Eno Sarris: I *loved* the Boston return. I’m down on Giolito and Lopez, though. Mediocre spin and movement. Flat velocity and hope.

Jake: If you’re the Yankees, why sign Chapman? They’re a couple years away from being very good. And,if they get there, 1) Chapman will have declined and 2) If Chapman is great, he’ll opt out after year 3. The Yankees are assuming a lot of risk for minimal reward.

Eno Sarris: I dunno, Bird and Sanchez are going to hit the ground running. They could be good as soon as this year.

Erik: So the Eaton trade seems like an overpay unless one of two things are true: 1) Teams have stopped undervaluing defense. (Heyward’s contract last year would support that.) 2) Giolito never had the value he was perceived to have by fans. Which of those (or both) do you think it is?

Eno Sarris: I’d say that it’s both but for 2) it’s more “he doesn’t have the value he was perceived to have earlier any more now that we have MLB data”

Bork: So all the excitement over the past few days has led us to the real highlight of the week, the Rule 5 Draft. What do you think about what happened today? Have a few posts lined up for us?

Lightning Round!: Will the marlins move Ramos if they sign Jansen?

Eno Sarris: Later, when they are not in the playoff hunt, I guess.

Dougie: Chances the Dodgers miss out on both Jansen and Turner?

Eno Sarris: Low.

Russell: Dusty Baker comes up to you and gives you a firm squeeze on the ass, how do the both of you react?

Eno Sarris: I tweak his nipple. I actually know him fairly well because we’ve worked on the First Base Foundation together — it’s a group that helps disadvantaged kids play travel ball.

Roadhog: What the hell are the A’s doing? I’m a diehard and I’m worried.

Eno Sarris: Waiting to get something at a discount I guess. Some of their young guys are coming to fruition, so they just need to find a good way to spend a few million.

ARAlvarado13: why is al avila being so boring?

Eno Sarris: Been trained in boring by a baseball family. Actually, that team may get better by not selling. They could win a wild card by beating up on the bottom of their division.

Erik: I see a lot of similarities between Adam Eaton and good Jason Heyward–above-average wRC+ despite only average power, some value on the basepaths, and elite RF defense. Is there significant risk that he collapses just like Heyward did? Or were Heyward’s issues unique to Heyward alone, and not indicative of some risk in that player type in general?

Eno Sarris: I think Heyward’s swing comes and goes and is more complicated.

CamdenWarehouse: This has been a more active Winter Meetings than normal, right?

Eno Sarris: It had to be. FA list was terrible, so they had to make more moves.

JP: I think that funk was a backing track to an adult film

RABBINICAL COLLEGE GUY: Would Maddon use Davis the same way he used Chapman in a postseason series if Davis is fully healthy in 2017?

Eno Sarris: I think some of that was the fact that both Rondon and Strop lost their stuff late season and Maddon didn’t trust them, so there’s a lot of moving parts to that question.

Guest: Is Soler’s bat good enough to be the Royal’s DH, or do they need to start getting rid of outfielders?

Eno Sarris: They said they’d play him at LF and RF and Dyson is a fine backup CF.

Minty: You guys helped me win back to back. Have Bryant/Rizzo/Arenado/Betts/Correa/Beni. Trade 3 yrs of my Springer for 5 of his Dahl? OBP equally cheap.

Eno Sarris: I’ll take the steals and extra years Dahl offers.

Roadhog: The A’s not doing anything with the Rule-V draft kinda pisses me off.

Eno Sarris: not doing anything at all so far!

TJ: When you were in college did you drink fine craft beers or swill like the rest of us?

Eno Sarris: I dunno! Mostly Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. But not like a huge variety of different craft beers.

Erik: What team’s passivity so far is the most frustrating? Whose passivity makes the most sense?

Eno Sarris: I actually think the A’s passivity makes sense. They don’t have money, they need the values to fall to them. But the Dodgers… maybe they are more constrained by money that it seems to me.

Drew: Correa is the most expensive player in my league. Is it frowned upon to throw him back in the dynasty auction and try to sign him for less?

Eno Sarris: That’s fantasy baseball.

CamdenWarehouse: What’s going on this morning? Rosenthal, Heyman, and Passan’s twitters have gone all but silent.

Eno Sarris: Sleeping it off. Also, I saw Sabean on my flight home yesterday afternoon, so there’s probably a few decision makers en route right now.

