2025 ZiPS Projections: Seattle Mariners
For the 21st consecutive season, the ZiPS projection system is unleashing a full set of prognostications. For more information on the ZiPS projections, please consult this year’s introduction and MLB’s glossary entry. The team order is selected by lot, and the next team up is the Seattle Mariners.
Batters
For the third time in the last four years, the Mariners hung around the playoff race for most of the 2024 campaign, before falling just short by the season’s denouement. When it comes to winning 85 to 90 games a year like clockwork, Jerry Dipoto’s ship is airtight and his sailors always on the ball. But so far, St. Louis Cardinals: Pacific Northwest hasn’t been quite as effective as the original series — the Mariners aren’t going to have as easy a time stealing division titles as the Cardinals did, playing as they do in a harder division. While the Mariners aggressively add players and make trades, there’s a basic conservatism here that limits the team’s ultimate upside; despite seven winning seasons in the last 11 years, Seattle has maxed out at just 90 wins. This isn’t a new thing either — the franchise only has one 95-win-or-better season in its history (the 116-win 2001 season, of course).
The lineup isn’t the strongest part of this team, but it’s at least solid and stable. The highlights are the J. Rodleigh Consortium (Julio Rodríguez and Cal Raleigh), two legitimate stars, though ones who have already likely found their respective peaks. Rodríguez struggled early this season, but there’s no fundamental reason to worry about him. And Raleigh has grown into a legitimate star, though I’d like to see him get a little more DH time given how important his health is to the team; he led all catchers in innings over the last two years, and it’s not like there’s a great DH situation to upset here.
Once you get past Rodríguez and Raleigh, the offense is fine, but rather underwhelming. Being decent everywhere raises your team floor quite a bit, but it also becomes very hard to meaningfully upgrade. ZiPS does see Victor Robles remaining a very solid starter in 2025, which is good news, and while second base feels a bit messy, the projections see basically all of the options as passable; this isn’t a White Sox situation from a few years ago, where they collected a bunch of 0.5-WAR second baseman with the apparent desire to Voltron them into an All-Star. ZiPS is especially sold on Cole Young’s future.
ZiPS rates Ben Williamson as one of the best minor league third basemen it’s seen in the decade it’s been able to use hit location/trajectory for minor league defense; if his bat develops and the computer isn’t hallucinating about his glove, he could become a serious keeper. Still, the bat isn’t there yet, with a .236/.309/.329 projected line, so he isn’t going to force the Mariners to give Josh Rojas the boot or prevent them from bringing in another third baseman, at least for 2025.
Again, this isn’t a bad offense, but I’d like to see some actual risk somewhere. The offseason is just getting started, so there’s plenty of time to bring in a little more danger and a little less meh.
Pitchers
The rotation is what butters the Mariners’ bread or, to stick with the nautical theme, lards their pemmican. In a very early estimate — which should not be taken too seriously yet, as it’s only mid-November — ZiPS has the Mariners with the second-best rotation in baseball behind the Phillies. In the very preliminary run of projected 2025 WAR, ZiPS puts all five of Seattle’s likely starters in the top 60 in the majors. And there’s no excessive extrapolation required either; all five have shown they can pitch convincingly well in the majors. The problem comes with the “what if.” ZiPS projects a big drop-off in ERA+ from Bryce Miller to the likely sixth starter, Emerson Hancock — a full 22 points (107 to 85), in fact. Of all the things people say in March that they later regret, “If the pitching just stays healthy, we’ll win the division!” has to be near the top. Suffer a couple serious injuries, and Seattle’s rotation — and the team — may fall apart fairly quickly.
There’s kind of a similar weird gulf when you look at the Mariners bullpen. ZiPS gives very optimistic projections for Andrés Muñoz and Gregory Santos (and Matt Brash, but he’s recovering from Tommy John surgery). But after Santos, there’s another Splash Mountain. ZiPS is a great deal less inspired by Yimi García or Trent Thornton, and it’s no sunnier about Collin Snider than Steamer is. It amounts to a solidly average bullpen — ZiPS likes this group better than Steamer does — but it’s a top-heavy one.
Crunch everything together and you get 89 to 93 wins based on our depth chart playing time. But ZiPS isn’t usually as optimistic about health as our depth charts are, so that’ll come down to 85 to 90 wins, or… somewhere around .540. There’s nothing wrong with being a .540 team over the long haul, but that doesn’t mean you have to settle for it.

