Dan Szymborski FanGraphs Chat – 11/25/13

11:58
Dan Szymborski: We…are…live…

11:59
Dan Szymborski: Can’t…type…words…any…faster…than…this.

11:59
Dan Szymborski: Must…run…whole…chat…this…way…or…maybe…not

11:59
Comment From Steve
Why didn’t the Angels just go after Peralta??? Seems stupid when they had to trade Bourjos for Freese

11:59
Dan Szymborski: When you can get a worse player for your main trading chip and one of your top prospects, YA GOTTA DO IT

12:00
Comment From GSon
most under rated signing of this hot stove so far.. David Murphy?

12:00
Dan Szymborski: Possibly Johnson since the Padres got a terrific option out of him.

12:01
Comment From Guest
Hello Dan. Over or under, Michael Cuddyer is a 2 WAR player this year.

12:01
Dan Szymborski: I’d take over but slightly

12:01
Comment From Steve
Feels like Tony Reagins is back

12:01
Dan Szymborski: The boys are back in town.

12:01
Comment From Kevb
Let’s talk about Dan Haren for this entire chat

12:01
Dan Szymborski: I think we’d run out of material fairly quickly.

12:01
Comment From Dan
Those mookie Betts comps seemed light. What were his MLEs? Did he have any big names further down? Can you further tease us with his WAR? Cmon, he’s Mookie!

12:03
Dan Szymborski: Don’t have the MLE on this laptop. And you have to remember that a 2014 projection is a *2014* projection. Going from half-a-season at high-A to Fenway is an incredibly large jump

12:04
Comment From John
The David Wright contract looks like a pretty big bargain, right? Probably gets 150-200 in FA?

12:04
Dan Szymborski: It’s looking solid. Don’t think he’d get to 200 in FA.

12:04
Comment From Guest
Did the Cardinals end their streak of ultra-intelligent moves by signing Peralta? He seems like a guy who could get complacent over 4 years, especially coming of the PEDs and not wanting to get suspended for the money

12:05
Dan Szymborski: Well, for one, he wasn’t suspended for 2013 PED use, the Biogenesis suspensions were for previous use. We’ve already seen him for a season after his PED use and he’s been tested multiple times.

12:05
Dan Szymborski: (known PED use)

12:05
Dan Szymborski: And that evidence for it being meaningful big picture is pretty small.

12:06
Dan Szymborski: It’s not an *amazing* deal, but it’s what Peralta’s talents are worth in the market. ZiPS was off by a million or two for total contract, IIRC

12:06
Comment From Guest
Cardinals needs after the two recent moves? Anyone not totally convinced Wong can play at this level?

12:06
Dan Szymborski: Wong will be fine.

12:07
Comment From Guest
Thoughts on Gregory Polanco and Jameson Taillon in the majors this coming season?

12:07
Dan Szymborski: We’ll see them both this coming year. Both will start in the minors though, I expect Polanco to force his way up first

12:07
Comment From Nats Fan
Lots of interesting stuff so far in the stove, but i got a feeling the nats and rizzo will make a big gio gonzalez type trade, who are possible candidates?

12:08
Dan Szymborski: Honestly, I don’t think that they trade Gonzalez. If they wanted to, there’s no limit on teams that could be involved

12:08
Comment From Mr. Gausman
what in the hell are the Orioles doing this winter?

12:09
Dan Szymborski: I’m still hopeful, but I have a sinking feeling that they’re not going to do much.

12:10
Dan Szymborski: And I was a little ill at the whispers that the Orioles were interested to sign Peralta to play leftfield, which is just a horrific idea to have.

12:11
Dan Szymborski: If you don’t believe he can play SS/3B or won’t play him at SS/3B, there’s no reason to sign Peralta for anywhere near what the Cards gave him

12:11
Dan Szymborski: You don’t spend 20K on a car if your intention is to store cake in it.

12:11
Comment From semperty
Over/under Bourjos’ wRC+ at 100?

12:11
Dan Szymborski: That’s about where I have him, so tough to say.

12:11
Comment From RotoLando
Could you keep up an entire chat typing like Shatner?

