Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 12/5/13

11:44
Eno Sarris: See you in fifteen!

12:01
Eno Sarris: Lyrics of the day from one of my favorite songs of all time, and not just because it comes from the modern Brian Eno:

Bear in mind
we all fall behind
from time to time

Should be easy.

Comment From Jon
Happy Repeal Prohibition Day, Eno!

12:02
Eno Sarris: Sometimes, kids, the government makes good decisions.

12:02
Comment From Chris B.
Oh, cool. While convincing myself to love Will Smith, I found the Oliver five-year projections box on player pages. This changes … some things a little bit.

12:02
Eno Sarris: Those are pretty awesome.

12:02
Comment From JEB
Seriously, the winter meetings are going to be pretty pointless now, right?

12:02
Eno Sarris: Yeah now I’m not as excited to go… just kidding, I’m working on two pieces that aren’t so much about breaking news. And it’s a big bar meetup anyway.

12:03
Comment From Guest
What does Ubaldo get on the open market this offseason?

12:04
Eno Sarris: Crowd says 4/50, I think it could be 4/60 actually, given some inflation in market. I’d be a little scared if I was an AL team giving him four years. Not exactly the healthiest, even if the splitter might give him more years of good work.

12:04
Comment From Chooch Dunkadoo
Would you rather spend a day on the beach with Dave Cameron and Jeff Sullivan wearing bikinis + thongs that are 3 sizes too small or waive Mike Trout in a keeper league?

12:04
Comment From person hscer
It’s last week ago. I’m a Nats fan. I ask you “Lombardozzi, Krol and Ray for Fister, who says no?” Do you: a) ignore the question, b) reply with snark, c) say the Tigers, or d) other. (Cameron’s answer: “B, and then some mocking.”)

HEY ENO HOW COME MARSHMALLOW ISNT N REGRESSION

12:05
Eno Sarris: Killer opening interlude.

12:05
Comment From JEB
The AL Central is looking like it’s finally trying to compete with the East and West. Now if that pesky Cleveland team could sign a pitcher, that’d be fun…

12:05
Eno Sarris: They absolutely need to sign a pitcher. I like Kluber and Salazar, but they need more.

12:05
Comment From Jon
Thinking about keepers: Victorino before Jennings? Lawrie before ARam? (no prices, 5×5 H2H) Thanks!

12:06
Eno Sarris: Lawrie before A-Ram for me, just based on age and worst case scenarios. I think I still take Jennings’ age and upside, but Victo’s last season makes that one a pick em if you want.

12:06
Comment From Roy Munson
Dutton says Royals are still in Beltran. Is the the end for Lorenzo Cain again? How would he look in a Mets uniform? Would like it much better overpaying for the shell of Curtis Granderson.

12:07
Eno Sarris: I dunno. Is Aoki really a center fielder? unsure. But Beltran can’t DH all the time in KC… if it happens, yeah, Dyson and Cain, only one of them is going to have regular playing time. #gordontothird

12:07
Comment From Steve
Thanks for chatting, Eno! I know it doesn’t mean as much as traditional media lets on, but which spot in the Royals’ batting order makes the most sense for Aoki?

12:07
Eno Sarris: Leadoff, no? I don’t see why not.

12:07
Comment From Jeffy Wilponzi
Any chance I open up the madoff wallet to pay for Tanaka now that the posting fee is only $20 mil? If not, do you see any dark horse candidates with the new changes?

12:08
Eno Sarris: Nah, I doubt it. 3/45 with an option, hopefully team option, on Grandy probably. Maybe a small signing for SP5. And then they done, save a non-tender MiLB invite. I’d invite Kalish, Axford… Turner lol.

12:09
Comment From Miketron
Who would you prefer, Alex Wood or Drew Smyly now that he is slated to start again?

12:09
Comment From Jon
For 2014 (cost being equal – 5×5 H2H), would you go with Masterson, Cashner, Medlen, Tillman, Porcello or Alex Wood?

12:10
Eno Sarris: I’ll throw those together… Cash is first for me. Smyly’s changeup is actually pretty bad, so I’ll take Wood short-term over him if we know Wood is starting. Wood should get hurt someday with that delivery, but maybe not right away. Then Medlen, maybe he goes above Smyly too. Smyly has to transition back to starting, too. Porcello. Masterson definitely last. No, Tillman last.

