An Announcement Regarding Hot Stove Coverage

As was the case last year, free agency begins this season a mere five days after the end of the World Series. Accordingly — and even though it might seem premature at the moment — it’s necessary that we begin our coverage of the Hot Stove League without hesitation.

Over the course of the next week-plus, we’ll be looking at this year’s free-agent market — both the available players and the teams most likely to sign them. In addition to that, we’ll continue a practice started by Dave Cameron last year (an example of which you can see here) — namely, of utilizing the Wisdom of the Crowds to get the best sense possible of what sort of contracts (in terms of years and overall cash money) the members of this season’s free-agent class are likely to receive.

Each day (more or less) we’ll have at least two posts dedicated to examining the free-agent market. The first post will serve as both a summary of the free agents at a particular position and each of those free agents’ likely future value. The second post will ask readers to vote on what they feel is the most likely arrangement of years and dollars for each free agent to receive.

We’ll start in earnest on Thursday, looking at catchers, but to make sure our polling utility is functional, I’ve included the following poll. Please take it very, very, very, very, very seriously.

You Aren't a FanGraphs Member
It looks like you aren't yet a FanGraphs Member (or aren't logged in). We aren't mad, just disappointed.
We get it. You want to read this article. But before we let you get back to it, we'd like to point out a few of the good reasons why you should become a Member.
1. Ad Free viewing! We won't bug you with this ad, or any other.
2. Unlimited articles! Non-Members only get to read 10 free articles a month. Members never get cut off.
3. Dark mode and Classic mode!
4. Custom player page dashboards! Choose the player cards you want, in the order you want them.
5. One-click data exports! Export our projections and leaderboards for your personal projects.
6. Remove the photos on the home page! (Honestly, this doesn't sound so great to us, but some people wanted it, and we like to give our Members what they want.)
7. Even more Steamer projections! We have handedness, percentile, and context neutral projections available for Members only.
8. Get FanGraphs Walk-Off, a customized year end review! Find out exactly how you used FanGraphs this year, and how that compares to other Members. Don't be a victim of FOMO.
9. A weekly mailbag column, exclusively for Members.
10. Help support FanGraphs and our entire staff! Our Members provide us with critical resources to improve the site and deliver new features!
We hope you'll consider a Membership today, for yourself or as a gift! And we realize this has been an awfully long sales pitch, so we've also removed all the other ads in this article. We didn't want to overdo it.

Over 9000 isn’t an option…

Are you sure that was the drinks and not the WAR question?

In any case I too want to see the results.

It just means I think he’ll get less than 5 WAR. Which is better than what most prospects do in their career.

40 and 4 respectively. the symmetry was irresistible. also, since carson would never, ever, ever, drink on the job, it must be blows to the head!

150 and 10 are the obvious answers.

No 150+ and 10+ options? I demand choice-plus!

It says to which number will it be closest to, so it is actually 145+

Can we vote on what you are drinking? I’m guessing grog.

True…the scales differ if you’re drinking Boone’s farm, versus Maker’s Mark, versus Night Train…that can throw off the voting results quite a bit!

Did the Wisdom of Crowds get, like, at all close to most (or even some) of the free agents in terms of dollars and years? Cause I would guess that it did not. I’m pretty intensely skeptical of applying the Wisdom of Crowds to stuff like this, anyway, but I’d be totally open to correction if this particular experiment supported the wisdom hypothesis.

Who cares? What’s more fun than pretending to know something and pretending your right? Answer: nothing. I imagine it’s for us to enjoy.

Is this replacing the wildly popular Offseason Notes series?
