dammint eno, i have been working so much this past few weeks i cant enjoy your chats! i just wanted to say hi before i have to go back to work… and do these chats continue after the WS?

12:01
Eno Sarris: I’ll do some chatting! From the winter meetings, and regularly on Thursday, as long as people show up.

12:02
Comment From Terrible Ted
Good, I hate fake time.

12:02
Eno Sarris: It’s the worst.

12:02
Comment From Marty
What time is it?! Real time! Hoo!

12:03
Eno Sarris: Speaking of which, I think the guy is funny and don’t agree with everything he says. People want things to be so black and white, and they aren’t.

12:03
Comment From Bruce
What do players talk about with the opposing 1st basement when they get there?

12:03
Eno Sarris: “Totally squibbed that. I’ll take it.”

or

“Say what’s up to your wife for me.”

12:04
Comment From David
At what point will managers learn not to trust their starters the third time through the order in a meaningful game? I mean it’s one thing if he’s been truly dominant, but otherwise????

12:04
Eno Sarris: You burn up your bullpen pretty fast, and I guess they sort of live in fear of having to pitch a guy that’s not their best bullpen guy…

12:05
Comment From Guest
What do you make of Strickland’s comments?

12:06
Eno Sarris: Young guy, pumped up, seeing red because he just gave up yet another homer, seeing a guy yelling in Spanish, reacting poorly.

12:06
Comment From David
Worrying about burning your bullpen out is one thing with 100 games remaining. But in the postseason, every game should be treated as do or die. Especially if the next day is an off day!

12:07
Eno Sarris: Oh I agree, but if you’re getting one out each from guys like Lopez, then maybe you’re worried about keeping more than just Tim Lincecum in the back of the pen.

12:07
Comment From Tom
So excited for the new TV On The Radio album …

12:07
Eno Sarris: Yeah I think I heard a new song today and it was great.

12:07
Comment From Guest
Will you be sad if your Giants lose, or happy that the Royals won since you’ve got a few recent WSs under your belt? I’m a Cubs fan, so I can’t really relate to how it feels to have won a few times recently,; if it were us v. the Royals I’d want to win 100 games out of 7.

12:08
Eno Sarris: I’ve lost “my” teams at this point. I root for players I like, interviews I like. And it’s not even cut and dry in this Series. Alex Gordon was one of the classiest, most insightful and down to earth interviews I’ve ever done. Really like that dude.

12:08
Comment From zoe
that’s the beauty of spanish, everything sounds so passionate

12:08
Comment From George
Considering A) How bad he’s been in the postseason, B) The fact that he didn’t come up with the “core” of the Giants’ dynasty teams and C) His possible hot-headedness, how awkward would it have been if the Giants really had to defend Strickland in a brawl?

12:08
Eno Sarris: Did you watch Posey just sorta stand there like WTF

12:08
Comment From Ron
Did you get a sense of how bad Coco Crisp’s neck injury hurt him last season? Def got the feeling he should’ve been on the DL the entire second half, but kept on keeping on because the team was floundering so much.

12:09
Eno Sarris: The play that led to reinjuring the neck, a big near home run rob, looked like it was going to be a concussion. So yeah I think it was decently bad. That said, he seems to be an injury-riddled guy, and is in the age where that’s an issue.

12:09
Comment From zoe
rise and shine eno

12:09
Eno Sarris: yeah the worst part was I just basically nodded off in the ready position at my computer. newborns are gremlins man.

12:10
Comment From Orlando
Freddie Freeman or Anthony Rizzo for the next five years in a points league?

12:10
Eno Sarris: I’m excited to see a .290/.380/.500+ with 30+ bombs season from Rizzo. I think Freeman could maybe maybe do that once, but I think Rizzo’s got more power.

12:10
Comment From riot

Whats up with that Marlins guy at Kauffman? will he be at AT&T?

12:11
Eno Sarris: I think he actually gets some help on his tickets from the Marlins, which seems like it should be a bigger story than it is. Is that cool? And what was up with the ST

12:12
Eno Sarris: I think he actually gets help on his tickets from the Marlins, which should be a bigger story than it is. Like the Strange Music t-shirt guy that stood up the whole game. Was he selling something? Lame if so. And super lame for the guy behind him.

Any idea on what the Rays plan to do with Nick Franklin next year? Thanks!

12:15
Eno Sarris: The name I keep seeing associated with him is Ben Zobrist. So I guess he plays all over the place and gets 400-500 PA? What I really can’t wait to see is his strikeout rate. It’s kind of been all over the place.

