Jason: What’s the highest you see Cotton going in terms of SP this year? Top 40? Is keeping him in 17 team league for 8 bucks a solid price?

Eno Sarris: I’d keep him there. I bet he goes in the top 60 unless I’m inflating him too much.

Alan: Where are you at with Michael Fulmer? Eventual top 10 pitcher potential, or is he more someone that will float in the 20-30 range?

Eno Sarris: I see ace. He always had a great slider and then he made that changeup great. Only thing that worries me is health.

Eric: What level of Lynn can we expect this year?

Eno Sarris: 3.7/1.2/7K9, seems he can do that in his sleep. If command is off a bit, he’ll give up more homers to lefties.

Jimmy: After Paxton changed his delivery, it seems like he had “elite stuff” but only pretty good results. If I’m wrong, please correct me. If I’m right, why might that be?

Eno Sarris: I’m not sure his secondary stuff is amazing. Plus plus fastball, obviously.

Jack: After the (justified) frustration that people are showing with Jorge Posada failing to reach the 5% vote threshold, who are some of the other most egregious names to fall off the ballot recently? Jim Edmonds and Kenny Lofton are the first two that come to mind for me

Eno Sarris: Yup. But it’s not surprising that guys were defense is a question are bubble guys. If we’re still having a hard time quantifying that, the voting block is going to be even further behind.

Chuck: Let’s say you have the first/fifth/tenth overall picks in the draft. If you could guarantee any real player’s career outcomes with these picks, what is the lowest you would be happy with?

Eno Sarris: Had to poke around. Obviously it doesn’t always work out, but I’d want like a Harold Baines at least, and then maybe a Michael Cuddyer type and then maybe a reliever or fifth starter?

Brad: 14 team OBP league, Dahl or benintendi for this year only? Thanks.

Eno Sarris: Projections say Dahl by a buck and it’s hard to disagree. Even if you dream on Ben to be better, Dahl can be better than his projections, too.

CamdenWarehouse: Is Kopech hitting 110 real?

Eno Sarris: It was what you call a Pull Down, so he was running before he threw it. I know people hate the way that looks, but it’s like maxing out with weight lifting. You do it to achieve game level stress in the offseason, and you don’t do it a ton.

AKA22: Any excitement about Straily now that he’s in Miami? Not sure why but i kind of want to gamble on him, Chen, and Conley. What order do you like them in for fantasy?

Eno Sarris: I like him, but last in the group. Probably still Chen Conley Straily, betting on Chen to get the pop-ups back with better health. But the first two are closer than the third, as much as I think Straily is a legit starter in a decent spot.

Jack: What are ur thoughts on Josh Bell this year?

Eno Sarris: I think it’ll be like it was in the minors — defense will be awkward and patience will be ahead of power.

Jack: Is Oakland done for the offseason or do they wait out the market for one of the remaining bats?

Eno Sarris: I bet they have one more in them.

Joseph : What is your feeling on the Rangers rotation with the additions of Cashner and Ross? I feel like it is a top 5 rotation in the AL assuming Ross is healthy. I don’t expect Cashner to find his former ways, but that would be a huge boost. Excited to see Darvish with hopefully a full season and think Perez must make a step forward if Texas is going to compete in the AL West. What’s your take?

Eno Sarris: I think it’s top heavy.

inquiry: FanGraphs Depth Charts, ZiPS and Steamer all project nearly identical 2017 WAR for rookie outfielders Andrew Benintendi of Boston and Mitch Haniger of Seattle. Does the 3 1/2-year age difference explain the contrasting hype for each hitter?

Eno Sarris: Shape of the production also. Not sure I agree that Benintendi is a -6 outfielder.

Jerry: Would you rather have Paxton or Felix this year (real, fantasy, whatever)?

Eno Sarris: Paxton.

Craiggers: Thoughts on the Myers extension?

Eno Sarris: Seems a bit much, would’ve liked to have seen another healthy season in there.

SouthSider: Why is David Robertson not being moved? SF and Nats definitely need closers, could net some good prospects for ChiSox.

Eno Sarris: Maybe Chicago didn’t like the offers and is hoping that a team will give up a bevy of young guys at the deadline once they know they’re headed to the postseason?

Eno Sarris: If you’re competitive? I might want another veteran piece back, but the basic structure is fine for me. Eloy is probably not Jorge Soler but he’s also not NOT Jorge Soler.

Wyatt: Best player to be forced to sign a minor league contract this offseason?

Eno Sarris: Chris Carter, it looks like.

Hannah Hochevar: Who am I rooting for the Orioles to sign at this point? (Need to replace my Michael Saunders shrine, which was already sort of crappy.)

