Paul Sporer: Believe me, these are some of my favorites, too. I swear I’m trying to help us. Like with Cole, I see the downside now, but I’m still comfortable investing at a pretty high price, just maybe not over those two vets I mentioned… or at least not both.

Paul Sporer: Eno has sold me on his talent. I watched him a couple times last year and had an eye on him, but Eno convinced me to look deeper and see some of the real upside w/him.

Paul Sporer: I’m not averse to taking the risk in more shallow leagues where I can leverage the waiver wire if he breaks (as we all seem to expect at SOME point). He hasn’t been commanding the bottom of the zone quite like last year just yet, but is that Spring rust or the elbow? I think we should be open to it being the former. I still need a discount (late-30s, early-40s among SPs), but I’ll invest.

Paul Sporer: Alcantara for me. I think he can be a fantasy star in the future.

Paul Sporer: Pomeranz for sure. And then probably Hahn and Mejia. I really like Berrios, but I don’t think he’s necessarily slated to be better than Hahn so take the guy we’ve seen do it (even in a short sample).

Thoughts on Shane Greene? I know there is some hype around him. Is he more of a flyer type, or does have a strong chance of having mixed league value this year?

Paul Sporer: I quite like Greene. He got a favorable outlook in The Starting Pitcher Guide (thespguide.com). I think he has the stuff to be mixed league viable for sure. Thankfully, his cost is low enough that even if he’s not, you’re don’t lose much.

Paul Sporer: The hitters came first – http://www.fangraphs.com/fa… … I just really like Maurer. I’m not against Quack, but I didn’t think it was too bold to project him as the emerging guy in SD since we all know about him. So it’s more Maurer love than Quack hate.

Hi Paul. What are your thoughts on Adam Eaton? Poised for a breakout possibly? Top 30 OF potential?

Paul Sporer: I’m a fan, especially in OBP leagues. He’s a better runner than he’s shown in the majors. He obviously needs to stay healthy which is a challenge given his playing style, but there’s tons of talent there and I like that CWS lineup so he could score a buncha runs!

Would you still rank Cole around the 15-17 range for SPs in a H2H pts league with 3 pt/IP or would he fall just because of lack of IPs/consistency?

Paul Sporer: I think he’s still up there. He hasn’t had the full workload just yet, but he did average >6 IP last year when he was pitching so if he does stay healthy, we’re getting the big 200+ IP season.

I’m trying to buy low on J. Upton in a keep forever roto OBP league where I won by 12 pts last year. Would you be paying name brand price for him just because? My starter is already Yelich. Other option is paying much less for Melky. thanks!

Paul Sporer: I’m an Upton fan for sure. I would pay market value in the right circumstance. I love Melky, but he and Yelich aren’t all that different so I much prefer the idea of a Yelich/Upton combo for the diverse skill sets.

I took Drew Hutchison as my 6th starter in a 12 team mixed roto league. I like his K potential but should I expect an ERA north or 4.00 or do you see anything that would indicate he can/will do better than that this year? Also, you enjoy SXSW or loathe it (I live/work int he middle of it and have mixed feelings every year).

Paul Sporer: I used to be a loyal SXSWer every year in college and the first couple out of college. Now I’m the old man/hipster who whines about how corporate and big it’s gotten. That said, I’m still going to Fader Fort tonight.

I love Hutch. I’m certainly betting on a sub-4.00 ERA. He showed some really strong flashes last year and let’s not forget, that was his first year back from TJS. So he deserves some leeway and yet was still impressive in stretches. If the slider improvements continue to help him against lefties and cut into that HR rate, he’s going to have a nice season!

what are your feelings on allen webster? he gets billed as a sleeper type here a lot but from watching him i don’t see it at all

Paul Sporer: The stuff is there. Literally nothing else is – consistency, mechanics (they aren’t bad, just kinda meh), the art of pitching (setting up hitters, etc…) so it’s a bet on development, but thankfully he costs nothing to take the gamble.

