2015 ZiPS Projections – Baltimore Orioles
After having typically appeared in the very hallowed pages of Baseball Think Factory, Dan Szymborski’s ZiPS projections have been released at FanGraphs the past couple years. The exercise continues this offseason. Below are the projections for the Baltimore Orioles. Szymborski can be found at ESPN and on Twitter at @DSzymborski.
Other Projections: Arizona / Atlanta / Baltimore / Boston / Chicago AL / Chicago NL / Cleveland / Colorado / Detroit / Houston / Los Angeles AL / Los Angeles NL / Miami / Milwaukee / Minnesota / New York NL / Oakland / San Diego / San Francisco / St. Louis / Seattle / Tampa Bay / Washington.
Batters
Manny Machado returned in May after completing rehab on his horribly ruptured left-knee ligament and the surgery to repair it. His slash stats were poor during that first month back (.220/.271/.284 in 119 PA), but by the beginning of August he possessed roughly the same park-adjusted offensive mark he’d recorded the season before (111 wRC+, as opposed to 102 wRC+ in 2013). His 2014 campaign ended in August when we underwent surgery to repair a partially torn ligament in his other knee. ZiPS doesn’t specifically “know” about the injuries — just the playing time lost to them. In any case, Machado is expected to replicate his slightly above-average batting line once again — with a little bit more in the way of isolated power than either of the past two seasons.
The breakout age-31 season isn’t a particularly common occurrence in baseball, but that’s what Steve Pearce produced in 2014, recording a 161 wRC+ and 4.9 WAR in 383 plate appearances. Characteristically, ZiPS is conservative. After hitting homers at a rate of 33 per 600 plate appearances, Pearce is projected for 26 every 600 plate appearances in 2015 — plus also a markedly more average defensive figure.
Pitchers
Six Baltimore pitchers accounted for 161 of the club’s 162 starts in 2014. All six of those pitchers return in 2015 and five of them appear in the depth-chart image below. Moreover, fewer than 1.5 wins separates the nominal “ace” of the staff (Chris Tillman) from the likely No. 5 starter (Miguel Gonzalez). There is, in short, considerable parity within the rotation.
Not featured in the depth below is Ubaldo Jimenez. Signed to a four-year, $50 million deal last offseason, Jimenez pitched poorly, producing both run-prevention and fielding-independent numbers about 20% worse than league average — much of that due to a career-worst 13.9% walk rate, the highest such figure among starters who recorded 50-plus innings. ZiPS calls for a return to something approximating league average, however, rendering him quite similar in that way to all five pitchers currently occupying a place in the rotation.
Bench/Prospects
Omitted from the depth chart below is David Lough (418 PA, 0.4 WAR), who’s likely to receive some playing time, and also Ryan Flaherty (330 PA, 0.7 WAR), who’s recorded more than 250 plate appearances each of the last two seasons. Among rookie-eligible players, outfielder Dariel Alvarez (408 PA, 1.2 WAR) receives the most encouraging projections for 2015. Meanwhile, pitching prospects Dylan Bundy, Zach Davies, Hunter Harvey, and Mike Wright are all projected to produce something between 0.5 and 1.0 WAR.

Disclaimer: ZiPS projections are computer-based projections of performance. Performances have not been allocated to predicted playing time in the majors — many of the players listed above are unlikely to play in the majors at all in 2014. ZiPS is projecting equivalent production — a .240 ZiPS projection may end up being .280 in AAA or .300 in AA, for example. Whether or not a player will play is one of many non-statistical factors one has to take into account when predicting the future.
Players are listed with their most recent teams unless Dan has made a mistake. This is very possible as a lot of minor-league signings are generally unreported in the offseason.
ZiPS is projecting based on the AL having a 3.93 ERA and the NL having a 3.75 ERA.
Players that are expected to be out due to injury are still projected. More information is always better than less information and a computer isn’t what should be projecting the injury status of, for example, a pitcher with Tommy John surgery.
Regarding ERA+ vs. ERA- (and FIP+ vs. FIP-) and the differences therein: as Patriot notes here, they are not simply mirror images of each other. Writes Patriot: “ERA+ does not tell you that a pitcher’s ERA was X% less or more than the league’s ERA. It tells you that the league’s ERA was X% less or more than the pitcher’s ERA.”
Both hitters and pitchers are ranked by projected zWAR — which is to say, WAR values as calculated by Dan Szymborski, whose surname is spelled with a z. WAR values might differ slightly from those which appear in full release of ZiPS. Finally, Szymborski will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on depth chart to produce projected team WAR.
Carson Cistulli has published a book of aphorisms called Spirited Ejaculations of a New Enthusiast.

Watch your ears around David Adams!
I actually love ZiPS. These projections just make sense.
I agree with you, while acknowledging that evaluating a projection system by how well it lines up with whatever projections we do in our heads is missing the point hardcore. (I’m not criticizing you, I do it too)
Yeah, they definitely seem more reasonable, of course that means nothing. I’ll bet on the ZiPS projection for Tillman rather than the 0.9 WAR steamer projects.
Here come the oriole fans!
Baltimore is one Jones injury away from having an LOL Outfield.
