I’ve read a number of writers saying to shy away from players who signed big contracts and joined new teams in the offseason. How much do you buy into that theory? Should guys like Sandoval, HanRam, etc. be expected to struggle the first few months getting acclimated to their new teammates and surroundings?

Dan Szymborski: I don’t really buy into the theory, though I don’t expect it to be true.

Dan Szymborski: After all, I know that players don’t exceed projections in the final years of their contract or the first years of contracts and if players with new contracts aren’t underperforming as a group (as it includes all the players who changed teams on big contracts) then if they’re underperforming in the first months, they have to also be overperforming in later months (or they’d be short of their projections)

Dan Szymborski: Now, maybe this is what’s happening — I can’t say since I haven’t looked specifically at the issue — but I see it as improbable, though not impossible

Dan Szymborski: Players are creatures of habit – if it bothers someone, I expect them to adjust fairly quickly. After all, baseball is a game of adjustments.

Dan Szymborski: Cabrera’s a good fit for a team, but I’m not really sure Baltimore is his ideal landing spot.

Fantasy question. Keep-everyone-forever-no-salaries league. I own Addison Russell, but could potentially trade him in a 1-for-2 deal for BOTH Giolito and Bundy. Amazing stuff with those pitchers, but both TJ guys, and, well, pitchers. Russell seems so good and so safe, relatively speaking. Would you keep him or go for the SPs? Thanks!

Dan Szymborski: I expect them to get some kind of C prospect – a lottery ticket with some upside.

Dan Szymborski: Locke’s just not very good and a slightly worse Jeff Locke isn’t that useful to the pirates unless the pitcher has huge upside. But a pitcher slightly worse than jeff Locke with huge upside would unlikely be available for Jeff Locke

Dan Szymborski: I’m not a fan – PPA only really matters as a means to an end (hitting better) and any better hitting that results from taking more pitches is already credited.

Dan Szymborski: MTG is a deeper game, but Hearthstone is more elegant – and there’s quite a bit of strategy in there.

Dan Szymborski: If you’re looking at RNG as not a skill, you’d be wrong – knowing the scenarios and the possible probabilities and preparing for those contingencies is a skill thin.

Dan Szymborski: The Korean league had exploded this year offensively with juiced balls.

Dan Szymborski: The league ERA was over 5.

Dan Szymborski: Kang led the league in OPS, but there’s a lot of air in there – Eric Thames was third in the league and Yamaico Navarro hit 31 homers.

Dan Szymborski: Kang’s likely a legit major leaguer, but he’s unlikely to be anywhere close to his KBO number.

I know you’re not all up in fantasy – but I really need to not feel crazy. Dude in my league offered me Tulo for Betts and Harper. I wouldn’t trade him Harper straight up for Tulo (not going to get into the round value/etc). Am I nuts? He thinks I’m too high on Betts. I offered him Betts, Harvey, and Longoria for Tulo and Bryant. That’s kind of where I felt value was. Just curious. I’m probably crazy, but see Mookie as a potential Ellsbury type player and that’s huge for our league. And Harper, well, I’m high?

Dan Szymborski: I would not do that trade. If Tulowitzki was a regular 140-game a year guy, I’d take it.

Dan Szymborski: But realistically, he’s not. Tulo’s valuable at 100 games, but not Betts/Harper valuable, I don’t think.

But given the depth of SP depth this year, is this the year to pop a Chapman/Kimbrel type early and combine them a Henderson Alvarez type to get the innings,strikeouts,and ratio of an elite starter, with the saves

Look at that twins depth chart in the outfield. I know most analysts don’t want Buxton up yet, but what’s the harm throwing him into the fire (beyond money)? His injuries are Rendon-like flukes, is he the msot underrated (even at #2) prospect in the game right now? Seems like only a year ago he was Trout level.

Dan Szymborski: Maybe not harm, but I dont’ see any benefit for the Twins to rush into the majors a guy coming off an injury year and has one game in AA ball.

Dan Szymborski: I rather have Buxton’s age 27 year than his 2015 by a large margin. The 2015 Twins are going to suck, the 2021 Twins are an unknown quantity.

How is it possible for Addison Russell and Joey gallo to have the same current hit tool as the prospect rankings claim. Last year 1 guy struck out 40% of the time while the other struck out half as much and had an ave 70 points higher and is widely regarded as having one of the best hit tools in the minors.

Dan Szymborski: Strikeouts are really, really overrated for quality prospects.

Dan Szymborski: I only care about a prospect’s high strikeout rate when they’re not also simultaneously destroying the league

I can’t imagine Jackie Bradley Jr.’s trade value is all that high. He’s been a good prospect, and it’s not atypical to struggle in first taste at the majors. But, yikes. His wRC+ last year was 2nd worst in baseball for those with minimum 300 PA. It was 47! (Stephen Drew “wins” with 44.) That is really bad.

Doesn’t it seem like all of MLB’s new pace of play rules will introduce in game annoyance without addressing the root cause of why games are longer now than they used to be — 1. More pitching changes = more commercial breaks 2. Longer Commercial Breaks?