Kiermaier’s Piercing Blue Eyes: Chris Archer is unsurprisingly drawing interest, and the Rays’ price is predictably high. How does the organization reconcile trading its ace while ostensibly competing for a wild card spot?

Eno Sarris: They are *always* coming and going at the same time.

Hung Ho Gang: So will Kang’s latest indiscretion impact his playing time at all?

Erik: Two ways to look at the Soler/Davis trade: 1) The fact that Soler was worth only one year of a potentially injury-broken reliever means his value has completely evaporated. 2) The fact that Soler brought back a potentially elite reliever all by himself means he had far more value than we thought. Since both of those sort of make sense, that must mean it’s a very fair deal, right?

Eno Sarris: It’s a floor ceiling thing, but it’s also just one year of Davis. They could have gotten a few higher ceiling guys that wouldn’t help now, but instead their keeping a toe in the water for this year and getting a piece that will help them now and has some ceiling left.

Johnny5Alive: Look, I know the mets want to dump bruce and not eat money. just suck it up sandy you made a bad deal last year. jesus.

Eno Sarris: Yes. Just get the $13 million back.

Carl: Get to any DC Brau?

Eno Sarris: I was sick and only drank one night, so I had Perpetual IPA from Troegs, Burley Oak’s Sour Chicky, and a Lucky 7 Porter from Evolution, which were all good and local. I’ve had some DC Brau before.

GZA: Would it make sense for the Rockies to pursue Quintana? Their hitting is stacked, and they always have trouble bringing in pitching. It seems like it would be worth the prospects to give them a top notch starter to go with Gray while the hitters are there.

Eno Sarris: They are absolutely going to go after a pitcher with an outfielder now.

JKD: I’ll admit – I’m kind of surprised that even reasonably analytically well-versed folks here and among baseball writers, have been panning the Adam Eaton trade by just looking at talent and only off-handedly mentioning Eaton’s contract. The contract (on a productive player) is the whole thing! It’s the surplus value! That, plus the reality that the Nats need production *now*, that it’s not a sure thing they’ll get it from the pitchers, that they don’t have much place to put it anyways, and that you need to discount future possible (as opposed to probable) production more heavily… it’s baffling.

Eno Sarris: He’s not a six win guy, probably. But a three-to-four win guy on a $10m a year contract is great. And Gio and Lopez aren’t as good as people think.

Forresg: Why is Jarrod Dyson’s value seemingly so low? 3win player last year & 10.5 over last 4 years as a part timer. Only gonna make around $2 million next year, shouldn’t his surplus value theoretically be with more than a Wade Davis, but won’t bring anywhere near that back in return?

Eno Sarris: I think being a part timer has helped him smooth out some issues, he might be more exposed as a starter. Also, he’s over 30.

Shane: Should we be concerned about Sale’s drop in velocity this past year?

Eno Sarris: I actually talked to someone inside baseball about that. They said that Sale saw Verlander’s struggles and saw that injury risk goes up with velocity, so he purposefuly started pitching at a lower velocity so that he would be good for longer.

Maxamuz: Mitch Moreland is the Red Sox starting 1B. I’m not sure how I feel about that.

Eno Sarris: Eh, it’s not so straight forward. Hanley will play there, Moreland will sit some, there’s offseason left.

Erik: I had thought the Phillies might be players for some of the higher-reward bounceback candidates (like Carlos Gomez), given that they have so much money to spend. So far, all they’ve gotten is Joaquin Benoit. Who would be the biggest bounceback candidates left on the market? And do you see the Phillies going for them?

Eno Sarris: They’ll get the outfielder that’s left without a seat when the music ends.

Always Underdogs: was the EE to the Indians talk happening at all in person at the meetings or only alive on CLE twitter? Do Indians need a blockbuster signing to repeat as AL champs or are they good to go w perhaps Napoli back? (Sick of hearing that Bo Socks now faves)

Eno Sarris: There was some talk about it. Maybe they’ll spend, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

JBJ: Carrasco or Verlander in a pts league next year

Johnny5Alive: Also, what do the mets do? Given they are built around injured pitching and old position players… their window is closing. its already almost impossible to compete with the cubs, nats and dodgers, but the mets are a 1B, 3B, CF, C, and BP short of being good. If the only move they make is to sign cespedes, its almost a move that wasnt worth making

Eno Sarris: They should spend on something. A reliever probably. Maybe get Ziegler. Get a real damn center fielder.