12:12
Dan Szymborski: I…could…BUT I…would LOSE..fans………and………..READers….q u i c k l y

12:12
Comment From John
When you do your FA evaluation, what do you do with inflation? If you do inflation yearly, does that mean that a player who puts up 1, 2, 3, 4 WAR is more valuable than a guy who goes 4, 3, 2, 1?

12:14
Dan Szymborski: ZiPS uses CBO-projected CPI plus 2.8%

12:15
Dan Szymborski: It would change the number slightly, but not enough to really care about

12:16
Dan Szymborski: Doing the math in my head probably not a good idea, but it would be 56 mil vs. 58 mil, which is a who cares type of thing.

12:16
Comment From RotoLando
Settle the Freese-Bourjos trade once and for all.

12:16
Dan Szymborski: Terrible move by Angels.

12:17
Dan Szymborski: Bourjos straight-up for Freese already a loss for the Angels, expanding it to include Grichuk and get Salas makes it even worse

12:17
Comment From Teddy
Does Ian Desmond project to be a 5 WAR SS or to you expect some regression?

12:17
Dan Szymborski: I expect some regression, though he’ll be good.

12:17
Comment From Bret
What is Jeff Samardzija? A number 3 starter? And what’s that worth in a trade?

12:18
Dan Szymborski: #3 fair, though he occasionally shows flashes of a breakout

12:18
Comment From Petes Dragon
assuming the O’s can’t/won’t sign wieters to an extension, when do they deal him and what can they get?

12:18
Dan Szymborski: I dont’ think they do. I think they end up letting him walk and take the pick.

12:18
Comment From Jtt
I’m having issues making sense of the indians roster. Gomes santana and swisher to rotate c/1b/dh and Murphy/Stubbs swisher for rf? Murphy/Stubbs seems like an unesessicarily expensive platoon

12:19
Dan Szymborski: You have to factor injuries in there – someone will get injured and make these roles bigger.

12:19
Comment From Zach (not Sanders)
How can I get in touch with Zach Sanders or one of the other Rotographs guys other than via Twitter? I want to know why they keep giving player valuations based on league setups other than those on Fangraphs own site! It makes no sense. We want valuations based on $400 of cap room and 4×4, 5×5, or points. Maybe I’m just crazy.

12:20
Dan Szymborski: Uhh…email?

12:20
Dan Szymborski: I find it easiest just to get people on twitter

12:20
Dan Szymborski: Including my friends, which leads to people seeing some odd conversations

12:21
Dan Szymborski: So now people know stories like my friend Alan having a freakout over someone stealing his Milano cookies or me playing GI Joes as a kid involving each Joe having hit points and damage determined by a 20-sided die.

12:21
Comment From Mark
Cards question was mine…

12:21
Dan Szymborski: TO the victor go the spoils.

12:21
Comment From Mark
If you were to sign one character from the Final Fantasy Series, who would it be, and what position would you play them at.

12:22
Dan Szymborski: I think Barret from FFVII would be a good 1B/DH type.

12:23
Comment From GSon
The Indians have announced that the Yanimal (Yan Gomes) will be the primary catcher for the 2014 season. Does this make Carlos Santana tradeable to, saaaaaaaaaaay.. the Red Sox for Owens/Barnes plus?

12:23
Dan Szymborski: It would be doable and not a bad idea now that you bring it up.

12:23
Comment From Mr. Wrestling IV
Dan, I wanted to egg your house this weekend, byt Szymborski wasn’t in the Baltimore phone book. Where exactly do you live?

12:23
Dan Szymborski: Ohio!

12:23
Dan Szymborski: (Family reasons)

12:23
Dan Szymborski: Do phone books have addresses now?

12:24
Comment From Zach (not Sanders)
And yes, I know I can do my own based on Sanders’s published method but I don’t want to.

12:24
Dan Szymborski: But if you have your own and the other people in your league don’t, you have an advantage over them

12:24
Comment From John
Who is the third best outfielder on the Mets (Assuming Youg & Lagares are 1/2). Might it be Cesar Puello?

12:25
Dan Szymborski: I assume we’re talking defensively? Puello is quite solid.

12:25
Comment From Dan
I know, but seemed from the Phils list, for instance, that Altherr did quite well, unless it’s just that the Phils are that barren.

12:25
Dan Szymborski: I think you answered your own question!