12:11
Comment From Pirates Hurdles
You buying Moore’s moves for 2014? They still don’t have enough SP or bats to really contend do they? Is Aoki as a 1 year rental really any upgrade over Maxwell/Dyson?

12:11
Eno Sarris: Aoki’s probably an upgrade, but no I don’t love his moves.

12:11
Comment From JAL
Hey Eno. Cano goes to ____ for ____?

12:12
Eno Sarris: Yanks, more money than Ellsbury, less than Cano wanted.

12:12
Comment From Dan
Is there any chance at all that Robbie Ray is some sort of stud pitching prospect held in really high esteem league wide, and us amateurs just all missed the boat?

12:12
Eno Sarris: He’s a lefty, maybe some camps value that fact higher. And sure, the prospect evaluators in Detroit must like him more than others.

12:13
Comment From Jacquomini
Would you rather have Gomez or Beltre in a keep 8?

12:13
Eno Sarris: Damn they should both be kept. Probably Beltre, unless it’s a super deep league with five outfielders. Just on position and reliability and batting average.

12:13
Comment From Pirates Hurdles
Have you ever tried to save a very deep dynasty with a lot of manager defections. Have a 24 team league, with 40 man minor league rosters that I’d hate to punt. Any advice?

12:14
Eno Sarris: If it’s close to half, you’re screwed. If it’s like six or something, you can do it. I think you just need to find a friend group that wants in so you can get a crew all at once.

12:14
Comment From PJB
If the pirates sign no stud free agent (ha!) first baseman would the platoon of tabata and lambo (alternating 1st and RF with Gaby Sanchez) be a complete black hole or approximate the middling numbers from 2013?

12:15
Eno Sarris: I’ve got my Loney piece all written LOL so I hope the Pirates get him. If not… they’ve done what they’ve done with about 1 WAR per year from first base since 2008. That duo can put up one win… but two?

12:15
Comment From Jon
What are your thoughts on Jose Abreu vs Matt Adams in a keeper? Both are draftable and I’m planning on targeting one or the other for my CI spot. (H2H 5×5)

12:16
Eno Sarris: I think Abreu can .275 with 25-30 homer, and Adams is about the same. I think Adams is the safer choice (although his batting average could plummet since he pulls the ball on the ground a ton and got shifted), but Abreu has a bit more upside in that park.

12:16
Comment From who needs singles when you can walk
Billy Hamilton tools + Adam Dunn tools = (billam dunnilton) 8, 9, 10 WAR?

12:17
Eno Sarris: That’d be kind of awesome. Could he switch hit? And would he refine those tools? Because there’s a window there where he could switch hit with power and patience and still hit .240 and make bad plays in the outfield lol.

12:17
Comment From Howard
General baseball question: does good command imply good control? Can you have good command with bad control?

12:18
Comment From Dave
I am officially finished college as of yesterday! What beer should I toast with?

12:18
Eno Sarris: oops . DAve: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/6984/39090 Although that’s mean. Just have a good cheap IPA from your locale lol. Save the cash for the next year of joblessness. God I’m such a downer. Have a good day!

12:19
Eno Sarris: Howard: I think it’s usually the other way around, you can have good control but bad command, implying that you can put the ball in the zone, but then are hittable in the zone because it goes down broadstreet sometimes. if you had good command, you could put it where you wanted. Maybe sometimes you’d put it outside the zone on purpose and it would look like you had bad control?

12:20
Comment From Dave
Do you think Brad Lincoln could make any kind of impact for the Phils? Better than signing Mujica right?

12:21
Eno Sarris: I mean Mujica is a good pitcher, but I have some worries. For one, that’s big money for a guy that had shoulder fatigue last year. Also, two years. Also, that’s now a TON of splitfingers in one pen. Does that matter? I wonder if it’ll make both of them more hittable. Uehara and Mujica throw the pitch more than their fastball, and nobody else does.

12:21
Eno Sarris: Oh, Lincoln. Eh, projecting releivers is nigh impossible. That’s one takeaway that I didn’t really emphasize in my non-tender piece: relievers are the non-tenders that are better deals.

