12:05 |
Dan Szymborski: I’m going to try to keep all the off-topic questions for the lightning round
12:06 |
Comment From JoeyWould you trade away Betts ($1) & Wong ($1) for Abreau ($17) in a $260 dynasty auction league where the salaries go up $10 every other season starting 2016?
12:06 |
Dan Szymborski: I would not.
12:06 |
Comment From adamWhat kind of pen work will Strickland and/or Finnegan see this season?
12:07 |
Dan Szymborski: I suspect Finnegan’s exact role is very much up in the air. I suspect Strickland starts in the minors
12:07 |
Comment From GuestHey Dan….Anyway we could get a ZIPS spreadsheet with platoon splits?
12:07 |
Dan Szymborski: That’s always the last thing done.
12:07 |
Comment From DanHow’s the 2015 ZIPS touch ups going? Or more NES-emulating of late?
12:08 |
Dan Szymborski: It’s coming along. Just haven’t doneo requests yet. Though not today (doing another stream after the chat)
12:08 |
Comment From ChrisZIPs is projecting Phil Hughes to have the second highest WAR for all SP’s on the FG projections page. It projects him having a .76 BB/9. Other than last season (career 2.37 BB/9), why does ZIPs think his control will stay at that elite level?
12:08 |
Dan Szymborski: Ignore the WAR for now – there appears to be a FIP issue in which the FG calculated FIP for ZiPS on the player pages is drastically lowre than FG calculated FIP for ZiPS on the team previews.
12:09 |
Dan Szymborski: Apples is aware and working on itt.
12:09 |
Dan Szymborski: I’m tagging off-topic questions to be answered during the lightning round. Slows the chat down if I get too bogged down on some random question like DC statehood in the middle.
12:09 |
Comment From adamAt 35, how effective will Jayson Werth be?
12:09 |
Dan Szymborski: He shoudl still be OK, but the smart money is on good odds of decline every year.
12:10 |
Comment From DavidWill the auction calculator incorporate ZiPS now that it’s been posted?
12:10 |
Comment From mtswWhats your feeling on the validity of using ZiPS to predict team performance? Have you tested whether it outperforms other team projections? What would you say the rough margin of error is, in games?
12:11 |
Dan Szymborski: That’s the reason I do simulations with error bars – ZiPS has the large mean win variance (as you expect from any method, PC or human). But what I care about is hitting the percentile and ZiPS does very good at it, i.e 20% of teams hitting their 80th percentile projection, only 10% of teams being 10th percentile and under, etc.
12:11 |
Comment From meatballsflyi have jered weaver, was offered brandon moss, deep at pitching, should i take the deal?
12:11 |
Dan Szymborski: Not terribly crazy about it – you’ll have to be deep at pitching and it’s a good format for weaver
12:11 |
Comment From JoeyThought/projections this year on Rick Porcello in Boston?
12:12 |
Dan Szymborski: I like Porcello. I think he’ll do fine in Boston, though not as fine if they had signed Headley instead
12:12 |
Comment From adamDoesn’t matter how feisty Jackson is, Grover has 100 pounds on him
12:12 |
Dan Szymborski: Ever watch one of those early UFCs? In which a thin tiny guy beats the crap out of the lumbering guy much bigger than them?
12:13 |
Comment From J in MaineDo you believe Pedro Alvarez can/will return to his power hitting self? Better contact and more walks are great but without the power….
12:14 |
Dan Szymborski: He’ll hit for more power, but he’s not exciting as a first baseman.
12:14 |
Comment From mtswAnyone voting for Jackson is insane. He’s fiesty but outclassed by Cleveland’s huge weight advantage.
12:14 |
Dan Szymborski: Again, watch some of those early UFC’s with weight class/skill mismatches.
12:14 |
Comment From Marco PoloIn a 4×4 league with R,Hr,Obp, and Slg who would you rather have Trout or Stanton?
12:14 |
Comment From VslykeNoticed that ZIPS likes Eury Perez a lot as a replacement for the ailing Upton. Do you think he has upside beyond his 2015 projection (1.4 WAR in ~450 PAs) in the next few seasons?
