JD Martinez, James Jones, Chris Johnson, DJ LeMahieu, or Josh Harrison? |
9:03 |
: I can see it RE: Beltran. Martinez is intriguing, helps now. Jones otherwise because I know he can contribute heavily in SB – but, none of those stand out.
|
9:05 |
If Padres are able to trade Street and Benoit. Who gets the saves? |
9:05 |
B) Thayer, Patton … it doesn’t look great. Jason Lane? |
9:05 |
What will the Orioles do with me for the rest of the season? |
9:06 |
: You’ll be in the rotation permanently after the ASB, if not sooner, if they want to win.
|
9:06 |
What’s my deal? 5.11 ERA, but a 2.92 xFIP – That’s crazy. Also, where do you expect me to move to before the trade deadline? |
9:07 |
: Hard to say RE: trades. We’ve talked about McCarthy on the pod a few times, basically he has a couple of pitches that result in great batted-ball stuff and K’s, good control, but a couple of the pitches look similar, and if he makes mistakes or lacks command, he gets hit. But he should improve on 5.11 at least.
|
9:08 |
Just picked up D.J. Peterson, but then Maikel Franco became available shortly thereafter. I know Peterson probably won’t stick at 3B (hopefully, he’s the fix for the Mariners’ 1B mess soon), but who do you think has the brighter fantasy future? Thanks for your advice. |
9:08 |
: Franco, just a tad more.
|
9:08 |
Missed out on McGee and Betances in my league’s most recent draft. Do you think Tony Watson is the Pirates’ closer next year? Any other young eighth-inning types with closer potential and the stuff to help a little in a league that counts saves right away? Thanks for your advice. |
9:09 |
: Saves right away? Not sure I follow. There are plenty, but these things are difficult to predict because it’s not based solely on performance, obviously. I like the guy who got the SV for TB last night, Brad Boxberger, quite a bit.
|
9:10 |
Matt Carpenter was great at 2B for me last year in a 12-team 5X5 dynasty league. This year at 3B, not so much. I’d like to unload him, but the offers seem low. Should I deal him for a high pick in one of our monthly FA drafts (which, for context, have yielded Sean Doolittle, Derek Norris, Alex Wood, and Jesse Hahn in the first round so far), or hold in the hopes that his numbers start to improve? Thanks for your advice. |
9:11 |
: I don’t see anything wrong with his #s, not much different from last season’s. Your’e right, they play worse at 3B, if you went in with him as your plan at the position, then you were asking too much. If you need to build for the future, then the pick sounds like the way to go.
|
9:11 |
Hey Nick, 14 team league QS instead of Ws. Growing tired of Peralta and Bauer are either or both of them worth dropping for any of C. Martinez, Holland, Gee, J. Kelly, Liriano or Salazar? |
9:12 |
: I don’t view any of those guys as having a better chance to get QS, really. Or, there’s no rush, with Holland or Gee (just guessing, hard to say in your league). Holland or Gee may be a better bet for QS eventually. Will take some time.
|
9:12 |
How do you move older guys such as Ellsbury, Wright and Beltre for younger guys in a roto dynasty league? |
9:13 |
: You ask people what they want to give you for them. The contenders this year will come out of the woodwork.
|
9:14 |
I picked up David Dahl at the beginning of the year, as all of the more highly touted OF prospects were taken. I’ve been happy with what I see in the box scores so far. Any thoughts on his future (ETA, floor/ceiling, etc.)? Thanks! |
9:15 |
: Pretty nice ceiling, it seems, maybe a 20-20 type? I’m not too familiar with him, but I like what seems to be a combination of good control of the strike zone and athleticism.
|
9:15 |
Do you think Josh Rutledge is doing enough to take over at 2B in the near future? Thanks! |
9:15 |
: No. COL likes LaMehieu’s D too much. But it’d be nice to see Rutledge somewhere regularly.
|
9:15 |
Which two would you rather have in the long term: Gausman, Meyer, Crick, Zimmer, Wisler. Thanks! |
9:17 |
: Geez. All, so one of those darts would hit the bullseye. I really like Zimmer. Wisler and Meyer right behind him.
|
9:18 |
Any thoughts on Adam Duvall? He’s mashed at AAA, but his first week (SSS I know) was less than impressive. Is he a AAAA guy, or a possible Panda replacement? Thanks! |
9:19 |
: It’s possible that he’s a replacement, sure. My thought is that he’s better than a AAAA player but not by much. He’s platoon material maybe. Next spring will be interesting.
