Job Posting: Driveline Baseball R&D Intern

Position: Research and Development Intern

Location: Kent, WA
Employment Details:

  • Seasonal, $2500/month.
  • No additional benefits.
  • Start Date: As early as November 1st, 2018 – no later than December 1st, 2018
  • End Date: April 1st, 2019, but exceptional applicants may be offered an extension through the summer
  • Candidates will be expected to work ~40 hours per week.
  • This is NOT a remote position. It is located in Kent, WA. No financial relocation assistance is offered, though Driveline will put you in contact with a number of affordable short-term housing options upon accepting the role, if offered.

Description:
You will spend your time on the floor checking in with athletes, monitoring their movements, answering questions and integrating with the skill-specific and High Performance teams to collect and analyze athlete data.

You’ll work on projects like:

  • Preparing athletes for biomechanical assessments via retroreflective marker placement.
  • Running assessment reports in our internal tools software and in industry-standard software like Visual3d, Motive:Body, and OpenSIM.
  • Collecting and cleaning data for existing and new research projects.
  • Filming athletes using our Edgertronic high-speed cameras, editing the videos, and organizing them for easy access by the coaches, athletes, and research team.
  • Writing blog posts and creating social media content to document findings.
  • Going through your own independent research project of your choice, from study design, to IRB approval, to data collection and analysis, and finally, publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

R&D interns at Driveline Baseball spend their entire week working on internal projects that push the limits of knowledge in the baseball training space. You will be given unparalleled access to technology that few labs in the world have access to, and you will be tasked with an independent project that will eventually be published in a peer-reviewed journal with your name attached and proper credit given (all publication fees are paid for by Driveline Baseball).

You will be given a laptop and standing desk to work at inside the research lab, on the floor, and with our athletes. This isn’t a front office “hidden” position where you crank out data and no one is counting on you – you will be interfacing daily with professional athletes.

This is an opportunity to advance your career and knowledge base while being paid.

A Great Candidate Demonstrates:

  • Quantitative skill and experience in major statistical packages, like R-Studio.
  • Previous experience with some form of biomechanical analysis software package.
  • Open source project work on GitHub or openly published preprints/blogs to review. Driveline wants to know that you have contributed in some way on your own – this internship is very self-driven and is not micromanaged. Driveline needs independent thinkers, workers, and doers who take initiative.

The R&D Developer Trainee position emphasizes software and web development as it relates to the Baseball Operations department. The trainee’s main responsibilities will be to assist the R&D department with building proprietary applications for displaying baseball information and visualizations, maintaining existing information management systems, and developing additional productivity tools to aid in Baseball Operations decision making. Position: Atlanta Braves R&D Analyst Trainee

The R&D Analyst Trainee will assist Baseball Operations decision-making through the analysis and research of baseball information. Position: Major League Operations Analyst

Location: Atlanta, GA

Description:
Support the Major League Operations group through the creation of tools for displaying and disseminating data, statistics, and other baseball-related information. The ideal candidate has a strong technical background and can work independently on self-contained projects, as well as an understanding of baseball research concepts and modern gameplay strategies. This position will report to the Director of Major League Operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop tools and visualizations for disseminating statistical concepts.
  • Conduct research projects for the Major League Operations group.
  • Help build database and reporting infrastructure to support Major League advance report and coaching staff needs.
  • Summarize project results in succinct, actionable format and present findings to the group.
  • Work on Major League advance scouting process.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated track record as self-starter through independently-produced projects and/or writing (via online publication, etc.).
  • Strong foundation in the application of statistical concepts to baseball data and the translation of data into actionable baseball recommendations.

Job Posting: Phillies Baseball Research and Development

Position: Quantitative Analyst (full-time and summer), Baseball Research & Development

Description:
As a Quantitative Analyst (QA) or QA intern, you help shape the Phillies Baseball Operations strategies by processing, analyzing, and interpreting large and complex data. You do more than just crunch the numbers; you carefully plan the design of your own studies by asking and answering the right questions, while also working collaboratively with other analysts and software engineers on larger projects.

Using analytical rigor, you work with your team as you mine through data and see opportunities for the Phillies to improve. After communicating the results of your studies and experiments to the GM and executive staff, you collaborate with front office executives, scouts, coaches, and trainers to incorporate your findings into Phillies practices. Identifying the challenge is only half the job; you also work to figure out and implement the solution.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct statistical research projects and manage the integration of their outputs into our proprietary tools and applications (e.g., performance projections, player valuations, draft assessments, injury analyses, etc.)
  • Communicate with front office executives, scouts, coaches, and medical staff to design and interpret statistical studies
  • Assist the rest of the QA team with their projects by providing guidance and feedback on your areas of expertise within baseball, statistics, data visualization, and programming
  • Continually enhance your knowledge of baseball and data science through reading, research, and discussion with your teammates and the rest of the front office

Required Qualifications:

Position: Software Engineer (full-time and summer), Baseball Research & Development

The work of a Software Engineer (SWE) or SWE intern at the Phillies extends well beyond merely coding. As a SWE you contribute fresh ideas in a variety of areas, including information retrieval, networking and data storage, security, machine learning, natural language processing, UI design and mobile to shape the evolution of the Phillies baseball analytics systems.

Our ideal engineers will have a versatile skill set, be enthusiastic to handle new challenges and demonstrate leadership qualities. You will work closely with end-users across Scouting, Player Development and the Major League Coaching Staff while building software tools from the ground up. By identifying appropriate design specifications through collaboration with those end-users, you will build applications that conform to user needs.

Specific areas of focus may include, but are not limited to, the draft, free-agency, player valuation, player development, in-game strategy, and injury prevention. As a SWE you will have the opportunity to use your technical expertise to create software solutions that impact decision-making at the Phillies.

Responsibilities:

  • Improve existing platforms and design new proprietary applications to be used directly by the GM and executive staff
  • Collaborate with front office executives, scouts, coaches, and medical staff regarding the design and technical specifications of software solutions for Baseball Operations

Position: Minor League Baseball Information Intern

Location: Lakeland, Florida

Job Description:
This position is designed to assist with day-to-day department activities, projects, presentations and overall organization.

Summary:

The Milwaukee Brewers are currently seeking a full-time Developer for Baseball Systems. This individual will collaborate with the Baseball Research & Development team and will assist in the expansion and maintenance of an aggregated player information and reporting system.