12:15 |
Dan Szymborski: Mild upside, nothing significant. LIkely a better option than Upton
12:15 |
Comment From buhhhas there ever been an analysis of international prospect signings like people have done with the draft?
12:15 |
Dan Szymborski: Off-hand, I’m not sure.
12:15 |
Comment From GuestWill the Alex Guerrero situation going to get ugly if he refuses to go to AAA?
12:15 |
Dan Szymborski: I dont’ think it will get that ugly. I think there’s a high chance he gets traded
12:15 |
Comment From RyanGallo for Gattis in a dynasty league (i dont have a catcher at the moment)… Crazy?
12:16 |
Dan Szymborski: Depends on your qualification rules. The second Gattis can no longer play catcher for you, Gallo becomes more valuable
12:16 |
Comment From adamWho will see Major League work first: Lindor or Buxton?
12:16 |
Dan Szymborski: Lindor I think
12:16 |
Comment From Johnim building my spreadsheet in preparation for my nl only 13 team league auction… can’t find a projection on Kang… did you post one?
12:16 |
Dan Szymborski: He’s on the spreadseheet.
12:16 |
Comment From JoeyHow about Betts & Morneau ($1) (instead of Wong) for Abreu?
12:17 |
Dan Szymborski: More interesting, but I think Betts will get some positional flexibility. Morneau has some value as long as he’s in Colorado. Still not sure I do it.
12:17 |
Comment From L. ScottHey Dan, how concerned are you about Sale’s foot injury? Could this be a season-long issue?
12:17 |
Dan Szymborski: I’m not concerned unless the Sox start rushing him back.
12:18 |
Dan Szymborski: A broken foot isn’t like a ligament sprain in the arm, of course, but the big deal is if he comes back not comfortable and changes his motion to compensate, bad things can h appen
12:18 |
Dan Szymborski: Bad things happen when pitchers change their motions
12:18 |
Comment From ECInteresting that sZips sees Ryan Zimmerman being pretty much good Ryan Zimmerman while he’s healthy. If he stays healty, he could be a pretty great first baseman.
12:18 |
Dan Szymborski: Even with plus D, I don’t think he’ll hit enough to be a pretty great first baseman.
12:18 |
Comment From BretI looked up Daric Barton’s numbers today (he’s on a spring invite with the Jays, who don’t really have a sure 1B). He’s got a 106 wRC+ away from Oakland, has posted strong OBPs and is on a team with enough power to go around, and the defense is always good. No platoon issue either (actually, reverse splits). Am I nuts for talking myself into this as a viable option?
12:19 |
Dan Szymborski: He’s interesting, but mainly because the Jays are rostering Smoak.
12:20 |
Dan Szymborski: If you have DH time, I think Barton’s actually the better player
12:20 |
Comment From STiVoDoes ZiPS know how tall (or heavy) players are?
12:20 |
Dan Szymborski: No, because the historical data, for a word, is absolute crap.
12:20 |
Comment From GuestI wonder how glorious Danny Espinosa’s beard was to get that stache
12:20 |
Comment From Caveman JonesThink the Sox end up eventually trading one of Betts/Victorino/Craig/Nava/Napoli before the season starts?
12:21 |
Dan Szymborski: Before the season starts? No.
12:21 |
Comment From STiVoWhich current player throws the best cutter?
12:21 |
Comment From JuanRe: Eno’s article about the pirate’s pitchers road HR/FB rate being high. Is there any reason you could think of, other than park factors, that might explain why PIT’s offesne and pitching both have really high HR/FB rates away from home? It seems too crazy to explain just by road park factors.
12:22 |
Dan Szymborski: I haven’t yet read the piece so can’t comment on it. It’s important to note that the data are really noisy.
12:22 |
Dan Szymborski: And since PNC plays as a pitchers’ park, there’s an effect in there too
12:22 |
Comment From Jobu-Cerranos LockerYour thoughts on Castillo? I’ve heard him compared to Victorino, McCutchen Lite. Think he is as good as Abreu or Puig?
12:23 |
Dan Szymborski: As good as Abreu or Puig? No.
12:23 |
Dan Szymborski: In fact, I would be shocked if he were as good as Abreu and Puig.
