Eno Sarris: Will be here shortly!
12:00 |
Eno Sarris: Lyrics of the day, might be easy for some, but very many bonus points if you get the version I’m listening to
You tell me this town ain’t got no heart. Well, well, well, you can never tell. The sunny side of the street is dark. Well, well, well, you can never tell.

12:00 |
Eno Sarris: One, of course, I made the rules up for the Fantasy Beer League.

Comment From JustinENO ENO ENO ENO ENOOOOO

12:00 |
Comment From Justin MattinglyEno, would you be interested in speaking to our Baseball Statistics/Sabermetrics Club at Syracuse University? Harry Pavlidis is speaking in March and we’re always looking for people. We would love to have you (usually we do it via Skype). Thanks!
12:01 |
Eno Sarris: Yes I would! Wait, do I have to have a whole presentation or more Q&A style?
12:01 |
Comment From Still Brawny Braun?Hi Eno…in terms of rough projections, what do you think Braun does this year in BA, HR, SB? I’ve read something along the lines that there is no conclusive evidence of a drop-off after someone is off PEDs but you would think there should be since there was a reason they took them in the first place.
12:02 |
Eno Sarris: In there I try to look at what physics says. Because physics is pretty sure that steroids does change on-field performance. And we really don’t know when people ‘stopped’ taking the drugs, even if they got caught. So even though physics says Braun’s HR total should reduce to 18-25 or so, we don’t know. He could just find a different drug.
12:02 |
Comment From CochiseWill Scott Baker be the 2014 Joe Saunders for the M’s?
12:03 |
Eno Sarris: I think so, but apparently some people hate Scott Baker. Really good control, good slider, cutter, iffy change.
12:03 |
Comment From With the 12th and 13th pick Eno takes…Hi Eno. 12 team, 5 x 5 mixed, roto league. It’s early in the pre-season ranking but amongst the people you’d normally expect to see around the 12th slot, who would you take with your first two picks?
12:04 |
Eno Sarris: I drafted last night in a 15-teamer with #11 and took Yu and hated it. I hated the options left to me at 11 — Cano went 10th — but looking back, looks like Edwin Encarnacion was the best bet. Unless you really think Harper is a first rounder.
12:04 |
Comment From FishListen to the Arb podcast on the way in this morning. Have both Sleeper and the Busts lined up for later today. Chatting. Today is Sarrisday.
12:05 |
Comment From 2nd base and SS leapersAny 2Bs or SS that are generally considered to be outside the top 5 that you could see making a big leap up this year? Even possibly into the top 5?
12:06 |
Eno Sarris: Into the top five? I’ve been taking some Brad Miller, it wouldn’t take much for him to zoom up the lists. Suppose Profar has that kind of upside. Much later, Brian Dozier only needs to iron out his popup issue to zoom up.
12:06 |
Comment From Tribe GuyDanny Salazar. The next big little guy or future closer?
12:07 |
Eno Sarris: His slider is better than that. Just needs to be less predictable. I think he’ll still have some homeritis, so he’ll pitch to a 3.4 type xFIP, but a 3.75 type ERA. And tons of Ks.
12:07 |
Comment From CochiseParabola is the bomb
12:07 |
Comment From JesusNoHitCurveballEnooooooooooo, Saison Dupont, pretty good call for someone living in Boston – got any other Saisons or Belgian Tripels back east?
12:07 |
Eno Sarris: Just had the Saison Renaud from Mysitc, it’s made with Pilsner malt, and I really liked it.
12:07 |
Comment From Dave Cameron Diazwhat do you put in your hair to make the curls pop
12:08 |
Eno Sarris: Deva Curl. Not even kidding man. If I did nothing, it’d be a fro.
12:08 |
Comment From BradDo you think Segura’s slump last year was attributable to long season of winter ball and grind of mlb season. Can you see him being top 3 ss this year? TIA
12:09 |
Eno Sarris: Yeah I think he’s a top-three guy. Even if he only hits six homers, he’ll hit .275+ on speed and contact alone, and steal 35+ bases, right? Who’s got it better than that, once you factor in health?
12:09 |
Comment From Nerd StalkingAre there any plans for a FanGraphs meetup in AZ in March? Spring training right around the corner.
12:10 |
Eno Sarris: Maybe I’ll see if Appelman minds if I tell everyone when we go to Papago. (Hint: probably Friday March 14th.)
12:10 |
Comment From Kenley Rae JensenWe know that picking pitchers early is silly. What about using your valuable limited keeper spots on pitchers?
12:11 |
Eno Sarris: You know, I think good young pitchers are actually more year-to-year projectable and more of a commodity than it seems. As long as they are young, and you’re keeping at least five or six, then I’m into keeping one arm.
12:11 |
Comment From Dave Cameron DiazBest T-ball hitter in the majors
12:11 |
Eno Sarris: Somebody with a terrible K%.. Chris Carter? He’d CRUSH t-ball.
12:12 |
Comment From RalphWhat round value would you say Choo has in OBP league this year?
12:12 |
Eno Sarris: Maybe second or third. I’d say second for sure but what will happen with the stolen bases.
12:12 |
Comment From Shane SpencerWould you rather keep Starling Marte or Austin Jackson?
12:12 |
Eno Sarris: Marte. Don’t believe A-Jax will suddenly start stealing a ton of bases, and he Ks too much.
12:13 |
Comment From JEBIs Kimbrel worth keeping in a 4 man keeper league? I know hes specialized, but he is the best at what he does.
12:13 |
Eno Sarris: My first run at Steamer values has him and Chapman worth more than $20 and a little more than Zack Greinke…
12:13 |
Comment From EricIn ottoneu, what happens to a team if they don’t make cuts by the keeper deadline and they have exceeded their budget and/or roster limit?
12:14 |
Eno Sarris: Can’t draft — have no money. Have to cut players to get any stats.
12:14 |
