Daily Updated Steamer Projections!

Daily updated Steamer Projections are now available in the player pages and the projections pages. These come in both the Rest of Season (RoS) and Updated variety. RoS is the projection for only the remainder of the season, while Updated is the forecast for the player’s final season line, including his performance to date.

One thing to note about the daily updated Steamer projections is that a full new projection for each player is calculated each day of the season, the same way the pre-season calculations are calculated, just including this year’s data.

Much thanks goes out to Jared Cross, Dash Davidson, and Peter Rosenbloom for putting these together.

Jose Fernandez has already started more games and exceeded his year-long IP total….

Does anyone know if Steamer does daily projections (i.e. not daily updates to their yearly projections but actual projections for that day’s performance)?

Not yet! This would be fun though.

Oh…I didn’t know your name was a link! I assume you only do this for Dodgers, right?

The “like this” text in my post is a link, done for the Angels. I do it for all games, but only post for my two local teams. Since I have a day job, I usually run these the night before so there is some guess work as to what the actual lineup will be the next day. So what I do is input Zips, Steamer or any other projection system’s data into the hitter and pitcher projections (I use FSR for defense), build the lineup for each team and then run the game 100K times. The output will be a complete box score for hitters and pitchers along with a scoring distribution matrix that shows how many times each final score occurs. And of course it also outputs a win expectancy and total runs scored indicator. But I think the box score is what you are looking for. There is a lot more stuff I could do with the stat outputs if I only did this for a living. 🙂

That Reyes projection should probably be updated

Right now these are (adjusted) Fan projected playing time, scaled down based on how many games each team has remaining. So, they aren’t adjusted based on changing depth charts.

Thanks for adding these projections. Hopefully you can integrate them with some reliable in-season playing time projections (maybe fanball?).

Sorry — I meant to razzball, not fanball.

This is great.

Less great: there’s currently no way to separate SPs and RPs in any projections. Also, you can probably give up the ghost on 2013 Marcel.

Does anyone know how these are calculated? As in, is there different weighting for different factors, or is it done just like the ZiPS RoS stuff?

There’s different weighting for different factors. The entirety of the Steamer algorithm is run each night.

This is great news! Are the daily updates available for bulk download anywhere, or are they only available one-by-one on Fangraphs?

When I go to the Projections tab on a player tab the Steamer projections are not the same as Steamer (U) on the opening player page. Any idea what’s up? Mainly, I’d like to see an updated auction value.

The projections tab shows the pre-season projections which explains why they’re different but, I realize, doesn’t help you with the auction value.

Obviously, preseason stats are now useless. Any way FG can get that changed?

David, yes, I understand that I can use Steamer (U), but Steamer (U) doesn’t have auction values associated with it which comes in VERY handy when evaluating trades (Ask Eno he mentioned how great these are for trade analysis in his last chat).

Anyway you could include the auction values based on Steamer (R) (and ZIPS (R) for that matter)somewhere? That would be great! Thanks.

use them on lastplayerpicked.zxq.net

Make sure to use the settings from your league.

Good idea Skin, but it seems like a lot of work to go through to look at a trade. It seems like adding another column with updated auction values would be easy and EXTREMELY useful.