|
9:19 |
Hi Nicholas. Really enjoying your work since you joined Fangraphs. Is Shin-Soo Choo just having a better week, or are we seeing the initial signs of him turning it around? |
9:20 |
I think he’ll continue to turn it around a bit, but #s from last year are probably asking too much. |
9:20 |
Am I a better player in real life than in fantasy? |
9:21 |
: Haha, probably. But not by much. Gordon’s #s are – perhaps surprisingly, based on your ? – at the end of a year really quite valuable.
|
9:21 |
Looking for power/rbi from a MI spot. Currently running Howie Kendrick out there. Shoot for Utley, JRoll, Desmond? Pretty good on OBP. thanks! |
9:22 |
: Desmond or Utley appears to be your best bet then. Depends on what you mean shoot for. Kendrick suffices if you can make up the difference creatively elsewhere.
|
9:22 |
Any SP that struggled in the 1st half that you see having a strong/great 2nd half? |
9:22 |
: Cobb!
|
9:22 |
Who would you rather have as your Catcher in an AL-only league: Yan Gomes or Derek Norris? |
9:22 |
: ROS, maybe a wash, but I’d take Norris, and dynasty, Norris unquestionably.
|
9:23 |
I am trading for many Machado in a Dynasty league. |
9:23 |
: Congrats!
|
9:23 |
Hi Nick. Is it time to drop Segura in favor of Miller at SS? |
9:23 |
: I wouldn’t. Segura’s tools provide him with greater upside. Depends on your league, that’s my answer in a vacuum.
|
9:23 |
Hi Nick. Please rank with long-term value foremost in mind: Hahn, Alex Meyer, Shelby Miller, Pomeranz, Salazar, Smyly, Wood. |
9:25 |
: Geez. Wood, Hahn, Pomeranz, Smyly, Salazar, Miller, Meyer? Not sure what to say there, they’re all intriguing for one reason or another. These rankings of players w/o context and such are really difficult even with context. Pitchers fail.
|
9:25 |
Hi Nick. Does Piscotty have a place in the Cardinals OF next year? Do you think his power is still developing, or is what we see what we’re going to get? |
9:27 |
: Sure he does. They like him. I like him. I think what you see is about it, in terms of power, maybe he’s a 15-HR guy, 20 in career year possible.
|
9:27 |
Does Marcus Stroman’s additional work in the Fall League last year have any effect on his innings cap this year? |
9:27 |
: No generally that’s to build up a pitcher prior to this season. If anything it helps him this year.
|
9:27 |
Is Syndergaard keepable in a 12 team 15 player dynasty format? I’m in contention, and the fact that he may not help this year at all + general nerves about SP prospects makes me think the roster spot more valuable |
9:28 |
: Keeper questions w/o keeper limits are tough. If you can’t keep a lot of guys, then no, he’s not.
|
9:28 |
: 15 players per team? Definitely not.
|
9:28 |
Thanks for filling in! I am in a Dynasty league and am in contention for this year. I have been offered Reyes, Hamels and Cuddyer for Polanco and Cashner. My current SS is Xander, so Reyes will help unless he gets hurt. Hamels will make his way into rotation over Ian Kennedy. Thoughts? |
9:29 |
: Dynasty, that’s rough to deal Polanco, but you want to win. I think it’s a solid deal. Giving up Cashner – great talent, great pitcher – isn’t a big deal to me, I suspect that health will never be fully on his side.
|
9:29 |
Thanks for your time, Nick. Does Derek Norris ever take over as the A’s full-time C? |
9:31 |
: Yes, if Jaso is expendable heading into his final arbitration year. Almost full-time. Vogt could be re-signed. I think OAK is a little conscious of the way they handle catchers. But they value his bat, they must. I’d be happy with him going forward, I love his skills.
|
9:31 |
Thanks for your time, Nick. Any under-the-radar position prospects that have stood out to you so far as guys who will be jumping up the prospect lists by the end of the year? |
9:35 |
: Thanks to you for joining. This isn’t my area of expertise, so I can’t say with confidence. I think Rougned Odor’s MLB exposure will be valuable in the long term, although by then he might not be considered a prospect because of his service time.
|
9:35 |
Is my nephew Xander droppable in a non-keeper league? |
9:35 |
: LOL. It depends on whom you get – if better is available, then yes.
