Wont Aoki make more than the 4mill option the Giants turned down?

12:01
Eno Sarris: I don’t get that move! I guess the only way to really look at it is that they want that $4m for a bigger acquisition that will make a bigger splash. Greinke? an outfielder?

Comment From Jake
Hi Eno, I’m applying to colleges right now, and was curious if you had any input on ideal majors/fields of study for someone looking to get a job in baseball or around baseball. Thanks!

12:03
Eno Sarris: The easiest way to get a job, period, I think might be as a systems guy. Plenty of teams need better systems set up. it might not net you the real analyst work you want, though, in which case you should do whatever gets you deepest in the numbers. Stats analysis? Programming might help you either way, since you’ll be able to either use that to set up systems, or to better understand the softwares that you’ll need to run to do stat analysis. The way things are going today, though, you’ll need to get another degree after this one…

12:03
Comment From Ben
With Olivera moving to LF, what do Braves do at 3B? Ruiz isn’t really that close is he? And Riley is far far away. Seems an odd move. Thoughts?

12:04
Eno Sarris: Oh god they gonna run Adonis Garcia out there next year, aren’t they? Ruiz could be ready by 2017 maybe. 21 and already has Double-A experience.

12:05
Eno Sarris: (although a 91 wRC+ in Double A is not blowing the socks off)

12:05
Comment From Not Mike Rizzo, Seriously
Thoughts on the coaching hires and missteps of the past week for the Nats?

12:06
Eno Sarris: I love Bud Black. Offering him one year seems like a crap move. I know you don’t value managers, Nationals FO, but there’s a going rate for these things. Just offer him a little less than average, but three years at least.

12:06
Eno Sarris: As for Dusty Baker, he’s a great guy. He’ll run the clubhouse, and should be a steady hand. That’s about as good as anybody. I think the overuse of pitchers thing is overrated.

12:06
Comment From Bobby Blownilla
can you please rank the following as most likely to take leap into top couple tiers of pitchers next year (say top 20) and please do the …… thing to show distance between? thanks! Chase Anderson, Eovaldi, K. Hendricks, Joe Kelley, Eduardo Rodriguez.

12:07
Eno Sarris: Eduardo Rodriguez ….. Nate Eovaldi … Chase Anderson, Kyle Hendricks …. Joe Kelly

12:07
Comment From Bowie
Eno, Do you truly believe that Yasiel Puig will be traded this offseason? He’s such an electric talent with a team friendly contract, I can’t imagine any team not being interested. If he is traded, where do you believe he will end up?

12:07
Comment From JOSE
How awesome would it be if the mets signed Cespedes AND traded for Puig?

12:08
Eno Sarris: Mets thing not happening, I’ll… wear a jersey of your choosing on 120Sports for a week if they do that. I don’t wear jerseys.

12:08
Eno Sarris: I don’t even think Puig will get traded because there’s a lot of upside there, and he’s young. Dodgers acquire talents like this, and don’t need to cut costs, and can buy arms.

12:09
Comment From Mike
How do you expect Michael Brantley to age? 15HR, 290BA next few years?

12:09
Eno Sarris: He has the five tool skillset that should age well, even if each part isn’t plus plus. Worst case is that he starts getting hurt more.

12:10
Eno Sarris: great part of the hot stove is that you can focus your attention on next year so quickly. screw it, I want to live

Eno Sarris:

12:10
Comment From RotoLando
What team do you think has the most work to do this off-season, and which team do you think has the best chance to make a big jump in outcome next year?

12:11
Eno Sarris: I’m fascinated by the Mariners and Padres because woof. And they have new/relatively new FOs that will be motivated to make changes. I think they have a ton of work to do and it won’t be immediate.

12:11
Eno Sarris: As for the second part, I’ll first put up a poll that has my finalists on it.

Did you end up catching Dylan Bundy at the AFL? If so any comments on coaching he’d received and impact on his delivery?

12:13
Eno Sarris: Headed down today (short chat) but excited to talk to him, hoping I will get chance.

12:14
Comment From Merv Throneberry
Jabari Blash – his name even sounds like he’ll be all or nothing…

12:14
Eno Sarris: Should be a… bash… either way.

12:14
Comment From Q-Ball
White Sox declined the $10 mil option on Alexei Ramirez. I was surprised, not because he’s worth $10 mil, but because the White Sox have literally nobody to replace him. Thoughts?

12:15
Eno Sarris: They either think Saladino can fake it… or more likely, they want to see what Tim Anderson will do for cheaper. I’m not big into Anderson, but defensively he should be okay.