Comment From MarkBetter hitter for average, Mookie Betts or Rougned Odor?
12:14 |
Eno Sarris: Mookie Betts by far. By a mile. His strikeout rate is about half that of Odor’s.
12:15 |
Eno Sarris: Eric: they can’t draft because they don’t have money. They don’t score any stats until they make the cuts.
12:15 |
Comment From Nerd StalkingOwn an $8 Lord Farquahar in OttoPoints league. Seems like a bit of a risk given the ineptitude of the M’s front office and desire to overpay for a ‘proven closer.’ Is he a keep?
12:15 |
Eno Sarris: He should at least get holds and strikeouts. If you’re competitive, he’s a valuable piece for one more year.
12:15 |
Comment From fathersasquatchHow good at fantasy baseball would one have to be to win money on a site like fanduel.com?
12:16 |
Eno Sarris: There’s a fair deal of luck in trying to predict one night’s performance, so… it’s just about learning the rules and trying to game them.
12:16 |
Comment From TomI’m in Alabama, which is a horrible distribution area. I recently bought a bunch of Hopslam and Sucks (both amazing). However, every other beer taste sub par now, including ones I used to really enjoy. Does this last forever? Please say my palate is just short term spoiled.
12:17 |
Eno Sarris: You might be in trouble
12:17 |
Comment From Jake15 DAYS TILL PITCHERS CATCHERS REPORT THANK GOD
12:17 |
Eno Sarris: Yeah but what happens after that’s not really exciting for another couple of weeks. I’m such a debbie downer, my wife is right.
12:17 |
Eno Sarris: By the way, that sounds like a porn name.
12:17 |
Comment From dapperslacksWhy has nobody linked Burnett to the Indians yet? Cleveland needs another pitcher if they want to contend and haven’t been unwilling to spend money but rather been unwilling give out 3-4+ guaranteed years, which Burnett wouldn’t require. Seems to be a fit, no?
12:18 |
Eno Sarris: Bet you hear their name when Burnett starts negotiations with the Orioles. A good portion of the rumors we hear are straight from agent’s mouths.
12:18 |
Comment From CochiseI wanna see a BG article about Malt extract vs all grain.
12:18 |
Eno Sarris: We need a home-brewer-centric writer!
12:19 |
Comment From davidi am torn on a final keeper decision in my quasi dynasty league and would love your take. In a salary cap league that includes OPS as category would you keep Lucroy ($11), Gyrko ($12) or Werth ($13)?
12:19 |
Eno Sarris: In a one-catcher league with an MI slot, it’s Gyorko by far IMO. Two-catcher, Lucroy zooms up. I love Werth, but you have to recognize his age.
12:19 |
Comment From EvanHow highly do you value Machado in dynasty leagues? What do you think his ceiling is?
12:20 |
Eno Sarris: He’s got that popup problem. If he focuses on flyballs, he could maybe be a .275/25/10 guy at peak? If he focuses on getting on base and hits more grounders, fewer popups, maybe .300/20/10?
12:20 |
Comment From JakeWhat’s the lowest depth you sunk to in light of the offseason? The other day I tried assigning crude WAR values to my friend’s cats trying to climb his cat jungle gym thing
12:20 |
Eno Sarris: I created a fantasy beer league.
12:21 |
Comment From Kenley Rae JensenDebating switching one of our roto categories from Wins to Quality Starts? What say you?
12:21 |
Eno Sarris: Sure. But remember when making settings decisions: fantasy baseball is not real baseball.
12:21 |
Comment From Betting on a bouncebackLegacy league. 15 owners with 40 players each. 24 players start. 15 hitters and 9 pitchers. Hitting at a premium. Would you acquire BJ Upton for Nate Eovaldi and Kyle Lohse?
12:22 |
Eno Sarris: I think you could do it for Eovaldi OR Lohse. I don’t believe in Eovaldi. Some do, but I see a fastball/slider guy with nice gas but less control than Pineda, Masterson, and maybe even Bud Norris.
12:22 |
Comment From RalphSonny Gray or Alex Cobb?
12:23 |
Eno Sarris: Cobb has a more complete arsenal, actually. Compare his curve to Gray’s change and he wins big time. But Gray’s FB is better. Still, I’d rather have the guy that can get both hands out. Barely. I love em both.
12:23 |
Comment From IsaacCould you start by saying where you think Jimenez, Santana, Cruz, Arroyo, Burnett and Morales will end up and at what cost? Just get that out of the way and we can all move on with the chat.
12:25 |
Eno Sarris: Ubaldo to Jays, 4/60. Santana to Royals 4/50. Cruz to Ms for 3/30. Arroyo to … no idea. Burnett to Orioles, 2/30. Morales to Orioles, 2/30. All darts.
12:25 |
Comment From GiacominiWhat is a reasonable return for Yordano Ventura in a dynasty league? Package him and Justin Upton=? Thanks
12:25 |
Eno Sarris: Should be able to ask for the moon with Upton. Ventura has helium right now. I’m unsure that his secondary pitches are good, yet. But I have a couple shares.
12:26 |
Comment From KevHow would you rank Peralta, Walden, Putz and Martinez in a holds league?
12:26 |
Eno Sarris: healthy Putz goes first. Peralta in crowded pen, so I’ll put Walden ahead of him.
12:26 |
Comment From JohnsonWhy do some experts categorize Stanton as a super star type player and have Bruce in the category below. Bruce is only 2 years younger. Better K rate, line drive rate, swing and miss rate, contact rate. Stanton has the advantage in HR/FB. Bruce is also a better fielder.
12:26 |
Eno Sarris: I think they see the potential for more from Stanton, and those two years make a difference when they are right around peak age.
12:27 |
Comment From DONT STEAL MY IDEADoes anything exist for beer bottles the same way bottle top aerators exist for wine bottles? Perhaps some way to simulate the tap “taste”.
12:27 |
Eno Sarris: Adding air to beer would make it foamier, I don’t think that would work. If there was a way to do what you’re talking about in some other fashion, I bet it’d be popular.