|
9:35 |
Is the 2014 version of Joey Votto what should be expected going forward? |
9:36 |
: Kind of. It depends on whether 85% health is a regular part of the profile now. He can be better, but he may continue at this rate and slowly get worse.
|
9:36 |
I am trading for Manny Machado in a dynasty league. The other guy is requesting either Gausman and Betances or Ventura and Tony Watson. Which duo do i give up? |
9:37 |
: The latter – I like Watson, but I don’t believe that he’ll close. Ventura long-term health concerns me more, although his ceiling is much greater than Gausman’s, I believe.
|
9:37 |
Matt Carpenter and Leonys Martin for Michael Brantley, who says no? How about the same pair for Heyward? |
9:38 |
: I’d love to give up Heyward for that duo. I’d rather keep the duo for Brantley – good player, just not great, and I always liked him, but this year everyone likes him more – I get it, his #s are really good.
|
9:38 |
Thoughts on Shields ROS? 12 team roto dynasty. Need SB’s. Could get Marte for him. In 3rd right now. Is he enough of a stolen base guy, or should I try to get Gordon. Could possibly get both but would have to give up a lot of SP. Probably Bauer and Stroman too. Thanks. |
9:39 |
: I wouldn’t be afraid to deal Shields for Marte. You know how far back you are in SB and what you need to do to make a move, I can’t say. I’d feel more comfortable acquiring Marte, perhaps strangely, but Gordon has more potential to move you up.
|
9:39 |
Best division in baseball….go! |
9:40 |
: NL Central? Right now.
|
9:40 |
U guys mentioned on the podcast: Putnam, Guerra, and Petricka. I agree about skilz of Guerra>Petricka. However, Petricka got a traditional save Fri (9th inning) and then closed out a 4-run lead on Sunday. Putnam had a 1.1 inning save in between. Also, last night he was used in the 8th. Doesn’t usage pattern suggest Petricka>Putnam?? |
9:41 |
: It’s a great point, and a good possibility. I like Putnam a bit more just because he shouldn’t hurt me, but Petricka may be better bet for SV.
|
9:41 |
What is holding back the Cubs from calling up Alcantara? His numbers look like he’s ready. Do they like Barney that much, or are they waiting to bring a bunch of their prospects up at the same time? |
9:42 |
: There’s no purpose, really. They’re not contending, so they don’t want to start his clock.
|
9:42 |
Machado or Arenado ROS? |
9:42 |
: Hmmm. Machado, by a hair.
|
9:42 |
Think Danny Salazar comes up and has similar success like last year? |
9:42 |
: I do think it’s a good possibility. He’s showing signs of turning it around in the minors.
|
9:43 |
Just sent out a trade offer of Scott Feldman for Bryce Harper think I’ll get a bite, or am I reaching? |
9:43 |
: Done!
|
9:43 |
So do you go by Nicholas or Nick or what? |
9:43 |
: Either is fine, people seem to prefer to use Nick because they’re syllable-lazy, what can you do? 😀
|
9:43 |
Is Alcides Escobar going to continue his first half production over the second half of the season? |
9:43 |
: Unlikely
|
9:43 |
Where will Schoop rank among fantasy 2B next season. Worth holding onto in a dynasty league? |
9:44 |
: Hard to say. Mixed league, low-end MI with upside, nothing specific I can say now. Worth holding? Who else would you get or hold if not?
|
9:44 |
What do you do with Michael Pineda in a dynasty league? Have a DL spot for him now, but is he worth holding onto at the end of the year? QS league with 40-man rosters and keep 35 each year. |
9:45 |
: If you can keep that many, I suppose. I don’t see him ever being healthy for long. If you have something more reliable and even with less upside, I’d consider it. Not for any old scrub, but someone who has a good chance to contribute. Or more upside.
|
9:45 |
James Shields- Hold or sell while we still can? |
9:46 |
: Depends on the offers. It should even out, but in the long run, it won’t get much better and will tail off.
|
9:47 |
If you could compare Alex Meyer’s future ceiling with a current/past pitcher, who would it be? |
9:47 |
: Ceiling is the same now as in the future. I can’t think of a comp for him, off-hand. The ceiling is really high, isn’t that good?
|
9:48 |
Hi, Nick! I was offered his Lohse, Polanco and Yadier for my Mesoraco and Shields. I don’t like Shields at all right now, but am I getting enough in return if I take it? |
9:49 |
: ROS? Redrafter? Debatable. I’d like to take my chances with it. Keeper/dynasty? Definitely, I’d do that deal.