12:21
Comment From kevinthecomic
has anyone, to your knowledge, used classification statistics (such as k-means clustering) to predict a player’s output? — something akin to identifying players with similar minor league and/or college numbers to predict their mlb career?

12:22
Eno Sarris: Mostly seen that with pitch classification, but have wanted to do this with baseball players for sure.

12:22
Eno Sarris: Luded

12:23
Comment From Guest
So how good is Will Smith going to be as a starter. Is that increase in SwStr% soley due to the fact that he moved to the pen? How much of a problem is it that he didn’t throw many change-ups last year? I want to like him but it doesn’t look very realistic that he will last in a rotation, even a bad one like Milwaukee currently has.

12:23
Eno Sarris: Worried about that. He has bad splits. Maybe they see something they can fix with the changeup.

12:23
Comment From Guest
How much of Choo’s improvement last year is attributable to the Reds lineup/ballpark? How big of a fantasy impact will there be if he lands on a bad team in a bigger park (Mariners) vs. a better team in a smaller park (Tigers, Orioles)

12:24
Eno Sarris: Sorta big for him, actually. He was practically same hitter, park gave him a homer or three. Yanks would be awesome. Orioles.

12:24
Comment From Sadwick
A lot of people seem to hate the Aoki trade for the Brewers. Aoki is a good player, but nothing amazing and at 31 so he’s probably not going to get better. Smith is only a reliever, but was a starter in the minors and has 6 years of control. Overvaluing Aoki, undervaluing Smith, or spot on?

12:24
Eno Sarris: Feels like they could have gotten a smidge more. Smith looks like a reliever to me.

12:24
Comment From Et Tu, Brute?
To what extent should changes in batted ball type (LD%, GB% up with FB % down) be taken into consideration when explaining a rise in BABIP?

12:25
Eno Sarris: Very much so. Especially since batted ball rates stabilize faster — you can believe them in smaller samples. LD is tricky, that’s a hard stat and it’s done by eye and has a lot of noise in it. But if a guys GB/FB has changed significantly and so has his BABIP, you might regress it less heavily to the mean than you would otherwise.

12:26
Comment From Ted
Is Ellsbury destined to haunt the Yankees for years to come? Is signing free agents really their only plan at this point?

12:26
Eno Sarris: Top 10 draft picks have a much better outcome than the lower rounds, and they haven’t figured out the Cards’ magic of drafting lower-ceiling more-likely-to-be-productive guys to fill in the problem spots.

12:27
Comment From CPins
Would Daniel Murphy be of any interest to the Dodgers in a deal for Andre Ethier? He came up as a 1B/3B. If so, would Dodgers be willing to throw in any cash?

12:28
Eno Sarris: This is unterrible. Dodgers would have to throw in cash, Ethier is overpaid. But Murphy is over-rated, a borderline two-B that is post-peak for defense and will get worse there, no patience, not much power, and one elite skill (contact rate).

12:28
Comment From Guest
I’m asking every expert this (and yes, I’m considering you an expert): It’s extremely unlikely that the Pirates trade for Price, yes? Yes they have the pieces and could use the pitching, but even if you just consider salary reasons, I don’t see the Pirates as a legitimate option.

12:28
Eno Sarris: Nope. If they were going to make a crazy trade, I’d guess it would be for offense. Like the Stanton rumors. Also not likely, but a smidgen more.

12:28
Comment From hayden
Do you know if there’s a way to pull Steamer projections (and others when they’re released) on custom leaderboards? Is that a feature that’s coming?

12:29
Eno Sarris: There’s a projections leaderboard that will be populated with our projections that you can download. Dunno when that will be up.

12:29
Comment From WillieBloomquistButtCyst
Do y’all write the skeletons of your articles preemptively. For example, did some have maybe the first 3 paragraphs written about Jacoby Elisbury when he was a free agent, and then they finished it after he signed.

12:29
Eno Sarris: I just admitted to writing the Loney thing to the Bucs, but that was yesterday when it really looked like he was going there. Will have to edit heavily if he doesn’t go.

12:29
Comment From Eminor3rd
LCD Soundsystem. My question is just to ask you to please explain to me the appeal of LCD Soundsystem. It’s among the most boring music I’ve ever heard. 7 minute loops. Nothing ever happens! Please help

12:30
Eno Sarris: I don’t think you’d like the second half of Brian Eno’s career then.

