The Decadent Moose: How does McHugh stifle the Cardinals for 7 innings with an ERA close to 5? (I think it dropped .7 last night)

Paul Sporer: A 5 ERA doesn’t mean you allow 5 every time out. He has a 4.89 this year and it includes 5 starts of a 60+ game score (anything over 60 is really good). Go look at someone like Colby Lewis, a true #5. To make 33 starts in this league with an upper-4.00s or even low-5.00s still requires a lot of good starts

Paul Sporer: I think he’ll have some rookie volatility, but strong enough to merit all-formats rosterability

Paul Sporer: Depends what you’re giving. But we have seen an extended run of success before. There are skills improvements backing the run, too. I feel comfortable trusting him

Paul Sporer: Ya I expect them to be active. They’re not going anywhere. I think those 2 will be up within a month, but that’s a pure guess (as it always is with prospects)… speaking of, Willson Contreras called up

The Kid: Todd Frazier – BB% way up from career rates and BABIP seems to be quite a bit lower than career rates, OBP is still pretty normal. What do you see going forward?

Paul Sporer: BABIP is low bc 40% of hits are HRs. I expect big power, modest-to-bad AVG, and some sneaky SBs.

A. Reitz: Any chance Frances Martes is in the Astros rotation out of Spring 16?

Paul Sporer: I imagine you mean ’17. There’s a chance, but I wouldn’t bet on it

Patty: I can’t get enough of Michael Fulmer. Just say a few words about him for me, please.

Paul Sporer: He’s really impressive. I think it was peeking through even in his early starts when the results weren’t great. He’d have runs of 8-10 batters where he looked amazing, but then would run into some trouble. Just standard rookie stuff. Really clicked v. TB with the emergence of his change

Tim: Haven’t seen any of JUp’s recent games but the production has been much better of late. Assuming you’ve seen some recent Tiger games, is he looking better?

Paul Sporer: Yeah definitely looks better. The thing is, even early he’d have a great AB or two and then nine shitty ones. He’s still having shitty ones, but it’s more like 3-4 good, 2-3 shitty. Only 23% K this month, so a big improvement

James: Would you trade Kluber and Revere for Starling Marte and Jon Gray? 6×6 H2H with OPS and K/9

Paul Sporer: Man, it’s tough to trade for a Rockies arm. And i think Revere is heating up. I’d pass

I’m in a league with 5 keeper spots from year to year and have 6 clear cut keepers (betts, cano, machado, sale, Thor, Degrom). I also have a few black holes in my lineup and am sitting in 4th, just out of the money. Should I look at trading syndergaard for a haul of 2-3 upgrades around the roster? I get weekly offers for him and I think he would fetch the biggest return in my league. Thanks !

Paul Sporer: Yes. You’re in 4th which means you’re very much in the hunt. Shore up your team and get that title

Paul Sporer: Oh Ichiro is better than Rose as a player. I kinda get Rose’s saltiness in theory, but who is honestly saying Ichiro’s the hit king now? People are acknowledging it bc it’s a neat thing, but I don’t see any ceremonies or anything. Ichiro is amazing, but he’s not the hit king. Japanese league just isn’t the same. It’d be akin to counting someone’s Triple-A numbers.

Tony: 14 team, OBP, 7 keepers: Traded my Fulmer for Mazara. Now I have an offer of my Colome for his Tanaka. SVHD league. Stream RP and get the starter? (Arrieta, Archer,Shoemaker, Mccullers,Gausman other SP)

Paul Sporer: Ya I’m much more willing to move closers in SVHD lgs

A. Reitz: Eno posted retweeted an interesting piece about improved stuff from last season. Kendall Graveman made several appearances. How is he so terrible? Chance for improvement?

Paul Sporer: Pitching is REALLY hard! Stuff alone doesn’t usually get it done long term. Doesn’t throw enough good strikes. Doesn’t miss enough bats. Elements are there, but needs more refining

Johnny Bench: Is Yan Gomes a significant upgrade at all to Chirinos at this point?

Paul Sporer: No, def not

Scott: Is it wrong to worry this Bryce Harper slump is more than a slump? If you remove first 19 games he’s hitting .210 with 4hrs and 14 rbis in 44 games. That’s a very small % of the season where he was actually good.

Paul Sporer: I get it. As I mentioned, I think the Maddon approach got him pressing. But we’re about 65 gms in. I bet a lot of guys would look p lame if you removed their best 30%

Paul Sporer: Depends who else is available, but I’m more of a believer than most so I’m trying to keep him on my team in any format

Paul Sporer: Or Mike Pelfrey… (I know he’s been non-awful results wise for about a month, but still). Anyway, I think Greene gets another shot. It’s been more health than skill behind any struggles. Even last yr is a bit of a pass for me once we learned he couldn’t feel his fingers. I’m still fully in on Greene, just waiting for the move back to SP

A. Reitz: Some of Martin Perez’ peripheals are nice, but that K rate is terrible and he looks like a 2 pitch SP. My question…at what point do you start working on another pitch?

Paul Sporer: He confounds me. I’m a big fan, espec. when I watch him pitch, but holy shit is a 1.3 K:BB so f’n awful! He’s actually got 2 breakers, but maybe he should just pick the slider or curve and focus on making it good. I still hold out hope for his skills to improve and backup a mid-3.00s ERA

Paul Sporer: Well he’s a really good player and SD hates those types, so yeah.

