Eno Sarris: I dunno. I mean, I’m excited, you’re excited, he just had elbow surgery last year and probably can’t throw more than 150 innings. I think James Paxton level is about right.

Eno Sarris: Just to like, pick up and eat? Emmenthaler, Gruyere — swiss.

Eno Sarris: I try not to snack since I eat sandwiches and drink beer.

Eno Sarris: He always was, but he’s more fantasy interesting this year. Still a final pitcher type guy. Have a casual over under bet on his ERA at 3.75 with Zimm.

Blue Jay Matt: Given the choice do you prefer prospects who have a high ceiling but low chance of making it or lower ceiling but almost certain to get there?

Eno Sarris: I go for floor.

WormsleyCommonGang: I’m getting married in May – and I can’t think of a song for the Mother/Son dance. Any ideas from you or these luders here?

Eno Sarris: We did Talking Heads because of the Eno connection and the fact that both sets of parents liked them. Dunno if you have that type of music available to you with your parents.

ChicagoCardinal: Eno, what would you put the chances of Luis Castillo becoming a top 10 pitcher at? I know Sporer thinks he’s top 5 now, but I’m looking for a clear-eyed view.

Eno Sarris: Biggest problem is command. Might have some fits and starts like a Carrasco type, that’s the type of comp I see.

Danny: Is Gary Sanchez the best catcher in baseball?

Eno Sarris: Offensively, yes.

Eno Sarris: First four I guess. Jeez.

WormsleyCommonGang: Eddie Rosario – you a believer in his ability to be a top LF this year in fantasy?

Eno Sarris: He actually added launch angle late in the season, among league leaders in added angle. Something about his approach leaves me cold, but he seems athletic and has a job…

2-D: If you called the shots how would you handle Josh Hader this season?

Eno Sarris: Start him.

Craig: As currently constructed, who wins a 7 game series, Yankees or Astros?

Eno Sarris: All of us. And, if they all healthy, maybe the Yankees?

Rob: Dustin Fowler had that horrible knee injury last year.  Being that he is fast, if he gets the cf job, what kind of sb totals are realistic?

Eno Sarris: He just hasn’t been such a volume guy in the minors. I’d be conservative and give him 20.

Shawn: Which fringe contender can help themselves the most by signing one of the big FA? I’m thinking Mil or Win w/ Darvish or Arrieta

Eno Sarris: Or Minnesota, or is that “win” maybe. Yeah the Twins made it far without a staff, a pitcher would be good, but so would like three more.

Eno Sarris: I mean, yes, they did have Trevor Hildenberger.

Tears for Fears: Would the Pirates be open to trading Felipe Rivero or do you think he stays put for now?

Eno Sarris: For a ransom maybe. But, judging from their returns on their deals, they went for guys that are in the bigs or close and have years of control. Seeing those Steamer projections for cole and Musgrove, I think they are high fiving that they just basically got Cole back plus a third baseman and more years of control. Just a guess.

WormsleyCommonGang: When does ATC come out?

Eno Sarris: Soon. They’re good projections. I have an early run of the AL in my hands now.

Mel: Do you foresee a players strike?

Eno Sarris: I foresee strife, dunno about strike.

Jimmy: We know there are a lot of factors slowing down this year’s free agent market.  One theory I have not read about on this sight is perhaps the escalating asking prices are an economic bubble of sorts, and we are seeing that bubble start to deflate.  Thoughts?

Eno Sarris: Is this because they’re worried about TV deals? I think they just signed TV deals. Dunno, the income part of the equation doesn’t seem to have any warts, it’s mostly just the paying out part.

Eno Sarris: Aaron Sanchez could do it at any time. Blake Snell showed some stuff late last season with the slider. Lance McCullers of course.

Eno Sarris: I’d like to reflect the risk by signing him to 5-7 bucks or so.

Eno Sarris: More or less the same.

Eno Sarris: Plus plate discipline, could be elite. Average power. Could be a CF while young. This is a good player.

