Hi Eno, I’m applying to colleges right now, and was curious if you had any input on ideal majors/fields of study for someone looking to get a job in baseball or around baseball. Thanks!

Eno Sarris: The easiest way to get a job, period, I think might be as a systems guy. Plenty of teams need better systems set up. it might not net you the real analyst work you want, though, in which case you should do whatever gets you deepest in the numbers. Stats analysis? Programming might help you either way, since you’ll be able to either use that to set up systems, or to better understand the softwares that you’ll need to run to do stat analysis. The way things are going today, though, you’ll need to get another degree after this one…

Eno Sarris: Oh god they gonna run Adonis Garcia out there next year, aren’t they? Ruiz could be ready by 2017 maybe. 21 and already has Double-A experience.

Thoughts on the coaching hires and missteps of the past week for the Nats?

Eno Sarris: I love Bud Black. Offering him one year seems like a crap move. I know you don’t value managers, Nationals FO, but there’s a going rate for these things. Just offer him a little less than average, but three years at least.

Eno Sarris: As for Dusty Baker, he’s a great guy. He’ll run the clubhouse, and should be a steady hand. That’s about as good as anybody. I think the overuse of pitchers thing is overrated.

Eno Sarris: I don’t even think Puig will get traded because there’s a lot of upside there, and he’s young. Dodgers acquire talents like this, and don’t need to cut costs, and can buy arms.

Eno Sarris: I’m fascinated by the Mariners and Padres because woof. And they have new/relatively new FOs that will be motivated to make changes. I think they have a ton of work to do and it won’t be immediate.

Eno Sarris: They either think Saladino can fake it… or more likely, they want to see what Tim Anderson will do for cheaper. I’m not big into Anderson, but defensively he should be okay.

You know when I wrote about the darkest thoughts in the back of our head, the nervousness, you did a great job delineating those darkest thoughts in your comments. BUT. This team not only blew a draft pick on Cuddead, but they also traded for Cespedes and the rest of the gang. It’s possible that some of the stuff we saw was ‘rebuilding Mets’, while now we get to see how they act as ‘contending Mets.’ I think they’ll spend 15-20 mill, just wondering how.

Eno Sarris: Man I was so out in front on math coming out of high school — three years of calculus plus a year of linear algebra — and didn’t do one class in college. I don’t know that I regret it. “French Porn” and the like ended up being super interesting classes.

Eno Sarris: Cecchini can’t be far away, and thank god, I’m not a Flores believer at shortstop at least. The hit tool had the biggest discrepancy between past and future, and he just had the best K% and BA of his MiLB career in Double-A. Could see him next year if Flores starts to pumpkin at short.

Have you been to both Spring Training and the AFL? If so, which do you think is the better fan experience (proximity of parks, dining, general stuff)?

Eno Sarris: I’ll take ST even though it’s more expensive. Just more relevant players. If you go to the AFL, you’re going because you love prospects or because it’s cheaper and easier to get great tickets. The dining/parks stuff is about even.

Eno, we have to assume Cespedes and Murphy are gone. Is getting a platoon partner with Lagares and a SS enough? Full seasons of Conforto, Wright, and d’Arnaud are nice, but I fear regression from Granderson. I do NOT want Desmond. If they decide to go after a guy like Baez, Russell, or Castro for example, I don’t want to trade any of the core SP. Be Sandy Alderson for a second and tell me your offseason strategy for the offense/defense. Thanks.

Eno Sarris: I’m nervous about just finding depth. Team took off when Conforto and TdA came back, yes, but I think Cespedes was a major driving force and that the team needs one more big hitter. Not sure Zobrist is that, either, and 2B seems like a spot they can fake it. The guy I want there is Heyward. Play him in center for two years, bet he’ll be better than Cespedes.

Should the Orioles worry that if they don’t sign Wei Yin Chen, they’ll have no LH starters in the rotation and basically zero in their farm system? Or is having a lefty in the rotation not really important?

Eno Sarris: That sort of thing might matter in a short playoff series, but right now the most important thing for the Orioles is to get there. I think they should skimp on fifth starter and see if they can’t use the Chris Davis money to get a better, more all-around player first.

The Reds? Can you please elaborate on why they were a finalist? I see them being a rather large dumpster fire next year.

Eno Sarris: I really like Dick Williams. He’s one of the few FO I’ve seen in the clubhouse talking to players, and he’s a smart guy. As for the Reds, I love Iglesias, I like deSclafani, and Bailey could come back and actually give them a representative rotation with upside for better. Billy Hamilton needs to be better, but that’s not impossible, and they have three very interesting shortstops on that team that could lead to a trade.

Eno Sarris: I do not like him much. Do not like his hitting mechanics or plate discipline. I guess in the short term his athleticism could win out, but I like Souza better.

A team built for Fenway works at OPACY and Yankee Stadium, but a team built for Coors doesn’t make sense at AT&T, Dodger Stadium and Petco.

Eno Sarris: Yes, Bill Petti did work on this. Extreme parks are bad for winning. All of the extreme parks, in related news, have moved their walls in the last four or five years.

It’s so mean, but I bet there are front offices / management types that are into this. I mean, we see this happen from time to time. What do the individual pitch splits look like for Dallas Keuchel? That fastball velocity is pretty fringy and isn’t going to get better as he ages. Does the rest of his mix look good enough that we don’t have to worry about him going back to old Dallas Keuchel?

Eno Sarris: The sinker and change are elite, one for GBs, the other for Ks and GBs. The slider gets 20% whiffs, way above 14% average. I’d say the biggest risk is that he goes back to 2014 Keuchel and loses some of those Ks.

Eno Sarris: Drop the back elbow, golf swing, move back in the box and see if you can’t wait as long as possible to hit right center. Most of the worst defenders are in right field, if I remember right.

Hypothetical question. Let’s say it’s 2 months in, Yoan Moncada is absolutely beastly in the minors and considered by many in the industry as a top 5 prospect. Dustin Pedroia goes down with a bum ankle and is determined out for the season. Do the Red Sox bring up Moncada to man 2B? I mean, they promoted both Xander and Betts “early” by a lot of peoples estimation. What do you think?

Eno Sarris: Out of high A, huh? When they could still probably move Betts to second and find an outfielder? Doubt it, unless you move the timeline to later in season and he’s in Double-A.

When you buy a bomber, do you do quick math to figure out what it cost as a regular bottle? I do when I pay 15+ for a bomber and then say, no way Id pay 8$ for a regular bottle (but then I still buy the bomber)

Eno Sarris: I buy $11 Almanac sours all the time and they in the small bottle. What I’ve decided to do is more try to manage the overall expenditure. Mix expensive beers with stalwarts that I like.

To be honest my biggest problem is that I hit em just over the infielders’ heads. I make solid contact and can reliably get on first, but I feel like that’s not so impressive in a game so easy as slow pitch softball.