Players are listed with their most recent teams wherever possible. This includes players who are unsigned or have retired, players who will miss 2025 due to injury, and players who were released in 2024. So yes, if you see Joe Schmoe, who quit baseball back in August to form a Norwegian Ukulele Dixieland Jazz band that only covers songs by The Smiths, he’s still listed here intentionally. ZiPS is assuming a league with an ERA of 4.11.
Hitters are ranked by zWAR, which is to say, WAR values as calculated by me, Dan Szymborski, whose surname is spelled with a z. WAR values might differ slightly from those that appear in the full release of ZiPS. Finally, I will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on a depth chart to produce projected team WAR.
As always, incorrect projections are either caused by misinformation, a non-pragmatic reality, or by the skillful sabotage of our friend and former editor. You can, however, still get mad at me on Twitter or on BlueSky.
Dan Szymborski is a senior writer for FanGraphs and the developer of the ZiPS projection system. He was a writer for ESPN.com from 2010-2018, a regular guest on a number of radio shows and podcasts, and a voting BBWAA member. He also maintains a terrible Twitter account at @DSzymborski.
Seems like Mariners fans are in for another typical Mariners season. Luckily there’s probably a typical Mariners offseason (meaning a lot of strange moves) to go through before we get there.
I’m skeptical about Robles’s continued solid offensive performance. So much of it seems to have been driven by a very high BABIP over the last 420 PAs. He’s probably made changes and is a better hitter than when he piled up a .296 BABIP over his prior 1600 PAs. I like Steamer’s projection of .308 and a .317 OBP. I think his 20th percentile projection is more likely than his 80th.
I’ve been saying for years that Julio reminds me of a young Bobby Tolan – nice to see that ZiPS agrees!
Let us hope Rodriguez isn’t washed up at 27 like Tolan.
It would be terrific if Raleigh saw more time at DH, but that would require a backup who can both catch and hit a bit. Unfortunately, Dipoto has painted himself into a corner. Soon-to-be 34 year old Mitch Garver is the only other C on the 40-man, he’s lousy with the glove – which is why was pegged a DH-only when they signed him – his bat looks cooked – which is why he’s unplayable at DH – and he’s owed $12.5m for 2025, so it’s unlikely he’s going anywhere. Barring a radical move, Raleigh’s likely to lead C’s in innings caught again in 2025.
Saw this happen with Will Smith last year in LA, where he was clearly exhausted and not 100% in the 2nd half, but Ohtani played 159 G because who in their right mind would bench him, and Austin Barnes had a wRC+ of 86 (DOUBLING his ’23 metric, my god), and so there was no good way to keep his bat in the lineup while giving him a day off from catching.
But that’s a preferable “problem” to have, while Seattle has punted at DH since Nelson Cruz left (and even 1B has been meh). Seattle would be such a great place for Christian Walker to land, or even Alonso (who is one of the few guys who could still hit 30 HR there).
The park doesn’t actually suppress home runs, it’s pitcher-friendly because it suppresses base hits. Hilariously, this was the result of moving the fences in and shrinking the outfield in response to the last iteration of the park, which was pitcher-friendly because righty power was destroyed by the deep leftfield and the marine layer. So they went from one type of extreme pitchers park to a completely different type of extreme pitchers park, one that I’m not sure anyone knew was even a possibility. This is the Mariners in a nutshell, true innovators on the frontier of failure, coming up with ways to fail that haven’t previously even occurred to anyone.
What? T-Mobile has had HR factors of 89 & 94 the last two years by Statcast. The park suppresses every type of batted ball, including HRs.
I hadn’t reviewed the 24 factors but the 3-year rolling is still in line with my characterization: 96 homer, 91 single, 85 double
Sure, but that three year rolling 96 includes a 108 for 2022, a real outlier over the history of the park’s HR factor. I’m inclined to give the two more recent years a bit more weight in how the park presently plays with the current iteration of the ball.
Either way, I think we agree T-Mobile is a tough place to look good with the bat.
T-Mobile Park breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.
Will Shenton have any impact at all?
no
This has to be one of the most depressing to read projections for a team that will probably win 85-90 games.
Don’t think Randy is going to have the bad start that he did this year. Shore up 2B or play super platoon there and I think the Mariners finally make it this year. Sans 54% effort.