Have the chance to draft Karns in dynasty. I know he has a chance to open the season in the rotation, but what’s his ceiling long term?

Paul Sporer: I think he can be a solid mid-rotation type (fringe-3, strong-4 in real baseball, so like a 6-7 in fantasy) with strikeout upside (think: Odorizzi since they’re teammates and it’s an easy comp statistically)

Some of the A’s beat writers say the A’s are touting Kendall Graveman as the potential third starter. How valuable could he be in fantasy? His great control and homer rates give him a pretty high ERA/WHIP floor IMO.

Paul Sporer: Agreed. Maybe like a Henderson Alvarez statistically if things really pan out. I’m intrigued. He’s an AL-only target for me and a deep mixed league reserve.

Hey Paul, love the SP Guide guide. I finished 3rd in my 18 team keep forever dynasty, but am looking to contend again and need help with AVG and SB in OF so I can bench Ackley. I have strong pitching with Kluber,Cole,Cueto,Cobb,McHugh,Odorizzi,Holland, and Bailey/Corbin on the way back. Would you consider dealing Cueto for either Betts or Polanco? I aimed at dealing Cobb, but the injury killed that. Thanks.

Paul Sporer: Yes, I’d be open to moving Cueto for either of them in that kind of long-term league. Love Cueto, but a rising stud bat for a big arm is the way to go. I lean Betts, but it’s really a coinflip for me (though I know many others will be more aggressively in the Betts camp between those two).

Santana only has 1B eligibility in my league(12 team 5×5 mixed)…how early you going?

Paul Sporer: He doesn’t even have 3B? That’s a bummer, but I still like him. Round 6 is probably the earliest for me in that format because 1B is super deep, so probably looking to get him 7-8 ideally.

Paul Sporer: I think I just keep the hitters. I’m a McGee guy, but the injury and TB’s penchant for a revolving door at closer has me worried enough to even pass at a buck

What do you make of the Jaime Garcia resurgence? Does this mean Carlos Martinez is shut out of 5th starter for 2nd year in a row?

Paul Sporer: For now, but Garcia’s health record suggests MAJOR caution and thus you shouldn’t forget about C.Martinez or M.Gonzales.

Adrian Beltre as an AL only 3B — is he worth paying the premium for or would you rather fall back and pick from the Longoria/Sandoval/Headley/Machado bucket?

Paul Sporer: I’d rather fallback. More on this in our 3B preview – http://www.fangraphs.com/fa… Both and Eno were a little tepid on Beltre because the position is so deep and he could legitimately bust at his age. We didn’t PROJECT a bust, but given the alternatives, it makes sense to go elsewhere.

escalating salaries for every year you want to lock a player up woul you rather make ozuna a $10 player now to keep for the next two years, or a $15 player for the next three?

Paul Sporer: I don’t like to get too far out with any contract. Ozuna is a beast, but he wasn’t a blue-chip prospect coming up like Stanton or a Bryce Harper, so i think 2 years is fine.

In an NL only league with $270 cap dynasty league, would you move a $13 Miguel Montero for a $14 Michael Taylor?

Paul Sporer: No. I think that’s more than full price for Taylor and he’s not guaranteed beyond the injury timeframe to Span and Werth. Plus, if he struggles in that window, he will definitely see his time cut in favor of Gwynn Jr. or Tyler Moore (Gwynn to CF, Moore to LF in that scenario).

Paul Sporer: keep forever it’s Springer. I buy Brantley, but Springer can be transcendent.

The Reds are going to be better than most experts think. Ive heard alot of grumbiling about Jason Marquis but Homer Bailey is set to return after one missed start. Cueto, Bailey, Leake, Iglesias, and Deslcafini could be a serviceable rotation. Cingrani could be a GREAT setup man to chapman. The defense will be above average. The offense will get production with a Hamiltion, Phillips, Votto, Mesoraco, Bruce, Frazier, Byrd, Cozart lineup. This team could win the NL Central, right?

Paul Sporer: Sure, they *could*, but they are far from the favorites. I’ve actually been out there saying they won’t be too bad, especially the offense. I really hope Bailey stays healthy.

