Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 12/8/16

1:17
Eno Sarris: home healthy and feeling kinda funky

12:06
Everything’s On Sale!: White Sox have a top 5 system after all this? Top 3?

12:07
Eno Sarris: I *loved* the Boston return. I’m down on Giolito and Lopez, though. Mediocre spin and movement. Flat velocity and hope.

12:07
Jake: If you’re the Yankees, why sign Chapman? They’re a couple years away from being very good. And,if they get there, 1) Chapman will have declined and 2) If Chapman is great, he’ll opt out after year 3. The Yankees are assuming a lot of risk for minimal reward.

12:07
Eno Sarris: I dunno, Bird and Sanchez are going to hit the ground running. They could be good as soon as this year.

12:07
Erik: So the Eaton trade seems like an overpay unless one of two things are true: 1) Teams have stopped undervaluing defense. (Heyward’s contract last year would support that.) 2) Giolito never had the value he was perceived to have by fans. Which of those (or both) do you think it is?

12:08
Eno Sarris: I’d say that it’s both but for 2) it’s more “he doesn’t have the value he was perceived to have earlier any more now that we have MLB data”

12:08
Bork: So all the excitement over the past few days has led us to the real highlight of the week, the Rule 5 Draft. What do you think about what happened today? Have a few posts lined up for us?

12:08
Eno Sarris: yawn

12:08
Lightning Round!: Will the marlins move Ramos if they sign Jansen?

12:08
Eno Sarris: Later, when they are not in the playoff hunt, I guess.

12:08
Dougie: Chances the Dodgers miss out on both Jansen and Turner?

12:08
Eno Sarris: Low.

12:08
Russell: Dusty Baker comes up to you and gives you a firm squeeze on the ass, how do the both of you react?

12:09
Eno Sarris: I tweak his nipple. I actually know him fairly well because we’ve worked on the First Base Foundation together — it’s a group that helps disadvantaged kids play travel ball.

12:09
Roadhog: What the hell are the A’s doing? I’m a diehard and I’m worried.

12:09
Eno Sarris: Waiting to get something at a discount I guess. Some of their young guys are coming to fruition, so they just need to find a good way to spend a few million.

12:10
ARAlvarado13: why is al avila being so boring?

12:10
Eno Sarris: Been trained in boring by a baseball family. Actually, that team may get better by not selling. They could win a wild card by beating up on the bottom of their division.

12:11
Erik: I see a lot of similarities between Adam Eaton and good Jason Heyward–above-average wRC+ despite only average power, some value on the basepaths, and elite RF defense. Is there significant risk that he collapses just like Heyward did? Or were Heyward’s issues unique to Heyward alone, and not indicative of some risk in that player type in general?

12:11
Eno Sarris: I think Heyward’s swing comes and goes and is more complicated.

12:11
CamdenWarehouse: This has been a more active Winter Meetings than normal, right?

12:11
Eno Sarris: It had to be. FA list was terrible, so they had to make more moves.

12:11
JP: I think that funk was a backing track to an adult film

12:12
Eno Sarris: BOW CHIGGA BOW BOOWWWWWW

12:12
RABBINICAL COLLEGE GUY: Would Maddon use Davis the same way he used Chapman in a postseason series if Davis is fully healthy in 2017?

12:12
Eno Sarris: I think some of that was the fact that both Rondon and Strop lost their stuff late season and Maddon didn’t trust them, so there’s a lot of moving parts to that question.

12:13
Guest: Is Soler’s bat good enough to be the Royal’s DH, or do they need to start getting rid of outfielders?

12:13
Eno Sarris: They said they’d play him at LF and RF and Dyson is a fine backup CF.

12:13
Minty: You guys helped me win back to back. Have Bryant/Rizzo/Arenado/Betts/Correa/Beni. Trade 3 yrs of my Springer for 5 of his Dahl? OBP equally cheap.

12:14
Eno Sarris: I’ll take the steals and extra years Dahl offers.

12:14
Roadhog: The A’s not doing anything with the Rule-V draft kinda pisses me off.

12:14
Eno Sarris: not doing anything at all so far!

12:14
TJ: When you were in college did you drink fine craft beers or swill like the rest of us?

12:15
Eno Sarris: I dunno! Mostly Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. But not like a huge variety of different craft beers.

12:15
Erik: What team’s passivity so far is the most frustrating? Whose passivity makes the most sense?

12:16
Eno Sarris: I actually think the A’s passivity makes sense. They don’t have money, they need the values to fall to them. But the Dodgers… maybe they are more constrained by money that it seems to me.

12:16
Drew: Correa is the most expensive player in my league. Is it frowned upon to throw him back in the dynasty auction and try to sign him for less?

12:16
Eno Sarris: That’s fantasy baseball.

12:16
CamdenWarehouse: What’s going on this morning? Rosenthal, Heyman, and Passan’s twitters have gone all but silent.

12:17
Eno Sarris: Sleeping it off. Also, I saw Sabean on my flight home yesterday afternoon, so there’s probably a few decision makers en route right now.

12:17
Kiermaier’s Piercing Blue Eyes: Chris Archer is unsurprisingly drawing interest, and the Rays’ price is predictably high. How does the organization reconcile trading its ace while ostensibly competing for a wild card spot?

12:17
Eno Sarris: They are *always* coming and going at the same time.

12:18
Hung Ho Gang: So will Kang’s latest indiscretion impact his playing time at all?

