Responsibilities:

• Assist in development tasks and data operations.

Two seasons ago, I ranked the job security of each general manager and listed GM prospects. I think I did a pretty good job with both lists given what we knew at the time, and may do it again as Opening Day 2016 closes in. We’ve had less executive movement in the last few off-seasons than usual and it looks like the regression is happening this year, with four GM jobs currently open and a likely fifth coming soon. This seemed like a good time to cover each of the situations in flux and target some possible changes in the near future, along with some names to keep in mind as candidates to fill these openings.

The Open GM Spots
We have two teams without a top baseball decision-making executive, in Seattle and Milwaukee:

Mariners
The Mariners moved on from (now former) GM Jack Zduriencik recently, a long-rumored move that club president Kevin Mather admitted he waited too long to execute. Mather has said they’re looking for a replacement sooner than later (likely eliminating execs from playoff teams), with GM experience (eliminating most of the GM prospects you’ll see below), and that the team doesn’t require a rebuild (meaning a shorter leash and higher expectations from day one). This should prove to narrow the pool of candidates a good bit, but this is still seen as the best of the currently open jobs.

Position: Inside Edge Baseball Operations Pitch Charter/Scout

Locations: Minneapolis, Minn. or Bristol, Conn.

Description:
Inside Edge, a leading scouting service and provider of data and analytics to MLB clubs and media, is looking for ambitious individuals to work in our baseball operations department during the 2015 baseball season. Former pro players and/or high-level college players preferred. Many of our employees move on to jobs with MLB organizations. Training for this position begins in February. The position will last until at least the end of the MLB regular season (October 4), with a possibility of extending through the offseason.

Responsibilities:

• Diligently chart pitches and play-by-play information for MLB games using IE’s proprietary charting application.
• Check the accuracy and validity of data.
• Provide support to team leaders.

Position: TrackMan/Perfect Game Data & Operations Intern

Locations: Goodyear, Ariz., Jupiter, Fla., LakePoint Sports Complex (Emerson, Ga.)

Description:
Be our hands and eyes on the ground. By this we mean the D&O Intern will be out in the field on almost a daily basis focused primarily on operating the TrackMan system and ensuring data quality measures are effectively in place at the point of capture. As part of the unique partnership between Perfect Game and TrackMan, you will be an integral piece of ensuring the added TrackMan value to players, coaches, college teams, and Major League teams.

At TrackMan Baseball we measure stuff – the speed, spin and movement of pitched and hit baseballs.

We do this using proprietary 3D Doppler radar hardware and software. The majority of Major League teams use our products and services for player development and evaluation. We also work with collegiate, Japanese and Korean teams, premier amateur baseball organizations, broadcasters and equipment manufacturers.

Our business is growing fast. By the start of next season we will have a network of radars installed in more than 100 stadiums on three continents, and dozens of remote systems traveling the US.

Responsibilities:

• Becoming an in-house expert for Perfect Game in the TrackMan Baseball system.
• Setup and maintenance of the TrackMan system per the defined requirements.
• Operate the TrackMan system and ensure all data is being captured effectively and accurately.
• Support the TrackMan and Perfect Game data operations teams in ad-hoc data requests and evaluations.
• Support the Perfect Game event staff in any additional areas to ensure successful event activation.

Preferred/Required Skills:

• Current college student or recent graduate with education focused on Sports Management, Statistics / Mathematics, Operations Management, or similar
• Ideally an individual who is a self-starter with an entrepreneurial attitude who can work individually while also supporting a larger team
• An ability to work through ambiguity and adaptable while working in fast-paced environment
• Strong computer skills (regular use of the TrackMan application)
• Strong knowledge of baseball rules
• Experience in Customer Relationship Management
• Experience in Project Management a plus
• Basic database and/or analytics experience a plus
• Ability to lift upwards of 50 lbs.

Position: TrackMan Analytics/Operations Intern

Location: Stamford, Conn.

Description:
Join TrackMan’s team as an Analytics/Operations Intern for TrackMan Baseball, a US based sports technology firm. You will take on a critical role in a small, fast moving entrepreneurial company that is breaking new ground in sports.

In this position, you will primarily be responsible for reviewing TrackMan data from a significant number of MLB, Minor League baseball and NCAA stadiums during the 2015 baseball season. You will also have the opportunity to perform statistical analysis as directed.

The internship starts in mid-February and wraps up at the conclusion of the Major League baseball season. Candidates with only summer availability will also be considered for a shorter term internship.

This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to break into the baseball community and get experience with data available exclusively to professional baseball teams.  Full training is provided and you’ll have the opportunity to work closely with all members of the TrackMan staff and interface with our partner teams.  Weekend and evening availability is important.

Requirements:

• Excellent knowledge of baseball
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work well with others

Desired Skills and Experience:

• Bachelors or Masters degree in Statistics, Mathematics or a related field.

• Python or other scripting language experience is a plus.
