For 2014 (cost being equal – 5×5 H2H), would you go with Masterson, Cashner, Medlen, Tillman, Porcello or Alex Wood?

Eno Sarris: I’ll throw those together… Cash is first for me. Smyly’s changeup is actually pretty bad, so I’ll take Wood short-term over him if we know Wood is starting. Wood should get hurt someday with that delivery, but maybe not right away. Then Medlen, maybe he goes above Smyly too. Smyly has to transition back to starting, too. Porcello. Masterson definitely last. No, Tillman last.

Eno Sarris: Damn they should both be kept. Probably Beltre, unless it’s a super deep league with five outfielders. Just on position and reliability and batting average.

Eno Sarris: If it’s close to half, you’re screwed. If it’s like six or something, you can do it. I think you just need to find a friend group that wants in so you can get a crew all at once.

Eno Sarris: I’ve got my Loney piece all written LOL so I hope the Pirates get him. If not… they’ve done what they’ve done with about 1 WAR per year from first base since 2008. That duo can put up one win… but two?

What are your thoughts on Jose Abreu vs Matt Adams in a keeper? Both are draftable and I’m planning on targeting one or the other for my CI spot. (H2H 5×5)

Eno Sarris: I think Abreu can .275 with 25-30 homer, and Adams is about the same. I think Adams is the safer choice (although his batting average could plummet since he pulls the ball on the ground a ton and got shifted), but Abreu has a bit more upside in that park.

Eno Sarris: That’d be kind of awesome. Could he switch hit? And would he refine those tools? Because there’s a window there where he could switch hit with power and patience and still hit .240 and make bad plays in the outfield lol.

Eno Sarris: Howard: I think it’s usually the other way around, you can have good control but bad command, implying that you can put the ball in the zone, but then are hittable in the zone because it goes down broadstreet sometimes. if you had good command, you could put it where you wanted. Maybe sometimes you’d put it outside the zone on purpose and it would look like you had bad control?

Do you think Brad Lincoln could make any kind of impact for the Phils? Better than signing Mujica right?

Eno Sarris: I mean Mujica is a good pitcher, but I have some worries. For one, that’s big money for a guy that had shoulder fatigue last year. Also, two years. Also, that’s now a TON of splitfingers in one pen. Does that matter? I wonder if it’ll make both of them more hittable. Uehara and Mujica throw the pitch more than their fastball, and nobody else does.

Eno Sarris: Oh, Lincoln. Eh, projecting releivers is nigh impossible. That’s one takeaway that I didn’t really emphasize in my non-tender piece: relievers are the non-tenders that are better deals.

Eno Sarris: Mostly seen that with pitch classification, but have wanted to do this with baseball players for sure.

So how good is Will Smith going to be as a starter. Is that increase in SwStr% soley due to the fact that he moved to the pen? How much of a problem is it that he didn’t throw many change-ups last year? I want to like him but it doesn’t look very realistic that he will last in a rotation, even a bad one like Milwaukee currently has.

Eno Sarris: Worried about that. He has bad splits. Maybe they see something they can fix with the changeup.

Eno Sarris: Sorta big for him, actually. He was practically same hitter, park gave him a homer or three. Yanks would be awesome. Orioles.

A lot of people seem to hate the Aoki trade for the Brewers. Aoki is a good player, but nothing amazing and at 31 so he’s probably not going to get better. Smith is only a reliever, but was a starter in the minors and has 6 years of control. Overvaluing Aoki, undervaluing Smith, or spot on?

Eno Sarris: Feels like they could have gotten a smidge more. Smith looks like a reliever to me.

To what extent should changes in batted ball type (LD%, GB% up with FB % down) be taken into consideration when explaining a rise in BABIP?

Eno Sarris: Very much so. Especially since batted ball rates stabilize faster — you can believe them in smaller samples. LD is tricky, that’s a hard stat and it’s done by eye and has a lot of noise in it. But if a guys GB/FB has changed significantly and so has his BABIP, you might regress it less heavily to the mean than you would otherwise.

Eno Sarris: Top 10 draft picks have a much better outcome than the lower rounds, and they haven’t figured out the Cards’ magic of drafting lower-ceiling more-likely-to-be-productive guys to fill in the problem spots.

Would Daniel Murphy be of any interest to the Dodgers in a deal for Andre Ethier? He came up as a 1B/3B. If so, would Dodgers be willing to throw in any cash?

Eno Sarris: This is unterrible. Dodgers would have to throw in cash, Ethier is overpaid. But Murphy is over-rated, a borderline two-B that is post-peak for defense and will get worse there, no patience, not much power, and one elite skill (contact rate).

Eno Sarris: Nope. If they were going to make a crazy trade, I’d guess it would be for offense. Like the Stanton rumors. Also not likely, but a smidgen more.

Eno Sarris: There’s a projections leaderboard that will be populated with our projections that you can download. Dunno when that will be up.

Eno Sarris: It’s basically Vogelbach for Tabata, and unsure it matters, because then you switch the problem to the OF… maybe you think Polanco is ready sooner and you can fake Lambo/Decker in the OF for a month or two, Vogelbach is better at first? All depends on how Pirates’ prospect guys like Vogelbach, people split on him.