Paul Sporer: Springer, but I’m higher on Cespedes than most. I think he has a great year in Detroit. (full disclosure – I AM a Tigers fan, but I really try to stifle any bias and make sure I’m not just looking through blue & orange colored glasses).

You are a Tigers fan. Is there any reason for Bruce Rondon not to close in Detroit? He hits a 100mph and it doesn’t take a lot to push Nathan and Soria out.

Paul Sporer: He needs time. I’ve been spec’ing him in deep leagues. Soria was quite good for most of last year and he’ll probably get the shot ahead of Rondon. Plus Rondon is returning from injury. So feel free to speculate w/him, but temper expectations for ’15.

Saw you took J.A. Happ in one of your expert leagues (I can’t remember which). Are you a believer, or he is more of just a flyer type now that he’s in Safeco?

Paul Sporer: I’m a believer, but obviously Safeco helps. Interestingly, he did his best work in Toronto last year so it’s not just a home park thing. He has some legit stuff. Jason and I took him as a reserve in LABR Mixed.

Is Joc Pederson and Addison Russell enough of a return to part with Felix Hernandez in a 6×5 (add OBP) 16-team, keep 12 forever format (no contracts or draft round considerations)? As my name implies rebuild time has come in this long-term keeper league that I have won or placed 2nd in 5 years straight.

Paul Sporer: If you’re really re-building, then yes it is.

whats your strategy on pitching. I am in an NL only dynasty league, and usually top pitchers go for $30-35 range (well, except kershaw, he goes for like $45), I just dont want to spend so much of my cap on 1 guy. Do you need aces?

Paul Sporer: No, you don’t *need* them. There are so many in good arms in NL-onlys that you should be able to get a reasonable mid-$20s price on a guy with fantasy ace upside – Cole, Teheran, Wacha, deGrom, Wood, and Ross could all lead a staff and I doubt they creep into the $30s. AL is much tougher with the extreme attrition we’ve already seen so it’s pushing guys like Carrasco and Gray sky-high.

Have you watched much Kyle Crick? Think he could be a starter at some point?

Paul Sporer: Saw in AFL in ’13. Stuff is electric, but command isn’t there at all. He can be a starter, but it’s hard to see him being anything but a backend guy with those walk rates (15% career BB rate). Casilla is no spring chicken and Romo lost the role last year so they could be ready for a closer sooner, which might be where Crick excels.

What’s your expected regression (especially in SB) for Altuve this year? Would a wiser investment plan be Kolten Wong, 5 rounds later?

Paul Sporer: I think we can regress him to 2012-13 as a floor and go from there. I personally would prefer to wait for Wong.

Paul Sporer: Cashner probably isn’t too bold in that list, but I have more AL names than NL and I wanted to get two of each there.

Paul Sporer: I did. I like both a lot. Walker is progressing, but remember, it’s just Spring.

how important are Middle RP if the league stats include: baa / bbi / and holds along with Era and Saves?

Paul Sporer: I’d imagine that those categories give them a nice boost, but don’t overrate them. Holds totals aren’t nearly as high as save totals.

When do you think Carlos Rodon will be up? Worth stashing in a redraft league?

Paul Sporer: I could see him in mid-April easily if the need is there and it’s not like Danks and Noesi are huge impediments. But I’d draft him with a mid-May timetable in mind just to be safe.

The question I’ve fixated on lately: Rougned Odor or Kolten Wong in a keep-forever league with OBP and AVG? (I know those categories are a little redundant, but I didn’t make the rules.)

Paul Sporer: I prefer KW, but the pair just isn’t too far apart so it can really come down to preference in a league like that. At peak, I think Wong will be the better OBP asset

Woof. Loving the podcast glad we got towers of power back 😉 Keeper question. 14 team mixed, 27 man rosters (11 offensive starters, 6 pitchers, 10 bench spots), $270 salary cap. Keep 7. Currently keeping Tulo ($22), Betts ($6), Price ($22), Braun ($24), Yan Gomes ($6).