12:15
Comment From Zonk
Mike Maddux changing addresses made news. Who, in your opinion, are the top pitching coaches right now in the majors?

seriously, the mets shouldnt consider moving wright somewhere else? and do you REALLy see them blowing two or three draft picks to sign the guys you suggested? this FO?

12:19
Eno Sarris: Listen, dude, I hear you. I hear you. You know when I wrote about the darkest thoughts in the back of our head, the nervousness, you did a great job delineating those darkest thoughts in your comments. BUT. This team not only blew a draft pick on Cuddead, but they also traded for Cespedes and the rest of the gang. It’s possible that some of the stuff we saw was ‘rebuilding Mets’, while now we get to see how they act as ‘contending Mets.’ I think they’ll spend 15-20 mill, just wondering how.

12:19

Crystall ball time Eno. Aoki goes to (insert team here)

12:22
Eno Sarris: Here’s a weird idea… the Athletics? Have to see if Crisp’s career is over, I guess. The Mariners? Angels? We’ll see I guess. Just listing some competitive-ish teams that are low on the LF leaderboards.

12:22
Comment From jensen
how far away is gavin cecchini. also math is the best major period.

12:23
Eno Sarris: Man I was so out in front on math coming out of high school — three years of calculus plus a year of linear algebra — and didn’t do one class in college. I don’t know that I regret it. “French Porn” and the like ended up being super interesting classes.

12:24
Eno Sarris: Cecchini can’t be far away, and thank god, I’m not a Flores believer at shortstop at least. The hit tool had the biggest discrepancy between past and future, and he just had the best K% and BA of his MiLB career in Double-A. Could see him next year if Flores starts to pumpkin at short.

12:24
Comment From Derek
Have you been to both Spring Training and the AFL? If so, which do you think is the better fan experience (proximity of parks, dining, general stuff)?

12:25
Eno Sarris: I’ll take ST even though it’s more expensive. Just more relevant players. If you go to the AFL, you’re going because you love prospects or because it’s cheaper and easier to get great tickets. The dining/parks stuff is about even.

Comment From Mr. Marlin
No one on a Fangraphs chat asks about the Marlins…so, what should the Marlins do this offseason?

12:27
Eno Sarris: Don’t trade Ozuna. Sign a pitcher or three.

12:27
Comment From Larry Caray
We we witness Cubtober again? Maybe even Schwarvember?

12:28
Eno Sarris: There’s a dark time line where things don’t work out, but I don’t like that timeline. They should find some more pitching depth and be back.

12:28
Eno Sarris: Answer the poll!

12:28
Comment From BP
Alderson reportedly backed out of trading Wheeler after he called him to say he didn’t want to leave. Collins pitched Familia in a 9-3 game because he reportedly told him he wanted to pitch. And Collins leaves Harvey in for the 9th because he told him he didn’t want to get taken out. Don’t the Mets know what “manage” means?

12:29
Eno Sarris: I’ve never heard of a player other than Papelbon being like, yeah sure, trade me, take me out, whatever. These guys are competitors and they want to be in there, winning, all the time, for the team they’re on.

12:29
Comment From Q-Ball
Javier Baez: Are you a believer, or a skeptic?

12:29
Eno Sarris: Skeptic. Great bad speed. Strong defense. Minus minus everything else — plate discipline, hit tool, makeup.

12:29
Comment From Philbert
If the Jays decide to go with Saunders/Pompey in LF, could they reasonably get something beyond salary relief in return for Ben Revere at $6.7 million?

12:30
Eno Sarris: I don’t value dude highly but someone might.

12:30
Comment From Optimetstic
Eno, we have to assume Cespedes and Murphy are gone. Is getting a platoon partner with Lagares and a SS enough? Full seasons of Conforto, Wright, and d’Arnaud are nice, but I fear regression from Granderson. I do NOT want Desmond. If they decide to go after a guy like Baez, Russell, or Castro for example, I don’t want to trade any of the core SP. Be Sandy Alderson for a second and tell me your offseason strategy for the offense/defense. Thanks.

12:31
Eno Sarris: I’m nervous about just finding depth. Team took off when Conforto and TdA came back, yes, but I think Cespedes was a major driving force and that the team needs one more big hitter. Not sure Zobrist is that, either, and 2B seems like a spot they can fake it. The guy I want there is Heyward. Play him in center for two years, bet he’ll be better than Cespedes.

12:31
Comment From j6takish
Freidman routinely traded for jerks when he was with tampa because he thought clubhouse issues were overrated and it as a good way to buy low on guys. I don’t understand the puig rumors at all

Anything to be excited about for the Orioles starting pitching if they don’t make any major upgrades?

12:32
Eno Sarris: In the second half, Kevin Gausman didn’t give up a homer on the curve ball and it was his best pitch for grounders. He might have a breaking ball now.

