Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 1/5/17

1:17
Eno Sarris: I’m a dad so I’m not on top of all the trends so yeah i’m months late but whatever this guy is p good

12:00
Scott: Just so you know, you’re chat is supposedly happening in the past #Its2017Yo

12:00
Eno Sarris: I need another two months at least before this sinks in.

12:01
Bork: Hello, friend!

12:01
Eno Sarris: Hello!

12:01
Bork: What else can you use “I’m a dad” as an excuse for?

12:01
Eno Sarris: Fashion, paunch, politics, general appearance, mistakes… pretty much everything.

12:01
Lightning Round!: you a fan of Jose Peraza for this year?

12:02
Eno Sarris: Not in a real baseball way really, but for fantasy, should manage a good average and 30+ steals even in 2/3 time.

12:03
Tim: What is Jurickson Profars ceiling and his likely outcome?

12:04
Eno Sarris: It’s about his power. Without league average or better power, he’ll need to play a good defensive position and OBP over .330. Full health, does he have power? Unsure. Maybe. If he does, then he could be a .280/.340/.450 type player, maybe 15/10 type hr/sb, maybe at second base? or limp-armed CF?

12:05
Dan: Saw you said Kersh’s slider is his third best pitch in your most recent article, I’ve always been of the opinion that it’s his best. You think Curve/Fastball/Slider in that order?

12:05
Eno Sarris: Fastball/Curve/Slider. He throws like a cut riser at 93 from the left side as a starter, that’s an impressive combo of weirdness and stuff, plus elite command.

12:06
Matt: Hey Eno, I asked Dave this yesterday, but I’m also curious to hear your thoughts… Please rank the following young NL East cores (signed long term) according to which one you’d want to build an offense around: A. Turner, Eaton, Rendon; B. Swanson, (Albies,) Inciarte, Freeman; C. Herrera, (Crawford,) Franco. Thank you!

12:06
Eno Sarris: B) but C needs more time and information…

12:06
CamdenWarehouse: Is it time for baseball yet? Can’t stand the waiting for Spring Training.

12:06
Eno Sarris: inoright

12:07
Fat Kenny G: If you had to write about one slightly above replacement level player’s every at-bat this year, who would you pick?

12:08
Eno Sarris: Guys projected for less than half a win that I find interesting: Eddie Rosario, Juan Lagares, Jurickson Profar, Brett Lawrie, Brandon Moss, Byung-ho Park, Sean Rodriguez, Matt Kemp, Tommy LaStella. Off that list, it’s obviously Moss for me, but he’s maybe better than that if his playing time changes.

12:09
DLowe: Hi Eno! Which of the following relievers (if any) do you see getting the most save opportunities this coming season? Hector Neris, Jim Johnson, Brad Ziegler. Thanks Eno

12:09
Eno Sarris: Neris.

12:09
ChiSox2020: If the Pirates are in win now mode and keeping Cutch for the next two years should they be more willing to part with Meadows than Glasnow? Glasnow can certainly be more of a contributor on a contender then Meadows in a loaded outfield.

12:09
Eno Sarris: I think they’re hoping for a Cutch bounce back and either injury or poor play on another contender for a need for need swap.

12:10
Erik: What do you make of the argument that since there’s not a single reliever in history (besides maybe Mariano) who you would have traded borderline Hall of Famers like Larry Walker or Edgar Martinez for straight up, no relievers belong in the Hall of Fame? Is Hall of Fame “value” close enough to trade value that an argument like that makes sense?

12:10
Eno Sarris: I love relievers. They’re important. But if you have the top 15-20 shortstops of all time in the HoF, I think you should probably have the top 3-5 relievers in the Hall.

12:10
JV: Would you keep Brett Phillips as a top 80 prospect in an OBP league?

12:11
Eno Sarris: I love the dude. He’s hilarious. He told me he wanted to be a 1/2/8/9 hitter (whoops, he said, NL, so 7/8) and his mechanics look all kinds of messed up. I don’t think so.

12:11
Erik: Is the apparent complete collapse of the one-dimensional slugger market an accurate reflection of those players’ true value, or has the pendulum swung way too far the other way? Could we see a savvy low-budget franchise like the Rays or A’s sign a bunch of cheap one-dimensional sluggers and become a cost-effective playoff contender in a few years?

12:12
Eno Sarris: I believe the A’s were in on Edwin, and yes it certainly looks that way. Brandon Moss is a decent player.

12:12
Jean Luc: Jay Bruce for Jeanmar Gomez a fair deal?

12:12
Eno Sarris: If the Phillies pick up a decent portion of the tab, sure.

12:13
Foolsgold: Dozier for Jose Deleon sounds about right. Is Minn overplaying their hands?

12:13
Eno Sarris: I think they see LA as needing Dozier, and if they end up keeping Dozier and flipping him at the deadline, the deadline bounce might give them enough to overcome the missing 2/3 of a season that happened in between.