Eno Sarris: Luis Valbuena?

SouthSider: Well SF has Melancon but their bullpen was no bueno last year. could still use Robertson as set up.

Eno Sarris: And SF probably wasn’t going to give up anything real nice until they see if they more in WC or divisional mix.

Marc: Eno, how (if at all) does release point affect spin rate? e.g. if all else was held equal, would an overhand release cause spin more than a sidearm release?

Eno Sarris: Spin is the same, depends on something innate. However, you harvest the spin differently. Basically, if you’re inherently low spin, you should throw from a lower slot to get more fade to go with natural sink. If you’re high spin, you should throw from higher slot to get more ride from your existing spin.

Ryan: What are your thoughts on the return the Reds got for Straily?

Eno Sarris: Pretty good, considering they picked up Straily for nothing and he’s more of a fill out a rotation than a building block piece.

CamdenWarehouse: Why is the frustration that Posada fell off the ballot justified? I don’t think anyone is seriously saying that he’s a hall of famer, right? They just want him to hang around for a while and get some respect. That seems like a luxury for when the ballot isn’t stacked with legitimate hall resumes.

Wyatt: Looking at Dan Straily’s 2016 numbers, has to be the luckiest year I’ve seen in a while. 236 BABIP, 81% LOB, 33 hard%, and 5.02 xFIP. Reds getting three minor leaguers for him one of the smartest moves of the offseason?

Eno Sarris: Career BABIP is .255 and he’s an extreme fly ball guy with some pop-up skill. I wouldn’t use hard% now that we have better numbers. Basically 50th percentile for exit velo. Some hope that another year of training gets his old velo back.

Eno Sarris: But yeah it was a good move.

Zach: Re: the question about Bonds and Rocket having some disparity. I’ve read from at least one voter it has a lot to do with the fact that Bonds steroid use can be roughly outlined to when it started, and his numbers before that were still HOF caliber by a wide margin.

Eno Sarris: There’s a jump that seems obvious in the Clemens numbers, but it’s more obvious in Bonds.

Eno Sarris: The “he wasn’t nice to me” argument is maybe the worst one I’ve ever heard.

Black Beard’s Delight: Hey ENO! I read an interesting article on Tyler Glasnow this week. He is shortening his delivery and the Pirates are giving him his 2 seam back. Mainly just wanted to share that with you, but does that improve your outlook on him?

Eno Sarris: If he can throw the two-seam to the middle of the plate because he has confidence in the movement, maybe one or both combined will help his command. He would take a huge leap forward if he could just get ahead more often because the curve is great.

Randy Savage: How do you feel about Benintendi going into this year. I can keep him in a keep 6 OBP league, but I’m not sure the upside is there to be a fantasy superstar.

Eno Sarris: In OBP I think there is absolutely that upside. I think he could eventually have .400 OBP seasons.

Halo Halo (hold the corn): If Garrett Richards is throwing normal in spring training, how much do you bid in an AL auction (standard 5×5 roto)?

Eno Sarris: 12-15? low 1/ high 2.

Adam: Is AJ Pollock going to return to form this year?

Eno Sarris: yes.

Dave Aunepetitegraine: For fantasy next year, where would you draft Gary Sanchez? 2nd catcher off the board?

Eno Sarris: yes

Tony: Are the Cubs putting themselves in a very dangerous position going into the season with not a ton of 6th starter options (and a 5th starter that doesn’t have a ton of MLB experience starting over a full season)? The Cubs have had extraordinary luck with rotation health over the last 2 seasons, they could be in a really tough spot if any of their top 3 starters miss significant time.

Eno Sarris: Pretty sure they know they need pitching, from what I know they’re definitely focused on it. This was a bad offseason to add starting pitching, though.

Devil Ray J. Johnson: Drew Smyly as a Mariner: Buy or Sell?

Eno Sarris: Buy if you’re spending like he’s a fantasy 4/5 in mixed leagues, 2/3 in AL.

BJ: Eno man, I’m wavering on Cotton vs. Gsellman. BP now rates Gsellman a 60 and Cotton a 45. Help me keep the Cotton faith.

Eno Sarris: We all have our own opinions. By movement, velocity gap, and outcomes, Cotton’s change is already better than anything Gsellman throws. G has the velo, and that’s all I’ll really give him, and it’s not like Cotton is below average.

TommyLasordid: I’m beginning to think Dodgers will sign Utley and go with a platoon (Taylor, Hernandez from right side) at 2B. Agree? Would that be sufficient in NL West, at least until trade deadline?