12:15
Comment From Pale Hose
Eno – Do you get a sense of how players feel about things they are really bad at? As an example, does a guy like Mike Morse really want to play left field?

12:17
Eno Sarris: I did want to ask Morse about Fuld’s idea of switching left and right fielders depending on the handedness of the batter. That would have basically been asking him how he feels about being publicly hidden from his faults. But the problem with asking them things like this is that they all have their own brands, for lack of a better word. If they admit they don’t like playing left field, all of a sudden the next team he signs with will want to pay him less because they aren’t “sure he can play left’ which is just code for we want to pay you less.

12:17
Comment From David
On the flip side is it poetic justice that given how the Giants advanced beyond the DS and CS in some part because of baffling bullpen decisions on the part of Williams and Matheny, that they drop a game in the WS for a similar reason?

12:18
Eno Sarris: You’re of the school that Strickland should be an emergency guy and that Romo should have come in earlier? Could work, but you can’t get more than four outs from Romo anyway.

12:18
Comment From Prison Mike
Can Jeff Samardzija keep up this new level of success? Or is he more of a top 20-40 starter, rather than a top 20? Thanks

12:18
Eno Sarris: I think his command waxes and wanes, and without a pitcher’s count, he can’t throw his best weapon, the splitter. So yeah he’ll have blowups between his mostly excellent work.

12:18
Comment From LarryA
Joe Panik and Y.Ventura look 14 years old. I dont think they should be around alcohol in any celebration

12:18
Eno Sarris: I’ll drink their beers for them.

Comment From Sam
Eno! Who’s next to 3000 hits?

12:19
Eno Sarris: Listen, it’s not Mookie Betts. But it will be someone like him. Someone that strikes out less often than he walks, someone that stays healthy, has a little power, and starts out with a good amount of speed.

12:19
Comment From Bruce
Is it possible that pitch sequencing is the next big Sabr topic, similar to haw framing has exploded the past couple of years.

12:19
Eno Sarris: I’m pretty sure teams are already hard at work on this and know a lot more about this than we do. it’s just how it goes.

12:19
Comment From Robert
How big of a bounceback are you expecting from Chris Davis? That BABIP…

12:20

Are you dressing up for Halloween?

12:21
Eno Sarris: Man I’ve had some great costumes. i was Bob Ross once and people lost their stuff. Kenny G had a whole subway train chanting “kenny G! Kenny G!” as I serenaded my wife with my smooth alto sax. I was a great Disco Stu. But I’ve mellowed a bit. This year, my kid is going to be an awesome astronaut, with the helmet and everything, and I’m going to be the guy watching out for him.

Shortly after our chat last week, in which I described my feelings re: having “made it” not quite being what I had hoped, and you responded that you felt similarly, Cistulli tweetered this moving insight: “Among life’s more predictable disappointments: to be constantly motivated by a carrot at the end of a stick and then, upon one day apprehending it successfully, to find that it’s a carrot.” Thanks, Cistulli; I’ll miss NotGraphs.

You mentioned on the podcast about the reason for Chris Davis’ 1 AB in 2015 Steamer Projections. How many players are like that (real roles but poor projected ABs) and when would that be fixed?

12:24

Is Corey Dickerson for real or will his ADP just be wayyyy too ballooned next year?

12:26

Lookin for platooners next year as mentioned – want guys that overall will not be 10 team mixed worthy (or lower end), but 2 of em v righties = top player. Seth Smith, Doodah, Panda, Seager are some examples. Thoughts on them? Any other guys I should research?

12:27
Eno Sarris: I want Duda there. Seager will probably cost you like a starter, but if not, sure, him. Smith… that park… that sort of year. Nah.

How will the impending drought effect all the socal breweries? cant be good

12:29
Eno Sarris: yeah, we’re experiencing a drought, not unprecedented levels, but it’s there. There was already a hop shortage before too. I could see more session pales (less hops cost), or maybe stouts and belgian styles, or goses, will get more popular as breweries try to diversity and cut hops cost.

The Fangraphs community, regarding the continued postseason success of the Royals.

12:30
Eno Sarris: Eh, I think it’s pretty interesting actually. I mean, we don’t have to reconsider everything we’ve ever thought because one wild card team went on a run. But it’s a good reminder that all you have to do is get in to the postseason.