Rob: I did my first NFBC 50 round draft and hold last year and did not do well.  What do you think is the optimal batter/pitcher split?  I went with very few bench bats thinking that if my offense wasn’t good, replacment batters wouldn’t help that much.   They were not good.  Bad strategy?

Eno Sarris: I think you probably need to spend five ‘lottery’ type picks on bench bats. Guys that could play their best and take a spot from a starter. Otherwise, yeah, my bench would be 75% arms too.

Llewelyn: The current giants team reminds me a little bit of the 2010 team. Mostly washed up veterans but also a pretty solid collection of established talent. Then again that team was seemingly such an anomaly

Scruffy-Looking Nerf Hurler: Was just told by my medical professional to start taking something for my reflux. I know you’ve got your issues with it, do you jut drink beer anyways? Did you change how many and what kinds?  I need help!!

Eno Sarris: I’m still not into taking a pill daily. You’re suppressing your proton pumps all over your body, not just in your gut. I’ve been taking some apple cider vinegar before big meals, and taking nexium right before bedtime on days where I know I strayed, and then otherwise staying away from raw onions, garlic, tomato sauce, cheese too late, and really fatty and oily foods. It’s been a little better.

Eno Sarris: On the beer front, I’m careful with the bigger beers — alcohol and calories — and mostly drinking lighter beers.

Eno Sarris: Pretty amazing. Great music, funny comedy, really good beers, met up with cool people.

Brad: How are you approaching pitching last year?  Seems like the rage is the getting kershaw/sale/scherzer/kluber really early.  I thought your strategy of getting two in your tier 2 last year will work well again this year.

Eno Sarris: I might want to get three in the top two tiers, which might mean getting one in the third round, but I’m still a little nervous about spending a second round pick on an ace over 30.

Ryan: Your thoughts on the 4 that got into the HOF yesterday?

Eno Sarris: I know the arguments against Hoffman. They make sense. But I’m not sure we’re amazing at valuing relievers, Hoffman is one of the best relievers of all time, and we don’t have a ton of relievers in the hall. I’m fine with Hoffman.

Eno Sarris: Chipper? I grew up in Atlanta for a big part of my childhood. Chipper was amazing. I remember being excited for him before he arrived. I remember debating if he could play short. I remember being devastated about the knee injuries. I remember being awestruck that he could do the same thing from either side of the plate. He, and Vlad, were one of the first players that I remember actually thinking, while they were playing, that these guys were Hall of Famers.

Eno Sarris: Thome? Thome thwocks taters. I’m a little surprised about him being a first ballot guy, but I think that’s as much about the ballot around him, and all the arguments about steroids, as it is about his actual accomplishments.

Guest: To avoid luxury tax problems, would a player or team be less likely to make a contract for more money over a really long time.  Prior to signing A Jackson, say Cain to SF for 25 years at 4 million per year?

Eno Sarris: I think the team would be into it. The player, not so much. Inflation erodes a lot of the value of those later years.

Zach: Ohtani vs McCullers…may be facing this decision in a keeper league if owner at pick 1.01 goes off the board. Where do you stand wrt to two talented, yet risky, right handed AL West arms?

Eno Sarris: I love McCullers and I guess I’ll take the wild card here. McCullers just about as injury risky.

Scott: Is Cueto a bounce-back candidate for this year? Do we have a definitive answer on his struggles last year?

Eno Sarris: Blister, forearm issues. I think it was health. Projections never loved him because he does things that don’t show up (deception, stop the running game), so I like him better than his projections.

Luke : Thoughts on pickles as a sandwich moistener? I’m a sauce-aholic but they aren’t very healthy and I tried a ciabatta, turkey, salami, gouda, pickles sandwich and damn! Very tasty and not dry.

Eno Sarris: I’m a fan. I know some people HATE pickles, though.

BK: Keeping playing time in mind, who has a better season: Albies or Acuna?

Eno Sarris: I’ll take Albies.

Eno Sarris: Betts.