Comment From JohnEno! Today I think I learned that (1) you’re a German citizen, and (2) you went to high school with Cistulli?
12:28 |
Eno Sarris: Weird day for all of us. luded.
12:28 |
Comment From JonEno! I probaly have room to keep one of Medlen, Porcello or Cashner. Cashner your guy?
12:28 |
Eno Sarris: yes! Despite health concerns. Love the return to the knuckle slider.
12:28 |
Comment From JoeKeep 2 of the following – Dom Brown ($9), Sonny Gray ($8), Danny Salazar ($8)
12:28 |
Eno Sarris: Brown and Salazar.
12:29 |
Comment From DavidProjections on Carlos Gomez? How high would you draft him in standard 5OF league?
12:29 |
Eno Sarris: I think he might hit .260 with 20 homers and 35 stolen bases, making him a third rounder?
12:29 |
Comment From JustinSay you’ve got the 8th and 13th pick in a snake H2H draft. Who would your targets be? Is taking 2 OF’s in a 4 OF league too risky/bad allocation of resources?
12:31 |
Eno Sarris: First pick: I might consider Cano there. Too early for Kipnis, probably don’t want a shortstop there… Too early for Encarnacion/Beltre? I think I’d try for Cano/Encarnacion, though it’s too bad none of them are power/speed combos. Cutch/Encarnacion might be a better mix if it’s possible. I love me some Kipnis, maybe 13 is too early tho.
12:31 |
Comment From juan pierres mustachehad Kostritzer Schwarzbier and brats for dinner last night. might just give up on dinner from now on, it’s all downhill from here
12:31 |
Comment From MartyBetter fantasy option: Beltre or Longo?
12:31 |
Eno Sarris: Beltre. Batting average.
12:32 |
Comment From KGHave my first interview with a (former) ballplayer coming up for the SABR bio project. What advice do you have?
12:32 |
Eno Sarris: Relax. Try to let them talk as much as possible. Research and have good questions.
12:32 |
Comment From GSonThere just seems to be TOO MANY middle infielders on the Indians roster now. Is Chris Antonetti cooking up an Asdrubal to the Dodgers trade for someone like Beckett or a mid season return of Billingsley and a lottery ticket (Lee?)? Think it’s a reasonable suggestion?
12:33 |
Eno Sarris: Absolutely think Asdrubal will be traded this year. Only way he isn’t is if they are competitive and they need him at third and call up Lindor.
12:33 |
Comment From SadwickMY GOD THERE’S AN ALIEN IN THE CHAT!!! QUICK, SOMEONE GIVE IT A BEER!!!