12:25
Comment From Matt Wieters Dad
No way you’re getting a 9 figure contract … at least I hope the orioles don’t hand him one. as an orioles fan, what say you?

12:26
Dan Szymborski: Yeah, he’s not worth a 9 figure contract. He turned out to be a different type of player than we expected on draft day.

12:26
Comment From Steve
Is it at all likely for Trout to be better than last year?

12:26
Dan Szymborski: Likely? Not really. Guys playing that well, most of the risk is one sided

12:26
Comment From Mark
If Dan Haren is so good to be worth $10 million to the Dodgers, how come other teams didn’t pick up on him sooner (re: Jason Collette’s piece)

12:26
Dan Szymborski: You can say that about every bargain ever.

12:27
Comment From Zach (not Sanders)
MLE = maximum liklihood estimator?

12:27
Dan Szymborski: minor league equivalency. though logically, major league equivalency makes mor esense, from a word standpoint

12:28
Comment From Shark Mapiro
What teams could you foresee signing Cano if the Yankees refuse to pay him and sign someone else?

12:28
Dan Szymborski: I can still see him ending up with the Dodgers, even with no specific link yet

12:31
Dan Szymborski: The rumbling I’ve been hearing “backstage” in addition to the various reports, suggest that Jay-Z’s attempts to sell teams on Cano have been very amateur

12:31
Comment From Colin
Wait. Am I reading this right? Aaron Sanchez would be part of a Jeff Samardzija deal? Would AZ be dumb enough to give up Archie Bradley then? Please let his be true.

12:31
Dan Szymborski: I doubt he’s give up Bradley, but who knows.

12:32
Dan Szymborski: Wow, that’s a poory written sentence.

12:32
Dan Szymborski: poorly

12:32
Comment From DJ
It seems the angels org has had more misses than hits the past few years. Pujols and Hamilton are back breakers and i don’t think CJ wilson has earned his money. This latest move of signing Joe Smith to a 3 yr deal feels like a poor use of resources. How do you access the Angels decision makers?

12:32
Dan Szymborski: I do I access them? Email, though I don’t know DiPoto personally

12:33
Dan Szymborski: I don’t *hate* the Joe Smith signing. Yeah, he’s overpaid, but at least they’re not trading a significant trade chip and a top prospect for a pretend-good player here.

12:33
Comment From Johnny
Do you think Samardzija would be a good fit in Toronto?

12:34
Dan Szymborski: Decent. They need to choose between doubling-down and folding.

12:34
Comment From John
Better defensive shortstop: A-Rod or Jeter?

12:34
Dan Szymborski: I think a very large rubberized garbage can better than either

12:34
Comment From Shawn
The Braves want front of the rotation help, but I do not think we have the prospects to beat others for Price. While they are good, I dont really consider lackey, peavy, or the shark as true “front of the rotation” talents. Any darkhorse trade options out there the Braves might go after?

12:36
Dan Szymborski: Couple options if the Blue Jays end up throwing in the towel. Any front of the rotation talent is going to involve beating others for that front rotation talent

12:36
Dan Szymborski: If the Reds wanted to trade Mat Latos, they’re not going to hold a secret auction at midnight and only invite the Braves.

12:36
Comment From Patrick
Where does giolito end at the end of this year, level wise, and prospect wise?

12:38
Dan Szymborski: He’s thrown what, 50 professional innings so far! Asking alot man. There’s no specific reason outside of elbow injury to discount him yet. If he stays healthy and pitches well, the Nats will promote him aggressively

12:38
Comment From juan pierres mustache
A fun fact about Dan Haren is that it’s really hard to find fun facts about Dan Haren.

12:39
Comment From SK
Most underrated GM in baseball?

12:39
Dan Szymborski: Hmm, not sure if there are any. Most good GMs get credit generally for being good.

12:39
Comment From San Dzymborski
How do you feel about Xander next year?

12:39
Dan Szymborski: Solid

12:39
Comment From SMC
Will Cano price himself out of this market? If Peralta gets $53 MM, Cano will (still) want 4 times that. But who will give it to him?

12:40
Dan Szymborski: I still think that he ends up back with the Yankees, they needed to *add* talent, not just tread water

12:40
Comment From zack
Is Matt Holliday’s contract one of the better big long term free agent signings ever?