Eno Sarris: What an interesting comp. He does have a boring high velocity fastball, don’t know the spin on Mitchell, though. Chatwood has high spin on his 4s. I think I’d like Mitchell to throw the breaker a ton.

Justino: Who is the most overrated prospect currently?

Eno Sarris: on that BA list, I don’t know that I’m feeling Mitch Keller as the 12th-best prospect. Seemed a little stiff, and people hit his curve in the AFL.

Eno Sarris: Was just looking at him. There’s 20th-ranked downside, but the price makes him interesting. Particularly in ottoneu, where you can take three shots at trying to find one catcher.

Tony Eusebio: Do you think the A’s young core is exciting/close enough where they could justify trying to buy low on Cain? They should have some pitching help on the way this year too

Eno Sarris: Piece on The Athletic today says that their pitching is what needs the most help. I know guys are coming, but they could spend on veteran pitching in this market and get the most bang for their buck.

hscer: most home runs hit by Ruth and Gehrig combined in one season was 92. how good a chance for Judge/Stanton (including health and/or assuming ~150 games each)? next best for Ruth Gehrig was 90, 81, 81 btw

Eno Sarris: Should be able to at least rank third on that list, unless the ball changes again.

Eno Sarris: Man I love watching him hit. I can’t believe the pop ups will torpedo his line.

Steve Jessop: Could the Yankees infield be a nightmare dragging down that whole team or do you have faith in all those unproven talents?

Eno Sarris: The gloves should all be okay and they have proven bats in other spots.

Inquisitive A’s Fan: What would be a better deal for Oakland? 4 years of Cain or 4 years of either Cobb or Lynn? Figure the dollars are”fair” with any of the contracts.

Eno Sarris: I think it’s Lynn actually! Fowler and Boog should be enough in center. Maybe it’s Cain. But Cain should cost more and I know that’s not in this, it has to be.

Plato: Is it time to jump off the Daniel Norris train or do you think he’ll figure it out relatively soon?

Eno Sarris: No idea if he will, but the stuff is still there. If we’re talking dollar days I’m still into it.

John: Eno, what’s the deal with baseball twitter trying to rehab Barry Bonds public reputation? I understand it’s HOF season so he’s gonna be talked about, but there sure is a lot of “if you don’t love Barry you are an old grump” out there for a dude very credibly accused of years of spousal abuse.

Eno Sarris: Asked the dude for an interview and he asked me if I had a check for him. He’s a problematic dude. I think most people arguing for him are trying to separate the play from the man. It’s tough to make an argument for keeping Schilling out based on his views and actions and for putting Bonds in, though.

toki: Is a Swanson La Stella comp off base?  Other than the k/bb difference it seems fair.

Eno Sarris: I would think I should ask that of you, not the other way around. You people are a source of great joy. I suppose if I was picking the nits, I could say that, you know I read the comments, if you have a complaint about something, it’s better if it comes with a suggestion about how to do it another way than just complaining. But I have no complaints.

Dr. Funk: So are you high on Flaherty and Weaver?   You’ve written interesting pieces on both which seem to to indicate that.

Eno Sarris: Yes. Flaherty less so because his fastball lacks movement and is only okay in velocity, but yes I’m interested in both guys. If Weaver’s curve gets better, watch out.

Al Gone Quinn: With the 1/31 Ottoneu cut deadline looming, I’m always fighting that impulse to cut the final 3 or 4 guys from my roster to free up auction budget. Do you use any tricks to motivate yourself to wield the axe?

Eno Sarris: I think you should cut. I’ve been struggling with a few players and I think I’ll just do it.

Sonny: Passan’s article made me rethink my stance on team signings. I’ve always advocated for big market teams to sign players bc the money paid out is mostly irrelevant to them, but the fetishizing of Oak, TB, etc kind of comes to an end. Can MLB reach 55% of revenue to players with the current ownership cohort?

Eno Sarris: Not under the current rules/CBA.