12:18
Eno Sarris: It hasn’t yet so

12:18
apple jack smith sr: eno leaving us out to dry smh

12:18
Eno Sarris: Sorry for being late!

12:19
Erik: Two ways to look at the Soler/Davis trade: 1) The fact that Soler was worth only one year of a potentially injury-broken reliever means his value has completely evaporated. 2) The fact that Soler brought back a potentially elite reliever all by himself means he had far more value than we thought. Since both of those sort of make sense, that must mean it’s a very fair deal, right?

12:20
Eno Sarris: It’s a floor ceiling thing, but it’s also just one year of Davis. They could have gotten a few higher ceiling guys that wouldn’t help now, but instead their keeping a toe in the water for this year and getting a piece that will help them now and has some ceiling left.

12:20
Johnny5Alive: Look, I know the mets want to dump bruce and not eat money. just suck it up sandy you made a bad deal last year. jesus.

12:20
Eno Sarris: Yes. Just get the $13 million back.

12:21
Carl: Get to any DC Brau?

12:22
Eno Sarris: I was sick and only drank one night, so I had Perpetual IPA from Troegs, Burley Oak’s Sour Chicky, and a Lucky 7 Porter from Evolution, which were all good and local. I’ve had some DC Brau before.

12:22
GZA: Would it make sense for the Rockies to pursue Quintana? Their hitting is stacked, and they always have trouble bringing in pitching. It seems like it would be worth the prospects to give them a top notch starter to go with Gray while the hitters are there.

12:22
Eno Sarris: They are absolutely going to go after a pitcher with an outfielder now.

12:22
JKD: I’ll admit – I’m kind of surprised that even reasonably analytically well-versed folks here and among baseball writers, have been panning the Adam Eaton trade by just looking at talent and only off-handedly mentioning Eaton’s contract. The contract (on a productive player) is the whole thing! It’s the surplus value! That, plus the reality that the Nats need production *now*, that it’s not a sure thing they’ll get it from the pitchers, that they don’t have much place to put it anyways, and that you need to discount future possible (as opposed to probable) production more heavily… it’s baffling.

12:22
Eno Sarris: He’s not a six win guy, probably. But a three-to-four win guy on a $10m a year contract is great. And Gio and Lopez aren’t as good as people think.

12:22
Forresg: Why is Jarrod Dyson’s value seemingly so low? 3win player last year & 10.5 over last 4 years as a part timer. Only gonna make around $2 million next year, shouldn’t his surplus value theoretically be with more than a Wade Davis, but won’t bring anywhere near that back in return?

12:23
Eno Sarris: I think being a part timer has helped him smooth out some issues, he might be more exposed as a starter. Also, he’s over 30.

12:23
NutButters: I will be monitoring the performance of this chat based upon the roy ayers youtube view count.

12:23
Eno Sarris: You take what you want from this chat. Some come for the ludes, some for the music, some for the beer, some for the fantasy, and then a couple for the real baseball.

12:24
Shane: Should we be concerned about Sale’s drop in velocity this past year?

12:24
Eno Sarris: I actually talked to someone inside baseball about that. They said that Sale saw Verlander’s struggles and saw that injury risk goes up with velocity, so he purposefuly started pitching at a lower velocity so that he would be good for longer.

12:24
Maxamuz: Mitch Moreland is the Red Sox starting 1B. I’m not sure how I feel about that.

12:25
Eno Sarris: Eh, it’s not so straight forward. Hanley will play there, Moreland will sit some, there’s offseason left.

12:25
Erik: I had thought the Phillies might be players for some of the higher-reward bounceback candidates (like Carlos Gomez), given that they have so much money to spend. So far, all they’ve gotten is Joaquin Benoit. Who would be the biggest bounceback candidates left on the market? And do you see the Phillies going for them?

12:25
Eno Sarris: They’ll get the outfielder that’s left without a seat when the music ends.

12:25
Always Underdogs: was the EE to the Indians talk happening at all in person at the meetings or only alive on CLE twitter? Do Indians need a blockbuster signing to repeat as AL champs or are they good to go w perhaps Napoli back? (Sick of hearing that Bo Socks now faves)

12:25
Eno Sarris: There was some talk about it. Maybe they’ll spend, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

12:26
JBJ: Carrasco or Verlander in a pts league next year

12:26
Eno Sarris: Verlander!

12:26
Johnny5Alive: Also, what do the mets do? Given they are built around injured pitching and old position players… their window is closing. its already almost impossible to compete with the cubs, nats and dodgers, but the mets are a 1B, 3B, CF, C, and BP short of being good. If the only move they make is to sign cespedes, its almost a move that wasnt worth making

12:26
Eno Sarris: They should spend on something. A reliever probably. Maybe get Ziegler. Get a real damn center fielder.

12:26
Watty: I recently saw you interviewed by Brian Kenny on MLB Network. Many years ago, BK used to work at a regional cable network near where I grew up and interviewed my dad (a high school coach) quite often. By the transitive property, are you now my dad? Should I tip my cap and call you my daddy?

12:26
Eno Sarris: Welp.

12:27
Eno Sarris: Kenny’s a good dude. Don’t give him too much crap for being bombastic. That’s the nature of media.

12:27
Asabin: If you could devote three months to researching one subject for fangraphs, what would it be?

