Ben: John Farrell has recently said that Sandoval will have to compete for the starting 3B job, leaving it a possibility that Travis Shaw could start on Opening Day. Do you think there’s any truth in that, or just another way to push the Panda to work harder?

Dan Szymborski: I think Panda’s job hold is very tenuous, but would be surprised if they don’t let him suck for a month before pulling the plug.

Tank: Chances the Diamondbacks win the Shelby Miller trade ?

Dan Szymborski: It’s possible of course – Miller’s an establish MLB pitcher of above-average quality, but right now the money’s on the Braves winning.

Forsyth: Do you think Shaw or Sandoval would be a better 3B this season?

Dan Szymborski: I’d actually vote against either of them being actually good.

Dan Szymborski: Shaw comes with his own risks – he’s not likely to be a good full-time defender at third and even if you use his MLB statline to argue he’s improved — which you should — it’s hard to forget how recent he stunk at AAA for a year.

Dan Szymborski: (And yes, a .720 OPS in AAA stinks for a prospect)

Bork: How much negative WAR is Drake Laroche worth to the White Sox?

Dan Szymborski: Without the power of Drake, the White Sox will go 41-121.

Dan Szymborski: 41-122 that is. He’s so important that his loss will make the White Sox lose a game that never happened. MLB will go 2430-2431 this year.

Jimbo: Is this year Yasmani Grandal ascends to the heavens as a shiny golden catching god?

John: When do we see Mazara and/or Brinson? With Desmond being so cheap, can a slump excelerate a promotion for either?

Dan Szymborski: The Rangers will go as events dictate.

Utility: How is ESPN choosing their player rankings? Is it all based on writers rankings?

Dan Szymborski: I have not.

Forsyth: Crawford is now the 4th OF. The Red Sox are exploring Travis Shaw taking over for Sandoval as the everyday 3B. Are we finally reaching the point where contract value/status is weighing less on the everyday decisions, and winning is weighing more?

Dan Szymborski: It’s helpful in that the contracts are from the “previous guy” so it’s easier, psychologically, to properly treat them as sunk costs.

Ben: I took a look at your spray chart for Bogaerts in 2015, and noticed he hit a ton of deep flies to right, but only a few, including all of his homers, to left. He’s said recently he wants to add more power by swinging harder/pulling pitches in hitters’ counts, so do you think he can make a quick power turnaround? It certainly seems that he knows what the problem was; has to pull those flies instead of shooting them to right.

Dan Szymborski: Drastic changes are easier said and done.

Utility: An article came out a couple of weeks ago about how every left fielder at Fenway Park has had negative fielding metrics, including the good ones that have played there. It concludes that there might be a flaw in the metrics for the Monster. Any thoughts?

Dan Szymborski: It probably needs a park effect, though nothing would have made Hanley good.

Neifi Perez OBP: Has there been a comprehensive study on the effect of “contract years?” Does it actually portend a bump in production? I assume ZIPS ignores contract situations, right?

Dan Szymborski: I’ve looked at it and found zero value as a predictive input.

Turd Ferguson: Who will have a bigger impact on their team this year, and who will be a better player over the next 3 years – AJ Reed or Max Kepler?

Dan Szymborski: I’ll take Reed – I’m a big fan and the Astros are just begging for him to mak ehte case to sweep Singleton aside.

Julio Pepper: If a high school or college player goes undrafted in the amateur draft, can he go straight to free agency?

Dan Szymborski: They become free agents. Heath Bell is an example.

Trainman: The Mets are trying Lagares in LF, but it sounds like Cespedes will be the CF regardless.. It makes no sense to me to have lagares there against LHPs or late inning defense for Conforto. How does ZIPs see Lagares projecting as an LF vs CF, and am I overblowing this entirely?

Dan Szymborski: I think you’re overthinking it.

CamdenWarehouse: Just how far down does the Orioles OF defense rank?

Dan Szymborski: Well below-average, but not the basement I don’t think.

Matt: Sup, Dan?

Dan Szymborski: Not sure. Think I may have some chicken.

Will: What do you see as Candelario’s ceiling? Obviously he’s raked, but it’s also spring training. The Cubs have literally nowhere to play him.

Dan Szymborski: If his doubles turn into homers, they’ll either find a place to play him or someone will pay the Cubs so that they can do so.

Dan Szymborski: I don’t like naming comp ceilings, simply because most highly interesting prospect’s floor is a minor leaguer, ceiling is a superstar.

Matt: If I had to pick only one to roster between Carlos Santana and Lucas Duda, who do I pick?

Dan Szymborski: Duda

BBK: What are a few factors contributing to the league wide rise in K’s?

Dan Szymborski: Approach for one – “pitch to contact” is essentially dead for almost every organization and the horror about hitter strikeouts has mostly faded.

Saska: Hey Dan, going into ST I was pretty bearish Segura and bullish Semien, and I know SSS, but their play has had me rethinking my ranks. Any thoughts on them?

Dan Szymborski: Spring training should *shade* your opinion, not drastically change it. I’m going to be brutal here: if 9 spring training games for a hitter is significantly changing your opinion, you need to go over your decision-making process.