12:30
Comment From 34
The A’s trio seems really interesting — Robertson, Olson, Powell. Especially Powell, since I’m starting to begin a weird fascination with him.

Comment From Locke
Best current player comp for Rusney Castillo heading into next season?

12:31
Eno Sarris: I hate to use a fellow countryman, but from Castillo I’m getting a more powerful Leonys Martin vibe. Not great plate discipline, good defense. Ball seems to come off his bat with more sting though.

12:31
Comment From Gila Monster
Are you buying into Zack Wheeler as as post-hype sleeper? He has an elite fastball, sinker, and curveball with an slightly below average slider. Doesn’t really have a change, but the curve does have nice reverse platoon splits.

12:32
Eno Sarris: yeah I wish he had that change, but it’s all there for him. You can see the role command plays in strikeouts with him. As he improved his command, all the whiff rates on his pitches went up.

12:32
Comment From Pale Hose
Steamer is going all in on Ben Revere’s power (3 HR). Are you buying the power surge?

12:32

Re 3000 hits: A-Rod at 2939, Ichiro 2844, Beltre 2604, Pujols 2519

12:33
Eno Sarris: Gah. I guess it’s A-Rod. I do think he has 61 hits left in his career. Ichiro seems done. Beltre could do it, and the Angels are hoping on hope that Pujols gets there, four years from now.

12:34
Comment From John
What do you expect from Lorenzo Cain in 2015?

12:35
Eno Sarris: A little positive regression in power and patience, negative regression in batted ball luck and speed. If he can stay healthy, maybe .275/8/23?

12:35
Comment From mtsw
Given enormous contracts given to Cuban players right now, think teams will also start looking to Japan for position player talent more?

12:36
Eno Sarris: It takes a successful guy to create copycats. I am a little worried about Castillo and Guerrero myself. My money is on those guys being the crest of the wave.

12:36
Comment From Locke
With JJ Hardy being signed to an extension by Baltimore does this close the door on Machado ever moving back to SS?

Hey Eno — my wife and I are having twins next month. We’ll be first-time parents. How much trouble are we in?

Eno Sarris: McHugh….. Fiers Shoemaker

12:37

Think MLB is looking at two basically mediocre teams meeting in the World Series, combined with their lowest-ever WS ratings and considering whether to make it more disadvantageous to be a wild-card team in the playoffs going forward?

12:38
Eno Sarris: Eh, it was a decent postseason on the way in and if the Royals win, they can trumpet parity to the wind. I think some of the decisions they made about when and where to air games were iffy (workday postseason games on FS1, for example). I’m a proponent of a three-game wild card series, which would hurt the wild card teams a little more and also make it more likely that the better team comes out of that mini-series.

12:38
Comment From LarryA
Is there an easy way to say- if player X hit 30 HRs in 2002, its equivalent to Y in 2014? (in regards to league average)

12:39
Eno Sarris: Could you do a rough guess by taking the HR/G counts in each year and then using them to make a multiplier for your respective homer counts?

12:39
Comment From nerd
Are we underestimating the negative effects of strikeouts to hitters? Given the importance of sequencing it seems we’d be able to construct a team where it’s far more likely to create more “lucky” sequences so long as we have high contact speedsters (totals) or high contact flyball guys (a’s) who avoid the double pay. Linear weights accounts for averages in terms of valuing strikeouts, homers, etc. But doesn’t account for individual team construction that seeks to create better sequencing.

12:39
Eno Sarris: Yes I believe that perhaps contact rate is underrated, particularly in a short series. Balls in play = lotto tickets. The most lotto tickets you have, the better.

12:40
Comment From Brian
Just curious – Why are the Royals slightly favored by FG to win the WS even though the series is tied and going to SF?

12:40
Eno Sarris: They were favored coming in by the projections, I guess.

12:40
Comment From Guest
Eno, the Orioles have like 6 pitchers who are basically the same guy (decent and fairly cheap). would it be wise to trade one or more of them and go after Lester or Scherzer?

12:41
Eno Sarris: The other idea was tandem starters, which is super fun too. Do they have the money for an ace? I’ve said all along that I think Toronto and Baltimore could benefit from an ace pushing everyone down a notch behind them.

12:41
Comment From David
Actually I’m of the school of thought that Lopez should have come in to face Hosmer rather than let Peavy walk him. That shifts everyone else back one spot in the SF bullpen, and who knows what plays out?

12:41
Eno Sarris: Also a good point. Peavy should have been on a shorter leash, yes. Our house was saying to take him out after the second.