12:24 |
Comment From ECWhat does Zips say would be a fair extension for Bryce Harper?
12:24 |
Dan Szymborski: Haven’t run it yet
12:24 |
Comment From adam$14 Werth for $15 Cobb. Who wins?
12:24 |
Dan Szymborski: Cobb. Pitchers have downside, but so do aging sluggers.
12:24 |
Comment From BennyCan we assume that Andrew Jackson would have some army buddies surrounding the ring to take potshots at Cleveland similar to to a lumberjack match?
12:24 |
Dan Szymborski: The ring does not allow that.
12:25 |
Comment From MikeWill Marcus Semien be playing shortstop for the A’s at the end of the year?
12:25 |
Dan Szymborski: Most likely. They’re going to give him every chance to show he can play it
12:25 |
Comment From ECHow close are Zips contract projections to those that players actually receive? Do you change Zips annually to account for flaws? How so?
12:25 |
Dan Szymborski: Couldn’t tell you the error off hand, but ZiPS performs very well here (which isn’t shocking since a lot of teams have similar methodologies)
12:25 |
Comment From ECWho projects better over the 7 years of Scherzer’s contract… Scherzer, ZImmermann, or Strasburg?
12:25 |
Dan Szymborski: Havne’t specifically run this
12:26 |
Comment From Adam RWhat can we expect from Ervin Santana? Will he be enough to get the Twins under 90 losses?
12:26 |
Dan Szymborski: I think he’ll eat innings as a 3/4 guy.
12:26 |
Comment From ECHow long did it take you to get version one of Zips up and running?
12:26 |
Dan Szymborski: About a year. Not that I worked on it 40 hours a week or anything
12:27 |
Comment From dainoffJohan Santana 80 MLB IP over/ under?
12:27 |
Dan Szymborski: Over. he’s got like 2K innings.
12:27 |
Dan Szymborski: Though I guess you almost certainly mean future. Under.
12:27 |
Comment From BrianChapman’s Fastball is analogous to which historical player’s power?
12:27 |
Dan Szymborski: Hoover Dam.
12:27 |
Comment From mtswI can’t decide whether Jackson would be among the most likely or least likely to bet against himself and throw the fight.
12:27 |
Comment From Art VandelayAndrew Jackson’s fists were probably hard as diamond. Weight advantage doesn’t matter much when Jackson has both the reach and the athleticism.
12:27 |
Comment From AndrewLong-term buy or sell: Patrick Corbin?
12:27 |
Dan Szymborski: Buy, he can’t be that expensive right now.
12:27 |
Comment From GSonArriving late.. like our host, the “Dave Cameron wannabe” Dan the man Szymborski..
12:27 |
Dan Szymborski: I’m a contemporary of Dave!
12:28 |
Comment From BrandonWhen will ZiPS be exportable with player ID’s on here? Really would love them for fantasy
12:28 |
Dan Szymborski: When Dave has ’em ready
12:28 |
Comment From zurzlesI have a choice between keeping Rizzo at UTIL (Goldy and MCab taking up the other 1B spots) or Sale. This is killing me. I hate having a full-time UTIL. Who do you keep?
12:28 |
Dan Szymborski: I’d actually try and trade Cabrera. If you’re cutting either Rizzo or Sale, you have some roster construction issues.
12:28 |
Comment From Larry BernandezAs an Indians/Browns fan, I know Jackson will win because Cleveland always loses.
12:29 |
Comment From Adam RWhi will have the better MLB career Buxton or Sano and who do they compare to?
12:29 |
Dan Szymborski: Buxton I think – broader range of skills.
12:29 |
Comment From GSonKris Bryant will be better than Javier Baez because___________?
12:30 |
Dan Szymborski: Better minor league record, he doesn’t yet have MLB struggles on his resume, and his contact issues are nowhere near Baez’s.
12:30 |
Comment From C,rayhorseWas Cashman. On board with low balling Moncada
12:30 |
Dan Szymborski: Don’t know.
12:30 |
Comment From ChrisDo you think Josh Harrison see’s time in OF or 2B this year, or is it all 3B?