|
9:49 |
Have we reached the point where it’ll take a miracle to get Buxton to the Majors before 2016? |
9:49 |
: Hahaha – um, miracle, not quite, but close to it. Sept. 2015 call-up?
|
9:49 |
You deserve to have tomorrow off, just like the rest of us. |
9:50 |
: Thanks!
|
9:50 |
Better days ahead for Chris Davis? |
9:50 |
: Surely. He’s mixed in some better days, earlier this season. There’ll be more.
|
9:50 |
Thoughts on Jeff Locke the ROS? |
9:51 |
: I like him, think he’s better prepared to handle adjustments and the pending corrections this time around because of his pitch mix. Still going to be some corrections, tho. I like him, he could play for a while in mixed leagues, like he did last year. I own him in one.
|
9:51 |
Will enough teams be interested in Daniel Murphy/Bartolo Colon that the Mets get good players in return? What’s the market like for those two? |
9:52 |
: Good players? Hmmm. In a package, I suppose. Neither nets a sure everyday player or mid-rotation starter on his own, tho.
|
9:53 |
Hey Nicholas/Nick, Who should I give up for Marte in a 10 Team H2H? I need steals! Gio, Gray, Kluber, Cobb, AWood, Keuchel, or Arrieta? |
9:53 |
: Me, I’d probably deal Arrieta. And I really like the guy. Just would try to play the %s, regression.
|
9:54 |
Aaron Sanchez is a guy most of the dynasty podcasts haven’t really touched on. He’s a prospect I’ve never understood and I still don’t understand the hype behind. I can’t get behind a guy with a career 5 BB/9. TOR seems to love him and have him fast-tracked. How do you feel about him and what league parameters (size/total # of keepers) do you feel he’s worth owning in? |
9:56 |
: I do like him, but I think your worries are legit. He was considered a level above Stroman in terms of talent, but Stroman is considerably more polished. If I could trade him while people loved him, I’d strongly consider it. But I like him, he has the TOOLS to improve that control, I think. Say 15-team mixed league, no salaries, maybe 15-25 keepers year to year? Hard to say. My goal would be to trade him, so I would hope to avoid that decision.
|
9:56 |
How valuable will Arismendy Alcantara be in the bigs this year assuming a call up is soon? |
9:57 |
: Maybe he gets a call after the break. Maybe it’s not until September. He should be owned when it happens, regardless, in most leagues.
|
9:57 |
who is closing in san diego next month? and do either benoit or street get moved someplace where they close? |
9:58 |
: Street is closing. And if one of them is moved, then I’d say probably. But it’s impossible to say, I think they won’t be moved.
|
9:59 |
Keeper league question. Seager or Arenado? Currently in 1st so want to make a run at it. 12 team h2h and no salaries or draft picks involved with the keepers. |
9:59 |
: What do you need? I like Seager more.
|
9:59 |
: Guys, I’m at the 9:00 ?s now. All the ?s are great early, just bear with me.
|
10:00 |
Put the Polanco hype aside are Granderson, Calhoun and Polanco pretty close in value ROS in an OBP league? |
10:00 |
: Hmmm … No, Polanco more than Calhoun likely, Granderson maybe – Granderson is just so unpredictable.
|
10:00 |
Hi, Nick. Would you be starting Cain in SD tomorrow? Or do you still not trust him? Thanks! |
10:01 |
: I have him, he’s in there for me – 15-tm mixed league. I have little to lose, though.
|
10:01 |
Jesse Hahn or Taijuan Walker ROS? |
10:01 |
: Man. Hahn, better environment. Close.
|
10:01 |
Who takes over for the Red Sox if Uehara is moved? |
10:02 |
: Tazawa, let’s say. Or committee.
|
10:02 |
Better waiver pickup. Drew hutchison, Gausmab, jimmy nelson, or mcchugh |
10:02 |
: Hutchison or Gausman … McHugh is close tho.
|
10:02 |
Will the Brewers find a way to use Jimmy Nelson by the all-star break? Guy is killing it in the hitter-friendly PCL. |
10:02 |
: I guess it’s possible, but I think they’ll wait until a need arises, don’t see it now.
|
10:03 |
Do you think Palpebon gets moved and would Ken Giles be worth a speculative stash? |
10:03 |
: No, I still don’t see that.