12:30
Comment From Matt
Is Dayton Moore essentially copying the Cardinals model of building a lineup? Sacrificing power and walks for LOTS of contact.

12:30
Eno Sarris: Giants did that and it worked. It’s zigging when the league is zagging, for sure. I’m a little more worried about that Royals pitching staff.

12:31
Comment From Tball
Every winter the media proclaims an offseason winner and that team proceeds to suck. Have there been any clear cut winners so far and what are the chances those additions end up costing the team? IMO it looks like the Yankees are adding alot of pieces and are a few away from being media darlings.

12:32
Eno Sarris: And Ellsbury could pull a hammy, ARod gone all year, Jeter sleeps on his neck wrong, and all of a sudden it’s Kelly Johnson, Eduardo Nunez, a Nix brother, and Teixeira backed by Gardner, Soriano and good luck.

12:32
Comment From GSon
Minor deal.. but.. The cubs send Don Vogelbach & Alberto Cabrera to the Pirates for Jose Tabata and Andrew Oliver. Who hangs up or do they make this deal?

12:34
Eno Sarris: It’s basically Vogelbach for Tabata, and unsure it matters, because then you switch the problem to the OF… maybe you think Polanco is ready sooner and you can fake Lambo/Decker in the OF for a month or two, Vogelbach is better at first? All depends on how Pirates’ prospect guys like Vogelbach, people split on him.

12:34
Comment From Tony
What reasonable offer from the Mets would have topped the Royals for Aoki?

12:34
Eno Sarris: Familia? Maybe another high-A arm? Problem is that Aoki’s only signed for one year, and 2014 is a bit more important for the Mets IMO.

12:35

Some context regarding prohibition: prior to prohibition only men could get served alcohol. this was done in an establishment called a saloon. a large number of these men were pissing away their pay checks (or bags of gold or however they were paid back then) on alcohol leaving women and children starving and/or homeless. prohibition was seen as a way to release the grip that saloons had on men and, by extension, their families. to that extent, it worked. people (both men and women) now go to bars, bars which have things like ‘cut off’ rules. true, we did have to go through mob controlled liquor distribution and americans now drink hard liquor whereas before it was mostly beer, but, to a large extent, prohibition was a necessary and successful piece of public policy.

12:35
Eno Sarris: one man lude.

12:35
Comment From Guest
What is there to like about Tillman? I feel like he has peaked.

12:36
Eno Sarris: Look at his pitch peripherals and you’ll be left cold. I just traded him ($3) with $6 Derek Norris and $9 Jorge Soler for $53 Strasburg in ottoneu points FanGraphs staff league. And I’m going to try and trade him in another league.

12:36
Comment From ja
Wwll all 30 teams bid the maximum on Tanaka? What do you think he eventually signs for?

12:37
Eno Sarris: I’d guess it’s more like 15-20 teams. Not all teams have $20m lying around. And for some teams, like the Giants, it’s hard for multiple owners to agree to send one big check like that. Most players sign and you pay them in little checks over the course of a year.

12:37
Comment From hayden
What’s your take on what’s happening in Oakland?

12:38
Eno Sarris: He’s got a one-year lease on a very unique ballpark and may have to change his strategy a bit if the new park plays different. And they were close last year, so he’s going after the window.

12:38
Comment From Ian
If I have Trout in the 23rd, Billy Hamilton in the 27th, Encarnacion in the 15th, Chris Davis in the 17th, Goldschmidt in the 12th, and Segura in the 25th, who do I cut in a keep-five? No one will trade. More to the point, is my victory assured?

12:39
Eno Sarris: It’s Hamilton or Edwin Chicken Wing there. Great list. Hamilton more variance, Edwin less upside and costlier…

12:39
Comment From Jacquomini
Going to have to drop one of Jason Castro, Drew Smyly, EY Jr. before I can make moves this offseason. Who should I cut?

12:39
Eno Sarris: EY JR. best as a sub in real life.

12:39
Comment From person hscer
if the Lerners don’t mind a $300,000,000 payroll in 2018, they could sign Cano. Better infield: 1b LaRoche 2b Rendon ss Desmond 3b Zimmerman or 1b Zimmerman 2b Cano ss Desmond 3b Rendon?