12:30 |
Dan Szymborski: I think if injuries happen, the Pirates will make use of his flexibility
12:30 |
Comment From DCOn Jackson – “Quick to take offense, Jackson was known for his sudden flashes of rage and propensity for dueling.”
12:30 |
Comment From GSonTrevor Bauer is changing his motion all the time..from inning to inning to pitch to pitch.. How can he be considered a “break out” candidate with all this brainiac stuff going on?
12:30 |
Dan Szymborski: Because talent’s there.
12:30 |
Comment From AJArismendy Alcantara already qualifies at 2B/OF. If it takes five games to qualify for a position, do you see him adding 3B (early season Bryant stopgap?) or SS this year?
12:30 |
Dan Szymborski: I think it very likely he gets a lot of positions
12:31 |
Comment From HappyFunBallWhich side would you rather have of Pedroia and Betts, or Cano and J. Pederson?
12:31 |
Dan Szymborski: That’s a real pick ’em for me.
12:31 |
Comment From BrianCan Teddy ride a moose in the brawls?
12:31 |
Dan Szymborski: No moose.
12:31 |
Comment From DougIf Allan Craig and Mike Napoli both hit their ceilings which one is more valuable?
12:32 |
Dan Szymborski: Both are at their ceilings. Craig was so bad last year that you can’t just ignore it.
12:32 |
Comment From GSonNick Swisher y back?. or just another bad season for a club that could be using his $$$ contract for way better things?..
12:32 |
Comment From mtswWhat input to ZiPS do you most strongly suspect contributes mostly or only noise, if you had to pick one?
12:32 |
Dan Szymborski: Used to be pinch-hitting ABs. I actually remove them now – pinch-hitting actually reduces predictive value of the line
12:32 |
Comment From Con$1 Chris Owings worth taking a flyer on? Really dont what to expect from this guy.
12:33 |
Comment From BrianWhat is the best current game for testing a new build?
12:33 |
Dan Szymborski: Wait, what?
12:33 |
Dan Szymborski: Rephrase and I’ll get it during the lightning round
12:33 |
Comment From BrandonWho are some late round pitchers that you like?
12:33 |
Dan Szymborski: I’ll be writing about this in the not too distant future
12:35 |
Comment From BrianC. Martinez has some of the best pitches in baseball… what is holding him back?
12:35 |
Dan Szymborski: He’s had trouble with lefties for one, but I think he’ll be fine
12:35 |
Comment From AndySo what do you do for the next month, now that all the preseason projections are done and there are no in-season projections to update?
12:36 |
Dan Szymborski: All my other work! I write about a lot more than projections, even if that’s the thing you first associate with me
12:36 |
Comment From RyanWhen Hanley loses SS eligibility where does that leave his fantasy relevance over the nest few years?
12:36 |
Dan Szymborski: As a very ordinary outfielder
12:37 |
Comment From mtswBesides Cleveland, who actually did it, which President do you feel had the best shot at winning non-consecutive terms? I feel like if Nixon had won in 1960, he probably would’ve lost in ’64 and had a good shot at it.
12:37 |
Dan Szymborski: Oops, meant to save t hat for lightning round
12:37 |
Dan Szymborski: Van Buren I think had some chance if he had done some things differently
12:38 |
Comment From mtswRumor going around that the Orioles may try Davis in RF and Pearce at 1B. Crazy enough to work given Camden Yards’ tiny RF and Crush’s great arm?
12:38 |
Dan Szymborski: It’s not insane. Teams should be creative at trying to get as many quality players into the lineup as possible
12:38 |
Comment From mymausDo you have a source for recent ADPs instead of an all dates ADP? I’d like an ADP representing the latest injury changes that come close to my draft at the end of March.
12:38 |
Dan Szymborski: I do not. You’ll have to ask someone who runs a fantasy site, I think
12:38 |
Comment From adamwhat is Heywards power ceiling at this point?
12:38 |
Dan Szymborski: It’s still there, but I don’t think there’s much chance it’s more than very good range
12:38 |
Comment From zurzlesRousey vs Cleveland
12:38 |
Comment From SteveVConsidering time share, do you think Boston’s Castillo gets 550 AB’s?