|
10:03 |
My cousin showed signs of heating up and now he’s falling back towards .200. Is this just a major off-year or do you see him bouncing back still and having a strong ROS? |
10:03 |
: Yes, still see strong ROS. EOS #s may not be great, so it’s an off year, but ROS, considerably more good than bad, I think.
|
10:04 |
If you could only keep two of: Melky Cabrera, Max Scherzer, Madison Bumgarner, and Zack Greinke who would it be? |
10:05 |
: Generally the hitter, but Melky is meh. I guess Scherzer has to be, but I would try to trade him and to keep Bum and Greinke (generally; your keeper rules may change my take).
|
10:05 |
Hi Nick! Which of these pitchers do you think will perform the worst for the rest of the season – Collin McHugh, Ian Kennedy or Matt Cain? |
10:05 |
: Haha, worst, I like it. Kennedy, with slight confidence.
|
10:06 |
Care to forecast what Dallas Keuchel will do ROS? |
10:06 |
: No. But I’ll guess anyway, 3.50-3.75 ERA, slightly lower pace for K’s. Would still be solid.
|
10:06 |
Need to find a SP for AL only league with QS. McAlister or Colby Lewis ROS? Lewis’ last two starts have been decent. |
10:07 |
: McAlister
|
10:07 |
Any chance Danny Salazar returns to CLE? Who would he replace? |
10:07 |
: Yes, eventually, after ASB maybe. House or Tomlin eventually.
|
10:07 |
Is Corey Dickerson still an everyday OF when CarGo and Cuddyer get back? If not, does he take over in 2015? Thanks. |
10:07 |
: No, and maybe, but probably still a platoon.
|
10:07 |
What do you think Travis D’Arnaud does ROS? Do you think he’s startable in a 10-team mixed H2H points league? Start 2 catchers. My other options are Norris, Jaso, and Zunino (wire options). |
10:08 |
: Norris, wire? Get him. Otherwise, d’Arnaud can be just as useful as Zunino, depends on pts for HR and such. Jaso more reliable.
|
10:08 |
Nick, are there any guys currently on the DL who aren’t owned in most leagues that you think would be worth picking up? |
10:08 |
: Aren’t owned in most leagues … Hmmm … No. If they’re not owned, almost assuredly not.
|
10:08 |
What should I do with Joey Votto? I’m starving for power, and kind of sick of his lack thereof |
10:09 |
If you want power, have to go find some, trade for it, if you need to trade him, sounds as if you won’t be sad. |
10:10 |
Looking at my 6th keeper spot, I have to choose between a $1 Oscar Taveras and a $1 Mookie Betts. It has to be Taveras right? |
10:10 |
: YES
|
10:10 |
What do you see as the issue with Chris Davis? His swing rates are fine, his plate discipline is improved if anything. His contact is down but only a very small amount. His batted ball distance is still very good. His LD% is actually up. So why is he so much worse this year? Bad BABIP luck? Better shifting? Will he get better? |
10:11 |
: He has a swing with holes in it. He’ll get better. If you drafted him with a repeat in mind, then you were destined to be disappointed. Wrote about him extensively on that at KFFL, I think, or in other sources. Just not that sound of a hitter. Still sick power, patience sir.
|
10:11 |
What do you think Gio Gonzalez does ROS? Are we looking at a return to 2013-caliber Gio? Something better? Something worse? |
10:11 |
: Yeah, close to 2013, sure, I don’t see why not.
|
10:11 |
Outlook for C-Mart the rest of the season? |
10:12 |
: 65 IP, 3.75 ERA, 7-7.5 K/9. Nothing outlandish or great.
|
10:12 |
Do you think every MLB stadium should be fitted with a retractable roof? The technology has to be out there so that it’s not ridiculously expensive. MLB should pay the bill along with the players union. |
10:13 |
: Haha, no, just because I think that has to be low on the list of priorities. But I could see some arguments for why not.
|
10:13 |
Does Santiago–if he can keep the walk rate down–displace Shoemaker as the Angels #5 starter? |
10:13 |
: Starting to have less belief that he does. But after the ASB, think it’s still a good possibility, yes.
|
10:13 |
Any chance Alcantara is up this month? |
10:13 |
: I don’t see that, no.