Comment From RazorWhat are you doing for a sandwich today, for old times’ sake?
12:34 |
Eno Sarris: I bought some German salami at the Biergarten, might pair it with blue cheese if I’m feeling frisky, and avocado.
12:34 |
Comment From GSonKeith Law has caused quite a stir with the Cubbies and their vocal fans with his placement of Javier Baez as the 5th best SS in his overall top ten.. Justify or lambaste this decision (ISO application would be apropos)..
12:34 |
Eno Sarris: Baez’ plate discipline (contact rate) has me worried. You saw his ZiPs. That’s perilously close to not tenable. Or superstar.
12:34 |
Comment From KevErasmo Ramirez out of a rotation spot now?
12:35 |
Eno Sarris: Not yet, but close. The velocity spike he saw in the minors is slowly eroding and we’re seeing his effectiveness go with it. Still a great change, okay slider, but fastball getting more meh and the team seems to want to go in another direction. Trade to the NL would be awesome.
12:35 |
Comment From Fishwho are you taking first in a dynasty, Springer or Polanco?
12:36 |
Eno Sarris: Taveras first overall, that’s what I did. But between those two? I just… strikeouts scare me. I’ll take Polanco, fully understanding it could make me look silly. I just think he’s the percentage play in terms of bust rates.
12:36 |
Comment From GuestBuxton for A. Gordon and J. Pederson in a dynasty league?
12:36 |
Eno Sarris: I’m getting crazy offers for Buxton right now, don’t think that qualifies. He’s not far off…
12:36 |
Comment From BenSeems like Freeman’s going in the 2nd round in mock drafts. Is he more keepable as a 5th rounder over a flier like Taveras/Bogaerts?
12:37 |
Eno Sarris: I guess, but I don’t think he can do *better* than last year. He’s just more certain.
12:37 |
Comment From DavidWhen is your xbabip model coming out?
12:37 |
Eno Sarris: It’s more Jeff Zimmerman’s, but you’ll see it soon. We’re struggling with pull%. It may not have a ton of value in the end.
12:37 |
Comment From JakeThree best acquisition, in terms of surplus value, the Yankees made this offseason? I vote Dean Anna, McCann, Johnson, in that order
12:38 |
Eno Sarris: McCann number one.
12:38 |
Comment From Guestcarlos santana as a 3b for fantasy???? what the what????
12:38 |
Eno Sarris: Well, in real life. In fantasy, he’ll be a catcher this year. FWIW, I think he’ll be a 1B most of the time.
12:38 |
Comment From KSSoxFanWARNING: You will get a question comparing Jay Bruce and Giancarlo Stanton for the 8th time. DO NOT ANSWER!!!
12:38 |
Comment From clueless newbieDoes Fangraphs have concensus rankings and if so when will they be out?
12:38 |
Eno Sarris: yes and a week or two. FG+ is killing me.
12:39 |
Comment From JDWhen does FG+ come out for 2014?
12:39 |
Eno Sarris: week or so, hopefully. finishing up the editing. (these actually did come right next to each other)
12:39 |
Comment From bobWill the water shortage in California impact the brewing industry in anyway?
12:39 |
Eno Sarris: The ones that were green are at an advantage — by recycling their water, they should be fine. But brewing takes a lot of water, so prices may go up.
12:40 |
Comment From JayIf Cody Asche plays like he did in his limited trial and Ryan Howard doesn’t fall apart, does Franco become trade bait?
12:40 |
Eno Sarris: They’ll figure something out. If Howard plays well enough, maybe they can swallow some money and move him. Or maybe Asche, seemingly the more athletic one in the field, can try the OF.
12:41 |
Comment From RJNot sure if this sent. What’s a good price for Kinsler in ottoneu? I have him in a 5×5 and fgpoints and as a tigers fan I want to keep but don’t think I should.
12:42 |
Eno Sarris: I can take a look at the FG+ ottoneu auction values and tell you that the inflated 5×5 value is around $40 and for points it’s $50. Based on steamer projections. MI is really tough in ottoneu.
12:42 |
Comment From SethI own Justin Upton for $50 in an Ottoneu 5×5 league. I want to cut him but am afraid I won’t be able to find the production. Third year of league so there’s plenty of inflation, and top OF FAs are Brandon Moss, Josh Hamilton, Nori Aoki. What should I do?
12:43 |
Eno Sarris: $43 in the values, which may change a bit before publishing. I doubt it goes all the way up to 50.
12:43 |
Comment From DavidWhy don’t you contribute to NotGraphs anymore?
12:43 |
Eno Sarris: I try, but BeerGraphs (and now THT) took some of my best content in that arena. And the guys over there are better than I am, honestly.
12:44 |
Comment From MartyEno, do you think these chatters know you arent an American?!
12:44 |
Eno Sarris: Eh, I’ve been here since 85. It’s just a passport.
12:44 |
Comment From juan pierres mustacheStillwater does a pretty nice variety of saisons and I *think* they make it to Boston
12:44 |
Comment From JEBAre you not answering my questions because of the Enus chants? Well you can blame Brian Kenny, I regret nothing!
12:44 |
Eno Sarris: Just trying to keep up with the questions and failing. 12:09…
12:44 |
Comment From CochiseIs Nick Franklin worth drafting in a 12 man league?
12:44 |
Eno Sarris: Not without a trade.
12:44 |
Comment From CalHi Eno! I’m in a 20 team league and looking for some multi-position eligible players for my bench. Whats the best way to go about finding them?
12:45 |
Eno Sarris: We’ll do a piece.
12:45 |
Comment From SadwickAny Saisons that I might be able to find in Knoxville Tennessee, and if I can find some would they be worth drinking? (+20 XP for question difficulty)
12:46 |
Eno Sarris: But we do have to add a toggle — these are beers *brewed* near you. AT some point we’d like to do *available* in your area.
12:46 |
Comment From KSSoxFanIn a vacccccuuuuummmmnnnnn (official spelling), Holliday or A-Gon?
12:46 |
Eno Sarris: Same guy really. Batting average, 20-25 homers or so.
12:47 |
Comment From Kenley Rae JansenWho will be playing the role of Lucas Duda for you this draft season?
12:47 |
Eno Sarris: Might be Brad Miller. Falling in love.
12:47 |
Comment From JayDo you think T Hunter can hold the closer gig? If not, who’s next in line? Webb?
12:47 |
Eno Sarris: I think they’ll make a signing. Or Norris.
12:47 |
Comment From Ringtone ComposerIn what round do you think Cain will be drafted in 12-team mixed leagues?
12:48 |
Eno Sarris: We’ll do an FG mock next week. The 15-teamer I did for RotoWorld produced a 7.86 for Matt Cain.
12:48 |
Comment From RogerAdam Jones for Troy Tulowitzki – fair trade, considering Tulo’s propensity for missing time due to injury?
12:48 |
Eno Sarris: Sure. I think I’d rather have the shortstop. Jones relies on athleticism and is nearing the danger zone.
12:48 |
Comment From ConradWho will be the next “Chris Davis”? Explode with power from relatively unknown status…
12:49 |
Eno Sarris: The next Edwin Encarnacion? What if it’s Khris Davis? or Oswaldo ARcia?
12:50 |
Comment From JaySpeaking of pitchers vs hitters — AL only league. Archer vs Looney for the same price. Who you keep?
12:50 |
Eno Sarris: Archer for sure. Loney seems very replaceable to me.
12:50 |
Comment From MontySo then the best Wiffle Ball hitter would be Ichiro?
12:50 |
Eno Sarris: Dude could hit your whirring spike split-curve for sure.
12:50 |
Comment From FrankAny chance rizzo hits lefties this year and posts a .270 average
12:51 |
Eno Sarris: I looked at his work against lefties, and his walk rate (average) stirkeout rate (average) and BABIP (.210) all tell me he’s nobody to worry about in terms of platoons. Love him.
12:51 |
Comment From EnosferatuHi Eno, What’s your #1 tip for a new ottoneu owner taking over an abandoned team? Thanks!
12:52 |
Eno Sarris: Trade, cut, whittle down. You can get them back if you have the most money anyway. Don’t bog team down with too many prospects, particularly if they cost more than $5.
12:52 |
Comment From JeffWhat would you do with Flores?
12:52 |
Eno Sarris: I just don’t think he can play the MI or OF. I think I’d play him at 3B in Las Vegas and trade him after the glorious numbers he’d produce in a full season there.
12:52 |
Comment From JakeOliver gives Texeira .247 BABIP, en route to a .236 AVG. Where do you see him? I love Tex, his rock bottom BABIP projection makes me sad 🙁
12:53 |
Eno Sarris: Gets shifted a lot. I could see a little bit better — would take the over– but not a ton better.
12:53 |
Comment From PerryBest guess for a line for Junior Lake and 500 PAs? How’s his defense project?
12:54 |
Eno Sarris: .250/18/20? scratch D in the corner? Built mostly on tools, not instincts. It’ll be ugly in a lot of ways, and the floor is really low, but he’s worth a shot in deeper leagues, maybe even mixed league benches.
12:54 |
Comment From jesseA month ago there was a post on NotGraphs about developing a card game that focused on the GM side of baseball, Ive spent alot a time thinking about various concepts. Am i just too big a geek or would this be an actual thing people would play?
12:54 |
Eno Sarris: I think there are plenty of video games that prove that there’s interest in this concept — but don’t go far enough yet.
12:55 |
Comment From juan pierres mustache (now with additional devacurl)Cigar City HAS to be in Alabama, right?
12:55 |
Eno Sarris: I couldn’t find it in Orlando.
12:55 |
Comment From jessemaybe Im just old, but the real thing that get me pumped for baseball is the first time I hear a game on the radio.
12:55 |
Comment From bobTom, you are screwed. I gave my brother-in-law, who loved Blue Moon, and Allagash White. His palate was permanently altered.
12:55 |
Comment From dudeMy joining of an Ottoneu league fell through. Will have to search the public leagues. Would you recommend taking over a team or starting a-new?
12:55 |
Eno Sarris: Try to get a league together lude