Some context regarding prohibition: prior to prohibition only men could get served alcohol. this was done in an establishment called a saloon. a large number of these men were pissing away their pay checks (or bags of gold or however they were paid back then) on alcohol leaving women and children starving and/or homeless. prohibition was seen as a way to release the grip that saloons had on men and, by extension, their families. to that extent, it worked. people (both men and women) now go to bars, bars which have things like ‘cut off’ rules. true, we did have to go through mob controlled liquor distribution and americans now drink hard liquor whereas before it was mostly beer, but, to a large extent, prohibition was a necessary and successful piece of public policy.

Eno Sarris: Look at his pitch peripherals and you’ll be left cold. I just traded him ($3) with $6 Derek Norris and $9 Jorge Soler for $53 Strasburg in ottoneu points FanGraphs staff league. And I’m going to try and trade him in another league.

Eno Sarris: I’d guess it’s more like 15-20 teams. Not all teams have $20m lying around. And for some teams, like the Giants, it’s hard for multiple owners to agree to send one big check like that. Most players sign and you pay them in little checks over the course of a year.

Eno Sarris: Two years of an excellent pitcher should get them at least one top 50. And another prospect or two. And yeah I think he’s excellent. By K-BB and GB, he’s excellent. Velocity, two really good secondary pitches, no reason for platoon splits.

Eno Sarris: .275/20/10? That’s kind, but not too kind, in my mind. They’d have to trade Andrus, and that seems unlikely.

Ron Shandler and Baseball HQ swears that Votto will go too high in next years drafts to be profitable because 37 HR not likely to return. However, at the same time, some of the research that has been done talks about opposite field home runs being a clear indication of power. He had a massive percentage of them last year (54%) whereas only >15% is considered a breakout candidate. Could there be power lurking?

Eno Sarris: He’s chosen his bed. I doubt he ever hits 35+ again. Oppo homers are a clear indication of power, but it’s easier to pull fly balls for homers. But Votto chose OBP over SLG, and that’s fine for his real-life value. I don’t think 37 coming back either, and Votto was only worth 15 bucks last year.

Eno Sarris: Age, production two years and three years ago (to avoid recency bias), bad results but okay processes (stuff like Lawrie’s contact rate), pedigree guys that are finally getting a shot (Mesoraco), and most of all: Opportunity.

Am I crazy for thinking OF, 1B, DH is a little crowded for the Astros? They have to play Springer, Singleton, and Grossman, right? Carter and Fowler also have to play. Castro DH’d a lot last year too.

Eno Sarris: They know this, which is why they gave every OF/1B/DH they had last year a month of a shot. They’ll do the same this year, maybe with fewer contenders and longer looks (100-150 PAs).

Beer Question: I was explaining how a baseball stat guy I follow also does statistical methods for beer (FanGraphs->BeerGraphs). I was asked, “how do you statistically quantify beer?” I was dumbfounded even though I have looked at BeerGraphs. How do you (at a high level)?

Eno Sarris: You can’t do it really. But what you can do is try to correctly evaluate what the crowd is saying. Tendencies from the crowd skew results, so we try to evaluate every beer against like beers (in style). Also, the hyped beer with 25 guys that love it, versus a Guinness — how you give credit for volume/amount of ratings is important. We haven’t figured it out, but we’re working on it. And we hope to be able to help you find more beers you like soon.

Is Mike Rizzo one of the best traders in baseball? Matt Capps for Wilson Ramos. Morse for AJ Cole, Blake Treinen and Ian Krol (as the PTBNL). Gave up a lot for Gio Gonzalez, but everyone he gave up has been worth a combined 6.1WAR and Gio has been worth 8.2 WAR. Meyer for 3 years of Span (who was a 3.6 win player during a down offensive year). And of course the Doug Fister deal. It’s hard for me to think of a trade he’s lost.

Eno Sarris: The Meyer deal will look different as soon as this year. I saw him in Arizona and love love love him. But right now he’s built a good team and a lot of that has to do with deals. As long as he doesn’t become a Ruin Tomorrow.

Eno Sarris: Probably the Citra Hops in there. If it’s ‘rotten’ could be an older beer. There are a few hops that smell/taste citrus. I recommend buying beers with the hops labeled on the bottle so that you can gain an understanding of which hops you like. It’s a big deal.

Eno Sarris: He’s worth a flier. There’s a pile of junk at second base in Colorado and a nice BABIP in spring might give him a chance. He doens’t have great plate discipline, but he has the tools to go .275/20/20, and that’s worth keeping an eye on. DJLM is all batting average and defense, so if he doesn’t get the BABIP love he’ll look worse.

Koji and Mujica have pretty much identical repertoirs. 88-90 fastball with a splitter that they throw a huge percentage of the time. Koji strikes out way more, but they both have elite walk rates. Not having seen Mujica much, what’s the difference? Does Koji get better deception? Or is his splitter that much better?

Eno Sarris: I think they both have elite plus plus fastball command, but Koji has better command of the splitter itself. But yeah, so close to same guy!

Eno Sarris: FWIW, when he left Texas, the book on Koji was that he had slight homeritis, which is what you hear about Mujica.

Eno Sarris: Man. If you think Myers could be close to Goldy in pure value, OFs > 1b in ottoneu. And Miller will be a good price for five years, unless arb hits him hard. If you need pitching, it’s not terrible. Goldy is best player in deal, though, so if you’re competitive, keep him and just try to find pitching.
