Dashboard Section
In the player pages there’s now a new section called “Dashboard”, which will be the first one you see. It includes a number of the most widely used stats on the site and they are arranged to allow you to get a statistical sense of a player with a quick glance.
We’ve also done some behind the scenes work which should make stats pages load just a bit quicker, I hope.
We’ll probably be messing around with this section a little, so if you have any feedback, be sure to let us know!

This is fantastic. All of the core stats are right there beside each other, and when I want to delve further into a player I can worry about scrolling then. Absolutely great change.

Putting it at the bottom would kind of reduce the effectiveness of the whole not having to scroll thing

Outstanding. I especially like the layout for pitchers, having BABIP, LOB%, GB%, HR/FB, FIP and xFIP all on the same line is a beautiful thing.

Ideally I’d suggest they be sorted “best to worst” by default. For K% this will be descending. For BB% it would be ascending. If first click = best on top, that would save my mouse dozens of clicks per day. 😉

This is an awesome tool… great for looking up snapshot stats when arguing baseball particulars with friends or doing some light fantasy research. Keep up the good work guys, and thanks!
I would love to see tERA along with ERA/FIP/xFIP for pitchers, if that could fit. To me, I’d rather have tERA than FIP since FIP is really just a less advanced version of xFIP (i.e. not adjusted for hr rates), whereas tERA actually uses and/or weights differently several other components when coming up with an ERA equivalent.
For hitters, I can’t say there’s anything I would really change. It’d be nice to see batted ball types (gb%/fb%/ld%) in there as its own set of columns, but there’s a limited amount of space and I wouldn’t replace any of the stats up there right now just to include that info.
The dashboard is an excellent idea and improves what was already a great stats page. But I do have three suggested tweaks:
(1) Remove the hits column. With at-bats and batting average already provided, hits are not needed, and since this is a busy table, a little pruning would help.
(2) Flip the second and third set of data so that the first group with basic offensive data is immediately followed by the summation of that data with batting average, OBP and Slg — together those two groups are descriptive of each season. Then have the group off BB%, K%, ISO and BABIP, which are more useful than the first two group as predictive data.
(3) Remove the post-season row, which I find makes it more difficult to read the total line below it.

Are the Fan’s projections of BB% displayed incorrectly for anybody else?
When I look at Utley’s page, it says the fans projected a 17.6% BB rate on the dashboard, but if you click the tab on the player page for “Projections” it displays the correct rate. Coincidentally, 17.6% is the same as what the fans projected for Utley’s K%….maybe it’s displaying the K% twice?
Great idea. But I noticed in the dashboard section, under the “fans” projections, the BB% and K% are identical for each player. The BB% just copies whatever the K% was.
Justin Upton, for example, is now projected to have a BB% of 25.4%, identical to his projected K%.
If I scroll down to the “advanced” section, it shows that his fans-projected BB% was actually 10.6%.
Probably just a simple typo in whatever algorithm or spreadsheet operator you guys are using.
BB% for the fan projections should be fixed. Had K% in there twice for some reason.

SB aren’t terribly helpful unless either CS or stolen base success rate is shown as well.

Great layout for the key stats.
On the Pitch F/X tab, can we also get the x/y axis graph on pitch movement for pitchers for the entire year, rather than just game by game? Maybe use an average of the pitch movement or a 95 percentile graph?

My requests:
Hitters
– Move
– Remove H in favor of other stuff.
– Re-order the second and third sections.
– Remove the decimal place for BB%, K%, and UZR.
– Include some sort of xBABIP.
– Include the position adjustment in addition to UZR. Defense includes both.
– Worth considering HR/FB or GB% or something like that, but there’s not one thing I love like that.
– Age? Primary position?
Pitchers
– IP should be first.
– W/L/SV? Ugh, guess I’ll skip that section 😉
– How about RG (relief games) instead of the total games stat?
– ERA (with FIP/xFIP) should go next, then the specific skill measurements.
– Again, lose the decimal place on things like LOB%, GB%, even HR/FB. And BB/9, K/9, HR/9 are fine with one less decimal place. Maybe HR/FB and HR/9 can keep their precision, since the range is narrower than for other stats.
– WHIP would be nice for fantasy players, but it’s pretty overrated analytically.
– tERA would be a nice addition.
– How about total UZR of the team, as an indicator of how good of a defense he pitched in front of?
– BFP would be nice, although it’s a little redundant with IP.
I really like that you listed PAs and not ABs.
The one that really sticks out to me is “Age.” I know I’ve been beating this drum here for a few years, but that’s the one thing I find myself always looking for when reading your site. Its extremely important contextual info and by far the biggest omission.

xBABIP is the one stat that would be nice to see for hitters–LD%, GB%, FB% are the one stats that I look at a lot that aren’t here.
I think H could go, and CS would be nice.
And though it appears elsewhere, I think the decimal points Sky pointed out make the table busier without contributing a huge amount.
