2025 ZiPS Projections: Chicago Cubs
For the 21st consecutive season, the ZiPS projection system is unleashing a full set of prognostications. For more information on the ZiPS projections, please consult this year’s introduction and MLB’s glossary entry. The team order is selected by lot, and the next team up is the Chicago Cubs.
Batters
To get this out of the way, ZiPS absolutely adores Chicago’s lineup, from top to bottom and every which way around. ZiPS and the Cubs have been on the same page before — the projections for Shota Imanaga last winter had me proclaiming that his deal was the offseason’s best signing — but the projections haven’t been this high on the lineup since the team’s World Series contention days. Now, a lot of that is defense, with Nico Hoerner, Dansby Swanson, and Pete Crow-Armstrong each having elite defensive projections. But there’s a lot of bat in there as well, with six starters projected for a 100 OPS+ or better, and two of the three who aren’t — Swanson and PCA — bolstered by their aforementioned defense.
Indeed, the system’s love for the Cubs was so intense that, as with the 2023 Diamondbacks (a team ZiPS absolutely drooled over), I made sure to double-check that something funny wasn’t going on by projecting the team using an older version of ZiPS. Much like Arizona two years ago, there was basically no change (0.2 WAR). The happy-Cubs effect has gotten stronger since the start of the winter, with the organization jettisoning a number of players ZiPS wasn’t high on (Cody Bellinger and Isaac Paredes), while adding a player who ZiPS has always liked (Kyle Tucker) and finding more playing time for Matt Shaw, who projects to be a decent starter right now. ZiPS even likes Gage Workman, who was picked up in the Rule 5 draft. It’s a smaller move, but while the computer isn’t optimistic about his bat, it had him as one of the best defensive third basemen in the minors.
Now, the playing time will come down once I do the Officially Licensed ZiPS Projected Standings, but the computer thinks this is a terrific group. It even likes the guys coming up. As it did with Michael Busch last year, it sees Shaw as a legitimate Rookie of the Year candidate, and thinks that Owen Caissie and Moises Ballesteros could be real contributors in the majors right now. And it already sees Kevin Alcántara as having a career projection of 25 WAR! I’m almost bored that there’s nothing to be mean about, at least as it pertains to the offense.
Pitchers
On the flip side, ZiPS is much less excited about the pitching staff, especially the rotation. Since the computer was already enthusiastic about Imanaga, it sees him about the same as it did last winter, and it likes Justin Steele just fine. But once you get past the top two and Matthew Boyd, who ZiPS really digs despite the injuries given his strong stretch run, it’s a rather “meh” set of projections, full of serviceable-at-best pitchers with ERAs fancied up by the team’s defense. ZiPS believes that Javier Assad can continue to beat his FIP by more than the defense contributes, but with a 4.48 FIP projection, you’re not going to see a projected ERA in the 3.00s, even with the adjustment.
With a luxury tax number under $200 million and no onerous long-term deals, the Cubs are a team that ought to be really involved in the offseason pitching market. There are still dudes on the board!
The projections for the bullpen are more optimistic than they are for the rotation, though they fall short of being elite. There’s an amusing consistency among the relievers, with ZiPS basically projecting everyone for ERAs between 3.40 and 3.90, with one notable exception. That exception is Nate Pearson, who still has a great deal of upside, but who remains rather risky; ZiPS would prefer that he and his 4.10 projected ERA be relegated to lower-leverage situations until he shows something.
Elsewhere, the projections for Cody Poteet are intriguing. The Cubs didn’t eat enough of Bellinger’s contract to get a real prospect, but the 30-year-old right-hander could be a valuable bullpen piece who can also throw the occasional emergency start. Ben Brown’s projection as a starter is already healthy, but as a reliever, ZiPS sees him as the best closer option on the team, with a projected ERA right around 3.00 there.
With ZiPS’ more conservative playing time, the Cubs are a slight favorite in NL Central as they’re currently constituted, forecast for 86-87 wins. But if they were to add a Roki Sasaki or a Corbin Burnes, they might very well project as the clear division standout.

Players are listed with their most recent teams wherever possible. This includes players who are unsigned or have retired, players who will miss 2025 due to injury, and players who were released in 2024. So yes, if you see Joe Schmoe, who quit baseball back in August to form a Norwegian Ukulele Dixieland Jazz band that only covers songs by The Smiths, he’s still listed here intentionally. ZiPS is assuming a league with an ERA of 4.11.
Hitters are ranked by zWAR, which is to say, WAR values as calculated by me, Dan Szymborski, whose surname is spelled with a z. WAR values might differ slightly from those that appear in the full release of ZiPS. Finally, I will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on a depth chart to produce projected team WAR. It is important to remember that ZiPS is agnostic about playing time, and has no information about, for example, how quickly a team will call up a prospect or what veteran has fallen into disfavor.
As always, incorrect projections are either caused by misinformation, a non-pragmatic reality, or by the skillful sabotage of our friend and former editor. You can, however, still get mad at me on Twitter or on BlueSky.