12:41
Dan Szymborski: It’s turned out very well, one of the better ones

12:41
Comment From APODionysus
What was up with Giants offense? 100 runs less than 2012, dropping from 12th to 21st. Virtually same BB%, BABIP, K% ISO, wRC+. Not sequencing, actually had higher wOBA/wRC+ with RISP in 2013.

12:42
Dan Szymborski: That’s kind of a hard question to answer in 45 seconds in a chat!

12:42
Comment From BryanH
Any tweaks this year to the injury system in ZiPS? Wondering how it handles Luebke who hasn’t throw a baseball in a really long time.

12:42
Dan Szymborski: Haven’t made any tweaks in that department

12:43
Comment From GSon
If the Indians don’t get an attentive ear to listen to a contract extension for Justin Masterson, do they call the Nats and Rizzo and talk about Giolito / Rendon / Others?

12:43
Dan Szymborski: Call everbody! That’s their job.

12:44
Comment From Rockies Fan
Is Jonathan Gray and/or Eddie Butler going to get a projection this year? And how good of one do you think they will get.

12:44
Dan Szymborski: Butler might, Gray probably not. Not great projections, jumping to Coors from low minors is a big leap

12:44
Comment From SK
Best move Anthopolous could make to improve the Blue Jays?

12:45
Dan Szymborski: Well, as long as we’re talking theoreticals, Cano

12:46
Comment From jibbers
I think Nats Fan meant they would land a big name player ala Gio Gonzalez, not trade him away.

12:46
Dan Szymborski: Ah, misunderstood.

12:47
Dan Szymborski: I wouldn’t be surprised if the Nats got involved in Priceamania

12:47
Comment From Guest
Peralta signing was an overpay, but the available trade options were worse overpays. Cardinals have payroll flexibility and used some of it to upgrade their worst position. So, it looks like a bad deal without context but is very reasonable in the big picture.

12:47
Dan Szymborski: I don’t think it was an overpay, so I don’t think it was a bad deal without specific context.

12:48
Comment From Mark
Did Orioles goof by asking too much in return from Cards for Hardy? What was reasonable there?

12:48
Dan Szymborski: Probably. Rumor has it that they wanted Miller, which is just ridiculous for 1 year of Hardy.

12:49
Dan Szymborski: The O’s seem to have a pattern of poorly understand the value of their players to themselves and the value of their players to others

12:50
Dan Szymborski: It’s why I don’t expect Wieters to get traded if he doesn’t sign – hard to tell how much of this is Duquette and how much is from ownership

12:50
Dan Szymborski: As I noted, if the rumors about Peralta to OF in Baltimore idea were true, it reflects very poorly on the organization.

12:51
Comment From Guest
What if you are delivering cake? A cake storing car would be handy for that.

12:51
Dan Szymborski: Yeah, but you wouldn’t *store* the cake in the car, unless it was a specially refrigerated truck

12:52
Dan Szymborski: An attractive young woman once left a Caesar salad in my car one Friday evening, resulting in me finding it Monday morning. Cake would probably smell better, but wouldn’t be pleasant after a couple days in a hot car.

12:52
Comment From Robert
THANK YOU for pointing out that Peralta’s suspension was for pre-2013 (most likely in 2012). That has been the biggest gap in the whole Biogenesis narrative–no one seems to notice that most of that group (Peralta and Cruz most notably) had down years in 2012 and rebounded under greater scrutiny from MLB in 2013.

12:53
Comment From Dan
Was the Royals release of Felipe Paulino more DM dumbness? Seems like a great lottery ticket for the $2 mil he’d have gotten.

12:53
Dan Szymborski: Paulino would be a great fit for a team like the Royals.

12:53
Dan Szymborski: But their GM is penny-foolish, pound-foolish

12:53
Comment From RotoLando
What does ZIPS say I could get for my Cakemobile (’87 Fiero. Some body damage. AC blows cold!)