Johnny5Alive: whats your thoughts on rivero as a closer vs. renfroe’s pop? nl only league, can trade a $10 rivero for a $5 renfroe.  Would then keep a $27 doolittle and a $5 morrow for saves

Eno Sarris: Good lord that seems like a lot for Doolittle?

capconstrained: How would you weight the bust/breakout cases for Jordan Montgomery?  He’s all about deception so I worry that it could go away but his command was not great last year and if he improved it he could become a 4-5 WAR pitcher.

Eno Sarris: I like his floor. Maybe like 50% about the same, 20% breakout, 30% bust?

Eno Sarris: No idea if I need to buy LCD tickets the minute they go on sale, but the Berkely greek is a great venue and my wife says she wants to go, so you may miss me for a second here.

stever20: what do you expect from Kluber this year?  Does his LDS performance with the possibility of injury concern you a lot?

Eno Sarris: I think there’s a decent amount of collapse possibility for a 30+ year old pitcher, and then one who has had fastball issues in the past makes me a bit nervous, but I’ve been too early on Kluber decline in the past, so I’ll shut my mouth I guess.

No, Your Name: Feels like The giants have provided the most entertainment this offseason?  Both for the Haters and the supporters?  Is that worth anything on its own?

Eno Sarris: The shoulder thing bothers me. Otherwise, he’s perennially on my list because of the plus slider, good velocity, and great change by move and velo.

Corey: Do you have any 2018 Zack Godley/Jimmy Nelson pick?

Eno Sarris: Godley. Shoulders suck.

Dr. Funk: Did you happen to read the baseball prospectus article on Dominic Leone? It showed how he increased his spin rate on all his pitches in 2017.  I’m still trying to figure out the spin rate stuff. How does one have across the board increase in spin? Is spin rate the only factor for increase vertical separation on a fourseamer? Was 2017 for real based on spin alone?

Eno Sarris: Year to year spin is very sticky, but there’s also a Cubs Related article that says that it’s related to extension. So perhaps he increased his extension and changed his mechanics some? Otherwise, I’ve seen spin related to health, so maybe it was health.

Morbo: Eno I’m traveling to the Bay Area and Santa Rosa next week. Any recommendations for things to do? (Other than the Pliny the Younger release at Russian River, already planning on going)

Eno Sarris: Too cold for actually going into the Russian River, so go to Henhouse Brewing instead. Fieldwork, Rare Barrel, Cellarmaker, Almanac are the class of the area IMO. I love walking the Mission (16th, 17th, 18th between Dolores and Mission, up and down) and love Papalote burritos (higher up in the mission). Toronado’s (beer) and Rosamunde (sausage next door) in Haight Ashbury, say what’s up to my pops. I love the Botanical Gardens and museums in the park. Walking the Embarcadero is fun.

Dummy: I am crazy to trade DMurph and Rendon for Trea Turner in dynasty? DMurph is a utility bat for me (Altuve at 2B) and Rendon would be replaced by Devers.

Eno Sarris: Trea Turner is like a top three player this year in fantasy.

botchatheny: if you refrained from drinking alcohol for the month of january what would be the first beer you’d have on 2/1 (that mere mortals could find)?

Eno Sarris: Maybe some Old Rasputin? Great stout, everywhere.

Bert: Does Greg Bird hit like an above average 1st basemen this year?

Eno Sarris: Yes.

Ridley: If you had to pick one player to have an Aaron Judge-like/light breakout year based solely on Statcast data, who would it be?

Eno Sarris: Maikel Franco raised his launch angle to 16 degrees in the second half, I still can’t quit him.

Eno Sarris: I did for two weeks, did a hard reset, blew on the cartridge, and then stopped. Have been good since.

Anthony: How do you feel about Haniger? 2017 the norm, late bloomer gives him more upside, or regression candidate?

Eno Sarris: The whole thing. League average type player, and that’s a win.

He Hate Me: What are the odds SFG stay under the tax bar? They are pushing right up to it and leaving zero wiggle room for in-season maneuvering.