12:13
Bobby: Do you think Atlanta will be able to flip any of Dickey, Colon, or J.Garcia at the deadline?

12:14
Eno Sarris: Healthy Garcia or Colon, sure. Dickey to a contender wouldn’t get them much, teams don’t seem to want to rely on knucklers.

12:14
Roadhog: Trumbo to the A’s isn’t so crazy. He broke out last season, but his awful defensive metrics in RF hid that fact. Stick him back at 1B where he’s a plus defender, and he’s basically a second Khrush you just signed for 3/33 or whatever.

12:14
Eno Sarris: He wants more than that, but it’s not so crazy. I’m surprised people are missing that fact that Trumbo is actually a good 1B with the glove.

12:15
Otis Redding: You love Max Kepler, GERMANY, $9 Ottoneu FGPTS, are you keeping or cutting?

12:15
Eno Sarris: Keeping. Jawohl!

12:15
Kiermaier’s Piercing Green Eyes: How do teams scout Cuban players? International tournaments and watching ESPN for the Rays-Cuba game?

12:15
Eno Sarris: A little subterfuge, too.

12:15
Man Of Steel: Great call last year on Sam Dyson, I was able to get him late in two NFBC drafts! Who is this year’s Dyson? I was able to get Nate Jones late this year but everyone is on him now.

12:15
Eno Sarris: Blake Treinen.

12:16
Phils Question: Is multiple years of Cesar Hernandez enough to get the last year of JD Martinez? Phils could slide Kendrick to second after Cesar is traded.

12:16
Eno Sarris: I’d think the Phils would want more years in return.

12:16
Logan: I know you’ve said before that you’ve received job offers from MLB teams and that you can’t do it cause it’s just too much time from your kids and such, but in the future is it something you’ll pursue?

12:16
Eno Sarris: When the kids are in school… maybe. It’s a lot of work and travel for not a lot of pay, and I feel like I work in baseball!

12:17
baseball: baseball.

12:17
Moltar: Yeah Kiwanuka is [flame emoji] [sunglass guy emoji]

12:17
Sandy Kazmir: What are the qualities that make up a real saucy wench?

12:17
Eno Sarris: I like this interlude.

12:17
hooha: At what age do you start your kids’ baseball education? I don’t want to raise any more “He hits RBI’s so he must be good” people.

12:18
Eno Sarris: Yeah but too much can overwhelm, too. Like I taught the four year old what a curveball was because it’s easy to see. He turned to me and said I SEE IT DAD I WANT TO THROW A CURVEBALL.

12:18
Thomas: How confident would you be that Nate Jones will be closing games for the White Sox – start of season 50%, after trade deadline 75%?

12:18
Eno Sarris: That’s if he’s healthy, so you have to drop it more like 40% and 66% if you add in health.

12:19
Zihuatenejo: If the Dodgers acquire Dozier and keep Puig, they will have the __th best offense in the NL this season.

12:19
Eno Sarris: Probably still second, the Cubs are sexy time.

12:20
CarlC: Is this a big plus for Rajai? Is there any chance he puts up a .250 12/40 again?

12:20
Eno Sarris: 8-10, 30+, all the time he wants probably, since the other options in CF are worse and also right-handed.

12:20
Roadhog: Remember when the A’s traded for Khris Davis, and they had a spraychart showing his HRs would still go out in Oakland? There is an identical chart for Trumbo’s 2016 homers.

12:21
Eno Sarris: Yeah problem is that the cold robs balls of distance so those same balls wouldn’t have gone as far in Oakland. But some guys are no-doubters no matter where they hit.

12:21
Guy: Does Harrison Bader play for the Cards in 2017? Does he have legit 25 homer power? You a believer?

12:22
Eno Sarris: Doubt the first, doubt the second, but he’s a decent player, was impressive in Arizona.

12:22
Alex: Do long spindly fingers improve spin rate?

12:23
Eno Sarris: Apparently not, or at least not in the relatively small sample research Driveline did.

12:24
Nelson: Are you man enough to stand up and say the new Tribe called Quest is just not that great?

12:24
Eno Sarris: It’s… like an older version of ATCQ. Father time is a bitch.

12:24
Andrew: What do you envision from Conforto this year?

12:25
Eno Sarris: I can’t put PT on it until they sort out the OF. But I like him for .275/345/480 or so. I really like the dude.

12:26
Terrible Ted: Who has a better breakout this year? J. Gray or J. Taillon?

12:26
Eno Sarris: Gray. He has a third pitch.

12:26
Frank: I’m looking to get Goose Island Bourbon County stout… thoughts? Have you tried this beer?

12:26
Eno Sarris: It’s a tank, a mac truck, not super subtle. But very chocolatey and smooth.