Eno Sarris: I think the Dozier deal will happen, maybe three-way… but there’s certainly no better second base option available freely.

Devil Ray J. Johnson: Nate Karns as a Royal: Buy or Sell?

Eno Sarris: Sell. There’s hope — if he raises the arm slot and finds his health — but that’s two things he has to do, and he was always thought of as injury-prone.

Johnny5Alive: how much do the mets suck this year? obviously, they need bullpen (which they wont pay for apparently), but they also need a catcher, a real CF. Plus they are apparently keeping Bruce, which means conforto wont even play bc TC is a moron.

Eno Sarris: I actually like Lagares as d-first, and if d’Arnaud’s shoulder is healthy, there’s hope there. Reed and Robles are good, Smoker is intriguing, and there’s a starter that might end up in that pen.

Eno Sarris: On that last point, let me BIGGEST SIGH EVER. Not to you, but to the team.

Mick D: Looking back at the Reds pitching staff since 2012, is it fair to say Dusty once again ruined a staff ( Latos, Bailey, Arroyo, Cingrani, Leake and Broxton) or does the decline of the staff fall more on Price? Or just bad luck or just pitchers?

Eno Sarris: Latos was always headed there because of his conditioning and mechanics IMO, Arroyo and Bailey were older dudes, and Cingrani was always headed to the pen.

Eno Sarris: If Fulmer repeats his peripherals from last year, yeah he won’t be as good. But with that swSTR% and that change, plus a slider he can now mix in more often for Ks instead of grounders, I see more Ks next year, maybe significantly more.

Eno Sarris: Not Mitchell at all. I think Cessa can go back down and work. Severino needs to find one (two?) secondary pitches, so I actually think it might be Green.

Eno Sarris: He was throwing a splitter more often in the second half of the second half, when he was a 3.75ish type starter. I can’t see much more in there, but that’s useful.

E5: Bagwell I can see, but wasn’t Pudge in the Mitchel Report? Doesn’t that just stink?

Eno Sarris: A lot of eggs in the Mitchell basket… I throw my hands up. The commissioner didn’t care, and I wasn’t in those clubhouses.

E5: Why wouldn’t WAS give Treinen another chance to start? He’s got the pitches and the GB%. Never got the chance to show he couldn’t at the big league level.

Eno Sarris: Man, you’re right that his change is interesting. Has the velo gap at least (10 mph), but less fade than his sinker, and only an inch more drop. I bet that pitch does worse if he throws it more. Plus it’s all about that sinker.

El Duderino: What to do with Matt Holliday this year? In YS he could pop 30 HR and get close to 100RBI. Under the radar pick?

Eno Sarris: Yeah his exit velo and launch angles were really good last year.

Steam has him 252/304/442 with a 190 ISO and 15 HR over 408 PA

Eno Sarris: Cellarmaker/City Beer Store is a great combo. Fieldwork right by Rare Barrel is a favorite of mine, try their hazy IPAs. Almanac now has a taproom.

Matt: I’ve read all sorts of methodologies on building player ranking algorithms – and frankensteined them into my own. But nothing I’ve ever read really addresses how to meld your offense rankings into your pitching ranking for an overall ranking. I’ve tried normalising value in offense/pitching, then merging that but didn’t like results. I tried splitting up dollars allocated by hitting/pitching (by starting lineup and 5/9 of bench goes to pitching) and that got close, but I still think undervalues pitching. Thoughts?

Eno Sarris: I don’t think it matters that much. Especially if you can throw tiers on your rankings, after the first two rounds, you’ll be dealing with your actual team and availability in tiers anyway. So then your question will be, should I get the last third baseman in this tier, or the last SP2, and that’s how the tiers help you line things up.

Andrew: Is LUcas Duda by definition a Lude?

Eno Sarris: He got hurt at end of 2014, when he was 28, averaging 94 with a splitter, more just ‘headed there probably.’

Eno Sarris: It was ignored for so long, I don’t see why we start using it more now.

Eno Sarris: The curve could be the thing that makes it all hum, it’s a hard one at 80+, and it doesn’t give up homers, so it might work without the cutter.

Eno Sarris: I think they can do that. Maybe they have to own the stadium… dunno. I do know that Lindbergh and Miller put a PITCHfx in their stadium and didn’t share the data.

Adam: when’s the european beer tour? we have some decent craft beers in barcelona you could use to justify a trip… shallow keepers only 3. keeping trout in 7th, leaning springer 11th and villar 19th round. any arguments for lindor in 5th or moncada in 19th?

Eno Sarris: Man I love Barcelona. You got it right, though Lindor floor way higher than Villar, so that’s the only one that is really tough for me.