CamdenWarehouse: As someone who brings their family to the workplace, do you sympathize with LaRoche?

Dan Szymborski: I bring my family to the workplace? You mean cats? It’s just that if I shut the door, I’ll hear damn meowing all day.

Dan Szymborski: I think that everybody in L’Affairoche seems to have serious problems with their communication skills.

Dr Johnny Fever: Any thoughts on how the Cubs get at bats for Soler, Schwarber, and Baez? Does Baez go back to AAA?

Dan Szymborski: I suspect Baez gets 300 PA spread out over positions and Soler ekes out similar.

season tickets: is there any logical way for the Os to trade for billy hamilton? as a fan i would give up almost anything in the farm to get that type of leadoff hitter.

Dan Szymborski: You’d give up almost anything to get a leadoff hitter with a .287 OBP who only has value at a position from which they will not move Adam Jones?

Von Schloss: How do you think we see the playing time breakdown among Michael Taylor, Ben Revere & Jayson Werth?

Dan Szymborski: Werth’s PT will be dictated by performance and health. Given the concerns about both, I think the other two will both worm out 400 PA.

Josh I: Which MLB team(s) have the most variance? For me, the Blue Jays and Red Sox come to mind.

Dan Szymborski: Yankees

GSon: Uribe has been penciled as the starting 3B for the Indians..with his visa problems and rust.. is there a chance the Indians go with Giovanny Urshela for the first couple of weeks (and perhaps decade) to start this season?..

Dan Szymborski: While possible, that’s not the direction I’m going since at last check, the visa issues had been dealt with

BBK: Who is more likely to finish the season in the Jay’s rotation, Sanchez or hutch?

Dan Szymborski: Sanchez. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Hutchison is traded at some point

Reginald Denton III: What’s the word on Giancarlo Stanton this spring? Does his hamate bone injury appear to have completely healed? Any lingering effects?

Dan Szymborski: Stanton appears to be healthy, it’s just working him back in. Wouldn’t be surprised if it takes a month for him to be back in the full swing

CamdenWarehouse: Last year saw an uptick in overall offense from 13/14. Do you think it will continue to climb, stay the same, or go back down?

Dan Szymborski: Roughly the same

Dave: Hey Dan. Been struggling with my last keeper spot for weeks. Who is the most valuable out of Schwarber Puig Darvish or Franco? Thanks for your input!

Dan Szymborski: Schwarber – that C eligibility this year is massive.

Bork: The Laroche story is like a minor fenderbender which somehow turns into a 300 car pileup with gas trucks exploding everywhere

@RationalMLBfan: My favorite player hit a spring training single off an MLB ace working on his fourth best pitch. My favorite player then hit a single off a pitcher who’s going to be released and/or demoted to the minors in a week. Will you reprogram ZIPS so that it reflects the fact that my favorite player going to have a breakout year?

Chuncey WIggins: Would you watch a lifetime movie of the LaRoche debacle if Drake was played by Drake the musical artist?

Dan Szymborski: Yes

Trainman: How do you see this glut of Rays talent shaking out? Dickerson I guess will DH, Kiermaier Is a lock for CF. are locks for their position, Jennings and Souza could play the corners plus you have Morrison and Loney fighting for 1B time, but Dickerson could also factor into OF. Also, Pearce is there in platoon situation. Souza has had a slow spring and could be fighting for his spot. Sounds Messy. Who gets the spots at the end of the day?

Dan Szymborski: The Rays usually allow situations to be fluid.

GN: Alan Craig is not on the 40 man, but does have an MLB contract. Is he accruing service time?

Dan Szymborski: I do not believe so.

Otis: Better chance of cracking opening day roster, Max Kepler or Jabari Blash?

Dan Szymborski: Weird either/or but at least it’s not “rank my 17 keepers”

Dan Szymborski: I believe Blash – Kepler full time at AAA makes sense.

CamdenWarehouse: I’m generally of the opinion that chemistry is the result of performance and not the other way around, but I have to think that the White Sox clubhouse situation is not so good right now. Do you think it will impact them this year?

Dan Szymborski: I doubt it.

Dan Szymborski: Remember how disappointing they were last year *with* Drake’s veteran leadership.

Trainman: Do the Angels have the highest probability of a team that has the highest ceiling but could crash and burn to the bottom of their division?

Dan Szymborski: Those odds are probably the Mike Trout injury odds.

Richard: Anyone you’re looking forward to watching in the Cuban game tomorrow?

Dan Szymborski: Really all the Cubans that play are interesting – we’ve seen all the Rays

Scott : Giants fans have been spoiled rotten with this kind of thing but do a Randal Grichuk type emergence in Mac Williamson this year?

Dan Szymborski: I wouldn’t go nuts yet.

Bork: The Jays play the White Sox April 25th. How great would it be if Toronto had a Drake day and just invited their Drake instead of Laroche?

phil: Does KEON BROXTON look like he won the job in CF? What do you think of him?

Dan Szymborski: Seems like that’s what they’re going with, but I think his glove will make him a real MLBer, but his bat will keep him below BA.