12:55 |
Comment From Slippery PopeEnostrich! How are we feeling about Jason Castro? Promising stud or strikeout monster with BABIP inflated 2013?
12:56 |
Eno Sarris: Have never heard that one. I like his line drive stroke, I think it contributes to an above-average BABIP. Who knows if tinkering with the loft as he did last year will destroy that, but he’s more interesting with the power.
12:56 |
Comment From Earl$20 Altuve in an AL only roto, keepable or look to trade?
12:57 |
Comment From MiketronI’m questioning your feelings on Anibal Sanchez after reading the Beyond the Boxscore article about how awesome his changeup is. I know your concerns are injury-related. Isn’t the changeup a more “injury-friendly” pitch?
12:57 |
Eno Sarris: yeah but the Number One predictor of injury is past DL time. He hit the DL last year for his shoulder. And he had labrum surgery a long time ago. And he’s throwing the fastball less and less often. I see warning signs.
12:58 |
Comment From GrandyManHey Eno, what’s Curtis Granderson worth in Otto points?
12:58 |
Eno Sarris: By steamer, $10 or so. Could be more though.
12:58 |
Comment From John StamosIt is now time to dance.
12:58 |
Comment From garethAre Jimenez and Santana shaking their fists right now and going “AJ!” Like some Dad from a cheesy sitcom?
12:58 |
Comment From STiVoWhat say you of wurstsalat? At a biergarten in Bamberg (awesome town!), the young German kids were pointing and lauging at the old people eating it. Looks gross, gross, gross to my American palate.
12:59 |
Eno Sarris: 1) yeah, probably gross. 2) young German kids starting drinking with red wine and coca cola so what do they know.
12:59 |
Comment From garethWho would you rather have if you were a contender – AJ, Arroyo, Santana or Jimenez?
12:59 |
Eno Sarris: Burnett first, Ubaldo second. The splitter is important. Ervin will always give up homers to lefties.
1:00 |
Comment From JakeMost mutually beneficial Price trade you can think up?
1:00 |
Eno Sarris: Cubs trade a position player prospect to Rays for him? They need pitching, Rays could use another young position player.

Comment From GuestSTOP ASKING THE STANTON/BRUCE QUESTION IN EVERY DAMN CHAT
1:00 |
Comment From JakeOh my god
1:00 |
Comment From Guestsomeone needs to ban that Stanton/bruce question!!
1:00 |
Comment From Please stopDear Stanton/Bruce guy: you’ve asked the question in every chat for a week and gotten the same answer.
1:01 |
Comment From garethIs Arroyo lying about no one being interested in him and receiving no offers?
1:02 |
Eno Sarris: No he said no “official offers.” That’s a thing he can sign. I’m sure a team has said something like “We’re interested in something that’s two or three years long, seven figures a year,” and he’s said, “Okay, we think we have more interest from another team,” and then his agent says to a writer that they have no offers, to foment an offer.
1:02 |
Comment From MattYou really think that Ubaldo gets $10M more than Garza despite having the draft pick attached?
1:03 |
Eno Sarris: Good point. Their rumored ‘demand’ numbers have been converging anyway.
1:03 |
Comment From Sloppy JoeHey Eno, thoughts on Pat Corbin this year? Keep him for $6 in NL only league or try to deal him?
1:03 |
Eno Sarris: I hated him at first, but the changeup is not terrible, it’s not like a Sonny Gray changeup or anything. And he’s in the NL and all that.
1:03 |
Comment From TomCurious about Ottoneu and I don’t see it answered anywhere. Say if I buy into a league do I have to do a draft every year? Are drafts still marathon affairs? Or if pick a dead team do I just live with that roster?
1:04 |
Eno Sarris: Only the first ottoneu draft is a marathon. The redrafts are pretty much regular-lengthed affairs.
1:04 |
Comment From DCFollowing up on Cashner… better K rate than in 2013?
1:04 |
Eno Sarris: Yes, more like his second half K rate.
1:04 |
Comment From GI Joewhat’s with the love for Rendon over Gyorko, who’d you keep?
1:05 |
Eno Sarris: I had love for Rendon over Gyorko? I like em both.
1:05 |
Comment From TomSafer keeper: Scherzer or Pujols?
1:05 |
Eno Sarris: Ooooooooooooooooh Scherzer.
1:05 |
Comment From JakeHow did Jason Grilli bump up his strike Rate so dramatically so consistently? It’s gotten better almost every year
1:05 |
Eno Sarris: Velocity bump. Mechanics related, hopefully.
1:06 |
Comment From Sloppy JoeHave you had the Evil Twin Spicy Nachos brew? I feel that should be the official beer of 2014 MLB season
1:06 |
Eno Sarris: No but man he and his brother make some funny-named beers.
1:06 |
Comment From GuestHow high would you take Addison Russell in a Dynasty League?
1:07 |
Eno Sarris: You gotta wait until you have five established hitters and a couple established pitchers, I say. Maybe after the tenth. He still has a bust rate, the mid-career veterans have made it.
1:07 |
Comment From Travis DunnoWill your xbabip model wear a bikini?