12:39
Eno Sarris: Obviously the second batch is a better infield LOL. Just… that’s a lot of money.

12:39
Comment From THE NARRATIVE
First story on MLB’s scrolling story feed right now: “Chemistry lesson: Sox teach value of vetsAfter ‘glue guys’ played a big role in Boston’s title run, the market for veteran leaders should thrive.” Oy. How about “solid players played a big role….”?

I know saves are silly, but I heard Nathan referred to as the active saves leader. Which is true. But I’m sad that Rivera’s retired.

12:40
Eno Sarris: Sad interlude guys.

Comment From The Oriole Bird
Jemile Weeks is organizational depth, no?

12:40
Eno Sarris: No, I think he gets a chance at second. It’s poop or get off the pottie time for Schoop pronounced scope and Weeks is the guy that’ll goose him.

12:41
Comment From Joe
Hi Eno, Are you a runner? I seem to recall you mentioning something about that. If so, how much do you run?

12:41
Eno Sarris: I quit. I get bored. I play basketball now for workouts. about a 40/50/80 guy in practice, that drops down to 30/40 in games.

12:41
Comment From Michael Choice
What does 2014 hold in store for me now that I’m a Ranger?

12:42
Eno Sarris: I’m really interested in this, and not only because I own him a bit. His power dropped as he advanced, perhaps because he was trying to make more contact. Now he gets a real nice power park. But he’s probably not a CFer if Oakland let him go for a song. Do they give him a shot in the OF right away? If so, he’s an interesting sleeper already.

10x Mixed, what round do you keep Carlos Gomez?

12:44
Eno Sarris: Anything below fifth round, he should be an easy top 50 guy.

12:44
Comment From Ringtone Composer
Jayson Werth led the NL in wRC+ last year (min. 400 PA). Weird. Someone in yesterday’s chat pointed out that the 4 yrs $80 mill left on his contract doesn’t look so crazypants now. It’s at least debateable.

12:44
Eno Sarris: Yeah but he’s old, and BABIP had something to do with that. Still a crazy contract imo.

12:44
Comment From Jon
Without spoiling your piece, think Loney would be a good signing for the Buccos? How many years/dollars would you go?

12:45
Eno Sarris: I was working on 2/15 and liked it. 3/30 is a little tougher, but okay.

12:45
Eno Sarris: And yeah they need some help there.

Is anyone’s rotation better than the Nats in 2014?

12:46
Eno Sarris: It’s super deep and excellent. I won’t be picking the Braves again in that division.

12:46
Comment From The Oriole Bird
Over/under Bryce Harper WAR in 2014: 6.1

12:47
Eno Sarris: Both projection systems have him under five, and though I like him better than that, I’ve learned that I have to use the projections to rein in my enthusiasm. I might take over 4.7, or even 5.1, but 6.1…

12:47
Comment From Steve
If the Mets land Granderson, do they have a shot to win 80 next year?

12:48
Eno Sarris: Yes I think so. They’ve been hanging out in the mid-seventies and Wheeler looks like he’ll be good. Lagares was a find. And they’re not done.

12:48
Comment From GSon
Are Cubbie fans off their rocker to think Samardzija will bring in a haul that includes two top 50’s and at least one other “prospect”?

12:49
Eno Sarris: Two years of an excellent pitcher should get them at least one top 50. And another prospect or two. And yeah I think he’s excellent. By K-BB and GB, he’s excellent. Velocity, two really good secondary pitches, no reason for platoon splits.

12:49
Comment From Alex
The Tigers bullpen seems much worse overall even with Nathan right now. What should they do?

12:49
Eno Sarris: They need more. More relievers.

12:49
Comment From Matt
Realistic upside projection for Profar this year? Think he’s stuck at 2b long-term or still a chance he gets to SS eventually?

12:50
Eno Sarris: .275/20/10? That’s kind, but not too kind, in my mind. They’d have to trade Andrus, and that seems unlikely.

12:50
Comment From Joe
Ron Shandler and Baseball HQ swears that Votto will go too high in next years drafts to be profitable because 37 HR not likely to return. However, at the same time, some of the research that has been done talks about opposite field home runs being a clear indication of power. He had a massive percentage of them last year (54%) whereas only >15% is considered a breakout candidate. Could there be power lurking?

