Contract Crowdsourcing: First Baseman

Since Major League Baseball made the step of beginning free agency just five days after the World Series ends – a terrific move to get the off-season going earlier, by the way – and the Giants are threatening to end the postseason sooner than later, I figure that we have some catching up to do on contract crowdsourcing. So, instead of doing them one by one, we’re going to start categorizing them by position, save for a few of the more interesting players we haven’t covered yet – Cliff Lee will get his own post, for instance.

Today, first baseman. We’ve already covered Adam Dunn (who was projected for 3/36), but there are quite a few alternatives for teams who want to go another direction. The forms are after the jump, and we’ll cover the results later today.

I figure this has already been said before, but these polls aren’t really “crowdsourcing” at all…

hmmm, Fangraphs disagrees. Maybe they should crowdsource a judgement with another poll.

I put down Aubrey Huff at 2 years, 14 million. I don’t think there’s any way he walks away from the Giants this year. He might have a lot of suitors, though, because he’s become sort of a more versatile Mark Derosa this year. He’s played solid defense at 3 positions.

Huff will get more than that from Sabean, try to think like you want to pay double what others are willing to

I agree that huff does whatever it takes to remain a Giant, and i expect it to be for 2 more yrs @ ~9mil per.
He was one of the giants 2 most valuable players over the course of the season and by all accounts was also a tremendous positive influence in the clubhouse. I expect both sides will want to make it work

This should really have an option for option years too. A 1 with 1 option makes sense, similar to Beltre’s contract or with a team option instead. Instead you have to choose between between 1 and 2 and often end up with just 1.