12:27
Eno Sarris: Finish that expected swinging strike / spin tunneling thing I’ve been working on forever.

12:27
Miky: Hi Eno! What’s the minimum velocity a pitcher can throw at and still succeed? Assuming he has a full repertoire of pitches and commands everything. 85? 80 even? Thanks!

12:27
Eno Sarris: 87 I think. I know Weaver did it last year with less, but I doubt that’s a sustainable thing.

12:27
Big Joe Mufferaw: Who do you think has the best chance of being a Star/Super Star. Gary Sanchez, Clint Frazier, Gleyber Torres, or Jorge Mateo?

12:28
Eno Sarris: Sanchez.

12:28
Guest: Does Sean Manaea have a straight fastball?

12:28
Eno Sarris: Not at all. It’s super low spin, has a ton of sink, and a ton of fade.

12:29
Marty: Will David Dahl get regular playing time with Desmond acquisition and do you like him as a keeper this year?

12:29
Eno Sarris: I might actually wait on that Dahl deal from earlier until we hear what happens with Desmond and trades, but I think this shakes down with Dahl playing.

12:29
Tim: What is your take on Kopech? Saw him in AFL and the strikes were vicious, but the balls were many.

12:29
Eno Sarris: But the delivery wasn’t terrible and every third changeup was good, and the breaking ball was good. I’m in.

12:30
Cory S.: Hello funk master.

12:30
Eno Sarris:

12:31
klof: Do you expect Panda to be the Red Sox’s everyday option at 3B? Or is there another shoe about to drop? Turner maybe? Hanley back across the diamond and some three way flexibility with those two and Moreland at DH/1B?

12:31
Eno Sarris: They have Holt there too, I suspect he’ll be playing there more often than in the outfield.

12:32
Ryno: And now for something completely different, what can we expect from Cesar Hernandez next year? Does trading him to a specific team increase his value?

12:32
Eno Sarris: He actually hits the ball fairly hard and in the line drive angles, but I bet the defensive numbers have him overvalued. He’s more of a major league regular.

12:32
Mets: Who are the Mets going to sign / trade for … Give me some hope

12:33
Eno Sarris: I’m hoping they can get a reliever for Bruce, not even a great one, but maybe just relief that helps them sign Ziegler. Lagares and then a signing in CF. Fowler would make too much sense.

12:33
Art Vandelay: Let’s play TMZ, what do you think Bryce Harper’s “Wow…” tweet was about?

12:33
Eno Sarris: I think if you don’t face your own guys like Gio and Lopez, it’s easy to overvalue a guy with good velocity.

12:34
Andrew: The Mets farm system seems pretty “meh” now. How much is that due to successful graduation to MLB v. disappointing drafting/signing v. disappointing development?

12:34
Eno Sarris: Rosario is super legit to me, and they’ve done a good job graduating useful pitchers.

12:34
Eno Sarris: They haven’t been as active in some markets as they should have been.

12:34
raj: is statcast data about routes and route efficiency publicly available?

12:34
Eno Sarris: I haven’t seen it.

12:34
CamdenWarehouse: Who the next one gone from the White Sox?

12:35
Eno Sarris: If me, Nate Jones in a package with someone.

12:35
BarryBaker: What osrt of return does Quintana get for the CWS?

12:35
Eno Sarris: A great one, but there’s still the issue of not really knowing how to age command because we can’t even really put a number on command.

12:36
William: Does Eric Hosmer have another level or he just kinda meh at 1B?

12:36
Eno Sarris: Kinda at the mercy of his BABIP. Good, and maybe better than his WAR, but not great.

12:37
JKD: As a Nats fan I was very excited for Giolito, but after seeing him this year… man, that fastball. Doesn’t move, and can’t place it. If you have a pitcher with a different name who you said, “great curve, struggles with location sometimes; fastball plus velo but no movement, struggles with command”… this is not a guy you lose sleep about moving. Maybe he’ll figure it out and be great! That’s also true of dozens and dozens of other young pitchers.

12:37
Eno Sarris: +1

12:37
Pennsy: Matt Holiday has the right idea and I’ve started slipping a “Retains the right to refuse to a trade to the Oakland Athletics” clause in every contract I’ve signed recently. No I don’t play baseball but why take the risk?

12:37
ola barfsky: droppin’ tude and gainin’ lude while stayin’ nude

12:38
ola barfsky: at what age does tickling become only sexual?

12:38
Eno Sarris: two person interlude

12:38
klof: I won a bet with a leaguemate about Sale/Arrieta’s FG Pts total this season. He owes me a bomber of something from the Denver area. What should I ask for?

12:38
Eno Sarris: Ask for two small Crooked Staves, or a bomber of Funkwerks Tropic King Saison.

12:39
Tim: Does Yasiel Puig have anything left in the tank?

12:40
Eno Sarris: Yeah I don’t think last year will be his epitaph. He’s made adjustments before and still has the tools and isn’t too old.

12:40
Lucas: Have we reached the point where trading for talent is more expensive than signing FA’s? Or an equilibrium point at least?

12:40
Eno Sarris: Dunno, the FA list so bad tho

12:40
Twoseaming: Don’t forget about CJ Edwards

12:40
Eno Sarris: never forget

12:40
klof: If Gallo doesn’t put it together this year, are you out?

12:40
Eno Sarris: Been out for years.

12:40
CamdenWarehouse: Minty didn’t even say thank you for helping him win. He just demands more from you.