Watty: I recently saw you interviewed by Brian Kenny on MLB Network. Many years ago, BK used to work at a regional cable network near where I grew up and interviewed my dad (a high school coach) quite often. By the transitive property, are you now my dad? Should I tip my cap and call you my daddy?

Eno Sarris: Welp.

Eno Sarris: Kenny’s a good dude. Don’t give him too much crap for being bombastic. That’s the nature of media.

Asabin: If you could devote three months to researching one subject for fangraphs, what would it be?

Eno Sarris: Finish that expected swinging strike / spin tunneling thing I’ve been working on forever.

Miky: Hi Eno! What’s the minimum velocity a pitcher can throw at and still succeed? Assuming he has a full repertoire of pitches and commands everything. 85? 80 even? Thanks!

Eno Sarris: 87 I think. I know Weaver did it last year with less, but I doubt that’s a sustainable thing.

Big Joe Mufferaw: Who do you think has the best chance of being a Star/Super Star. Gary Sanchez, Clint Frazier, Gleyber Torres, or Jorge Mateo?

Eno Sarris: Sanchez.

Guest: Does Sean Manaea have a straight fastball?

Eno Sarris: Not at all. It’s super low spin, has a ton of sink, and a ton of fade.

Marty: Will David Dahl get regular playing time with Desmond acquisition and do you like him as a keeper this year?

Eno Sarris: I might actually wait on that Dahl deal from earlier until we hear what happens with Desmond and trades, but I think this shakes down with Dahl playing.

Tim: What is your take on Kopech? Saw him in AFL and the strikes were vicious, but the balls were many.

Eno Sarris: But the delivery wasn’t terrible and every third changeup was good, and the breaking ball was good. I’m in.

klof: Do you expect Panda to be the Red Sox’s everyday option at 3B? Or is there another shoe about to drop? Turner maybe? Hanley back across the diamond and some three way flexibility with those two and Moreland at DH/1B?

Eno Sarris: They have Holt there too, I suspect he’ll be playing there more often than in the outfield.

Ryno: And now for something completely different, what can we expect from Cesar Hernandez next year? Does trading him to a specific team increase his value?

Eno Sarris: He actually hits the ball fairly hard and in the line drive angles, but I bet the defensive numbers have him overvalued. He’s more of a major league regular.

Mets: Who are the Mets going to sign / trade for … Give me some hope

Eno Sarris: I’m hoping they can get a reliever for Bruce, not even a great one, but maybe just relief that helps them sign Ziegler. Lagares and then a signing in CF. Fowler would make too much sense.

Art Vandelay: Let’s play TMZ, what do you think Bryce Harper’s “Wow…” tweet was about?

Eno Sarris: I think if you don’t face your own guys like Gio and Lopez, it’s easy to overvalue a guy with good velocity.

Andrew: The Mets farm system seems pretty “meh” now. How much is that due to successful graduation to MLB v. disappointing drafting/signing v. disappointing development?

Eno Sarris: Rosario is super legit to me, and they’ve done a good job graduating useful pitchers.

Eno Sarris: They haven’t been as active in some markets as they should have been.

raj: is statcast data about routes and route efficiency publicly available?

Eno Sarris: I haven’t seen it.

CamdenWarehouse: Who the next one gone from the White Sox?

Eno Sarris: If me, Nate Jones in a package with someone.

BarryBaker: What osrt of return does Quintana get for the CWS?

Eno Sarris: A great one, but there’s still the issue of not really knowing how to age command because we can’t even really put a number on command.

William: Does Eric Hosmer have another level or he just kinda meh at 1B?

Eno Sarris: Kinda at the mercy of his BABIP. Good, and maybe better than his WAR, but not great.

JKD: As a Nats fan I was very excited for Giolito, but after seeing him this year… man, that fastball. Doesn’t move, and can’t place it. If you have a pitcher with a different name who you said, “great curve, struggles with location sometimes; fastball plus velo but no movement, struggles with command”… this is not a guy you lose sleep about moving. Maybe he’ll figure it out and be great! That’s also true of dozens and dozens of other young pitchers.

Pennsy: Matt Holiday has the right idea and I’ve started slipping a “Retains the right to refuse to a trade to the Oakland Athletics” clause in every contract I’ve signed recently. No I don’t play baseball but why take the risk?