12:38 |
Dan Szymborski: I’d take the under I think
12:38 |
Comment From ZQDo you know where can I find the master ZiPS projections that include likelihood of events? I love those. I believe it was said that after all the team projections were posted, a master spreadsheet would be available. THANKS!
12:39 |
Comment From SteveVLast year was a small sample. Do you believe in Brewers Fiers to be a top 60 pitcher?
12:39 |
Dan Szymborski: Top 60? Too optimistic
12:39 |
Comment From RussWhich version of Jean Segura are we more likely to see this year: 2013 or 2014?
12:39 |
Dan Szymborski: Like most of these types of questions, somewhere int he middle. This shit ain’t binary!
12:39 |
Comment From PhilWhen Zips projections appear on FG do FG staff adjust Zips raw data playing time/IP projections to their depth projections like they do for Steamer?
12:40 |
Dan Szymborski: For the purposes of the FG depth charts, yes
12:40 |
Dan Szymborski: Though ZiPS things that *I* do rank the highest in canon
12:40 |
Comment From dainoffIf you were going to get unjustly suspended because of a Twitter feud Keith Law-Schilling-style, with whom would it be and why?
12:40 |
Dan Szymborski: I doubt it would happen. I tend to know where my boundaries are.
12:41 |
Comment From Joeover/under on .280/25 HRs for Machado
12:41 |
Dan Szymborski: I’d take the under on the HRs, over on the BA.
12:41 |
Comment From SteveVPollock did good last year in half a season. Do you see him going 15/65/.280/20?
12:41 |
Dan Szymborski: That’s too aggressive for me
12:42 |
Comment From STiVoWho is going to finish 2nd in the 2015 AL MVP race, losing to Mookir Betts?
12:42 |
Dan Szymborski: I’m going to say Cano
12:42 |
Comment From BillyDynasty draft in deep league with K/BB as an extra category. Am I wrong to lean Nola when Finnegan, Marco Gonzales, Hoffman and Shipley are also all available? Being close to MLB is a plus
12:43 |
Dan Szymborski: I’d rather have Finnegan and Gonzales for sure
12:43 |
Comment From Karma S.What is your favorite position?
12:43 |
Dan Szymborski: Assuming this isn’t a sexual question, second base. It’s where I usually played if not pitching
12:44 |
Comment From EricHow did Jays overall projected WAR increase to 39.2 from 37.5 but their projected record dropped from 84-78 to 83-79 when ZiPS was added?
12:44 |
Dan Szymborski: I didn’t run it, so I can’t tell you.
12:44 |
Comment From GuestWow the Phillies got beat a div 2 school
12:45 |
Dan Szymborski: Well, they didn’t play a lot of their good players. I use good players loosely
12:45 |
Comment From gaedelWhy is Soler projected for only as half a season (even though he will start the season in the bigs) while guys like joey gallo are projected for much more?
12:45 |
Dan Szymborski: Because ZiPS knows his injury history. Shouldn’t take playing time projections over-seriously
12:45 |
Comment From mtswExplain the decline in popularity of the Starcraft 2 e-sports scene.
12:45 |
Dan Szymborski: There are newer things out there.
12:46 |
Dan Szymborski: Starcraft has to compete with newer games like LOL and DOTA2 and on the strategy front, hearthstone has become big
12:47 |
Dan Szymborski: Note that I am saving off-topic questions for the Lightning Round. Or should I say Lightening Round since they lighten up the mood? So if your question is not answered, it’s likely just in the queue (if it’s off topic)
12:47 |
Comment From mtswWhich team is most likely to employ a novelty uniform the color of that stupid black/blue/white/gold dress? Is there some single-A team already calling people about this?
12:47 |
Dan Szymborski: Oh, a minor league team will totally do it
12:47 |
Comment From AaronPerhaps an obvious question, but I’d like to hear what you have to say… A run earned and a run saved are equal, correct?
12:48 |
Dan Szymborski: Roughly. But there are diminishing returns – a marginal run scored for a bad offense is slightly more valuable than a marginal run prevented by an excellent pitching staff. And vice-versa
12:49 |
Comment From ConThoughts on N. Feliz’s hold on the closer position in Texas? Think he does well this year?