12:41
Eno Sarris: That’s the business, and not in the good way.

12:41
Art Vandelay: Odds Dozier to LA actually happens?

12:41
Eno Sarris: Minnesota could use some pitching, but a little afeared of who plays second after he leaves. Polanco pretty shaky.

12:41
TJ: What are you expecting from Conforto in 2017?

12:42
Eno Sarris: .275/.350/.475 in 500 PA? I like him. Might be high man.

12:42
forever it: Do you think Domingo Santana puts it together this year?

12:43
Eno Sarris: Statcast loves him, and health could really do it. A little worried that the outfield is getting crowded there, and don’t know how many chances he’ll have going forward, but I’m in for this year.

12:43
klof: How should I feel about the Cubs jacking up ticket prices 19%? Should teams strive to make at least a portion of their tickets affordable to the average fan? Or is it a rich fan’s sport for the in-person experience?

12:44
Eno Sarris: It sucks but it’s still cheaper than the other two big three sports. At least the TV experience is improving.

12:44
ola barfsky: it’s a trick of nature that you can both bald and grow ear and hose hair at an insane rate

12:44
Honestly Though: We’re glad you’re so honest on Sleeper and the bust

12:45
Michael: FWIW I come for the real baseball and ludes

12:45
Eno Sarris: Well you saved *that* one.

12:45
Mike: In spite of being sick, what was your best/least favorite aspect of the Winter Meetings being in the DC area?

12:47
Eno Sarris: Hmm.. Best: Rose’s Luxury was amazing. I want a Cinnamon Toast Crunch shaker for my house or I don’t because I’d just get fat. Second-best: National Harbor wasn’t as cheesy as many of the ‘convention’ areas like the one in Orlando or Dallas. Least: Not warm, not San Diego.

12:47
Sanchino: When drinking a beer, how much do you care about specific style traits like ABV? I brewed a Berliner that will probably be 6.5%, if it’s still tart and dry and effervescent, does the gravity matter to you? I’m think Yuzu from New Belgium as an example of someone completely ignoring gravity.

12:48
Eno Sarris: There’s ABV on the bottle and then there’s how it reads. Plenty of double-digit stouts aren’t that hot because they are complex and have a lot going on. If I taste a beer as hot — too much alcohol — I generally don’t like it, and I will order my beers from least to most ABV generally, but I won’t buy a beer based on ABV by itself.

12:48
Roadhog: Kendall Graveman + Ryan Dull for David Dahl makes a lot of sense to me. A #2 starter and a closer with a ton of service time, with profiles perfectly fit for Coors for an impact CF.

12:48
Eno Sarris: Not enough.

12:49
Ghost of Gred Madduxes Past: Liked the Ramos article. Are you a believer in the story that LASIK really did turn Ramos into a better hitter? Do you see his offensive projection going forward as better, worse, or the same as the roughly league-average bat predicted by Steamer?

12:50
Eno Sarris: I think it can really help. I mean, in conjunction with his zone discernment changes, that’s really impressive. I’m going with the over on a 100 wrC+.

12:50
CamdenWarehouse: Which trade for an MLB player has the most chance to backfire?

12:51
Eno Sarris: Okay, I’ll admit this as much as I like the Eaton deal: if Gio turns back into an ace, then the deal isn’t great. I’d just put the chance that one of Reynaldo or Gio is even a 1/2/3 at something like 20%.

12:51
Bob: Does Billy Hamilton plus reliever trade for Conforto make any sense ? I like it as Reds fan but not sure from Mets point of view

12:51
Eno Sarris: I like Lagares and Conforto too much to do this.

12:52
Lightning Round!: Braves sign Turner, sign Weiters, start Albines at 2b… wildcard team?

12:52
Eno Sarris: They at around 77 now I think. That would make them 83+. Would take luck to get to wild card.

12:52
Dan: Is Derek Holland worth a flyer for the Cubs?

12:52
Eno Sarris: I’m not a fan. Maybe in the pen.

12:52
Pennsy: Washington DC is the only place in this beautiful country where we name a strain of cannabis for the deceased former mayor and his surviving family is like “This is a very fitting tribute thank you.”

12:53
Simon mcpherson: Hi Eno, do you think Clint Frazier gets his chance in NYY this year? What do you think his ceiling /floor is. Also, what do you think about Justin upton going into ’17.

12:54
Eno Sarris: Upton can be a bit better than last year. Frazier has so much swing and miss, I’ve seen him swing through three straight sliders. I’m not sure he makes it, but he should get a chance this year.

12:54
StackedDeck: Brandon Webb succeeded averaging 88 on his fastball?

12:54
Eno Sarris: That was better relative to the league average back then, so it’s like a guy being 89 today, at least, and also he had the wickedest sink on that pitch.

12:54
Hopeless in seattle?: Any hope for the M’s? Would love your thoughts on the Walker trade.

12:55
Eno Sarris: Not sure Walker ever gets there, and Segura > Marte, and there’s a chance Haniger is interesting.

12:55
Jonas: Do you like basketball?

12:55
Eno Sarris: Second-favorite sport to watch, favorite sport to play!

12:56
Honestly: Chances Keuchel bounces back to at least 2014 form?

12:56
Eno Sarris: Low threes ERA on the back of a 65% GB rate? That I’ll give him as probably better than 50/50, but not 2015.