1:07 |
Comment From KevinDoes Rougned Odor smell like a trade candidate with Progar and Andrus there? Get it, “smell”? I’ll just show myself out.
1:07 |
Comment From garethEnough. I keep typing your name and my phone auto corrects it to enough.
1:07 |
Comment From HowlingWolfVentura going to be a starter for the Royals?
1:07 |
Eno Sarris: Yes, but he might be on bubble if they sign Santana.
1:08 |
Comment From garethTrevor Bauer is a sleeper this year. So is carrasco. Mark my words……….however it could be spin from the Indians due to the lack of a Jimenez replacement.
1:08 |
Eno Sarris: I wouldn’t draft em, except in deep leagues, but I’ll keep my eye on them. Heard that Bauer is open to mechanical changes now, and they have nice home park for pitchers.
1:08 |
Comment From JayWhat tech stack do you use for your analysis? SQL, Excel, R etc?
1:09 |
Eno Sarris: SQL, Excel, and then if I can get my virtual environment fixed (need something newer than Windows XP) or Tableau for PC comes out… that.
1:09 |
Comment From IsaacI can’t seem to find a good answer to why there is such a discrepancy in batted ball data between various sites. But doesn’t that make any stats that use batted ball data, like xFIP, unreliable?
1:10 |
Eno Sarris: A few big sources for stringer data, BIS and STATS, some MLBAM too I think, and they use people who watch TV/go to games, who see things differently. And then some slight differences in how BABIP is calculated.
1:10 |
Comment From John StamosSo if the Rays are in on Burnett like Gammons says, does that mean Price is much more likely to be traded before the season (presuming the market is still there)?
1:10 |
Eno Sarris: Yeah I couldn’t figure that one out, has to mean something like that.
1:11 |
Comment From GuestDoes Mike Saunders have a better seas and become an avg daily player?
1:11 |
Eno Sarris: I think he’s a platoon bat.

1:11 |
Comment From Saison BerniceFun Fact about Eno, he led his T-Ball league in walks 4 years straight.
1:12 |
Comment From DalmanIf Orioles acquire a starter does that put gausman in the minors for opening day?
1:12 |
Eno Sarris: I think I’d buy a starter and make Norris my closer if I was them. Gausman is the only pitcher on that staff that could be an ace.
1:12 |
Comment From BradI have a nephew who is 18 and wants to be a gen.mgr. He may get a intern job for a minor league team soon. I keep telling him to learn about sabermetrics but he ignores me. I think he’s intimidated by math. Any suggestions to get stubborn college boy to learn the importance of it. Thanks.
1:13 |
Eno Sarris: Fantasy baseball? Should get beat by those that understand the numbers, and it’s practice for player valuation.
1:13 |
Comment From sassoonHow sure are you that Boston wont sign Drew and ‘relegate’ Bogaerts to 3b?
1:13 |
Eno Sarris: Not sure at alll.
1:13 |
Comment From This GuyConvince me not to take Greg Holland 90th overall in a keeper draft
1:13 |
Eno Sarris: That’s a fine place to get your first closer, I guess. I might wait a couple rounds, but then you won’t get him.
1:13 |
Comment From dudeBack off Eno, Brad Miller is mine.
1:13 |
Eno Sarris: WE GONNA FIGHT?
1:14 |
Comment From LarryAWill Mclouth sniff 30 steals again now that hes the 4th OF?
1:14 |
Comment From TomFor beergraphs to show the best distributed beers in a state, you could set the leaderboards to pull from http://www.seekabrew.com/distro/compare.html and insert a state, then insert that into the breweries field
1:14 |
Eno Sarris: yeah we working on that
1:14 |
Comment From GSonDoes Jesus Aguilar see time at the corner of Ontario and Carnegie this summer and is he worth drafting VERY LATE in a keeper?
1:15 |
Eno Sarris: I’m hearing some love for him. I don’t see enough power from a 1B in his minor league line, and I think Santana will push Swisher to OF/DH more than take over 3B, but we’ll see.
1:15 |
Comment From Purdie ShuffleOther than injury, how DO young pitchers lose velocity?
1:15 |
Eno Sarris: I think it’s strong evidence that our physical peak is in the early twenties.

Comment From FishRe: What I would do with Flores: Take him out to a fancy dinner, then skip out after dessert and leave him with the check.
1:16 |
Comment From garethAre catchers all 2.50 meh guys this year? Wait and grab one late?
1:16 |
Eno Sarris: Yes for sure. I waited in a 15-team mock last night until the 18th or something and got Castro. Coulda gotten Gomes two rounds later.
1:16 |
Comment From Mike FrownMore likely to not be on the Indians roster at the end of the season: Asdrubal or Chisenhall?
1:17 |
Comment From BababooyAre you buying Steamers 3.94 ERA for Kuroda? Hes never even been close to that in his career
1:17 |
Eno Sarris: They have age and fastball velocity as inputs, things that are sure to under-rate Kuroda. Kuroda very under-rated in drafts this year.
1:17 |
Comment From gareth.250, 10 – 15 home run. No speed. 450 – 500 abs. #Meh catchers 2014.

Comment From AndrewI miss maxamuz

Comment From garethEno. You and Danny Salazar need to get a room.
1:17 |
Comment From fanduel followupif one wanted to try their luck at fanduel and wanted to incorporate some 3 crunching/sabermetrics to increase their odds, what things would you mostly look at? ex. splits, history vs. said pitcher, etc.
1:18 |
Eno Sarris: I wrote for fanduel a while back. Mostly platoon splits, but then park factors. History vs pitcher mostly useless.
1:18 |
Comment From JTWhere do you place Chad Billinsley in terms of value for ’14?
1:18 |
Eno Sarris: Took him last night as my sixth pitcher in a 15-teamer.
1:18 |
Comment From JTI just realized I’ve probably never had steak and eggs with a side of bacon in the last 3 years. 🙁 🙁 🙁
1:18 |
Comment From garethIs joe Mauer being overrated in drafts due to his 1b eligibility and ability for more at bats while still being catchers eligible? Hes really only good for one category at this point (AVERAGE).
1:19 |
Eno Sarris: yeah but so many PAs from a catcher… he’ll be a great fantasy catcher this year.
1:19 |
Comment From StevePeteDo you think the Orange County/LA beer scene is going to go the way of San Diego??
1:19 |
Eno Sarris: I have an interview with El Segundo I’ll publish soon on that topic. Could be. Dude said LA is different… more fickle. But that the scene is percolating.
1:19 |
Comment From Vil B.Should I be worried about Alex Meyer’s shoulder problems for the prospect draft in my AL only league?
1:20 |
Eno Sarris: Looked great in the AFL. I mean it’d be better if he didn’t have it, but if he falls into #2-type-upside territory, he’s great.
1:20 |
Comment From dudeAs I work through my OF ranks, I see people very down on Soriano. But every year he gives 250 or so with 25 to 30 bombs, and a few SBs. His age is of concern, but I am not sure I find 40 OFs who will outproduce him in fantasy this coming season. Am I wrong here? Thoughts appreciated.
1:21 |
Eno Sarris: Age is a big deal. But yeah, he’s under-rated. Kuroda and him in your end game probably a better plan than most.
1:21 |
Comment From TomSuper Bowl +1 = The day most fantasy baseball leagues kick into highgear. T/F?

