Howard Maybe Doesn’t Not Not Suffer Setback
Three or so days ago, manager Charlie Manuel told reporters that first baseman Ryan Howard had suffered a setback in his recovery from Achilles surgery. The day after that, the club clarified Manuel’s statement, noting that Howard had a condition known as seroma — a pocket of clear fluid that sometimes develops in an area after surgery, and which is relatively common following the sort of procedure Howard had undergone. Now, this morning, Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Howard underwent a “small procedure” Monday to remove stitches from Howard’s wound. Howard must allow the new wound to heal before resuming rehab, is the point, and is sidelined indefinitely — which, if you don’t know, now you know.
Update on Sizemore Injury Expected Today
It was revealed on Friday, according to MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian, that Cleveland Indians maybe center fielder Grady Sizemore suffered a lower back injury roughly three weeks ago during outfield drills at Cleveland’s complex. According to manager Manny Acta, an update on said injury is due today.
Giants Sanchez Now Dealing with Back Spasms
San Francisco Giants second baseman Freddy Sanchez, who saw his 2011 season end in June due to a shoulder injury, is now dealing with back spasms, reports Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle. Per Schulman, manager Bruce Bochy still hopes to have Sanchez play by the second week of Cactus League games, at least as a designated hitter. This author’s advice to the Giants? Do Joe Panik!
Actual Game Result: Philadelphia vs. FSU
There was an actual baseball game on Wednesday involving at least one actual major-league baseball team. The Phillies played Florida State University, winning 6-1 (box).

• After introducing himself, relatively anonymous Philly catcher Gosewisch added, “I hope I’m pronouncing that right.”*
• Here are some numbers from FSU center fielder James Ramsey’s stat line on the young college season: 7-7 GP-GS, 19 AB, 11 H, 3 HR, 13 BB, 2 HBP, 2 K.

I know you said it just to make a pun, but 20-year-old Joe Panik is not ready for the big-time. The platoon of Fontenot/Theriot is pretty awful, but not that much worse than old, injured Freddy.
My feelings about Panik are not entirely rational, I admit. It’s worth noting, however, that both the OLIVER and Steamer projection systems see him as an almost league-average bat, effective immediately.
For some reason, Felipe Alou thinks Panik can be productive with the big club this season. I think that’s a bit optimistic, but what do I know?
I get the Phillies are not being entirely forthcoming about Howard but are you actually rooting for Howard to be injured for an extended period?
No, I hope Ryan Howard heals well. Entirely.
I’ve just been following the story for a few days now, and there seems to be a revelation each day that contradicts the revelation from the day before. Perhaps that’s just the nature of reportage on a star player with a sort of nebulous health status in a market that cares as much as Philadelphia.
But regarding Howard himself, I hope he gets very better, sure.
Juan Pierre at DH? Are you sure that a certian marlins manager wasn’t filling out the lineup card?

Re: Ryan Howard. I’ve had similar stitches for major surgery. They are designed to dissolve into the tissue as the incision heals. They are great if you don’t move around and such but with an ankle and with Howard doing some light rehab work, its not unusual to see the stitches becoming a problem. Fluid leakage is also common if the stitches don’t hold up.
I doubt that we should be too concerned regarding Howard at this point.
Unless, of course, we do need to be too concerned. Which the various reports have told us that we do not need to not not do… yet… I think.
Ha! Juan Pierre went 0-2 with 1K in an game against a college team! Well, that made my day.
Wish Florida State at least didn’t have so many subs. Why not go all out and try to win, it would be good publicity! Esp with the game tied after 5 innings. It would be neat to see a college team beat the Phillies (moreso than Manatee CC beating the pirates a couple years back) even if the Philly was in spring training mode.