A LOLtfield?
Pearce De Aza Snider/Lough would be acceptable in a pinch. You’d basically be increasing Pearce’s plate appearances and/or taking them away from first and DH, and playing De Aza more in centerfield. Snider would get more at-bats (compared to the fangraphs depth chart page), maybe Delmon Young would take some more DH at-bats and Davis some 1B at-bats from Pearce.
The days of the LOLrioles are not so long ago, and seemingly not so far away.
Solid comment. Insightful.
OriLOLes works better
As an Os fan, I’m actually encouraged by Pearce’s projection. If you offered me a .355 wOBA right now versus letting things play out, I might take it.
Geez, what a crummy comp for Matt Weiters.
Nice though, that Rey Navarro’s comp link gives you a choice between Pete Rose and son.
They’re offensive comps – Bill Lindsey was a lousy defensive catcher while Wieters is an excellent one.
Projecting the entire rotation to be below-average? I’ll take the over. I wonder if anyone at FanGraphs would be willing to give me even odds on it.
Remember, starters have worse than league average ERAs (like an ERA+ of 96 or so) – so you could say that ZiPS is projecting the rotation to be collectively above league average!
(More pertinently, it’s say that the rotation is a bunch of average guys – no reason to freak out about a point or three of projected rate value)
That’s not what the projections say. Given a bunch of guys whose mean projection is 2% below average, almost certainly one will wind up above average.
Which specific pitcher to you think will be above average? That would be an even money bet.
Also because starters have higher ERA than relievers, I think a 99 ERA+ is actually above average, thus > 2 WAR projection.
“Whole rotation” can mean “rotation as a whole,” so that is, indeed, what the projections are saying. Obviously, I would not ask for even odds that one pitcher performs above-average, I know statistics quite well, thank you very much.
Would you give someone even odds for the over on the projection for the rotation’s net ERA-?
Does the projection factor team defense into the individual pitcher projections? Because it makes sense that the Orioles starters could outperform their projections, it just wouldn’t be because they are better than their projection but rather because the team has a good defense. I’m not sure if that is what you are getting at or not.
The O’s do have good defense, but their pitching is also better than one would expect by simply looking at FIP.
I mean, unless you actually think Miguel Gonzalez has managed his performance over the past few years purely by luck, which I think is a fairly burdened hypothesis.
Yeah, no one has ever outperformed their peripherals for 400 innings before regression set in. Jeremy Hellickson? Never happened.
I am surprised at the generous projection of Ubaldo. I really have no idea what they should do with him.
Take him out behind the barn.
Will Pearce really be limited to 300 PAs? The standings depth chart has him at 600 PAs.
ZiPS does not take the actual team plan into account, it treats PA like any other stat, and should probably be the projected outcome in which you put the lowest stock. That’s what depth charts are for.
I realize projections are mostly based on cumulative body of work over an entire career, but is any consideration given to the improvements young developing players tend to make? As it relates to the Orioles, Schoop and Gausman come to mind as guys who are very likely to be better than they were last year simply by progressing through the learning curve.
Overall I’d say these projections are very fair to the Orioles. They make a lot more sense than the Steamer ones that came out a bit ago.
For a team coming off a 97 W season seems there is a lot to write about IMO. Loss of Cruz and Markakis, and comebacks of Weiters and Machado, and possible bounce backs for Davis and Hardy. Got Machado and Pearce covered at least, but based on the numbers they don’t seem too promising for the rest/ Still looks to be a pretty potent lineup in a division that does not have much elite pitching.
Why comp someone to a guy who never played professionally? Brandon Marsters… really?
Brandon Marsters played professionally.
Pearce: I like the Steamer projections more than ZIPs. Drew Fairservice did a nice piece on Pearce and said he’s become a great high fastball hitter. Sure, you can try to pound the bottom of the zone against him, but if you miss high, he turns on it. And his walk rate indicates that he will wait for the kind of pitch he likes to drive.
Despite being short for a 1B, Pearce is very quick with his feet and gets to a lot of ground balls in the hole that Davis simply can’t. Unfortunately, Chris Davis doesn’t like to DH, so I’m guessing Buck will find all kinds of ways to use Pearce this year.
Wieters: I’m bullish on him, provided he can play most of the season. Last year he dramatically improved his BA against RHPs, essentially beating the shift before the arm injury put him on the shelf. Oddly enough, there was a corresponding decrease in his BA against LHPs.
So, split the difference. He probably won’t hit .300 or better against RHPs this year, but I think the improvement is real and I doubt he’ll hit an anemic .238 against LHPs—his career says he’s never had problems hitting lefties. I also think we may see him getting ABs as a DH if Joseph, a very good pitch framer, can hit at all.
So again, I like the Steamer projection for Wieters a bit more than I do the ZIPs projection.
So you like the more optimistic projections. Why do I not see this as surprising?
I know it’s easy to pile on fans who think that the projections underrate their favorite team, but at least this guy made a decent attempt at justifying why he thinks that, and at the very least he didn’t say something like “all the projection systems are low on these two guys”, he just sided with one over the other
How about putting a value on the manager. That’s the real story with the O’s