1:23 |
Eno Sarris: daily but thank god some of my 15 are weekly

Comment From JTMORE QUESTIONS ABOUT T-BALL.
1:23 |
Comment From JTWhat about Hamilton for T-ball? Drag bunt or slapper down the line depending on the shift?
1:23 |
Eno Sarris: if no worry about power, you could stand halfway down the line and bring your left fielder into the dirt
1:23 |
Comment From TomSo should I get my first Ottoneu team? Or are the public leagues awful?
1:24 |
Eno Sarris: I think it’s really great, and if you take over a team, you don’t have to do the crazy mammoth draft.
1:24 |
Comment From TomScherzer or Puig
1:24 |
Eno Sarris: values say scherzer

1:26 |
Eno Sarris: big on him this year
1:27 |
Comment From RockyStarlin Castro worth keeping for $5 ($260 cap) in OBP league? Seems like a lot of the value you’d hope to get from him is avg-dependent
1:27 |
Eno Sarris: that’s so cheap. could be part of a Castro/Miller solution at that price.
1:27 |
Comment From RyanHome brewing is awesome, the nerd types get to play with math and chemistry, the hipsters get to be beer snobs, the jock types get beer. Everybody wins!

1:27 |
Comment From ECBryce Harper burns it down this year?
1:28 |
Eno Sarris: People paying first-round prices like it’s a lock. I’d buy in the second maybe.
1:28 |
Comment From garethFernandez Salazar gray Cole Teheran wacha miller. Would a rotation like this full of young guys win a fantasy championship?
1:28 |
Eno Sarris: Yes. I did really well last year drafting like that.
1:28 |
Comment From pogotheostrichAaron Hill or Anthony Rendon in my NL keeper?

Comment From BababooyJust had a beer aged in a Pinot Noir Barrel. I have to say it was much more peasant than Bourban barrel aging
1:29 |
Comment From SadwickMy phone corrected your name to Eon saris. From baseball writer to extremely old womens clothing. Spell check, thou art my arch-nemesis!!!
1:29 |
Comment From Hogwagoncan you explain the reason for seasonals? i just don’t see how it makes business sense to sell something like Hopslam so seldom. Sure you could charge more in that time but even charging less it’s going to sell all year long (and let’s not even acknowledge Darklord selling for only one F’ing day a year…). Do they really think the mystique/intangible bonus to their reputation that comes with excitement over seasonals is worth losing money overly yearly sales?
1:29 |
Eno Sarris: Selling thing seldomly actually creates hype, for sure. Ask a beer marketer.
1:29 |
Comment From Dave Cameron Diazis Brad miller gonna get enough ABs? with Frankline there, i need an everyday no exceptions 2b/ss
1:29 |
Eno Sarris: Franklin’s no shortstop.
1:30 |
Comment From SteveIn a 5×5 keeper roto league, I own both Segura and Bogaerts. I was offered Kris Bryant and Kevin Gausman for Bogaerts and Eddie Butler. Take or pass?
1:30 |
Eno Sarris: I’d tray to ride the Bogaerts helium and include a worse pitcher than Butler.
1:30 |
Comment From DTSSAre there any leagues that use advanced defensive stats? Why not? Shouldn’t someone like Andrelton Simmons be a valuable player?
1:30 |
Eno Sarris: Scoresheet, to an extent. It’s just hard to ‘accrue’ defensive stats on a daily basis. Or we would have done it in FG the Game.
1:31 |
Comment From gareth2 year 10 million for Bruce Chen. Thanks Dayton moore. After the nice aoki and infante signings I was beginning to doubt you.
1:31 |
Comment From GuestTell me if I’m looking at this right: The Indians amassed 36.8 WAR, assuming an all replacement level team would produce ~47 wins, according to WAR, the Indians should have won 83 or 84 games. Does this lead us to conclude the Indians over performed by about 9 wins and that is where the true talent level variance comes in?
1:31 |
Eno Sarris: yeah read Cameron’s excellent response to my stupid piece about the Marlins and the pump-and-dump cycle they run.
1:32 |
Comment From garethWho loses catcher eligibility this year?
1:32 |
Eno Sarris: Mauer. I don’t think Gattis will. Napoli. I bet Buster sees some third at some poitn this year.
1:32 |
Comment From Guestdo you believe in Khris Davis or Corey Dickerson?
1:33 |
Eno Sarris: Yes. More in Khrush. Dickerson is good, but Blackmon’s there too.
1:33 |
Comment From JALCan you give me a strategy or two for late late rounds in 12-tema redraft?
1:34 |
Eno Sarris: High-upside guys with variable roles. I don’t usually take prospects that will sit on my bench and take up a spot. I want to take someone like Rex Brothers, who could be a closer. Alex Wood. Guys that will have a lot of value if they start camp in a starting role, but who could be dumpable in spring if it’s not looking good.
1:34 |
Comment From johnerlin on the outside looking in in san diego? and whats up with luebke?
1:34 |
Eno Sarris: Man I hear Luebke in pen to start the year, and that sucks. I think the Padres are going to start the year with the veterans in the rotation, and if year falls apart, there go the veterans.
1:34 |
Comment From LewieWhat do you think Profar does this year? Worth keeping in the 16th round over, say, Prince in the 2nd?
1:35 |
Eno Sarris: Yeah, even if he only .250/15/10s, he’s got more surplus value in the 16th.
1:35 |
Comment From ToddPrices being equal, would you rather keep Rendon or Villar? Both would be bench guys.
1:35 |
Eno Sarris: Rendon for me. I like his peripherals, think the power is coming. Villar ahead of Correa and could hit .230 with a 30% K rate.
1:36 |
Comment From JustinHow many strikeouts would Mark Reynolds rack up in 600 T-ball PAs? At least 50, right?