12:51
Eno Sarris: He’s chosen his bed. I doubt he ever hits 35+ again. Oppo homers are a clear indication of power, but it’s easier to pull fly balls for homers. But Votto chose OBP over SLG, and that’s fine for his real-life value. I don’t think 37 coming back either, and Votto was only worth 15 bucks last year.

12:51
Eno Sarris: In batting average leagues.

12:51
Comment From Jon
Any chance the Mariners & Rays agree on a trade for Price that does NOT involve Taijuan Walker? Scares me the thought of repeating the Erik Bedard fiasco from 2008

12:52
Eno Sarris: Lotta people worried about this. Price feels like he’s better than Bedard, and Walker is a pitcher not a position player, so it’s not quite the same thing. But is Price what the Mariners need?

Beer Question: What is it you like about Saisons?

12:53
Eno Sarris: The pepper doesn’t attract everyone, but what I like is that saisons are lighter than IPAs and Stouts, but have more taste than Pilsners and Lagers. It’s like having a light Belgian. And Farmhouse / wild yeast appeals to me.

12:54
Comment From Jon
Favorite winter ale / Christmas beer?

12:54

Comment From SteveV
Better risk Abreau 6/$68 or Napoli at say 4/$60?

12:55
Eno Sarris: Napoli has the health risk, but he’s a surer thing with regard to production and it’s a shorter contract. I think I take him.

12:55
Comment From Joe
Mujica was only good because he had Busch behind him. Fenway will rewake his gopheritis.

12:55
Eno Sarris: I think there’s some risk of that. He throws the splitter 65% of the time. If people sit on the 89 mph fastball…

12:55
Comment From Marty
Everyone is really down on Granderson, but prior to freak injuries, guy was an excellent power hitter. Wouldn’t a 2 year deal, and move to Corner OF be a laudable for a team like the Mets?

12:56
Eno Sarris: I’d go to 3/45 and be happy actually. It’s not like that deal kills your franchise, and it could really help.

12:56
Comment From Eastern NC
What would a trip to Safeco do to Cano’s power? Same as Beltre’s?

12:56
Eno Sarris: They moved some fences since then. But you’d have to take some off the top for sure.

12:56
Comment From Joe
Morneau fantasy relevant now that he is at Coors? Looking at his opposite field power from last year (0% HR to opposite field), it doesn’t look good.

12:56
Eno Sarris: .280 with 20 homers? That’s fantasy relevant. As long as he stays on the field.

12:56
Comment From juan pierres mustache
pretty sure you could have nine Kojis pitch every day, one for each inning, and hitters would still never figure out his splitter

12:57
Eno Sarris: Could be true. I mean, Dickey throws the knuckler all day every day.

12:57
Comment From Eastern NC
What are some factors you look at to predict next year’s breakouts?

Vacuum: keep Strasburg, Tulo, or Machado?

12:58
Eno Sarris: Tulo. Tulo plus replacement level SS hits the highest value mark.

12:58
Comment From Joe
Am I crazy for thinking OF, 1B, DH is a little crowded for the Astros? They have to play Springer, Singleton, and Grossman, right? Carter and Fowler also have to play. Castro DH’d a lot last year too.

12:59
Eno Sarris: They know this, which is why they gave every OF/1B/DH they had last year a month of a shot. They’ll do the same this year, maybe with fewer contenders and longer looks (100-150 PAs).

12:59
Comment From J Peterman
Haven’t heard you mention Duda in a while. Is he still a thing you think about?

1:00
Eno Sarris: Love the handle. yes, yes I think about it often. Because right now the Mets have two 1Bs and need to figure that out. I’d love to know what names they are looking at for Ike.

1:00
Comment From Jon
Pirates should think about dealing Tony Watson or Justin Wilson, right? Young, cost-controlled, hard-throwing lefty RP could bring something back, and two is probably a luxury they don’t need. Correct?

1:00
Eno Sarris: Except that they are contending, and lefty RPs don’t usually bring back MLB talent. Not that you’re wrong, just that the timing is off.

What would you say is a fair price for Heyward in Otto?

1:02
Eno Sarris: a little higher in points, maybe 30+ there, as high as 35+ for a contender looking for a big year. 4×4 lowest, maybe 25+. 5×5 somewhere in between.