TJ: What are you expecting from Conforto in 2017?

Eno Sarris: .275/.350/.475 in 500 PA? I like him. Might be high man.

forever it: Do you think Domingo Santana puts it together this year?

Eno Sarris: Statcast loves him, and health could really do it. A little worried that the outfield is getting crowded there, and don’t know how many chances he’ll have going forward, but I’m in for this year.

klof: How should I feel about the Cubs jacking up ticket prices 19%? Should teams strive to make at least a portion of their tickets affordable to the average fan? Or is it a rich fan’s sport for the in-person experience?

Eno Sarris: It sucks but it’s still cheaper than the other two big three sports. At least the TV experience is improving.

Eno Sarris: Well you saved *that* one.

Mike: In spite of being sick, what was your best/least favorite aspect of the Winter Meetings being in the DC area?

Eno Sarris: Hmm.. Best: Rose’s Luxury was amazing. I want a Cinnamon Toast Crunch shaker for my house or I don’t because I’d just get fat. Second-best: National Harbor wasn’t as cheesy as many of the ‘convention’ areas like the one in Orlando or Dallas. Least: Not warm, not San Diego.

Sanchino: When drinking a beer, how much do you care about specific style traits like ABV? I brewed a Berliner that will probably be 6.5%, if it’s still tart and dry and effervescent, does the gravity matter to you? I’m think Yuzu from New Belgium as an example of someone completely ignoring gravity.

Eno Sarris: There’s ABV on the bottle and then there’s how it reads. Plenty of double-digit stouts aren’t that hot because they are complex and have a lot going on. If I taste a beer as hot — too much alcohol — I generally don’t like it, and I will order my beers from least to most ABV generally, but I won’t buy a beer based on ABV by itself.

Roadhog: Kendall Graveman + Ryan Dull for David Dahl makes a lot of sense to me. A #2 starter and a closer with a ton of service time, with profiles perfectly fit for Coors for an impact CF.

Eno Sarris: Not enough.

Ghost of Gred Madduxes Past: Liked the Ramos article. Are you a believer in the story that LASIK really did turn Ramos into a better hitter? Do you see his offensive projection going forward as better, worse, or the same as the roughly league-average bat predicted by Steamer?

Eno Sarris: I think it can really help. I mean, in conjunction with his zone discernment changes, that’s really impressive. I’m going with the over on a 100 wrC+.

CamdenWarehouse: Which trade for an MLB player has the most chance to backfire?

Eno Sarris: Okay, I’ll admit this as much as I like the Eaton deal: if Gio turns back into an ace, then the deal isn’t great. I’d just put the chance that one of Reynaldo or Gio is even a 1/2/3 at something like 20%.

Bob: Does Billy Hamilton plus reliever trade for Conforto make any sense ? I like it as Reds fan but not sure from Mets point of view

Eno Sarris: I like Lagares and Conforto too much to do this.

Lightning Round!: Braves sign Turner, sign Weiters, start Albines at 2b… wildcard team?

Eno Sarris: They at around 77 now I think. That would make them 83+. Would take luck to get to wild card.

Dan: Is Derek Holland worth a flyer for the Cubs?

Eno Sarris: I’m not a fan. Maybe in the pen.

Simon mcpherson: Hi Eno, do you think Clint Frazier gets his chance in NYY this year? What do you think his ceiling /floor is. Also, what do you think about Justin upton going into ’17.

Eno Sarris: Upton can be a bit better than last year. Frazier has so much swing and miss, I’ve seen him swing through three straight sliders. I’m not sure he makes it, but he should get a chance this year.

StackedDeck: Brandon Webb succeeded averaging 88 on his fastball?

Eno Sarris: That was better relative to the league average back then, so it’s like a guy being 89 today, at least, and also he had the wickedest sink on that pitch.

Hopeless in seattle?: Any hope for the M’s? Would love your thoughts on the Walker trade.

Eno Sarris: Not sure Walker ever gets there, and Segura > Marte, and there’s a chance Haniger is interesting.

Jonas: Do you like basketball?

Honestly: Chances Keuchel bounces back to at least 2014 form?

Eno Sarris: Low threes ERA on the back of a 65% GB rate? That I’ll give him as probably better than 50/50, but not 2015.