12:42
Comment From Terrible Ted
Arenado or Pujols at UTL in a keep forever, competitive now team?

12:43
Comment From 34
Do you get the impression that hitting coaches matter much? Does a top tier guy do that much better of a job than a lower tier?

12:44
Eno Sarris: From the research I’ve seen, they can have a minor impact on the patience or aggressiveness of a team. A good one probably gets his team to take .1 more pitches per plate appearance and maybe swing at one or two fewer balls outside the zone a game. That can matter, of course.

12:44
Comment From Tom
Lance Lynn moving forward – top tier pitcher?

12:44
Eno Sarris: I’m just not buying it. His numbers against lefties are bad. Real bad. Like he barely strikes out more guys than he walks. I have to see that as coming back to bite him eventually.

12:44
Comment From Rated Rookie
What are your thoughts about these imperfect OF and or MI options for 2015: Danny Santana, Jonathan Schoop and Brett Lawrie? I have them all at prices that makes hoping for more, realistic.

12:45
Eno Sarris: Lawrie is the one I want. I prefer his plate discipline, he’s shown more power than the other two. I know about the injuries… but Santana is going to regress in my eyes. Schoop could progress but the k/BB is scary.

12:45
Comment From Matt
What kind of car did you hit 220mph in?

12:45
Eno Sarris: Just a dinky Volkswagen. Germany is kinda great.

12:45

Foot race: Mike Morse or Billy Butler?

12:46
Eno Sarris: Morse runs like he’s in molasses, Butler runs like he’s got a parachute on. I’ll take the guy that looks like he should be faster in Morse, but I wonder how I’d do against them.

The way not to approach Hunter Strickland the next time he loses his temper.

12:47
Comment From Guest
You should try to talk to Petit about having a deceptive delivery. I remember when came back last year, I remember Kevin Goldstein saying he had one of the most deceptive deliveries, especially on the curveball from years and years ago.

12:47
Eno Sarris: Yeah I got some comments that bordered on that from Javy Lopez, but it’s a bit hard with Petit. Maybe with my buddy translating, during the regular season.

12:47
Comment From Guest
The poor ws ratings prolly has more to do with market size.

12:48
Eno Sarris: Is SF really that small of a market though? Maybe it’s market size of KC plus the excellence fatigue in SF.

12:48
Comment From Brian
Mediocre teams don’t make it to the World Series.

12:48
Eno Sarris: Disagree with this one. The more teams you let in, the more likely it’s going to happen. First time neither team in the world series won 90 games…

12:49
Comment From Roger Dodger
I was arguing with a guy at work yesterday about football and basketball players versus baseball players. He said all the athletic guys would rather play football or basketball and would be bored with baseball. I said there’s no offensive lineman in the world who could play shortstop. A lot of quarterbacks were also pitchers, and perhaps a lot of WRs / RBs / DBs could also play baseball (like Deion), but otherwise, football players trying to play baseball would be screwed. Am I right?

12:50
Eno Sarris: The QB/WR/TE pitcher thing (threw TE in for Samardzija) could be real, but yeah, different skills. Now, basketball players are tall and lanky and coordinated in similar ways… Didn’t work for Jordan, but you have to pretend Jordan played baseball all the way from the beginning, got all the same coaching and so on.

Should all major league teams have a designated burner like Terrance Gore ready for the September roster expansions? It seems like there should be plenty of guys available in the minors if they don’t have to hit or field.

12:50
Eno Sarris: Quiintin Berry!

12:51
Comment From mtsw
Do guys who swing a lot and don’t take many pitches (Adam Jones) generate a smaller times-through-the-order penalty for pitchers they face? Seems intuitive if theory behind TTTO penalty is based on adjusting to the pitcher’s arsenal and delivery.

12:51
Eno Sarris: If your entire team was made of Adam Joneses, yeah at some point the other team could leave their pitchers in longer.

12:51
Comment From Pepeshady
If the mediocre wildcard teams in the WS were the NYY and CHC, nobody’d be talking about bad TV ratings. It’s all about the teams, not records.

12:51
Comment From Guest
Who is the closer of Toronto’s future? And what do you think Aaron Sanchez’s role will be next season?

12:52
Eno Sarris: I think they put Sanchez and Norris in a battle, hope that one of them can be a number two to Stroman’s number one… and then I kinda like that team. I don’t know why people are so down on them. A targeted infield acquisition and a little bit of luck between their three young outfielders could make that team hum.

ok, great, I can also prob take one lefty mashing platooner in OF – thoughts on k davis and ozuna?