12:33
Comment From mtsw
Should the Orioles worry that if they don’t sign Wei Yin Chen, they’ll have no LH starters in the rotation and basically zero in their farm system? Or is having a lefty in the rotation not really important?

12:34
Eno Sarris: That sort of thing might matter in a short playoff series, but right now the most important thing for the Orioles is to get there. I think they should skimp on fifth starter and see if they can’t use the Chris Davis money to get a better, more all-around player first.

Does the Dick Williams promotion in Cincinnati move the needle at all?

12:34
Comment From Tom
The Reds? Can you please elaborate on why they were a finalist? I see them being a rather large dumpster fire next year.

12:36
Eno Sarris: I really like Dick Williams. He’s one of the few FO I’ve seen in the clubhouse talking to players, and he’s a smart guy. As for the Reds, I love Iglesias, I like deSclafani, and Bailey could come back and actually give them a representative rotation with upside for better. Billy Hamilton needs to be better, but that’s not impossible, and they have three very interesting shortstops on that team that could lead to a trade.

12:36
Comment From JR
What do you think about Eddie Rosario for a dynasty league? Is he a better bet than either Steven Souza or Dexter Fowler?

12:36
Eno Sarris: I do not like him much. Do not like his hitting mechanics or plate discipline. I guess in the short term his athleticism could win out, but I like Souza better.

12:37
Comment From Dave
Yo Eno, What type of contract can Ben Zobrist get and by which team?

12:37
Eno Sarris: 3/45 with a contender?

12:37
Comment From Xolo
People keep saying that the Padres should blow it up but outside of Ross and Kimbrel, what do they have that’ll actually make it worth their while to just waive fans goodbye? Myers has to prove he can stay healthy, Norris hasn’t really established himself yet and Spang and Solarte are too unestablished.

12:38
Eno Sarris: Yeah they stuck in a bunch of ways. Might have to spend their way into some good graces while Preller works his minor league magic.

12:38
Comment From Prince Wednesday
Regarding Puig and, specifically his fantasy value, what’s the highest you’d draft him in a 10 team, mixed, re-draft league? I’m sure someone will jump much earlier, but given the injuries, I don’t think I want to touch him earlier than round 8.

12:38
Eno Sarris: I think he’s a top 50 player, lock it.

Are teams like the Rays or Rockies that have home parks with significantly different park factors than other teams in their division at a significant disadvantage? A team built for Fenway works at OPACY and Yankee Stadium, but a team built for Coors doesn’t make sense at AT&T, Dodger Stadium and Petco.

12:39
Eno Sarris: Yes, Bill Petti did work on this. Extreme parks are bad for winning. All of the extreme parks, in related news, have moved their walls in the last four or five years.

12:39
Comment From War2d2
Enoooooooo! The Cubs have said their two top priorities are OF D and starting pitching. BOOM! YOU’RE THEO FOR A DAY! Congrats on the great hair. Also: do you sign one of the big guns (Price/Greinke), medium guns (Cueto/Zim), or a couple mid-back guys (Leake/Shark)? Or do you trade a young bat (some combo of Schwarber/Soler/Baez) for pitching (Indians? Braves?) and sign Gordo or Heyward for better D?

12:40
Eno Sarris: Big gun or bust, and no trades. Find a CF.

What’s your forecast for Castellanos next season?

12:42

12:42
Comment From JR

12:45
Comment From Joe
If both only OF eligible, which one you like better in 2 years: Schwarber or Conforto? I didn’t think this was close, but Conforto’s batted ball MPH was pretty impressive this year.

12:45
Eno Sarris: If we talking about fantasy, probably Schwarber because he’s got the plus-est tool in that power. If we talking real life, might be closer, but it’s not like Conforto is amazing in the outfield.

In the next FA class, what are the best bets for above average, mid-tier, max 4-year-contract, non-QO, position players? Asking for a GM friend

12:48

12:48
Comment From Derek
Where’s Giancarlo getting drafted next year? Are you avoiding due to his injury history or will he be a great value in round 2?

Have teams ever considered “alternative” therapy when it comes to players with minus-minus makeup? Like A Clockwork Orange type therapy where it makes players appreciate their chances in the bigs?

12:54
Eno Sarris: Like hype them up in the media, put them in cleanup, debut against Clayton Kershaw, and then leak stuff to columnists about doubts? It’s so mean, but I bet there are front offices / management types that are into this. I mean, we see this happen from time to time. I’d rather foster a fun surroundings that are supportive and go slowly.

12:55
Comment From BP
Sure, players all want to be “the guy,” which is great. But aren’t management positions designed to instruct employees what to do, not the other way around?

12:55
Eno Sarris: Oh yeah I was agreeing with the question! Sometimes you have to rip the ball out of their hand and let them yell.