12:56
Dave: It’s too bad you didn’t have any Mad Elf while you were in DC. That would have gotten you over your cold in a hurry, and made you forget where you were too.

12:56
Nelson: Honey Mustard or Honey + Mustard?

12:56
Eno Sarris: I always do the latter.

12:57
Ham: Regarding the Stroman for Blackmon rumour that was circulating yesterday. Many Jays fans scoffed at the idea, but man, Blackmon is legit. Who would you like that swap better for?

12:58
Eno Sarris: Blackmon’s been below average by wRC+ on the road in the past, but I think there’s a Coors hangover and that park factors screw Rockies. I think the Blue Jays need Stroman more though, and wouldn’t do it. They’ve got Carrera and Pillar and can cheap on a corner bat in this market.

12:58
Choo Choo: Maybe I’m crazy, but I could see Bruce being a pretty good bat in Tex or Tor. DH him or give him a 1b mit.

12:58
Eno Sarris: Toronto hasn’t been interested enough so far for some reason.

12:58
Michael: I read Eric’s report on Moncada. I understand he has amazing tools and that’s why he’s number one. But don’t you think too much weight is being put on his physique and not enough on swing and miss? He’s not a running back trying to truck d-lineman,

12:59
Eno Sarris: Me, Carson and Eric talked about this for a long time. I still don’t know. Definitely the ceiling goes to Moncada because if he pairs skills he’s shown before with those tools he’s capable of being Trout on the infield. But there’s more risk than someone like a Benintendi.

12:59
Pip: Everyone keeps saying that the nats got robbed, but the pirates wanted Roble+Giolito+ more for Cutch!! And it seemed everyone thought Pittsburgh may not be getting enough on that deal! Is it mostly just Adam Eaton being undervalued?

1:00
Eno Sarris: I’d take Eaton and keeping Robles for sure. Cutch’s defense has really fallen off in center, it’s not just positioning.

1:00
Ken Burns : Team A gets: Lewis Brinson, Luke Weaver, Cody Allen

1:00
Eno Sarris: Team B gets a wedgie.

1:00
IsIt2017Yet?: Pirates probably actually lost ground so far this offseason, yeah?

1:00
Eno Sarris: Ain’t over yet.

1:00
Matt Damon: MATT. DAMON.

1:00
Eno Sarris:

1:01
Ken Burns : Team A: Cody Allen, Lewis Brinson, Luke Weaver; Team B: J.D. Martinez, Glasnow…who gets a better haul?

1:02
Eno Sarris: You know what I think I take A. Love Allen as a closer, Brinson is exciting. JDM is best player in deal, but that’s not dogma for me.

1:03
Yancy from Myers: Favorite sandwich you made/have eaten in the past month?

1:03
Eno Sarris: Man it really might have been one of the more simple ones: Lentils (with ginger, garlic, cumin, curry, onions) on a baguette with tri-tip and melted gruyere.

1:04
majordanby: Giants – thoughts on what they do with their outfield this offseason?

1:04
Eno Sarris: I thought they had ten million left but apparently their owner said they are over the lux tax and need to be salary neutral from here on out, so I guess they go with Mac and Jarret, who we should call Jack because he jacks dongers and that rhymes with Mac.

1:06
Drew: Why do the Marlins want Jansen other than the fact that he’s good? I was always under the impression that you build the bullpen last, and only after getting the everyday guys and SPs figured out. They don’t seem to be there yet.

1:06
Eno Sarris: I don’t get it!

1:06
Eno Sarris: They either think they are closer than I think they are, or they want to trade Ramos for a lot, or they just saw what happened in the postseason and are blindly copying.

1:06
Raindog: What do you think of a suggested Brach – Granderson swap? Apparently the O’s wanted the Mets to pay down some of Granderson’s $15M in such a trade

1:07
Eno Sarris: I’d do it. They got a lot from Ganderson, but he’s not a spring chicken, and he’s on a one year deal, and Brach is good.

1:07
Matt: How much is Holland going to get?

1:07
Eno Sarris: Something like Hill? 1/6? With an option for more?

1:07
DTH: Will Sam Travis (the Luigi to Schwarber’s Mario at IU) be an average MLB regular? also, had Fieldwork in Berkeley yesterday on your recommendation, that mexican hot chocolate beer was ++

1:07
Eno Sarris: I don’t think so and awesome!

1:08
Matt: Is Manaea the kinda guy that I risk paying $7 next year, or the kinda guy that I throw back into auction and hope to pay $4?

1:08
Eno Sarris: In a twelve team throw back and try to get cheaper.

1:08
Matt: First Holliday has the Anti-Oakland clause. The Chapman gets the anti-Cali clause. A few years ago, secession movements started focused around the state of Jefferson. Things ain’t lookin’ too good for the land of fruits and nuts, eh?

1:09
Eno Sarris: It’s just taxes and Cuba in Chapman’s case is my guess. Holliday, well that’s burnt nuts.

1:09
Guy: @klof get the barrel aged Tropic King, if he can find any…

1:09
Snarfle: What’s my “I’m in SF and away from the baby for the evening while I talk about tech and democracy” beer tonight?

1:09
Eno Sarris: Cellarmaker Dobis. and then sneak around to City Beer Store and see what’s going down.

1:09
Art Vandelay: Puig’s 26 years old….yeah I would say he has some left in the tank lol

1:09
Eno Sarris: people talk about him like he’s jeff freaking francouer.