12:54
Dan Szymborski: $1000-$1500? Depends on how many original parts you have

12:54
Comment From Joe
Will the Cubs be able to sign more 1-year pitching bargains that can later be flipped for prospects? If so, which pitchers do you think might entice them. I was thinking Haren or Johnson but they’re now both gone…

12:55
Dan Szymborski: Perhaps Hammel or Hughes? Kazmir may end up signing a year contract again

12:55
Comment From Jon
With Taillon and Polanco coming, seems Pirates biggest hole is at 1B. Do you see Hart or Loney outperforming another Garrett Jones/Gaby Sanchez platoon? Hopefully they can get creative because none of those options are too exciting to me…

12:56
Dan Szymborski: I think they give Lambo a shot.

12:56
Comment From Chris
Federowicz have a chance to stick at C for Dodgers?

12:57
Dan Szymborski: Maybe as a backup, but if they get to a point where they would consider him a starter, they’d probably spend a lot on a better option

12:57
Comment From SK
Given the market, what position is the most efficient way to add wins this offseason?

12:57
Dan Szymborski: Probably OF, though the FA market isn’t generally an efficient way to add wins

12:58
Dan Szymborski: That’s why when you’re taking high FAs, you don’t go after them unless your team is in a position to be more concerned about the number of wins you’re adding rather than the efficiency

12:58
Comment From Cory
What’s the next logical move for the Tigers? Signing one of Granderson/Choo/Beltran to play LF?

12:58
Dan Szymborski: Absolutely. They make more sense than the occasional Cano rumor

12:58
Comment From Guest
Um? Red Sox projections are out?

12:58
Dan Szymborski: No, they should be up Mondayish

12:58
Comment From Guest
What do you think of the Cardinals OF depth? Holliday, Bourjos, Jay, Craig, Taveras, Robinson, and a few interesting prospects.

12:59
Dan Szymborski: Well, I like it obviously!

12:59
Comment From Sixto Lezcano
What would have to happen for the Rangers to be winners, or at least co-winners, in the Fielder trade?

12:59
Dan Szymborski: Fielder ages tremendously well.

12:59
Comment From Terry
Does the CBO’s projection of inflation overall really have that much predictive value on the dollar-value of a win?

1:01
Dan Szymborski: When I model salary growth in FA historically by year with CPI, it shows up as solid linear classifier

1:01
Comment From APODionysus
“terrible move by Angels” is redundant

1:01
Comment From Zach (not Sanders)
Re: inflation – you also need to discount the future wins. So, if your discount rate is the same as your inflation rate, those sequences are identical.

1:01
Comment From Jay
The Cardinals had a stretch of “ultra-intelligent moves”? This is the same team who capped off last offseason by giving Ty Wigginton 2 years?

1:01
Dan Szymborski: Nobody’s perfect.

1:01
Dan Szymborski: I like to think I’m quite bright and I’ve done the occasional stupid thing

1:02
Comment From Kramerica
What could Cubs expect from a Samardzija deal?

1:02
Dan Szymborski: No top prospect, but the shark’s interesting enough that they should get a couple real ones. Hard to be more specific.

1:02
Comment From Gustavo
Orioles just got Brad Brach. #dominoes

1:03
Dan Szymborski: Not a big deal, but that’s an interesting pickup

1:03
Comment From juan pierres mustache
Orioles have acquired RHP Brad Brach from the Padres in exchange for minor league RHP Devin Jones. #bigmoves

1:03
Comment From That One Guy
Tigers/Scherzer. Can they get a young LF for him?

1:03
Dan Szymborski: They could, but they’re not trading him now

1:03
Comment From Erich
Over/Under on Peralta WAR for the Cards, 10 over the life of the contract?

1:03
Dan Szymborski: I think ZiPS has him at 12.5 or so.

1:03
Dan Szymborski: Oh, for the contract

1:04
Dan Szymborski: probably slightly under 10

1:04
Comment From yanks fan
Love the McCann signing, how much better will his Zips be in NY then it would have been in ATL

1:04
Dan Szymborski: Moderately better. Good home for a power hitter

1:04
Comment From thelaundry
Do you buy into the “Duffy Rule”, as in Danny Duffy? Theory is that LH starters throwing 92+ that can maintain velocity through 100+ IP are likely to be good (past examples include Unit, Santana, Sabathia, Price, Hamels and Kershaw).

1:05
Dan Szymborski: Haven’t studied it, so I can’t say for sure

1:05
Comment From Cannonball Titcomb
Toronto should totally trade Sanchez and/or Stroman for Samarzija. agree?