12:26
LarryA: Whats worse, buying a new IPA, bringing it home and only then seeing its 10 months old, or finding out is its just some Bud fake craft sub-label?

12:26
Eno Sarris: Way way way more the first one. I still drink Elysian.

12:27
iron wolf: Eno: there is some talk that Matt Strahm won’t be in the starting rotation for KC this year. Is that true, I have him stashed on my prospect list? It it is, can you recommend a sleeper starter prospect (all of the good ones are taken). Thx!

12:27
Eno Sarris: I really like Brock Stewart. Also, Adalberto Mejia should get a shot in Minny.

12:28
Josh: What do you think of the Angels bullpen?

12:29
Eno Sarris: In maybe four out of 100 universes, it’s really good — Cam Bedrosian closes with his best stuff, Bailey is healthy and a great setup guy, and Street is healthy and useful in the middle. I like Jose Alvarez even.

12:29
Michelle: Don’t tattle on me, Eno. I’m playing hooky from work.

12:29
Eno Sarris: I think I just did by posting this.

12:30
Eno Sarris: (assuming your boss is here, which, of course they should be)

12:30
Steve: Any good baseball books you would recommend?

12:30
Eno Sarris: Baseball Hacks for people trying to get into baseball, Big Data Baseball for people trying to understand how the best orgs incorporate data and scouting.

12:30
Big Hall Burroughs: More likely to come close to repeat: Porcello or Fulmer?

12:30
Eno Sarris: Fulmer. Third pitch, the change, was really really nice last year.

12:30
Roadhog: If the A’s sign Santiago Casilla, can they introduce him as Jairo Garcia?

12:31
Eno Sarris: Let’s make it happen.

12:31
Jake: Do you see Tim Anderson as more a defensive utility player down the line or do you think he can be mediocre enough on offense to be at least a consistently league average SS?

12:31
Eno Sarris: He’ll be okay enough to be an okay shortstop.

12:31
CarrotJuice: Does “empty batting average” mean batting average without any power, or batting average without any walks?

12:31
Eno Sarris: Usually both.

12:31
Michelle: What are the odds that Dyson stays the closer in TEX?

12:32
Eno Sarris: I’d give him 75% or so. 33% lose their jobs, but his sinker makes him relatively safe because he won’t give up homers like others.

12:32
AB: Hey Eno, have you seen Nathaniel Grow’s article on Trout? Any thoughts?

12:33
Eno Sarris: Would never happen for a couple reasons, my lawyer friends say. One is that I think judges would just assume the CBA makes baseball exempt even if it’s not explicit yet, and two is that baseball could rule that he can get out of his contract but can’t sign another one until the end of the term of the first. You see Mike Trout doing this to make another x million in Japan for the next four years? Probably blackballed when he comes back, too.

12:33
Eno Sarris: ALTHOUGH MIKE TROUT IN JAPAN NUMBERS

12:36
Eno Sarris: just think on those

12:36
toimmy lasagna, sr.: at what age do i stop telling people how many months old my son is?

12:36
Eno Sarris: you’ll go to quarters and eighths by 4.

12:36
bob: Trea Turner and Charlie Blackmon are trending early on as equals. I love Turner. But value equal to Blackmons actual stats? Your opinion.

12:37
Eno Sarris: Maybe more than Blackmon. If you’re talking fantasy, Trea going to steal more than twice what Blackmon will, is my bet.

12:38
BeigeSox: How impressed are you with the White Sox’s off season?

12:38
Eno Sarris: Didn’t love the Eaton return myself, but I guess they a bunch of lotto tickets. Love loved the Sale return.

12:38
Bob: Looking to trade A.J. Ramos, Gallo and Hosmer while there is any perceived value of these players. What type of return can I expect? Donaldson.. Betts..?

12:38
Eno Sarris: Aim lower.

12:38
Erik: Why have the White Sox rumors died down? There’s no point keeping what they have left given what they’re

12:39
Eno Sarris: The other guys are less attractive or on shorter deals. They’re available, but who’s biting.

12:39
Matt: If looking for a young arm in a dynasty league, Urias or Reyes still your best options? Between the two do you have a preference?

12:39
Eno Sarris: Urias. I see better command.

12:39
Andrew Friedman: If Willie Calhoun can’t fix his defense should the Dodgers look to move him to an AL team rebuilding? Maybe to the White Sox in a package to get Quintana?

12:39
Eno Sarris: I bet they trade him. funny looking body, great hit tool.

12:39
PhanGraphs: How high are you still on Aaron Nola? The injury ending was disappointing, but he really started the year off tremendously. Thanks!

12:40
Eno Sarris: Still a huge fan. Great curve, and his change had the most drop among starters last year!

12:40
Towel: Steamer had Trumbo at 110 WRC+. Stick him at first and his previous defensive metrics has him around 2+ wins.