Johnny5Alive: I forgot, when you project at bats for ZiPS, is that taking into account playing time? Just curious since for some folks there are big discrepancies between depth charts and ZiPs, but I thought you included playing time projections in your model.

Dan Szymborski: PT projections only for team stuff and fantasy projections.

Dan Szymborski: For vanilla projections, ZiPS is agnostic about future playing time

Frank: Dan, I am very much on the Mookie Betts bandwagon. I know a lot of people like him, so it’s impossible for him to be underrated. But, I truly feel that he is going to break out in a MAJOR way and be an MVP candidate. Do you think Mookie Betts has a chance to be a top 5 MVP candidate in the AL?

Dan Szymborski: Wouldn’t be that crazy – ZiPS has him 4th in the AL in WAR among position players already!

War2d2: With Jon Lester’s elbow now in the news to go along with his inability to throw to a base that doesn’t rhyme with “gnome,” what are your feelings on the long-term outcome of that contract? Do you think ultimately it’ll be a bad deal for the Cubs? Once age or injury reduces Lester to an average pitcher it seems like the rest of the package (worst fielding pitcher in baseball, worst hitter in history) will plummet him to replacement level far faster than would be expected for a one-time ace.

Dan Szymborski: I think it’ll be OK. Not great, but not horrible.

Dan Szymborski: I’m not as worried about a bone chip.

HotGraphs: How bad does Ryan Howard have to be before the Phillies finally stop playing hi?

Dan Szymborski: I keep think he hits that threshold but somehow still gets play.

Champ: What’s your thought on Castellanos stepping up in production this year?

Dan Szymborski: I’ve soured a bit on him – he just hasn’t shown much progress.

Uther: Does batting order matter over the long term? Say the Reds batted Votto leadoff all season as opposed to batting him third, for example. What sort of impact would you think that change would have on wins / runs scored?

Dan Szymborski: Very little.

Justin: You’ve said that you manually adjust playing time estimates in ZIPS, but are there ever situations where the projection for a player is just so ridiculous that you feel the urge to manually adjust the actual projection as well?

Dan Szymborski: No.

Dan Szymborski: It’s the ZIPS projection system, not the ZiPSandwhateverSzymborskiarbitrarilychanges projection system

BakedBean: I don’t want this to sound defensive, but how long does a player like Shaw have to outperform expectations to shake off the stigma of being bad in AAA? It seems like he is fighting off stigma of low pedigree

Dan Szymborski: Again, it depends.

Dan Szymborski: Performance isn’t a binary thing where it’s either 0 or 1 and enough time at 1 you just call a palyer a 1

Dan Szymborski: I really hate this type of question because you can’t make a hard-and-fast simple rule because expectations and overperformance and time are all such important variables.

Craig in Chicago: I still have the Astros. Should this McCullers news scare me, more?

Dan Szymborski: Do you mean that he’s starting the season on the DL or was there something new and scary this morning I missed because I slept late?

Dan Szymborski: I’d be worried evern in the former case. The MRI was reportedly fine, but any pitcher with an existing injury frightens me.

Rick: Re: Fenway LFers – Granted it’s a small sample, but Cespedes was worth 5 DRS and 6.5 UZR in LF for the Red Sox in 2014.

Dan Szymborski: But remember, he’s been better in LF elsewhere too

Cubbie: How much longer will the Cubs wait on Contreras?

Dan Szymborski: There’ sno real urgency.

Matt: Have you ever stopped to wonder why the sky is blue, but then realize that you just want a sandwich?

Rondon: Is there an ETA for Eddy Martinez? I’ve only read that he could be very good or close to replaceable, but nothing about when to expect to see him play.

Dan Szymborski: You can’t realistically have an ETA on a guy like him.

Clint Hurdle: Looks like the Pirates are planning on having Jaso lead off with Cutch batting second. Good idea, bad idea, or the best idea?

BakedBean: Does anyone else think Cespy in CF is a joke? I love Cespy but he didn’t want to even play RF at Fenway, and now he’s a CF ? He really doesn’t have the speed or the range for that role, imo

Dan Szymborski: I dont’ think he’s a good CF.

Dan Szymborski: They’re still being dragged into their rebuild kicking and screaming.

Julio Pepper: Re: amateur draft, what’s to stop someone like Bryce Harper from floating “I’m going to college so I refuse to sign w/ anyone” rumors, not being drafted, and then saying “whoops changed my mind, now I’m a free agent?”

Dan Szymborski: No MLB team cares if they can’t sign their 40th round pick.

Sprung: Does Cory Luebke have a decent shot of making the Pirates roster?

Dan Szymborski: I’m not sure he has enough time.

Chuncey Wiggins: Which historical war or prolonged armed conflict would you have least liked to personally experience? WW1 and trench warfare sounds like a never ending nightmare.

P’Shaw: Travis Shaw says his improved major league performance is due to being able to watch video of pitchers, something which he did not have access to in the minor leagues. Is this useful info or a pile of baloney?

Dan Szymborski: It shows he has the capacity to learn, which is good, but you can’t forget his performance.
