World Baseball Classic, Maximum Update
With their 3-1 victory over Japan on Sunday night, Puerto Rico has advanced to the World Baseball Classic final. On Monday, the competition’s other semifinal game — between the Dominican Republic and Netherlands — takes place at 9pm ET.

What follows is a record of the 2013 World Baseball Classic to date — with, like, two or three prose flourishes by the author, or one prose flourish by the author.

Here is a slightly absurd, but not entirely usesless, leaderboard of the top-10 hitting performances of the World Baseball Classic so far. SCOUT+ an offensive measure (about which you can read more here) calculated with regressed home-run, walk, and strikeout rates, where 100 is average and above 100 is above average.

And here are the top-10 pitching performances thus far — in this case by SCOUT-, a metric calculated with regressed strikeout and walk rates where 100 is average and below 100 is above average.

Notable Performance: Samuel Deduno, Unexpectedly
By the questionable method employed above, Dominican Republic and Minnesota Twins right-hander Samuel Deduno has recorded the third-most impressive performance thus far of the 2013 World Baseball Classic, informed most strongly by his start against Team USA this past Thursday, during which he posted the following line (box): 4.0 IP, 19 TBF, 7 K, 2 BB, 0 HR, 5 H. In his first start, against Spain, Deduno posted a 5:0 strikeout-to-walk ratio, also in 4.0 innings (box).

Below is footage from Deduno’s start against the United States. It appears as though Deduno’s curveball was particularly effective. He records strikeouts with the pitch at the following minute marks: 0:07, 0:10, 0:14, 0:18, 0:28, and 0:32.