Slapshot: Was doing some cut deadline research and found a Jeff Zimmerman article that argued that catcher was the only position with positional scarcity in standard roster leagues (i.e. 2 catcher leagues).  Would you agree with him?  And if so, who would you consider as keepers below the obvious top flight guys like Posey, Contreras, and Sanchez?

Eno Sarris: In most leagues (less than 15 teams, mixed, one catcher), yes I’d just take the best bat repeatedly. Later in the auction, you may have to make a choice based on team construct, but early you take the best bat.

Sick Day: 2. What does Eno’s perfect grilled cheese contain and is the inclusion of soup required?

Eno Sarris: Gruyere, and then a cheese or two more, love getting like three cheeses in there. Sourdough. I’ll allow for ketchup — I have two boys after all — but I don’t require soup.

Eno Sarris: I like Godley a lot but the second two.

Anthony: So, I know research on slider effectiveness is fuzzy from your piece on Flaherty, but the video of the three top sliders was shockingly different. Do you have any untested hypotheses about what makes a slider effective?

Eno Sarris: The spin rates are all over the place on sliders, I think it’s hard to pick them up, statcast drops every ninth one or so. I think the continuum between cutter, power slider, slider, hard curve, and curve is more fluid than the one between sinker and changeup and splitter. I think breaking balls are the real feel pitch. And though I’ve defined breaker movement off the fastball, I’m pretty sure that it’s interaction with the fastball that’s somehow missing.

Anthony: Where would you rank Carlos Martinez among the league’s best pitchers IRL?

Eno Sarris: Easily top 30, probably top 20. Ace.

Eno Sarris: Couple things going on here. Some evidence that the park makes them worse on the road — I found that they saw more fastballs and swung more often than average at home, and that this carried over to the road and made them susceptible to offspeed stuff — so that might be it. Or maybe we penalize them too much for their park, given that it does weird things to them as players.

Eno Sarris: I think this is who he is. Maybe he takes to the OF and is a better defender there, but this is his bat.

Scott: When researching SP, what are the best factors/qualities to look at for signs of regression or growth?

Eno Sarris: Fastball velocity, swinging strike rate, pitching mix change.

Patty L: No need to post, but you may try taking the proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) every other day or every third day- something like that. Generally the 40 mg tabs are A LOT better than 20 or 10 mg. Nexium is a PPI by the way. The key with reflux is the diet, which you mentioned, but sometimes that is pretty hard to adhere to. Having just a low level of the PPI (ie taking 2-3 times per week) should help out a lot. It will be cheaper to do 40 mg tab in that dosing interval than daily 10 or 20mg tab. Sorry for long suggestion but as a physician who has GERD and loves been I wanted to share.

Eno Sarris: Interesting. I may end up doing something like this, I may be doing it in practice. I end up taking a pill once a week or so.

Eno Sarris: Whatever conversations they’re having are probably still ongoing. Mostly with the Marlins I’d guess.

Actual Nutrition Coach: Acid reflux is the result of gasses building up in the digestive tract and forcing stomach acid up into the esophagus. To get rid of it, you have to change your diet and strengthen your gut. Digestive enzymes can help. But long-term it’s cutting down on the food and drink (**beer, sorry bro) that are causing the gut irritation and excessive fermentation. Hunky Dory: Hey Eno, I go to an Ivy League school.  How much would you say your swanky Stanford degree has helped you get to where you are today?

Eno Sarris: Once I’ve gotten to an interview, I can’t remember not getting the job. And I know I’ve gotten interviews because of the degree. I once printed my resume on a piece of paper from my wife’s house without looking at the reverse side, and it had a story her sister wrote about a first kiss on the back, and I still got the job (Kumon). I’m sure the degree helped a lot, though it’s funny, I spent the first few years there failing my way through an econ degree, and only found myself when I switched to psych/creative writing/communications/art history and started working at the Daily.

Eno Sarris: I think if one of my sons comes to me with a cogent plan that doesn’t include college, I might give it the go ahead. My wife, though…