1:10
Tom Murphy: I’M A REAL PERSON! And I can keep six in my mixed roto league, $260 budget. Which six from Votto ($25), Archer ($17), Arrieta ($22), Schwarber ($11) and Rich Hill, Bregman, Benintendi, Swanson, Mazara, and Aaron Sanchez (all $6). I’m tempted to go with all $6 players. Too risky?

1:10
Eno Sarris: no your’e not. I’ll take the six dollar group, but would really consider Votto or Schwarber over Sanchez.

1:11
JV: What do you expect from Matt Moore in a full year in Frisco?

1:11
Eno Sarris: I like the cutter. I’ll take a 3.50/1.2 8k9 sub 1 HR/9

1:11
Chill: Saw that Kopech didn’t want to be comp’d to Syndergaard because he didn’t want to “set any limitations” on himself or something. Is that just a young guy’s overconfidence or do you think he’s kind of a b-hole?

1:12
Eno Sarris: This dude walks that line between competitive and something worse for sure. Broke his hand, amphetamines… but also competes on every damn pitch.

1:12
Nelson: Archie Bradley was Giolito before Giolito

1:12
Snarfle: Remember when I had that dream that I was Curtis Granderson and I scored the winning run in a game played in Central Park? Not in one of the baseball fields, just in the park with the bases not really arranged in a diamond. Anyway, it was cool.

1:12
Snarfle: Should flights of stairs be replaced by a column of goop that you can swim through but somehow doesn’t stick to your clothes?

1:12
ryan: does pitchFX track where the catcher’s mitt sets up?

1:13
Eno Sarris: CatcherFx, or Sports Vision does, but it’s propietary.

1:14
Yours Truly: Why were all the stories about the Orioles during WM so weird? We didn’t really accomplish much of anything… other than the two Rule 5 guys… Other than “laying groundwork” did Duquette actually do anything substantial?

1:14
Eno Sarris: They always get the next 45 HR guy late.

1:14
Sonny: All I want for my birthday is a big booty eno

1:15
Snarfle: Choose one: ability to dunk or a 100% perfect MJ moonwalk.

1:15
Eno Sarris: Dunk!

1:15
cj: I drink Jai Alai every weekend. Is the white oak Jai Alai worth me switching to while its available

1:15
Eno Sarris: Worth trying. You might hate. It’s got a strange taste. The people that love it, love it hard though.

1:15
Sonny: My son is 4 months, at what age to I have to clean up my language in front of him? is it too late and I’m a monster? FU#&!

1:16
Eno Sarris: Mine’s four and I’m trying harder now. I’ll also be the one that gets in trouble at school probably.

1:16
Eno Sarris: Kinda tough to talk to players at night and then wake up with your kid and talk to your wife and not let any of that talk slide in.

1:17
Guest: Will the auction calculator be adjusted this year to account for the power spike (i.e, homeruns less valuable, steals moreso)?

1:17
Eno Sarris: It’s always looking at the entire league and putting value against the league, so yes.

1:17
Kevin: Most random baseball person that you saw at the Winter Meetings?

1:18
Eno Sarris: Jim Leyland? No, I guess not him. The Yoga Dude? Maybe him.

1:18
Carl: Josh Rutlege picked in the Rule 5 by Boston. Will he stick on the roster?

1:18
Eno Sarris: Fighting Marco Hernandez for last spot.

1:19
Ampersand: One time I found someone’s phone unlocked during a house party so I looked at their number and started texting them every fruit I could think of

1:19
ola barfsky: is there a candy that makes you angry that it even exists as a candy choice? i’ll go first: mounds.

1:19
Eno Sarris: YOU SHUT UP

1:19
Snarfle: Alright, I should probably get back to doing stuff I’m paid for, but I will leave you with the image of Thomas Jefferson, wearing an old-timey coat and basketball shorts, shaking his head at Lebron for giving him too much room, then nailing a 3.

1:20
Kevin: Are you a believer in a Ben Revere bounce-back?

1:20
Eno Sarris: no. He did something weird: he was a league leader in hitting in home run angles. Why.

1:20
Mike: Hey Eno, can you explain why I’m wrong about this:

Chart: not paying too much (in any currency) for an “elite closer” is the new moneyball, unless he’s truly elite, i… twitter.com/i/web/status/8…
8 Dec 2016
1:21
Eno Sarris: I think I’d just go high or low. I don’t like middling Melancon. I’d rather get Jansen or buy Cashner and convince him to close.

1:21
Twoseaming: Do you like baseball?

1:21
Eno Sarris: v much

1:21
Zach: Knuckleballers exempt from 87+ minimum?

1:21
Eno Sarris: yes they have to be able to throw the knuckler 80 though

1:21
DvE: It seems like AA opened his mouth too soon and now is caught mid-rebuild and w/out a CF. Any chance the Tigers take a chance on an AJax or Des Jennings or are the internal options just as good?

1:22
Eno Sarris: yeah I think the’ll do that. Probably Jackson unless Jackson wants to play for contender.

1:22
Tim: Is Matt Harvey an ace? Do you think he returns to his norm?

1:23
Eno Sarris: I wouldn’t bet on ace form after that surgery. It’s a rare one. If you bet on 2/3, you could be pleasantly surprised, I guess.

1:23
Austin Meadow’s Ass: Hey eno, please tell me the buccos are gonna make room for me

1:23
Eno Sarris: Might have to wait until deadline now.

