2015 ZiPS Projections – Washington Nationals

After having typically appeared in the very hallowed pages of Baseball Think Factory, Dan Szymborski’s ZiPS projections have been released at FanGraphs the past couple years. The exercise continues this offseason. Below are the projections for the Washington Nationals. Szymborski can be found at ESPN and on Twitter at @DSzymborski.

Other Projections: Atlanta / Chicago AL / Colorado / Los Angeles AL / Miami / Milwaukee / Oakland / Tampa Bay.

Batters
The Nationals featured eight field players who produced a 1.2 WAR or better in 2014. All eight of them, with the exception of Adam LaRoche, appear in the depth-chart image below. All eight of them — again, with the exception of Adam LaRoche — are projected to produce a 1.8 WAR or better in 2014.

The weak point for the club remains the second-base position. Danny Espinosa is a defensive asset there and has above-average power (especially relative to the position), but his plate discipline has eroded almost entirely. According to ZiPS, middle infielder Wilmer Difo (1.6 WAR in 507 PA) is probably the club’s best option at second in terms of wins — although, insofar as he’s just barely played at High-A, that he’d play an important role at the major-league level appears unlikely.

Pitchers
As with their offense, the Nationals return almost precisely the same entire pitching staff in 2015 as they deployed in 2014. A sound maneuver, that, owing to how Nats pitchers produced the highest collective WAR among all major-league staffs last season. The triumvirate of Strasburg, Zimmermann, and Gonzalez alone have a higher projected WAR for 2015 than any of the five-man rotations projected thus far in this exercise.

Since 2010 — which is to say, Drew Storen’s first full season with Washington — Tyler Clippard has produced a better ERA and strikeout-walk differential than, and almost twice as many wins as, Storen himself. He’s projected by ZiPS to do almost all those things precisely in 2015, as well — and will do it, it appears, while setting up for Storen. Of note regarding that point: when Storen last worked as a full-time closer, in 2011, Clippard recorded almost the same gmLI* as Storen: 1.67 vs. 1.77.

*That is, average leverage index when entering a game.

Bench/Prospects
It’s quite possible that Steven Souza, recently traded to Tampa Bay, will produce an excellent season for the Rays as their starting right fielder. Souza’s departure doesn’t hurt the Nationals’ outfield depth significantly, however: both Michael Taylor and Brian Goodwin are forecast to play average to (in Taylor’s case) considerably above-average defense and hit enough to profile as at least a competent bench player. In A.J. Cole and Lucas Giolito, Washington has two minor-league pitchers projected to record major-league average seasons this year. Taylor Jordan, Blake Treinen, and Austin Voth also currently profile as somthing better than replacement level now, according to ZiPS’ computer math.

Depth Chart
Below is a rough depth chart for the present incarnation of the Nationals, with rounded projected WAR totals for each player. For caveats regarding WAR values see disclaimer at bottom of post. Click to embiggen image.

Disclaimer: ZiPS projections are computer-based projections of performance. Performances have not been allocated to predicted playing time in the majors — many of the players listed above are unlikely to play in the majors at all in 2014. ZiPS is projecting equivalent production — a .240 ZiPS projection may end up being .280 in AAA or .300 in AA, for example. Whether or not a player will play is one of many non-statistical factors one has to take into account when predicting the future.

Players are listed with their most recent teams unless Dan has made a mistake. This is very possible as a lot of minor-league signings are generally unreported in the offseason.

ZiPS is projecting based on the AL having a 3.93 ERA and the NL having a 3.75 ERA.

Players that are expected to be out due to injury are still projected. More information is always better than less information and a computer isn’t what should be projecting the injury status of, for example, a pitcher with Tommy John surgery.

Regarding ERA+ vs. ERA- (and FIP+ vs. FIP-) and the differences therein: as Patriot notes here, they are not simply mirror images of each other. Writes Patriot: “ERA+ does not tell you that a pitcher’s ERA was X% less or more than the league’s ERA. It tells you that the league’s ERA was X% less or more than the pitcher’s ERA.”

Both hitters and pitchers are ranked by projected zWAR — which is to say, WAR values as calculated by Dan Szymborski, whose surname is spelled with a z. WAR values might differ slightly from those which appear in full release of ZiPS. Finally, Szymborski will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on depth chart to produce projected team WAR.

What is Souza’s projection?

I would love to see Souza’s as well. I thought maybe he’d been added to TB’s projections since he’s not on this one, but no luck.

According to Twitter, Souza’s projection is 228/304/396. Gotta say, that’s not what I was expecting to see after he put up 300/396/557 in 2013 in the most pitching friendly league in AA, and then 345/432/590 in the pitching friendly Int’l League in AAA in 2014.

Can’t really understand projections sometimes…

Kid’s gonna be 26 in April, and they projected him for a .700 OPS (~.305 wOBA). That’s pretty outstanding, and very playable considering his defense.

If he hadn’t torn up AAA at age 25, and AA at age 24, he wouldn’t be getting talked about right now. That’s the only reason ZiPS thinks he can put up a 95 wRC+ in the MLB.

I think that 228/304/396 represents pretty close to the floor of what Souza (barring injury) would do in the majors. I was expecting the projection range for Souza to be from around roughly 750 to 800.

It will be interesting to see what happens. I read an article that ZIPS is the best overall projection system, but not as good as some others for players at the beginning of their careers.
