ZIPs is projecting Phil Hughes to have the second highest WAR for all SP’s on the FG projections page. It projects him having a .76 BB/9. Other than last season (career 2.37 BB/9), why does ZIPs think his control will stay at that elite level?

Dan Szymborski: Ignore the WAR for now – there appears to be a FIP issue in which the FG calculated FIP for ZiPS on the player pages is drastically lowre than FG calculated FIP for ZiPS on the team previews.

Whats your feeling on the validity of using ZiPS to predict team performance? Have you tested whether it outperforms other team projections? What would you say the rough margin of error is, in games?

Dan Szymborski: That’s the reason I do simulations with error bars – ZiPS has the large mean win variance (as you expect from any method, PC or human). But what I care about is hitting the percentile and ZiPS does very good at it, i.e 20% of teams hitting their 80th percentile projection, only 10% of teams being 10th percentile and under, etc.

Dan Szymborski: More interesting, but I think Betts will get some positional flexibility. Morneau has some value as long as he’s in Colorado. Still not sure I do it.

I looked up Daric Barton’s numbers today (he’s on a spring invite with the Jays, who don’t really have a sure 1B). He’s got a 106 wRC+ away from Oakland, has posted strong OBPs and is on a team with enough power to go around, and the defense is always good. No platoon issue either (actually, reverse splits). Am I nuts for talking myself into this as a viable option?

Dan Szymborski: He’s interesting, but mainly because the Jays are rostering Smoak.

Hi Dan! Fantasy question: Both Zips and Steamer have Donaldson and Harper as putting up almost identical lines this year. I’m in a keeper league with escalating values. I can keep one of them (Donaldson would be a lot cheaper). Do you agree with Zips’s projections on this?