I can’t believe you went with “lards their pemmican” over “floats their boat”
I didn’t quite get that one as a nautical metaphor. As far as I know, pemmican isn’t really associated with ships?
Come for the ZiPS wisdom, stay for the “lards the pemmican.” But you need to update that Splash Mountain reference to Tiana’s Bayou Adventure….
Big .540 energy.
Arozarena was a great addition–as was Raley, even though he probably should only platoon. But they need one more big bat to complete the team. Unfortunately they’re probably going to be getting guys like Justin Turner or Max Kepler or Jose Iglesias and not someone like Brandon Lowe.
Dipoto really needs to turn a clutch of his prospects into another plus everyday guy. Otherwise, he’ll be left hoping everything goes right again. It seldom does.
If this team had a Alex Bregman-caliber player to play the infield they would be a trendy pick to win the pennant. If they had a Pete Alonso-level player to play DH or first base on top of that they might be the favorites. But that seems unlikely…
Yeah, that’s just not how this ownership group dooze it. They’re more likely to want to get out from under the $72m they owe Castillo over the next three years than they are to sign one of the top 10 free agents at the $/yrs that would require.
For Dipoto, I’m afraid it’s trade or bust.
What they need to do is be willing to spend on a FA once in a while. They’ve shown they can develop prospects, and the top end of the system is really good rn they just need to continue working on prospect depth. One good FA hitter signing can turn this team around, they’re just too scared to spend so they’d rather take their chances on vets and rookies having breakouts.
Nice going, Dan. Who else is up for more mascot-themed ZiPS Projections?
Among Red Sox fans, there has been a lot of talk about how the Mariners match up nicely as a trade partner–the Red Sox need pitching and the Mariners need hitting. But looking at these projections, I don’t see a lot of weak spots in that lineup. Maybe 1B/DH, but I don’t think Yoshida or Casas brings back the #1/#2 starter the Sox need to add.
The problem is that they both need infielders.
The other problem is the M’s have pitching, but, not excess pitching. They have the 5 SP’s that are all really good, then it’s Hancock, who doesn’t look good & not much else.
So, if they trade an SP, they probably need to sign someone else to replace him. That can be done, of course, but, usually getting a bat on the FA market is cheaper than getting a pitcher, & we know the M’s have budget constraints.
Yeah, that’s the problem with trying to trade for a SP. There’s almost no one in the league who has more than 5 good options. Even if they do, it’s really nice to have 6 or 7.
The Red Sox actually have a very nice amount of depth at SP but are thin at the top. For a deal to work, they would probably have to send Seattle some of their depth (Crawford, Fitts, Priester, ???) in addition to a hitter. Even then, I’m not sure it’s worth it for the Mariners unless it’s a great hitter/prospect).
The Red Sox don’t really need infielders.
1B: Casas
2B: Grissom
SS: Story
3B: Devers
Grissom’s a question mark and Story is a huge injury risk. But they also have David Hamilton and Romy Gonzalez, as well as their top prospects Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell waiting in the wings.
It’s not a one-to-one match, but the Mariners are giving very “2019 Rockies” vibes. They have a great core, but a questionable supporting cast. The Rockies seemed unable to accurately self-assess their weaknesses. The Mariners seem unwilling to correct theirs.
Those projections seem pretty optimistic for the infield, no?
the pitching is soooo good. can they please sign juan soto. c’mon baseball!!
Soooo good at home (2.85 ERA, #1 in MLB this past season), not soooo much on the road (4.18, #19).
The Mariners’ ceiling is really limited by $27m in dead weight hogging two roster spots: Garver and Haniger. ZiPS’ comps for those two are hilariously brutal.
Most M’s fans don’t want to hear it but Haniger needs to be cut. He’s cooked. At least Garver can fake it as a catcher sometimes.
Maybe I just haven’t noticed with other teams, but interesting to see so many former/current Mariners as hitting comps for future/current M’s: Magadan for J.P., Eugenio for Ben Williamson, J.P. for Cole Young, Teoscar for Raley, Weeks for Polanco, Tartabull/Giles for Arroyo, Adam Frazier for Rhylan Thomas, Dylan Moore for Sundstrom. Pitching side, nada (at first blush anyway).
And by law it’s required to point out that Magadan is Lou Piniella’s nephew.