1:24
Jj: Should the Jays blow it up?

1:24
Eno Sarris: Still have some window.

1:26
John: Would you trade Jose Bautista/Stephen Strasburg/Marcus Stroman for Mike Trout in a keeper league?

1:26
Eno Sarris: Yes.

1:26
Carl: How long was the line for Roses?

1:26
Eno Sarris: We had reservation but check this: no line at five on a rainy Tuesday night.

1:27
Miky: Do you know some Czech Republic’s beers? If yes, what’s your favorite?

1:28
Eno Sarris: I had some Budvar when I lived in London, and Urquell was a family beer for a long time. Had Staropramen in London too. I know I’m naming all the big ones, but that’s mostly what I got.

1:28
pirates hurdles: My theory is that Loria watched the playoffs and is driving it as a cure all.

1:28
Eno Sarris: Yeah seems like it.

1:29
Matt: Meant Greg – how much is Greg Holland going to get?

1:29
Eno Sarris: yeah I didn’t think Greg would get much more than 2/15 or something. I know he wasn’t all the way hot yet but he was only 91+ in a session.

1:29
Zach: Default Holland: Greg or Derek?

1:29
Eno Sarris: Greg.

1:30
Johnny5Alive: Grandy is a three win player at $15, even if he’s old that’s value. The mets shouldn’t have to play any of that down. Os were ready to give trumbo $70! He’s terrible. Has one good year which just si happened to be last year!

1:30
Eno Sarris: oh no I’m just saying trade him if you get real value because there’s a glut and I don’t want them to trade Conforto.

1:30
Hannah Hochevar: Zips comps Bregman with Beltre. Bananas! And exciting.

1:30
Carl: Puig = Brett Lawrie

1:30
ola barfsky: corduroy pants vs corduroy shorts – winner?

1:30
CamdenWarehouse: Are there fake people here?

1:31
Sean Rodriguez: Given, Chapman & Jansen are 1.5 or 1.6 war, and they are paid at a much higher rate, is this a flaw in war, or in the way teams value these two players

1:31
Eno Sarris: I have a hard time with this because I believe three things that don’t all mesh. I believe that WAR isn’t a great metric for relievers. I believe that relievers are worth more than their WAR. I believe that we are approaching overvaluing relievers.

1:31
Ryon Healy: Just how good can I potentially become? Comp?

1:31
Eno Sarris:

1:33
Eno Sarris: I think he could be a bit like Longo with a little less power?

1:33
Eno Sarris: and a little less D.

1:33
Dooduh: Do you think the Mets will ever acquire their own Brad Brach?

1:33
Eno Sarris: Yeah what the heck. I guess picking up Reed cheap was decent.

1:34
Brian: I live in Toledo Ohio. I’m starting to think this has to be one of the best places to buy beer in the country. Ohio beers are pretty good, but then when you include the readily available Michigan beers and now Three Floyd’s being available at my market regularly, Im in heaven. Do you agree and what are some other awesome areas to buy beer?

1:34
Eno Sarris: It’s not bad, but Chicago has slightly better home beer and the same access to across the country beers!

1:34
Ampersand: Eno do I want tea? Caveat: I would have to stand up and walk 15 steps to the kitchen.

1:34
Eno Sarris: Eh.

1:35
steve: Has the ship sailed on Devin Mesoraco?

1:35
Eno Sarris: No, I’ll give him another chance. I wonder if it’s sailed on him being a catcher, especially since tucker is decent.

1:35
Ronnie: What’s Jorge Soler’s triple slash line ceiling?

1:35
Eno Sarris: realistic ceiling Im giving him .260/.340/.480 with poor D.

1:36
CamdenWarehouse: So Leyland still has to come and drink his double scotch and double vodkas despite no longer managing?

1:36
Eno Sarris: Yup!

1:36
Maverik312: Whhhaaaaaaaaaaaat. Mounds and Almond Joy are my jam!

1:36
Michael: If you like mounds, I don’t know that we can be friends unless you equally like twizzlers

1:36
Eno Sarris: yah

1:36
I wonder: Are you a believer in James Paxton for 2017? Going forward?

1:36
Eno Sarris: Yes.

1:36
Alex: Could you see Mallex Smith ending up like any of Ben Revere, Juan Pierre, Billy Hamilton, or Michael Bourn?

1:37
Eno Sarris: I think a little better than Revere because he can really play center.

1:37
Asabin: How much work are MLB teams doing with bio mechanical studies with respect to injury, power transfer, etc.

1:37
Eno Sarris: Most teams I talk to are doing that.

1:37
Eno Sarris: But then… they’re talking to me so.

1:37
Moltar: Is getting Eaton and giving up all those prospects really better than getting Fowler and giving up your late first rounder?

1:37
Eno Sarris: money question, too, though.

1:38
P: That was not a simple sandwich…

1:38
Eno Sarris: Compared to my norm…

1:38
David B: Hey Eno, how can I find things like Statcast xAvg, etc.?

1:38
Eno Sarris: xAvg is done by Andrew Perpetua on RotoGraphs, he has a whole x Suite. Statcast stuff is on baseballsavant.mlb.com, you have to poke around.

1:39
Johnny5Alive: Gsellman is 23 and is showing up high on some prospect lists. He’s got to be valuable right? Sure he doesn’t have the high ceiling but he has an incredibly high floor. GMs are smart enough nowadays right?

