FanGraphs: The Game, Football Edition

I’m pleased to introduce FanGraphs: The Game, Football Edition!!

“What?! A football game at FanGraphs?!” you say?

Yes! Given the nature of FanGraphs: The Game, it seemed like a natural fit for football, so we decided to give it a try!

FanGraphs: The Game for football is just like it is for baseball. You create a player and make picks each week to build your player’s stats over the course of the season. Whatever statistics your pick of the week accumulates are added to your player’s totals.

All of your totals will be tracked on your very own FanGraphs football player page and your player will show up on the football leaderboards, so you can see how well you’ve performed compared to others throughout the season. (These will be available later in the week after some stats have been accumulated.)

Because each player you create is assigned a position and is affiliated with a specific team, you have the chance to be atop the depth charts and hold bragging rights over your friends and others who are gunning for that same spot. You can also win awards (weekly, monthly, half-season, and full-season), and achievements.

At the end of the season, the player with the highest points total at each position will win $100, and the player with the second highest total at each position will each win a FanGraphs T-Shirt. Please see the full game rules for further details.

Click here to create a player and make your first pick. You can create as many as six players or as few as one – it’s all up to you. And, since you’re only going to be making one pick per week for each player you create, this is the fastest and easiest way to enjoy fantasy football. And best of all, it’s entirely free.

Since this is our first foray into anything football, please bear with us and let us know if you have any issues!

New Pitcher Value Stats

The Value (WAR) section for pitchers has been updated to help further break out a pitcher’s value. These stats are now available in the leaderboards and player pages.

We’ve added the following stats:

RA9-Wins – Wins above replacement calculated with RA9. This is both park adjusted and league adjusted.

BIP-Wins – Wins above average based on BABIP. This is both park and league adjusted.

LOB-Wins – Sequencing (and miscellaneous) wins above average calculated as RA9Wins – WAR – BIPWins.

FDP-Wins (Fielder Dependent Wins) – This is the full difference between RA9Wins and WAR, or BIPWins + LOBWins.

WAR – Wins Above Replacement remains unchanged.

Dave Cameron will have two posts with more details about these new stats at 9:00am and 10:00am and will be answering questions during his 12:00pm chat.

Leaderboard Filters!

You can now filter your results on the FanGraphs leaderboards!

For instance, if you’re looking at the career leaderboards and you want to know which players had a career .300/.400/.500 slash line, this is now possible.

This also works out great for comparisons. For instance, here’s a single season list of starting pitchers since 1990 who had peripherals similar to Stephen Strasburg.

The filter feature allows for lots of flexibility and even more complex filters.

For the moment we didn’t include every stat we have and just some of the more common ones, but if there are stats you feel you must be able to filter on, let us know and we’ll try and add them to the list.

Pitch Type Splits

The PITCHf/x section for pitchers now contains splits by pitch type. You can now see all the usual stats for how a batters does against a pitcher’s individual pitches.

The splits are sorted by season and then by most pitches thrown, but you can also break things down by individual pitch, if you only want to view a particular pitch type.

FanGraphs The Game: All Stars!

FanGraphs: The Game has reached the midway point of the season and it’s time to announce the very first FanGraphs: The Game All Stars! Just like in real life, every team will have a representative on the roster, except for the Marlins.

The Marlins would have chosen (as a reserve) the very deserving mgodvin (1B), but he is unable to play due to flu like symptoms. He will have no replacement.

Enjoy the break. Picks for Friday’s games will be open at the usual time on Friday morning.

I now present the full FanGraphs: The Game All Stars! Congrats to all that were chosen!

The Hardball Times Joins FanGraphs

I’m pleased to announce that The Hardball Times will be joining the FanGraphs family.

The Hardball Times has a long-standing tradition of excellent baseball writing and research, and we’re extremely happy to have them as part of our team. Dave Studeman and I plan on continuing the excellent tradition of bringing talented researchers to a broader audience.

THT will continue to operate as a separate site, keeping intact the strong THT brand. Over time we’ll make some changes and more tightly integrate the two sites as we see fit.

We’re really excited about the great work that will come out of our combined organizations.

Dave Studeman’s THT announcement can be found here.

Introducing FanGraphs Q&A

FanGraphs has had some sort of user forums since it started and generally it’s a place where people go to ask questions about either the site, fantasy baseball, or sabermetrics in general.

Today we’re launching FanGraphs Q&A, which will hopefully allow for better discussion and allow for good answers to questions to be found much more easily than in the past.

To kick things off, we’re moving our RotoGraphs fantasy mailbag to FanGraphs Q&A where our RotoGraphs team will continue to answer questions and the rest of the FanGraphs community will also be able to chime in and help too.