12:55
Comment From mtsw
Given the gaping hole in the Orioles rotation, should they give Brian Matusz or Zach Britton another shot as a starter next season?

12:56
Eno Sarris: Man I don’t think Wei-Yin Chen is a gaping hole myself. Find a guy that can keep the seat warm. Fister maybe.

12:56
Comment From Andy5
What do the individual pitch splits look like for Dallas Keuchel? That fastball velocity is pretty fringy and isn’t going to get better as he ages. Does the rest of his mix look good enough that we don’t have to worry about him going back to old Dallas Keuchel?

12:58
Eno Sarris: The sinker and change are elite, one for GBs, the other for Ks and GBs. The slider gets 20% whiffs, way above 14% average. I’d say the biggest risk is that he goes back to 2014 Keuchel and loses some of those Ks.

12:58
Comment From Bobby Blownilla
Is there anyone else in MLB who is kinda like JBJ that the mets could deal for without having to pay the “I just broke out for a month” price?

12:59
Eno Sarris: You could actually talk to them and maybe have a reasonable conversation about JBJ in particular.

1:01
Eno Sarris: What lefty CF is available? Nate McLouth? Jordan Schafer? Free agency kinda sucks.

1:01
Comment From War2d2
Re: “foster a fun surroundings that are supportive and go slowly,” how much of the Cubs’ 2015 success do you attribute to Joe Maddon? Do you think they make the same run with Rickey Renteria (who wasn’t a bad dude, by all accounts) or Dale Sveum (who was “angry grandpa”)?

1:01

Outside of Delibar and Cecil, can you think of any players who use the weighted ball program to up their velocity? If so, how has it worked out for them?

1:02

Thanks for the answer! Corollary: as far as a CF, do you A) resign Fowler and his shizzy D, B) fast-track Almora and hope the bat isn’t as bad as it seems, or C) see if Bryant could handle it as a full-time CF and use Baez or Villanueva at 3B? (I only suggest C because Kiley said several times he thought Bryant could be a CF regular)

I feel like with the decrease in chat attendance during the off-season, that I’m obligated to ask more baseball-related questions per post. Maybe I’m wrong though, and what is really needed is more lude-y weirdness.

In Enotopia, are any fruit allowed to be incorporated into beer?

Does Kike Hernandez ever become a regular?

1:12
Eno Sarris: No, I don’t think the glove is good enough anywhere to float a one-dimensional bat. I’ll admit I’m not sure. But he looks like a valuable everywhere guy.

Hypothetical question. Let’s say it’s 2 months in, Yoan Moncada is absolutely beastly in the minors and considered by many in the industry as a top 5 prospect. Dustin Pedroia goes down with a bum ankle and is determined out for the season. Do the Red Sox bring up Moncada to man 2B? I mean, they promoted both Xander and Betts “early” by a lot of peoples estimation. What do you think?

1:12
Eno Sarris: Out of high A, huh? When they could still probably move Betts to second and find an outfielder? Doubt it, unless you move the timeline to later in season and he’s in Double-A.

When you buy a bomber, do you do quick math to figure out what it cost as a regular bottle? I do when I pay 15+ for a bomber and then say, no way Id pay 8$ for a regular bottle (but then I still buy the bomber)

1:13
Eno Sarris: I buy $11 Almanac sours all the time and they in the small bottle. What I’ve decided to do is more try to manage the overall expenditure. Mix expensive beers with stalwarts that I like.

Best chance of becoming a closer in the next 3 years: Burgos, Bracho, Zych or Barrios?

1:14
Eno Sarris: Zych

To be honest my biggest problem is that I hit em just over the infielders’ heads. I make solid contact and can reliably get on first, but I feel like that’s not so impressive in a game so easy as slow pitch softball.

Eno Sarris: Read some of my pieces with Donaldson and Beltre on swing plane. Could help with the power.

Whats Justin Turners Fantasy value next year since he only qualifies at 3b and 1B? Valuable bench piece?

1:16
Eno Sarris: As long as the team doesn’t buy a starter at his position, I’ll give him a starting fantasy 3b role.

Bird or Piscotty in dynasty assuming regular playing time?

Yo Eno, how do you think Herrera does next year if he’s Mets full time 2B?

1:20
Eno Sarris: He hits the ball pretty hard and has patience and D. That’s a really nice place to start. Ill give him more power than projections and call him something like a .260/.320/.410 guy, which would make him above average at second…

The Mets should see what the Rockies want for Carlos Gonzalez, great fit who can play all 3 outfield positions and is under team control for a couple of years.

He can’t really play CF, which is where the Mets actually have a need.

Heyward makes a ton of sense for them.