1:05
Dan Szymborski: *and* would be crazy. *or* would need to be part of a specific plan of the BLue Jays aggressively pushing forward, not as the only move they make

1:05
Comment From Matt
Think the Dbacks will make a move or just ride the current young players hoping for someone to progress?

1:06
Dan Szymborski: Low-key offseason for them I think

1:06
Comment From Pessimistic Phillies Phan
I saw the ZiPS projection for Maikel Franco was quite optimistic, you think there’s any chance he starts the season in the majors? (RAJ did mention him twice in radio interviews as a 3rd base candidate). Also would you go with Asche or Franco?

1:06
Dan Szymborski: I’d probably go with Franco as he’s the best option available.

1:06
Comment From Zach (not Sanders)
Ok, well how about an email address, smart guy? The Rotographs mailbag mailbag link is broken.

1:07
Dan Szymborski: Hmm, you’d have to search the web, I can’t give out an email address unless I know for a fact that the email address is public

1:07
Comment From APODionysus
Auron from FFX as Manager!

1:07
Comment From Zach (not Sanders)
Twitter is an abomination and I will not use it.

1:07
Dan Szymborski: Your loss! Twitter is an amazing tool, though I guess part of that is my job makes it useful to me

1:08
Comment From RotoLando
Your GI Joe/D&D army is no match for my Sphere of Annihilation *lobs a bowling ball at Joes*

1:08
Dan Szymborski: A few more and then it’s time to go.

1:08
Dan Szymborski: You can’t use any weapon in GI Joe that one of the guys can’t carry

1:08
Comment From Jose Abreu
What do you see my defense looking like this year? Ive already been told you think Im only going to be a league average 1B offensively..

1:08
Dan Szymborski: It’s reportedly been below-average. I have no good way of measuring Cuban defense.

1:09
Comment From RotoLando
Overall, Twitter weirdness dips for a few hours on Mondays. Coincidence?

1:09
Comment From Furman
Why not Gogo from FF3/6? Bat him right after your best hitter and you have an instant rally whenever your best guy gets on base.

1:10
Dan Szymborski: Oops, I closed the CiL window

1:11
Dan Szymborski: Yeah, that would make sense. He couldnt’ do Bum Rush or Ultima as good as the original, but he did do them fairly well

1:11
Comment From Funny haha
How is Gio a big name? It’s only 3 letters. That’d make Dan Szy-ulo-czynski a big name too.

1:12
Dan Szymborski: OK, a couple more and then time to go. This is the last chance for the Random Crazy Question

1:12
Comment From Dave
How come the Pirates can’t increase payroll when they have several big contracts coming off the books, attendance is up, and their got increased revenue from the media deal? The Reds are up near $100M with a pretty similar situation.

1:12
Dan Szymborski: I thin kthey eventually will when there’s a *need* to do so rather than a *want*

1:12
Comment From Zach (not Sanders)
How much value do you think GMs assign to having a player in a walk year, which for some strange reason people think makes it liklier that said player will not only re-sign. Of course, it only has value if it’s 1) true, and 2) the player re-signs at less than FMV. I believe I’ve seen Dave Cameron make this argument before, but I could be wrong.

1:13
Dan Szymborski: I don’t get the impression that GMs give it extra or diminished value

1:13
Comment From Terry
What if it were the perfect cake-storage temperature outside?

1:13
Dan Szymborski: Then you could buy a cake-storage shed instead of a cake-storage car

1:13
Dan Szymborski: Sheds are cheaper than cars

1:13
Comment From Gabe
Am I the only one getting tired of Mets fans saying the sky is falling just because Sandy didn’t want to overpay for Jhonny Peralta? Come on, guys.

1:13
Dan Szymborski: Mets fans are prone to self-immolation.

1:13
Comment From Perd
Is it fair to say that Detroit would’ve given Peralta a QO if Fielder had already been off the books at the deadline? Shouldn’t they have offered him one anyway? Were they really afraid he’d take it?

1:13
Dan Szymborski: I think they should’ve either way.

1:14
Dan Szymborski: 1/14 is nothing.

