An Especial Puerto Rican Box Score
The reader, because he’s In the Know, is surely aware that Thursday represented the start of the Puerto Rican League. Of particular note, however, was a game between Gigantes de Carolina and Indios de Mayaguez that featured a number of players who are worth monitoring for various reasons — reasons which are (mostly) articulated below.

1. Carlos Correa, a shortstop from Puerto Rico in the Houston system, was the first overall pick in the 2012 draft — and, not for nothing, is considered one of the great young talents in the game.

2. This Micah Owings playing left field for Gigantes is the selfsame Micah Owings who (a) has pitched 483.0 innings in the majors and (b) established himself as one of the league’s best-hitting pitchers while so doing. Fact that’s mostly fun: Owings has actually posted a higher WAR as a batter (2.4) than as a pitcher (2.2).

3. Angel Sanchez is not an elite prospect — or a prospect at all, in fact. What he is, though, is a player who (a) posted a 40:25 walk-to-strikeout ratio this past season in 344 Triple-A plate appearances and (b) can handle shortstop. He’s probably less talented than, but has a similar skill set to, Maicer Izturis, whose place he might very well be taking after having signed a minor-league deal with the Angels.

4. Giant person Kennys Vargas, 22, is an under-heralded first-base prospect in the Minnesota system who posted one of the highest regressed home-run rates in all of Class A.

5. Eddie Rosario is another Twins prospect — and played second base alongside Vargas this past season at Beloit in the Midwest League. The now 21-year-old was ranked second among all Twins prospects by Marc Hulet before the 2012 season, and did little to diminish his prospect status by posting a 129 wRC+ in 429 plate appearances.

6. Cleveland prospect Roberto Perez is known chiefly for his catch-and-throw skills, but has also demonstrated considerably better-than-average plate discipline throughout his minor-league career — leading, for example, to walk and strikeout rates of 14.0% and 19.2%, respectively, at Double-A Akron this past season. While his batting averages have been consistently low (.234 in 1398 minor-league PAs), the offensive bar is also rather low for a catcher with plus defense.