1:03
Comment From Joe
Have 1st pick next year in 5×5. I am thinking of Cabrera over Trout because of position scarcity and track record. I still am skeptical of Trout’s inflated BABIP and the possibility for large BA regression, his power with a fairly average batted ball distance (~282 ft), and speed being available late in drafts. Am I crazy?

1:03
Eno Sarris: Age and DL history have me leaning Trout. And speed without power is available later, but getting 20+/30+ from the same lineup slot is not.

1:03
Comment From Dan
Should the mets give Granderson a 4th year?

1:04
Eno Sarris: If it lowers the AAV closer to $10m, eh. Just don’t want to do 4/60 and just give it to him with no qualifiers. Could be under 2 wins in year two or three fairly easily.

1:04
Comment From payroll
whats tanaka’s xfip after his first year on the yanks?

1:05
Eno Sarris: He’s not as good as Yu in my mind. If he goes to a small park in the AL, I could see some homers. But you smartly ask about xFIP, so I’ll go for around 3.50.

1:05
Comment From Joe
Beer Question: I was explaining how a baseball stat guy I follow also does statistical methods for beer (FanGraphs->BeerGraphs). I was asked, “how do you statistically quantify beer?” I was dumbfounded even though I have looked at BeerGraphs. How do you (at a high level)?

1:06
Eno Sarris: You can’t do it really. But what you can do is try to correctly evaluate what the crowd is saying. Tendencies from the crowd skew results, so we try to evaluate every beer against like beers (in style). Also, the hyped beer with 25 guys that love it, versus a Guinness — how you give credit for volume/amount of ratings is important. We haven’t figured it out, but we’re working on it. And we hope to be able to help you find more beers you like soon.

I’m interested in starting an ottoneu league for the upcoming season, but I only have a handful of friends who I can count on as reliable owners. Where’s a good place to find reliable owners who I can reasonably trust to remain active?

1:07
Eno Sarris: There is a page where you can claim existing teams that have been dropped. And I think a place where people get together to make leagues. Ask @ottoneu or me on twitter, we’ll help.

1:07
Comment From Nick
I know it’s early for rankings, but is Darvish potentially the number 2 pitcher behind Kershaw in 2014?

1:08
Eno Sarris: Probably. The only thing that really worries me about Yu is health.

1:08
Comment From JustAGuy
Do you think the Cardinals use of young starting pitchers in relief roles helps their long term development or is it just something they have been doing based on their surplus of starting talent in comparison to their bullpen. Will more start following their example?

1:08
Eno Sarris: That’s been going for a really long time. Just looks nicer when the arms as quality as their’s have been.

1:08
Comment From juan pierres mustache
What’s the % chance that the Cardinals identify who they want to draft years in advance, find incriminating photographs of those players, blackmail them into playing worse in college, and then draft them lower than they should be drafted? Because come on.

Is Mike Rizzo one of the best traders in baseball? Matt Capps for Wilson Ramos. Morse for AJ Cole, Blake Treinen and Ian Krol (as the PTBNL). Gave up a lot for Gio Gonzalez, but everyone he gave up has been worth a combined 6.1WAR and Gio has been worth 8.2 WAR. Meyer for 3 years of Span (who was a 3.6 win player during a down offensive year). And of course the Doug Fister deal. It’s hard for me to think of a trade he’s lost.

1:11
Eno Sarris: The Meyer deal will look different as soon as this year. I saw him in Arizona and love love love him. But right now he’s built a good team and a lot of that has to do with deals. As long as he doesn’t become a Ruin Tomorrow.

1:11
Comment From Preston
What do you think of Kelly Johnson’s defense at 3b, is he a good enough hitter/defender to be a league average 3b?

I’ve noticed a lot of beers with some sort of “hop” in their name have a grapefruitty finish. Some taste like rotten grapefruit and linger, while some finish clean. Where’s that flavor coming from?

1:13
Eno Sarris: Probably the Citra Hops in there. If it’s ‘rotten’ could be an older beer. There are a few hops that smell/taste citrus. I recommend buying beers with the hops labeled on the bottle so that you can gain an understanding of which hops you like. It’s a big deal.