12:49 |
Dan Szymborski: He has the most upside, but there’s a large rang of coutcomes
12:50 |
Comment From mtswWho is the real Caleb Joseph? Replacement level hitter with good defense, or Bartolo Colon-level hitter with good defense?
12:50 |
Dan Szymborski: He’s a below-average hitting catcher with solid defense. Above-replacement, but only a stopgap as a starter
12:51 |
Comment From ZQDo you buy Farnsworth’s big time expectations on Kang, based on his swing analysis?
12:52 |
Dan Szymborski: No. I think it’s a very slim reed to hang onto.
12:52 |
Comment From MJKWill Pedro Alvarez and Alex Hassan get 1B ratings this year?
12:52 |
Dan Szymborski: Haven’t done them yet.
12:52 |
Dan Szymborski: I don’t like answering questions about DMB that I haven’t yet considered.
12:52 |
Comment From ChrisBrad Miller or Chris Taylor?
12:53 |
Dan Szymborski: Miller, but it’s really close
12:53 |
Comment From mtswDoes ZiPS account for manager? Like does it nudge up a guy’s steals projection if his team hires Ned Yost?
12:53 |
Comment From GuestCan you identify an armbar in 14 seconds? Ronda Rousey is insane.
12:53 |
Comment From CardsFanJhonny Peralta’s plus 5 WAR an anomaly or can we expect something similar this year?
12:54 |
Dan Szymborski: I think 3-4 WAR is a more reasonable expectation
12:54 |
Comment From mtswIf that division 2 school that beat the Philllies in ST played in the majors how many games would they win in a season? 25ish?
12:54 |
Dan Szymborski: 30-35 I think. MLBers are the far right of the talent curve – as you go left, the number of players explodes
12:54 |
Comment From GSonsSonIs there a chance any of the college kids get a projection, being better than the Phillies and all?
12:55 |
Comment From mtswLoL and (especially) Dota2 are older than SC2. Competitive Dota has been huge for over a decade fwiw
12:55 |
Dan Szymborski: But full streaming only took off fairly recently
12:55 |
Dan Szymborski: And streaming — which brings in more money — has a significant effect on the esports community
12:55 |
Comment From GSonsSonThe Braves won’t really play EY2 in center, will they?
12:56 |
Dan Szymborski: They might. They signed Nick Markakis to a long-term contract after all
12:56 |
Comment From Guestsafe to say the Mariners won the Saunders for Happ trade?
12:56 |
Dan Szymborski: No. Saunders wasn’t injured until afterwards.
12:56 |
Dan Szymborski: At the time, there was the *risk* of injury, not the certainty of injury.
12:57 |
Dan Szymborski: Eating healthy doesn’t become a bad idea if a crazy wino stabs you while you’re buying kale at the grocery store
12:57 |
Comment From ZQThanks for the link to spreadsheet! For the TOP-LOW likelihoods: are those quintiles by WAR (including defense), OPS+, or other?
12:57 |
Comment From Forest GumpHave you ever beaten FTL? I can’t for the life of me beat that stupid game (on normal mode)

Comment From War2d2Hi Dan! Fantasy question: Both Zips and Steamer have Donaldson and Harper as putting up almost identical lines this year. I’m in a keeper league with escalating values. I can keep one of them (Donaldson would be a lot cheaper). Do you agree with Zips’s projections on this? For some reason I keep thinking Donaldson will crater and Harper will live up to the hype, but I’m not sure I’m willing to bet almost 2x the (pretend) money on it. Thanks!

Comment From mtswInstead of a points spread, could baseball have an innings spread to aid gambling? I.e. if the line was NYY -1 at BAL, the Baltimore side would win the bet if they were ahead at any point after the 8th inning.

I don’t get why the Cubs are giving up on Welington Castillo. He’s been better than Montero the last couple years and is younger and much cheaper.
The Cubs front office pretty clearly believes in pitch framing, an area where Montero is among the best if not the best while Castillo is perhaps the worst. Montero’s leadership and game-calling are also valuable.
Montero is nowhere near being one of the best pitch framers–much less being perhaps the best. Check the Baseball Prospectus leaderboards.