Please tell me there’s someone worth rooting for on the Royals. I grew up in Chicago, am a Cubs fan, and a series of unfortunate events have led me to live in NorCal (which is truly awful). I’m sick of the Giants, and I want a team to root for, but the Moose/Hoss thing cools me off on Le Roi. Is Cain a cool dude? He seems like a cool dude in TV blurbs.

12:57
Eno Sarris: Of course there is. Gordon is awesome. Butler is goofy. Shields is cool. The Royals haven’t won in forever.

12:57
Comment From Xolo
Given Bud Black’s love of platoons, should the Padres go after Adam Lind for first base (and platoon him with probably Tommy Medica)?

12:58

Eno Sarris: I did debate milking my alpacas before coming to this chat. I’ve been in plenty of urban circles on both coasts where it seemed impossible that anyone anywhere cared about baseball. But then you find the baseball crowds and it seems everyone cares. People run in different circles, and I think there are plenty of die hard sports fans on the west coast.

Something I’ve always been curious about is how much players take into account location when they are a free agent? I mean if I was a decently well played baseball player, I would probably have to earn 25% more to live in Kansas City over San Francisco. The most and least desirable respectively cities to live in that have a baseball team.

Eno Sarris: I think the first free agent contract is all about money. Then, when you’re Tim Hudson signing at 37, yeah sure, it becomes pretty big.

hey Eno — I’m a sad (but not too sad!) Red Sox fan. Can you tell me who your favorite Boston player you ever interviewed was?

1:02
Eno Sarris: Haven’t actually spent much time in their clubhouse. David Laurila is all over them. So I’ll say MOOKIE

Any recommendations for wine barrel aged beers?

1:03
Eno Sarris: Consecration from Russian River is my favoritest, but also hard to get. There are so many, though, that range from stouts to sours… I even had a few barrelaged IPAs that were good (Oak Jai Alai yum).

Have you had Almanac’s pumpkin barleywine and did you like it? How about the Bruery’s Kangarue?

1:03
Eno Sarris: No, i didn’t like the barleywine. I did, however, really like Almanac’s sour pumpkin. reminded me of the sour porter.

mmm…competitive alpaca milking

Comment From Sadwick
I would think that a minimal amount of planning and ingenuity would allow one to watch the World Series while simultaneously milking an alpaca.

I think you meant you hit 220kmh on the autobahn, not 220mph, right???? Indycars go 220 mph.

1:05
Eno Sarris: Ah! D’oh. Of course yes. So I went 140 mph. Car was rattling. Went about 135 on the Road Atlanta course with a Nissan 360 zx, that was super fun.

Nats question…what moves do you make? 2nd or 3rd base FA signing? trade? bullpen?

1:06
Eno Sarris: Just shake it up and do it again. Yeah, sign an infielder if you can.

Re “I would probably have to earn 25% more to live in Kansas City over San Francisco.” – Considering taxes and cost of living, 25% more in KC would probably be closer to 40% or 50% more in effect.

I saw the Dallas Morning News suggested the Rangers trade Jackson and Gallo to the Red Sox for Cespedes. Is this an “lol” or an “lmao” trade proposal?

Eno Sarris: For one year of Yoenis huh.

Is Headley a nice sleeper for next year? He looked like the old Headley in the 2nd half. He could find a nice home in Boston or with the White Sox.

1:08
Eno Sarris: I’d love to see him in a hitters park. Could have a mini-Beltre bounce.

eno would drive an indycar just to be hip

Eno Sarris: I’d drive it if it was square.

“cost of living” involves more than it says, though. It may cost more in dollars for a house, but my house in SF would (to me) have much more value than my house in KC; they’re not substitute products.

Is Yonder Alonso worth giving one more look in 2015?

1:09
Eno Sarris: Yes I think so. Good contact rate, if he can pair it with just a little more power…

1:09
Eno Sarris: Okay my kid is getting his first bath, gotta go help with that! I’ll be back again next week, and kids, don’t drive 220 unless it’s on a closed track with a professional driver.

Castro gets to 3,000 before Altuve (if Altuve even manages to get their). Next to 3,000: Ichiro.

So you think the old and dead Ichiro will get 156 hits before the younger and possibly less dead Arod gets 61? Arod will get to 3000 next season. I doubt Ichiro ever gets there and if he does, it’ll take at least 2 years, maybe 3.