|
10:13 |
Please rank RoS: Begrudgingly Maintaining Interest in My Losing Fantasy Team; Begrudgingly Maintaining Interest in My Losing MLB Team; Begrudgingly Maintaining Interest in My Actual Problems |
10:14 |
: Actual Problems, Fantasy, MLB team
|
10:14 |
: Great question
|
10:14 |
16 team redraft mixed 6×6 (OPS and holds). My Rizzo and Porcello for his CDavis and Longo. I am using CJohnson at 3rd and it is my only week position. I have good enough pitching that I don’t need Porcello. |
10:14 |
: I like it.
|
10:14 |
Is Matt Cain droppable in a 12 teamer? |
10:15 |
: If better than Matt Cain is available, then sure.
|
10:15 |
Is Giles the Phillies’ closer by September. Or are they content/forced to stick with Papelbon? Thanks. |
10:15 |
: No. Yes.
|
10:15 |
: Maybe they aren’t forced, but I don’t think the Phils will elevate Giles automatically.
|
10:15 |
Jake Arrieta or James Shields ROS? |
10:16 |
: Man, tough call there, seriously. Range of outcomes here is wild. I’m going to say Arrieta, just because the upside is greater. Could tank it totally, though. Shields is reliable 3.90ish ERA.
|
10:16 |
How much job security does Joe Nathan have at this point? |
10:16 |
: Not a lot.
|
10:16 |
Kole Calhoun ROS a top 30 OF? |
10:17 |
: That’s ambitious, they rest him too often for that.
|
10:17 |
Will Xander turn it around or is there something more worrisome going on? |
10:17 |
: Worrisome is that he’s young. It happens. Still like him a lot in the long run.
|
10:17 |
Please talk to me about J.D. Martinez. Writers on the site seem to be divided. Latest dude on a hot streak, or legit talent? |
10:18 |
: Little of both. He’s doing some new things, they work. He’s been pretty decent before. Something to be said. Won’t keep this up, but this is potentially a late-bloom/reclamation deal, yes.
|
10:18 |
Xander or Mookie ROS? |
10:19 |
: Both MI eligible? What do you need? Bogaerts has more power, Betts more speed. Still kinda like both ROS, about equally.
|
10:19 |
More valuable ROS, Wilin Rosario or Derek Norris? |
10:19 |
: Oooooooh, man, you’re a tough one. I’m going Rosario. And I love Norris.
|
10:19 |
Are you in Waco? |
10:20 |
: No.
|
10:20 |
Who should I go with ROS @ 1B? (5×5 Cat.) |
10:20 |
: Lou Gherig.
|
10:20 |
: Gehrig? Crap.
|
10:20 |
JD Mart or Oscar T ROS? Thanks. |
10:21 |
: Oy! Great question. Coin flip. I pick Martinez, in his peak-type years more so. Riskier choice, tho, can’t say I’d have guts to trade Taveras for him.
|
10:21 |
I get plenty of Ks, I’ve been pitching well lately, how come nobody talks about me as a potential closer for the Halos? |
10:22 |
: Because you have failed in SV chances quite a few times before and have had but one good year in your otherwise miserable career. Maybe we’ll revisit.
|
10:22 |
Would you trade Stroman for Arrieta? Why or why not? |
10:23 |
: Not yet, because I don’t know what I’m getting in return. I’d generally look to deal Arrieta because he has long-term health worries – a bit more so than the average pitcher, anyway. May get you a lot right now.
|
10:23 |
Which middle infielder has a better ROS – Neil Walker or Eric Aybar? |
10:23 |
: Walker
|
10:23 |
now you and eno are just messing with us |
10:23 |
: Yes!
|
10:23 |
In OBP league – my R. Zimm, Polanco, A. Sanchez, A. Escobar for his C. Gomez & Kipnis, good deal? |
10:24 |
: Geez … what’s your goal with that? Could be, sure, in a vacuum, mixed league, fine, getting best player.
|
10:24 |
Who should I go with at 1B ROS? (5×5 CAT) Morse, Butler, Craig, Hosmer, Morales, Cron. Thanks! |
10:25 |
: 5 guys? Are they on your wire or something? Morse I guess. Like a few, if you have them all available, then play chairs.
|
10:25 |
Sandy Alderson said he expects the mets to have a better record, that they should be at least .500. So if your team is underperforming the expectations, thats on the manager, no? Fire TC!!! |
10:26 |
: Would seem that way if the GM is putting on that type of pressure.
|
10:26 |
Arismendy Alcantara or Mookie Betts ROS from the time of Alcantara’s call up? |
10:26 |
: Goodness. Alcantara. IF and from then on.