Dave: It’s too bad you didn’t have any Mad Elf while you were in DC. That would have gotten you over your cold in a hurry, and made you forget where you were too.

Nelson: Honey Mustard or Honey + Mustard?

Eno Sarris: I always do the latter.

Ham: Regarding the Stroman for Blackmon rumour that was circulating yesterday. Many Jays fans scoffed at the idea, but man, Blackmon is legit. Who would you like that swap better for?

Eno Sarris: Blackmon’s been below average by wRC+ on the road in the past, but I think there’s a Coors hangover and that park factors screw Rockies. I think the Blue Jays need Stroman more though, and wouldn’t do it. They’ve got Carrera and Pillar and can cheap on a corner bat in this market.

Choo Choo: Maybe I’m crazy, but I could see Bruce being a pretty good bat in Tex or Tor. DH him or give him a 1b mit.

Eno Sarris: Toronto hasn’t been interested enough so far for some reason.

Michael: I read Eric’s report on Moncada. I understand he has amazing tools and that’s why he’s number one. But don’t you think too much weight is being put on his physique and not enough on swing and miss? He’s not a running back trying to truck d-lineman,

Eno Sarris: Me, Carson and Eric talked about this for a long time. I still don’t know. Definitely the ceiling goes to Moncada because if he pairs skills he’s shown before with those tools he’s capable of being Trout on the infield. But there’s more risk than someone like a Benintendi.

Pip: Everyone keeps saying that the nats got robbed, but the pirates wanted Roble+Giolito+ more for Cutch!! And it seemed everyone thought Pittsburgh may not be getting enough on that deal! Is it mostly just Adam Eaton being undervalued?

Eno Sarris: I’d take Eaton and keeping Robles for sure. Cutch’s defense has really fallen off in center, it’s not just positioning.

Eno Sarris: I thought they had ten million left but apparently their owner said they are over the lux tax and need to be salary neutral from here on out, so I guess they go with Mac and Jarret, who we should call Jack because he jacks dongers and that rhymes with Mac.

Drew: Why do the Marlins want Jansen other than the fact that he’s good? I was always under the impression that you build the bullpen last, and only after getting the everyday guys and SPs figured out. They don’t seem to be there yet.

Eno Sarris: I don’t get it!

Eno Sarris: They either think they are closer than I think they are, or they want to trade Ramos for a lot, or they just saw what happened in the postseason and are blindly copying.

Raindog: What do you think of a suggested Brach – Granderson swap? Apparently the O’s wanted the Mets to pay down some of Granderson’s $15M in such a trade

Eno Sarris: I’d do it. They got a lot from Ganderson, but he’s not a spring chicken, and he’s on a one year deal, and Brach is good.

Matt: How much is Holland going to get?

Eno Sarris: Something like Hill? 1/6? With an option for more?

DTH: Will Sam Travis (the Luigi to Schwarber’s Mario at IU) be an average MLB regular? also, had Fieldwork in Berkeley yesterday on your recommendation, that mexican hot chocolate beer was ++

Eno Sarris: I don’t think so and awesome!

Matt: Is Manaea the kinda guy that I risk paying $7 next year, or the kinda guy that I throw back into auction and hope to pay $4?

Eno Sarris: In a twelve team throw back and try to get cheaper.

Matt: First Holliday has the Anti-Oakland clause. The Chapman gets the anti-Cali clause. A few years ago, secession movements started focused around the state of Jefferson. Things ain’t lookin’ too good for the land of fruits and nuts, eh?

Eno Sarris: no your’e not. I’ll take the six dollar group, but would really consider Votto or Schwarber over Sanchez.

JV: What do you expect from Matt Moore in a full year in Frisco?

Eno Sarris: I like the cutter. I’ll take a 3.50/1.2 8k9 sub 1 HR/9

Eno Sarris: I have a hard time with this because I believe three things that don’t all mesh. I believe that WAR isn’t a great metric for relievers. I believe that relievers are worth more than their WAR. I believe that we are approaching overvaluing relievers.

Eno Sarris: Oh do it. But 20K uniques is a ton. Just do it for exposure, even if people say not to do things free. But don’t be beholden to that sort of promise. if someone wants to pay later, move on.

Eno Sarris: it’s mostly crazier on pitching, and if we all agree one one ERA estimator or it’s model, then we can align pitching WAR better.