1:39
Eno Sarris: He’s the thought I had for a Blackmon trade. No idea how much you’d have to add though.

1:39
Travis: What do you think of Mauricio Cabrera?

1:39
Eno Sarris: Low spin for his velocity, will always be a little bit less than his radar gun numbers.

1:40
Dominik: I think reducing moncada on his tools is a little overblown. Ks are a risk but still he had a 900 OPS in AACHEN

1:40
Eno Sarris: Whoa they have a team in Aachen? I mean Maastricht, sure.

1:40
Marty: My local beer store changed distributors. I bought a case (24) of Spencer Trappist for $15 yesterday. $15!!!!

1:40
Eno Sarris: Underrated beer, great for price.

1:41
Netflix and Rich Hill: Hi Eno, do you think I could trouble you for some advice? I’ve been contacted by a guy who wants me to write for a website he’s putting together hosted by Medium, because he’s seen my work on FG community (batflip articles and some Paul goldschmidt stuff). I’m 31, I have a full time job, a 2 year old, and a new home. They need 2 articles per week and they want to roll out compensation for writers when they get 20,000 unique viewers per month. I would love to write about baseball so I should probably do it, right? I’d be keeping my job and am just worried about letting someone down along the way…what do you think?

1:42
Eno Sarris: Oh do it. But 20K uniques is a ton. Just do it for exposure, even if people say not to do things free. But don’t be beholden to that sort of promise. if someone wants to pay later, move on.

1:42
Sonny: I’m going into next season with Healy, Sano & Franco. I have the chance to keep K Seagar but would have to bump Posey or Darvish. Would you bet on one of those 3 breaking out or pay steep for Seagar

1:42
Eno Sarris: Go with the three.

1:42
Hank: Gregory Polanco broke out last year, but I still think there is more there. I see a damn superstar, do you agree?

1:43
Eno Sarris: He’s on the lower end, I wish he hit the ball harder, but he has the super star skillset.

1:43
Lupe: How long before A’s fans can enjoy something besides microbrews?

1:43
Eno Sarris: New stadium in the next couple of years, I’d guess.

1:44
Tommy Lasordid: Why is everyone so quiet on Blanton? He’s a great 8th inning guy. Was it the playoff dingers?

1:44
Eno Sarris: yeah I’d do Blanton/Ziegler or Jansen/Chap. Go big or go home (with a cheaper reliever).

1:45
Jax: If I wanted a Northeast style IPA in Chicago, what’s my best bet?

1:45
Eno Sarris: One of Half Acre’s collaborations. That’s the closest I’ve gotten in Chicago.

1:45
ap: Supposedly there is a rumor about Albies/+ for Grienke and Lamb, with Atlanta eating the rest of the Grienke contract. Thoughts?

1:46
Eno Sarris: Huh. I really like Lamb. I think that’s fairly cheap way to get into ace territory. I like Albies a lot and don’t hate the deal.

1:46
Hoss: Why would the Mets want Blackmon? Are they gonna play 6 outfielders?

1:46
Eno Sarris: He can play center.

1:46
Hanna: Read a piece by Sam Miller about discrepancies between the different WAR measurements and using Robbie Ray’s crazy differences as the model. Is war something that will even out over time or are they measured so differently that they can’t?

1:47
Eno Sarris: it’s mostly crazier on pitching, and if we all agree one one ERA estimator or it’s model, then we can align pitching WAR better.

1:47
Eno Sarris: It’s all about giving the right amount of credit to the pitcher.

1:47
PABST. BLUE. RIBBON: I live in PA, $15 gets you a 6 pack of Sam Adams.

1:47
Sonny: Moncada running a 30% K rate isn’t nothing but it’s damned BONKERS he had a .400 OBP with a 30% K and .200+ ISO. That’s not just tools that’s performance

1:48
Eno Sarris: I get the point. And that’s why he’s probably the best prospect in baseball. But I’m a ninny. and I might take a really high floor like Ben.

1:48
Scott: Philly and NYC are also both great beer buying markets. Tons of distro even if the locals aren’t out of this world (Tired Hands and Other Half notwithstanding)

1:48
Eno Sarris: Oh Philly gets Russian River for some reason, it’s pretty amazing.

1:49
Lightning Round!: $17 Teheran or $6 Desclafani keeper in an NL league? Or keep both and cut $7 Inciarte or $20 Freeman

1:49
Eno Sarris: DeScla.

1:49
Dominik: Sorry Auto germanisation of my new tablet

1:49
Eno Sarris: gotta look into that.

1:49
Michael: I have a website. How do I get views and exposure up?

1:49
Eno Sarris: Social media and good content?

1:49
Oneear: Curry is not an ingredient. Curry leaf perhaps but that’s not the proper name of the leaf. Curry is the name of the sauce you were describing.

1:50
Eno Sarris: I know that curry powder is an amalgamation but I think I used it and it was decent short hand I thought.

1:50
Snarfle: If you become a cat, don’t eat the glowing green mouse. You might get special powers, but usually you die.

1:50
Spicy Boy: I drank a beer once.

1:50
Austin Meadow’s Ass: We were so close, Eno, old chap

1:51
Eno Sarris: Speaking of which, I gotta go! Thanks for hanging out!

Brian from Toledo

Is your last name Saunders?

I lived in Toledo for 17 years. Crazy