Paul Sporer: It would, that’s an interesting name. I really like Solarte. Can’t play v good defense, but a solid player for sure and good hitter. I think they’ll be more in the Solarte arena as opposed to finding an Cespedes-level impact on the market

Paul Sporer: Ya I think that’s a stretch. His splitter is lit and the curve is good. Expectations may’ve been too lofty (I was among those super-high on him), but he’s still just 23. I still see a future star

Paul Sporer: I’d try to keep Peralta & Manaea, but the others should have something enticing enough to the other owner to get a deal done. I like going for that Wiets/Waino combo

Paul Sporer: I am and I don’t think I’d drop him. Saunders might make the decision for you w/his tweaked hammy.

Paul Sporer: Cursory look doesn’t show any real skills growth (I assume we’re talking about the last 3-5 starts). Probably just a hot run.

Gordo: My offense has been great but my pitching has let me down. In a 13-team mixed league how confident should I be in recovering with a rotation of Sale, Quintana, Stroman, Odorizzi, Eickhoff, and Desclafani with relievers Betances, Ramos, and Dyson? I also have Wheeler, Boxberger, and Ottavino on the DL.

Paul Sporer: That’s not a bad rotation, but it needs work. Any of the hot pickups still there: Paxton, Duffy, Shoemaker? I’d scoop any of them. If not, stay on top of the wire for the next run of viable pickups. Jon Gray maybe as a road streamer?

b: 12 team keeper, keep in the round they were drafted. Is trying to sell Aaron Sanchez (22nd round) for Hosmer (12) or Piscotty (11) aiming too low? How about packaging Sanchez and Starling Marter (2). Trying to compete this year and worried about sanchez shifting to the bullpen

Paul Sporer: No, I’d be happy w/either bat for him. Really like Sanchez, but your concerns are merited re: IP limits

Bron: I am projected to finish about 800ish points behind in a winner takes all ottoneu points league but am also reasonably secure in 2nd place. How would you approach such a situation?

Paul Sporer: Ooh that’s tough. I’d personally be looking for ways to bridge that gap and give myself a shot. Is it just a superpower tm or a bunch the hottest starts on their tm?

Pitcher wins is stoopid: I’ve had this idea about pitcher usage and wonder what you might think of it. What if teams used their “setup men” to setup the “starter” in innings one and two. Three different looks for your opponent to deal with by inning 3 and your “Starter” isn’t in his third trip through the order until the 7th or 8th and in gerneral pitch counts might end up being lower for the season with a 7 inning maximum outing for starters. “Closer” could come in in a high leverage situations in 8 and 9 just like they do now. What do you think? Any team have a good enough bullpen to try this?

Paul Sporer: And I don’t say that disparagingly. He definitely beats this drum and it’s not an entirely unique idea. It’d take a lot to get a team on board. It’s probably one of those that’s better in theory than practice. Even the most logical gameplan won’t necessarily hold up in practice bc we’re still dealing with human beings and not just stat generating machines

Noel: Adam Eaton’s production is just so…boring. Still hanging on in 10-team mixed?

Paul Sporer: I hear ya, but unless there’s an option on the wire you just have to have, I’d hold

Chris R.: Piggybacking on Stanton, in a Roto OBP, would you trade Jay Bruce, Valencia or JUpton for him straight up?

Paul Sporer: Valencia for sure and probably even Bruce. I think the track record is worth buying low. This is like a legit buy-low so it has to be ugly to get the discount. But no one is going to be surprised if he has a 15 HR August or some shit

Nick: What do you think the rangers will do at/before trade deadline?

Paul Sporer: Hard to say exactly, but they will be active and prominently so, IMO

D: AL- Only Keeper: If Tanaka is my best pitcher and I’ve got guys like Happ, Miley, and now Shields rounding out my rotation, I should just pack it in and make some deals for next year, right? I’ve got good bullpen pieces but every start is like 5IP 5ER and killing everything.

Paul Sporer: Really depends what kinda movement you have possible in the standings. if you can still get the points to contend, then stay in it. but if you’re buried, move on

The Kid: Grandal – hurt, suffering from inconsistent ABs (even for or a catcher), or JUST a slump? What’s up with dude?

Paul Sporer: Always hurt and really impacts him. I really like his skillset at 100%, but he’s never at 100%. Kinda understand why he did PEDs. Not saying he shouldn’t have been punished when caught, but I get it

Davis: All this talk about the nats trading for chapman (or Miller) – granted those guys are great – but why not just bring up Lopez and Giolito to pitch out of the pen for the last month and hopefully the playoffs? Save the talent if the Yankees ask for a boatload.

Paul Sporer: I mean, this isn’t Playstation. You can’t just throw one of them in the pen and expect them to deliver high-leverage innings. Yes you gotta pay for one of those NYY RPs, but you also get something much better than what those rooks would do out of the pen.

Napoli was diagnosed w/it last yr and I thought it’d be his fix and send him back upward. Well he didn’t show anything until late last year bc he still struggled w/the apnea as he got used to the CPAP machine. Just bc Fielder is diagnosed doesn’t mean he’s cured. In short, I’m OK with those who’ve moved on, but I could see some improvements in the 2nd half if Fielder is in fact NOT hurt again w/the neck

D: Is James Shields no longer good at baseball?