Dan Szymborski is a senior writer for FanGraphs and the developer of the ZiPS projection system. He was a writer for ESPN.com from 2010-2018, a regular guest on a number of radio shows and podcasts, and a voting BBWAA member. He also maintains a terrible Twitter account at @DSzymborski.
Kyle Tucker has a career WRC+ of 139 and 145 over the past 4 seasons and he’s projected to have a 129 OPS+… is that right?
Regression to the mean is cold-hearted
Maybe this is sarcasm but regression to the mean isn’t applicable here. His career OPS+ is 139 so regression to the mean would be to…139. Sure the ‘mean’ it’s calculating to might be weighted differently, but generally projections weight recent performance more highly so it’s especially confusing why his OPS+ projection would be 129 as he hasn’t hit below that level in a season since the shortened 2020.
I don’t see how the park change alone is going to account for a 10 point reduction in OPS+. Statcast park factors (3 year rolling) do see Wrigley as especially tough on HR for LHH (90 park factor) versus 110 for HRs at Minute Maid. But Wrigley is at a 99 overall for LHH and Minute Maid at 101. Last year Wrigley played especially poorly for LHH overall (90 park factor), but I also believe Dan has mentioned ZiPS uses some form of multi-year park factors.
And a shin fracture isn’t an injury known for sapping a player’s hitting ability like wrist or shoulder injuries so I can’t imagine that’s a contributor.
ZiPS is projecting a somewhat low BABIP as well (.275 proj. vs. .284 career)
Must be missing something that ZiPS is seeing.
You’re assuming his true talent level in Wrigley is 139. That’s pretty unlikely, or at least ZIPS thinks so.
Can you point to where I made that assumption? My assumption related to park factors is that going from a 101 LHH park factor to a 99 LHH park factor wouldn’t lead to a 10 point drop in OPS+.
I quite literally point to it as a potential contributing factor.
Yeah, came here to say the same. Tucker’s offensive production seems low.
But those comps!
Brutal projection for Kyle Tucker. I get Wrigley is not good for LH hitters but wow. If those numbers are close to reality 2 things are going to happen. A) Cubs fans will be extremely disappointed and B) Kyle Tucker will never sign there.
It feels like he kind of has to do better than that, and if he doesn’t it’s going to be a huge letdown.
Can we get a Cody Bellinger projection?
Very glad to see that Matt Shaw is rated mostly correctly on defense. He’s not some star defender, but he’s not much worse than average. That 35 FV on his defense was always nonsense.
The Cubs are reportedly in on Luzardo and he’s a very talented pitcher but really 2023 was the only year he’s held up health wise for a full season. The Cubs should aim higher.
recent reporting says the deal is dead.
I heard some guy was killed in NYC and they never solved the case. But Nico Hoerner wouldn’t know anything about that would he?
huh?
you don’t know when to keep your mouth shut.
You watch too many movies!
MATTINGLY! I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU TO TRIM THOSE SIDEBURNS!
still like him better than Steinbrenner…
Higher cumulative WAR for the bullpen then any given starter, that is either an indictment of the rotation or high praise for the pen.
I’ll take the under on that PCA projection.
Even with one of the worst first halves in MLB history, he still put up 2.7 WAR. And his offense seems to have settled. August was an outlier but he was still decent for a CF in September/October.
But he’d have to basically add 50% more WAR from his 2024 total to hit this projection. Statcast doesn’t look too optimistic. I don’t think he’s gonna crash, but I have a hard time seeing his offense (and overall WAR) moving from what he put up last year.
After a brutal start to the year, he had a 104 wRC+ in the second half. Even if you think that won’t sustain, his defense definitely will. He recorded 2.7 WAR in only 400 plate appearances.
Only 400 PA in 2024 with a 64 wRC+ in the first half – and a 12(!) in June. If you figure a full season in CF and buy into his offensive improvements in the second half, even a bit of regression should get him close.
He really only had one good month (August), not even a good second half. Even with his speed, I’m not sure one can put up even league average offense for long on mostly duck farts. Still, even if he can’t hit, the rest of his game probably puts him where he was last year, maybe a 3 win player.
His xwOBA improved greatly from where he started, as the season went on. Both before and after the massive spike in August, he wasn’t that far off league-average (and it was really late July to September 19th). His peak and valley were about the same distance from his median performance. I’d expect a slight uptick at minimum. I think the 92 wRC+ he put up in September/October is a fair starting point. Maybe that’s not what he did at his best, but with his defense and baserunning being in the 99th percentile, that’s plenty enough to be a very valuable player. His contact quality is about league average. His K%, Hard-Hit Rate, and Swing-and-miss rate all improved quite a bit from where he started the season, and he maintained those gains month-to-month. The final results don’t tell the whole story with him.
I feel like the offense may be a tad light, although Tucker is a huge addition to be sure. Great looking WARs all over the place but the defense is doing a lot of the heavy lifting.
After an unprecedented run of 13 straight projections from the east and west divisions, the central is finally on the board!
I do think Suzuki is a tad overrated, although he’s ran a high BABIP each season of his career. He struck out a bit too much last year for my tastes. That aside, the Cubs outfield looks very, very good.