I’m really struggling with my last 2 spots. I am between Kipnis at $17, Hosmer at $15 and Sandoval at $12. Betts qualifies at 2b in my league, and, with the back spasm news, I currently have Kipnis on the outside looking in. What do you think?

Paul Sporer: Yeah, I’m not a huge Kipnis guy. I just don’t see the upside that so many others do, so I’d go with the two corners.

Paul Sporer: I don’t have enough experience to confidently comment on that for ottoneu, but I feel like your pair is probably better even with Betts still needing to prove it.

Weird lg where HR given up is a pitching cat. Any guys who move up and down for you with this cat?

Paul Sporer: Most guys have it baked into their price if it’s a downside, but guys like Henderson Alvarez, Dallas Keuchel, Doug Fister, Kendall Graveman, and Rick Porcello deserve a boost on the positive end. They lack big K totals, but the HRA category adds value.

In a deep AL only, would you stick with Felix, Sale and Hughes and try and dominate pitching with avg batting, or trade, say Felix for a downgrade in pitching and some batting depth? Tough to decide if losing my pitching edge is worth it, since every other team has avg pitching at best.

Paul Sporer: If the costs are exorbitant, just hold the stud arms and try to build the hitting around it. You can trade in-season if they prove to be overwhelmingly dominant and give you major leads in ERA & WHIP. And then that way, you’ll get more than trading ’em now. I’d have to see a real trade offer to know whether or not it’s worth it, but for now I’d say hold.

Perhaps a weird league setting, but we use R,HR,RBI,OBP,SLG, and nSB in my league. Is this the league you want to punt SB in and go all power everywhere?

Paul Sporer: Yes. I would definitely be doing that. Of course, I kinda do that in standard 5x5s, too, since SBs are easiest to fix in-season by trading for a rabbit or two. But this league really favors the power approach.

I’ve got Tulo in a deep 20 team keeper league, but have no backup SS. You think Jed Lowrie would suffice if I could get him cheaply?

Paul Sporer: I’d prefer a sturdier backup, even if it came with a lower ceiling. What about a Brandon Crawford? I actually think he has upside, too.

Paul Sporer: I like TV a lot (Bob’s Burgers, Kroll Show, Broad City, Key & Peele, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Archer, & Bojack Horseman to name a few). I’d say video games, but I really just focus on MLB Show, so that’s just more baseball.

Bought the SP Guide…Great Read!!! Need to know if Archer should be optioned for an additional year to $8. Current contract is $3 for 2015. I play in a 14 team mixed keeper league.

Paul Sporer: No, take him at the $3. I don’t like to give SP contracts too often. It’s not a bad price at $8, but can really maximize the value at $3.

If it was somebody else, I’d think it was just spring training and a team being overly cautious. But given his velocity being down 2 mph this spring per Jeff Zimmerman, and the time he missed with shoulder issues last year…how concerned are you?

Paul Sporer: Ugh, I’m growing concerned. He’s just looking like one of those guys who doesn’t have 200+ in him.

This is a long one so bear with me. Dynasty, keep forever, real life salaries and a cap. I’m at the medium-range of a rebuild where I’m maybe two years away but I’m really stacked with prospects. I have Freddie Freeman and need young relievers. I was offered: My Hosmer, Porcello, Michael Taylor (Nats) Almonte (KC), Hedges for his 1st round pick, Aaron Sanchez, Forrest Wall, Brandon Nimmo, Moya, Folty, Gillaspie (Rays/Connors brother). That’s a lot of parts.

Paul Sporer: Stick with what you’ve got. Too much unknown pitching coming back your way.

What did you think of the NFBC DC 50-rnd and draft and hold format? I found it excruciating at times, but also a bit addicting. During the draft i can’t want for it to be over, then i promptly sign-up for another one as soon as I finish.

Paul Sporer: I love it. I don’t get too bitchy about slowness of drafts when it’s a SLOW DRAFT. That’s one of the leagues where I took R.Iglesias, btw.