|
10:26 |
kyle gibson’s plate discipline profile won’t go away. with his improving f-strike%, zone%, and swstr% and great GB%, could we be seeing another keuchel type breakout? |
10:27 |
: Possible. I like him, former top prospect, past major injury. Next year will be interesting.
|
10:27 |
Better fantasy player next season…Alcantara or Bryant? |
10:27 |
: Alcantara, just next year, I guess. Definitely like him more next year.
|
10:27 |
What do I do with Kipnis? I’m in first place so do I hold steady? I have trade offers for Matt Adams, Polanco, and Werth. |
10:28 |
: I’d hold steady. All are reasonable gets for him, but it depends on a lot, including who’d replace him in your lineup, because none of those do.
|
10:28 |
can you name an OF that could be a fair offer for Altuve? I need SB. Thank you! |
10:28 |
: Nope, not without a lot more to go on!
|
10:28 |
27 yo Zealous Wheeler (NYY), career minor leaguer with 133 wRC+ in 2014 AAA just got the call-up over 23 yo Rob Refsnyder (165 wRC+ through 2014 AA/AAA) and 24 yo Jose Priela (124 wRC+ in AAA). Any idea why? |
10:29 |
: Because they aren’t ready to displace a veteran.
|
10:29 |
Trade Chris Davis for Jason Kipnis |
10:29 |
: if you need a 2B and have a great 1B to replace Davis with, sure.
|
10:29 |
: And your categorical needs justify the move.
|
10:29 |
Just been offered Morse for my Hosmer in a keeper league… I need more to give up on a 24 year old, right? |
10:30 |
: Depends on your keeper rules. Limited keeper, then no, because Hosmer is just a low-end 1B in a good year.
|
10:30 |
Just popped into my inbox, my Belt for his Gio. I need pitching but I’ve had a man crush on Belt for years. Keeper league where I can keeper either of them for 2-3 years. Thoughts? |
10:31 |
: Are you contending? Do you need a SP? It’s a good offer. If you don’t want to lose your man crush, then you’ve made your decision.
|
10:31 |
9:16 |
10:31 |
Is Shelby Miller broken? I’m about ready to sell low after holding onto him for 2+ years now. |
10:32 |
: Not broken, but functioning poorly. Growing pains, poor command or control, not sure which.
|
10:32 |
As a general rule, would you say that above average rookie SP’s tend to underperform their 2nd year as the hitters make their adjustments. Then the 3rd year, the SP’s adjust back and outperform again? |
10:33 |
: No, haven’t done any research on that. I think more often than not the opposite happens in the second year, but it’s just my guess. One or the other, not good then bad then good all the time.
|
10:33 |
What is up with Allen Craig’s ground ball rate? I am confused how he is hitting so many more GB’s but his BABIP is low? Can he turn this around? |
10:34 |
: It perplexes me too. He’s a very good hitter, hits everywhere before this, so I can’t help but believe this is temp. For how long, I don’t know. He already had one great surge, I believe more is likely.
|
10:34 |
This chat should be called “Nick chats with Snuffy & Jolly Roger” |
10:35 |
If David Price is moved to the NL, top 5 pitcher ROS? |
10:35 |
: I believe so.
|
10:35 |
MATT. DAMON. |
10:35 |
For streaming in H2H need a W with good rates – Cain or Lincecum both v Padres |
10:35 |
: Lincecum – on a roll right now, seems better choice
|
10:35 |
Are the Tigers just too good to be caught in the AL Central or will the Indians and Royals beat up the Tigers enough to make the AL Central race interesting? |
10:36 |
: I think they’ll prove to be too much, not a great team but good enough to fend off the ankle-biters.
|
10:36 |
Jesse Hahn has all four of the Padres’ wins this season! What do you think his numbers will look like ROS? |
10:37 |
3.00 ERA, 9 K/9, only another 50-60 IP possibly though. Be wary of shutdown in Aug./Sept. |
10:42 |
When you ask fantasy questions, please give some context (Drop X? I can pick up Y, Z or A. Keep X? I can keep only 5 and alread have Y, Z, A, B, C, D and E. League and roster size; AL, NL or mixed in some cases.). It really makes the question a lot easier to answer. It also helps me get to more questions and answer yours better. Thanks, to everyone, some great readers and askers around here, let me tell you. Have a safe and fun Fourth! Until next time. PS I’ll try to get us to cover a couple of things we discussed here in the next pod or three. Thank you! |