Might still be a trade candidate, especially if he’s going to be a ticked off grouch about DHing. But he’s got a no trade clause so I don’t think he is going anywhere.
Going to take the over on Justin Steele and the under on Alcantara (both now and in the future). Alcantara has some serious hit tool questions that is going to make it tough for him to hit that well in the majors, and Steele is the king of soft contact (which shows up in his FIP too because he doesn’t give up many homers).
I’d have to think Sasaki would help them the most, right? Meaning it would push them into clear favorite territory just as much as Burnes would at haypennys of the cost and more than just about any other contender.
Yeah pushing Taillon and Assad out (or further out) of the playoff rotation would be a huge boost for them. The other places where he (or Burnes) would make a huge difference are the New York Mets and Milwaukee. The drop off as you go down the rotation in all three places is pretty steep.
The Tigers, Giants, and Rangers also fit, if we think they are contenders. And the Dodgers would get a big boost but it doesn’t look like it right now. It just will be that way because they have so many injury woes. The Orioles are like that too with Bradish and Eflin.
But any team could use Sasaki, especially at that price.
The Cubs are already scheduled to have their highest payroll ever by $11M. I can’t see them adding Burnes and going $50M+ over. The Red Sox and Orioles have to be the front runners to add Burnes. I would put the Tigers and Mets in front of the Cubs and a handful of other teams as well. Just don’t see that happening.
Their payroll last year ($228 million) was higher than their payroll right now, not sure where you’re getting that info. Also, they had $222 million in 2019 and their payroll right now is $174 million.
Doh! My bad, I was looking at Cot’s Contracts. I was thinking the ’24 payroll was for this upcoming season since it wasn’t showing an end of year number yet. Should have just stuck with the Fangraphs payroll page. In that case, forget what I said about the Cubs and you can’t count the Yankees out either.
Confused with both the Swanson & Hoerner projections given that both are roughly league average offensively, and above average but not elite defenders. Getting to a combined 9.2 WAR seems like ~3 WAR too high.
Swanson was second in all of baseball in Outs Above Average in 2023 and fourth this year, so he is definitely elite. Hoerner isn’t quite at that level, but still put up 14 OAA this year and 10 last year, so he’s excellent.
I don’t understand how they’re not elite defensively, particularly Swanson. Swanson leads all baseball in DEF over the last 3 years and Hoerner is 19th . They also combined for 9.5 WAR in 2023 and 10.9 in 2022 so this would hardly be unprecedented.
Both are absolutely elite defenders. Beyond that, Nico has averaged 4.3 fWAR the last three seasons. Dansby 5.3. It would be weird if they weren’t projected for around 9 WAR.
I generally look at UZR/150, which DRS doesn’t seem to agree for Swanson and Hoerner. Swanson has a career 1.1 UZR/150 but his 41 DRS is among the best SS over the last 8 years. Hoerner is 2.1 UZR/150 at 2b and 0.8 UZR/150 at SS, but again, his 16 DRS are not Turang or Gimenez, but in that next group.
Jack Fournier. Number one comp for Ohtani, and number three comp for Suzuki. Didn’t see that coming
I’d take a 4:1 chance on Tucker and PCA beating that 80th percentile projection. Tucker seems way low, and if ZIPS is right, that trade is awful.
I’m leaving this comment for myself for the future. I think PCA reaches superstar status this year. 25 home runs & 6WAR. He has a combination of work ethic & baseball IQ that gives him a real shot at the HOF one day.
If we’re leaving comments for posterity, I want to be on the record that PCA won’t sniff the HOF.
He would either have to make a Jose Ramirez-esque nearly unprecedented offensive improvement or become the greatest defensive centerfielder in history. And even that wasn’t enough to get Andruw in.
I think it’s more likely he gets zero HOF votes than gets in.
It’s ok for PCA to have a Mike Cameron ceiling and not be a HOFer. What are the stats, something like 1-2% of active players will be in the hall someday. Kenny Lofton isn’t in, Jeff Edmonds fell off the ballot, Andruw Jones still isn’t in. I’m
Excited for PCA too but let the kid play a full season first
Jeff Edmonds’ brother Jim didn’t fare very well either!
I’ve been surprised to see Ben Brown not projected to be more of an expected impact player for this organization (roughly citing FG Depth Charts, Zips projections, and the Cubs own actions). Someone with deeper knowledge of the team and understanding of the situation, please help me understand…..
He’s projected to split time between the rotation and the bullpen. As a pure starter, his numbers would probably be higher. But with just 77 IP predicted, he’s not given a lot of runway. I believe as a pure starter, assuming 160 IP, he’d manage about 2.5 WAR.
Happy Holidays all! Choosing to be optimistic about the 2025 Cubs. Great to go into the year with a legitimate DH (not Hosmer or Mancini and hope), a burgeoning superstar in RF on a contract year (carry his 180 OPS+ from 2024 thru a whole season at age 28?!?), and 2B and SS that should be healthy and see improvements with the bat. There’s also prospect depth for reinforcements and additions, some payroll freedom and a very motivated President Jed. Would like to see significant bullpen additions and another starter.