1:14
Comment From Tom
Now that the season is over…have you dove into EUIV yet? What country(ies) have you played as? How did it go? Inquiring minds want to know…

1:14
Dan Szymborski: Not as much as I should have.

1:14
Comment From barchie unker
Will Josh Hamilton make the Angels look a little less stupid this year?

1:14
Dan Szymborski: A little less. His early season was bad enough that it got him all the way from overrated to underrated

1:15
Dan Szymborski: He did get back up to like a 110 OPS+ secon dhalf

Why is the ad here trying to sell me bras? Is it a “fat” joke? Oh my god…the internet has become sentient and it’s begun mocking us…

To follow-up on that win efficiency and free agent question, shouldn’t every team not named the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox or Angels, be always more concerned about the efficiency of adding wins, rather than the number?

1:16
Dan Szymborski: Think of it like chess. You build small advantages over the course of the game, but be willing to cash them in for an advantage later

1:16
Dan Szymborski: When you’re up there, the marginal value of a win increaes

RE: Franco projection, where did you see that?

1:16
Dan Szymborski: I talked to the ZiPS creator and he let me see the projection on Twitter.

You’re an amazing tool!

1:17
Dan Szymborski: Tools can be amazingly useful. Can you imagine doing complex electrical or plumbing work without the proper tool? Thank you for the compliment.

So do you think the Rockies will actually try to make improvements this offseason or will O’Dowd just do his usual “hide under a pile of coats and hope everything works out” routine?

1:18
Dan Szymborski: That’s my usual descriptor of the Rockies.

1:18
Dan Szymborski: See no reason to think it’ll be any different

1:19
Dan Szymborski: O’Dowd’s a sharp guy, but never all that good at planning and the Geivett promotion didn’t change the team’s thinking

1:19
Dan Szymborski: Ownership is a problem too. It’s not helpful to have the owner putting kibosh on trades

I would take Wakka from FFX as a catcher.

1:19
Dan Szymborski: But you’d have to hear him constantly.

1:20
Dan Szymborski: When people hear Wacha, they think of Fozzie Bear, but when I hear Wacha, I think of goddamn Wakka bitching about the MACHINA

Pirates DFA’d Garret Jones. They could have got something in trade no?

1:20
Dan Szymborski: Not much

Why you smell so good?

1:21
Dan Szymborski: Irish Spring Moisture Blast. It creates an explosion of moisture that leaves families broken and corpses strewing the land, but provides that skin moistness that gets me through a hard day of sittin’ around.

Regarding Cards’ “ultra-intelligent moves”: I’m a Cards fan, and obviously I’m pleased with my FO. I was only disputing the poster’s claim that we had some kind of streak going. The Cardinals last 4 moves IIRC were Peralta, Bourjos, Axford, Wigginton. Looks like one great move, 2 decent ones and one clear dud. Not exactly a great streak.

1:21
Dan Szymborski: Does not sending the Great Kozmandias to a guillotine count as a move?

Wobbling with Ice Climbers: fair or cheating?

1:22
Dan Szymborski: If a game allows you to do it, it’s fair game.

Cod or BF 4?

1:22
Dan Szymborski: Haven’t played either.

1:23
Dan Szymborski: Mostly likely, I’ll still be playing TF2

The cake storage car could be driven to different climates to ensure it’s always at the best cake storage temperature

I live in the Eastern Hills. Is that far enough away from you or do I have to keep an eye out?

1:27
Dan Szymborski: Bad news for you then.

1:27
Dan Szymborski: I’m like 20 minutes away. Be afraid.

1:28
Dan Szymborski: (Assuming it’s the same Eastern Hills I’m thinking of)

1:28
Dan Szymborski: And my sister’s in Oakwood, so I have a good base camp for stalking.

1:28
Dan Szymborski: On that dark note, time to end the chat for another week.

When i look at the fangraphs stats by team, it lists an aggregate of all players stats who appeared even one game at a certain position. For example Mauer Dhed once so when you go to see how Twins DHs did in 2013, all of Mauers ABs are included in that. Can team stats per position be limited to actual position AB, ditto for the individual team pages position stats. Also is it possible to add certain restrictions like lineup order, like who was the best leadoff hitter or cleanup hitter, also for teams. Finally, is there a restriction like who is the best LHB, RHB, or switch hiter that can be done ?