Comment From Seymour
Murphy would be uber UT player and hedge against Guerrero sucking/not being ready at 2B. It’s not a bad suggestion if the LADs throw in 25M for Ethier. Almost better than throwing lots of stupid money at Grandy and losing 2nd rd pick. Mets would need to add legit 2Bman tho. Talk of EY at 2B ridiculous.

Zack Wheeler, Michael Wacha, Mat Latos, Taijuan Walker….16-team keeper league, can only keep 1 of them…whom do you keep?

1:14

1:15
Comment From BJB
Hey Eno, haven’t tuned into your chats for a while, sorry – what are your feelings these days on Rutledge? I was able to take him for next to nothing in my dynasty league ($2M salary, $165M cap), but is he even worth that? Thanks, really hope you see this.

1:15
Eno Sarris: He’s worth a flier. There’s a pile of junk at second base in Colorado and a nice BABIP in spring might give him a chance. He doens’t have great plate discipline, but he has the tools to go .275/20/20, and that’s worth keeping an eye on. DJLM is all batting average and defense, so if he doesn’t get the BABIP love he’ll look worse.

What are the Mets doing here? Looks like they are about to blow their budget on yrs 33-36 of Grandy (Cameron’s #2 biggest landmine of the FA class)! There will be nothing left to fill in rotation, pen, SS…. AHHHHHH

1:20
Eno Sarris: I don’t hate Granderson as much as Dave, and OF is a need for them. I’ll take the OLIVER projection and 3+ wins from Grandy next year in the corner OF, making 3/45 reasonable. No way that’s a killer. AS for their budget, it would leave them with $5-7m, probably for an SP5. And Ruben at short, who I also don’t hate, and think can be a 1.5-2 win player, particularly now that he’s working on his conditioning. Only thing that I hold against Sandy right now is talking crap on Ruben in the media. Silly.

Koji and Mujica have pretty much identical repertoirs. 88-90 fastball with a splitter that they throw a huge percentage of the time. Koji strikes out way more, but they both have elite walk rates. Not having seen Mujica much, what’s the difference? Does Koji get better deception? Or is his splitter that much better?

1:32
Eno Sarris: I think they both have elite plus plus fastball command, but Koji has better command of the splitter itself. But yeah, so close to same guy!

1:32

1:53
Eno Sarris: Hosmer younger, similar, plays better D. But you like em young, so you knew that.

Comment From Pat
Annoyed Mets fan here, how could the Mets not beat Will Smith in an offer? Do you think the Mets need to get creative here and ship off solid unspectacular Dillon Gee for a solid bat?

1:53
Eno Sarris: Yeah, Aoki might have been okay, for one year. Gee’s better than his results last year, IMO.

So based on one of your announced Ottoneu trades, are you buying Strasburg this year?

1:55
Eno Sarris: It’s iffy for me to keep Stras at that price, but I wasn’t going to keep anyone but $3 Tillman on that list so, I thought, might as well take him. I do like Strasburg a lot. one year, he’ll be healthy all year and win the Cy Young.

Soria or Scheppers for saves in Texas. My thinking: Soria will be a top closer again and is natural choice.

1:56
Eno Sarris: Bet they sign another candidate. Soria gets first shot, Scheppers as backup plan.

I don’t get why you say Shark is excellent. Three years in a row with FIP in mid- to upper-threes.

1:59
Eno Sarris: Homeritis, and I don’t believe he has to have homeritis. Isn’t his xFIP much better?

Beer Question: Are home brews always terrible or can you “catch lightning in a bottle” quite literally?

Eno Sarris: My favorite home brewers are opening up a brewery in San Jose as we speak.

CF next year, Eaton or Fowler?

2:01
Eno Sarris: Tasty. I’ll take the chance on Eaton here. Similar BA/OBP, can’t be that hard for Eaton to hit 15 homers in the desert, and yeah, he might only steal 20, but he’s also stolen way way more than 20 in the minors.

Is Khris Davis now someone to target? With a full time gig guarenteed, had some crazy power late last year

I’m in a second year classic 4×4 league. I was offered Wil Myers ($20) and Shelby Miller ($10) for Goldschimdt ($19). Do you make this trade?

My opinion: keep Goldy for now, if you’re not contending mid-year you can probably get a similar deal from someone who is.