1:37 |
Comment From YOLO Swag MasterI asked you last week about which player has the most swag. How about the GM with the most swag? Szymborski went with Cashman. Which makes sense since Cash is in his name.
1:37 |
Eno Sarris: Yeah but Sandy has the most quips.
1:37 |
Comment From BradEno: You definitely have the weirdest followers

1:37 |
Comment From Slippery PopeWhat is your favorite bird? Not the baseball teams with bird names, straight up birds.
1:38 |
Eno Sarris: I’ll tell you what, it’s not those goddam blue birds. So loud and obnoxious.
1:38 |
Comment From garethTerry francona is awesome.
1:38 |
Comment From Slippery PopeAre you drafting George Springer in 5×5 leagues? What if it’s a shallow (10 team) league.
1:38 |
Comment From garethArron hill huh. What other players do you have an unnecessary fondness for?
1:38 |
Eno Sarris: No I have an unnecessary UNfondness for him, because of his FB% percentage and pull-all approach.
1:38 |
Comment From DarrenWho DHs for the Indians this year?
1:38 |
Eno Sarris: Santaswisher.
1:39 |
Comment From EdEno! I’m getting here late, but it’s urgent! My leaguemates are talking about switching our roto league to H2H format. They seem to think it will keep the bottom teams more involved as the year goes on. How can I convince them that roto is much more fun? What other ways are there to incentivize people to stay active? Thank you!
1:39 |
Eno Sarris: You could make a graded pay scale where bottom pays more. Or a second-half champion. Or do both h2h and roto, I know a league that does that.
1:39 |
Comment From RockyI’m finding it difficult to fully trust E5 — he someone you’d take in the first this year?
1:40 |
Eno Sarris: I didn’t think so until I started drafting. It’s him, Tulo or Beltre at the back end this year. Seems too early for Kipnis, Kinsler has slid too far. Braun there, too of course, I don’t want Votto, Fielder, Ellsbury that high.
1:40 |
Comment From Ewhat are your Super Bowl plans? Who are you rooting for/think will win?
1:41 |
Eno Sarris: People coming over. Making sous-vide strip steak tacos. My pops’ system says the Hawks, so I’ll take that.

1:42 |
Comment From RockyFielder Pujols Rizzo Hosmer – rank em
1:42 |
Eno Sarris: I have em that way but I’ll probably wait for Fielder to go and then take Pujols or Rizzo when it’s my turn to pick the next round or two.
1:42 |
Comment From johni punted ba and saves last year and only dropped out of first place the last week (the worst timing!) if you were going to punt a category in 5×5, which is the appropriate one to punt

Comment From LewieIs machado a bit overated for fantasy? Worth exploring trades in a keeper if he starts off hot again?
1:43 |
Eno Sarris: yes I think so
1:43 |
Comment From Slippery PopeI have the solution: the hometeam decides, say, 24 hours before the game, whether or not that game will have the DH rule. Eliminates the big awkwardness of leagues having different rules, more markets for sluggardly sluggers, more strategy and roster decisions…better and more fun than universal DH.
1:44 |
Eno Sarris: Won’t most teams just go with the DH?
1:44 |
Comment From Swing and a Miss PuiggySay the sox don’t resign Drew and WMB stumbles out of the block: how long until Cecchini gets a shot? (line if he does?)
1:45 |
Eno Sarris: I think he could after July. They’ll give WMB at least 150 PA to see what his K% looks like. Line? .275/.325 with 10 homers, 15 steals? More later, but it would be his debut.
1:45 |
Comment From Jake@baseballprofI Like Lucroy more than Rosario next year and going forward. Is that wrong?
1:45 |
Eno Sarris: Probably thinking a bit too much about real life ball. In fantasy, Lucroy’s steals will go away, but Rosario’s power will not.
1:45 |
Comment From SMCStanton. Bruce. Discuss.
1:45 |
Comment From Swing and a Miss PuiggyOttoneu should make a big advertising push this week: ESPN and Yahoo both took down their keeper fantasy league sites w/o warning leaving all of us that use those sites to manage our leagues in the lurch during key keeper lists season!!!

1:46 |
Comment From CochiseWill there ever be dh’s in both leagues?
1:46 |
Eno Sarris: yes, soon I think.
1:46 |
Comment From IsaacDaniel Murphy was in a group with Goldy, Hosmer, Cutch, and Trout as guys that had hit >.285, 10, 75, 75, 10 in 2013. Meaningful?
1:46 |
Eno Sarris: No, those cutoffs too random. Also, his steals should regress this year.
1:46 |
Comment From JustinI don’t understand why teams can’t just have 8-man lineups (i.e., no pitcher batting, but no DH either). Is divisibility by 3 that important to the integrity of the game?
1:47 |
Eno Sarris: THREE STRIKES THREE OUTS

Comment From JayDoes Lambo have a meaningful role with the Pirates this year?
1:49 |
Eno Sarris: No idea. I bet it’s mostly Tabata in LF until Polanco, but the platoon partner for Gaby is wide open
1:49 |
Comment From EWith an 8 man lineup, players would get more at bats. With more at bats, they accumulate more counting stats. WE CANT HAVE PLAYERS ACCUMULATE MORE STATS. THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO SHOULD HOLD RECORDS ARE THOSE THAT ALREADY HAVE THEM. STATS! HALL OF FAME! HANK AARON! JACK MORRIS! RBIS FO LIFE!

With a phone full of pictures of pitchers' fingers, strange beers, and his two toddler sons, Eno Sarris can be found at the ballpark or a brewery most days. Read him here, writing about the A's or Giants at The Athletic, or about beer at October. Follow him on Twitter @enosarris if you can handle the sandwiches and inanity.
Please don’t answer the Stanton vs. Bruce question, its been asked 4-5 times in chats this week.
It’s especially maddening considering that he can’t even fix the mix-up in his question about which of the two is younger, and that the age difference is in fact closer to three years than two (31 months).