12:41
Eno Sarris: I saw launch angle improvements and am willing to give him a bit more than 110.

12:41
Hank: I don’t get it, Francisco Lindor is considered a top player in all of baseball. Profar is considered washed up but seems to offer a similar profile, especially from an offensive standpoint. 15-15 above average OBP. What gives?

12:41
Eno Sarris: Profar’s arm and the fact that he hasn’t played short in a while?

12:41
Sonny: why is it Ryon with an ‘O’?

12:41
Eno Sarris: Let’s ask his mom!

12:42
Ritt Momney: Odds that Eric Thames comes anywhere close to that steamer projection?

12:42
Eno Sarris: That basically looks like his MLEs. I’d say 70%

12:42
Bork: Did he throw a curveball

12:42
Eno Sarris: I said not for another eight years at least.

12:42
kevinthecomic: In your experience, what are player’s responses to being rumored to be traded only to end up staying on their current team? I’m thinking of guys like Dozier and McCutcheon this winter. Are they more “meh, that’s baseball” or “I hate this @$#^! organization for trying to trade me!”

12:43
Eno Sarris: I asked a bunch of guys about being traded http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/players-view-what-its-like-to-get-traded/ and it seemed like they were pretty practical about it. You’re usually a veteran by then, and if you don’t leave, you don’t have to move your family and buy a new house and all that crap.

12:44
Kevin: Do you think if the Braves have a dreadful 1st half that Coppy will consider moving any of Freeman, Teheran, or Ender? They seem way to optimistic to me.

12:44
Eno Sarris: Yes I think they will consider it. Some of this is to try and build a good team for the second or third year of the new park.

12:45
SDinSEA: One thing I’ve never understood is why Judge seems to be more highly thought of than Renfroe. Seems like Renfroe has been much more consistent. Is it about body projection?

12:45
Eno Sarris: I’ll take Renfroe.

12:45
ManBearPuig: What is your favorite nickname for a current major leaguer?

12:46
Eno Sarris: Your handle and Cueto’s body type made me think we should call him Manburguesa but maybe that’s impolite. My brain is failing me. Aren’t they mostly terrible?

12:46
Scott: With the unpredictability of knuckleballs, what separates the guys who throw them? Would seem like command matters less since you’re just releasing it in the direction of the catcher and crossing your fingers. I’m sure I’m missing something.

12:46
Eno Sarris: Velocity. They do way better at 78-80+.

12:47
Greg Holland: What is my over/under on saves this year?

12:48
Eno Sarris: 10? He won’t be signed to *be* the closer, but he’ll be signed to a team that is collecting possible closers?

12:49
Sonny: does Eric Byrnes still play softball?

12:49
Eno Sarris: man I wish he did because the Dutch Goose is like 10 minutes away from my house.

12:49
MG : john olerud takes oral ludes down by the seashore

12:49
toimmy lasagna, sr.: my role in the family, as husband and father, is to keep other men out. if i do dishes or take out the trash, that’s just a bonus but not part of my main job. please tell my wife.

12:49
Ritt Momney: Singlecut Brewery’s IPA’s, especially the Billy 18 Watt…. brooo. dude. yes.

12:50
Eno Sarris: weirdos.

12:50
Okra: Do you think Matt Moore finally has a break through year in 2017 in SF?

12:50
Eno Sarris: Best situation for him, and the cutter could help his walk numbers. I could see a 3.5/1.25 year with 8.5K9, 3ish bb9.

12:50
Q-Ball: Tell us more about Brock Stewart. He’s flown totally under the prospect radar, but had a great year in the high minors last year, capped off with a good ML stint, and one of the top starter pitches. He might not even make the Dodgers rotation. Yet, breakout candidate?

12:51
Eno Sarris: Well, he needs the playing time, but as we saw last year, you can never count out the seventh guy on a team. He upped his velo to averaging plus velocity, great spin on the fastball, plus slider (look at piece today), changeup has like 12 mph gap. He should be good.

12:51
Lazaruto: Is wilmer Flores good?

12:51
Eno Sarris: Against lefties.

12:51
Brett: With Cotton, do the A’s have a potential #2 or is he back-end?

12:52
Eno Sarris: I’m saying two, other people say I’m crazy.

12:52
Danny: RE: Kershaw’s elite command; it’s really weird because when you look at him, he has a very weird/unique delivery that doesn’t make it look like he SHOULD have elite command. Especially compared to guys with easy deliveries and bad command

12:52
Eno Sarris: True. Fire take: I hate his delivery.

12:52
Eno Sarris: But I bet the movement on the pitch makes it easier to command?

12:52
iron wolf: I’m looking for a corner IF and knowing how much you like Healy, I tried to make a deal for him but the other guy wants CMart as part of the deal. He has talked about adding Nola and R. Lopez to finish it. Do I pull the trigger for it in a pts. league?

12:53
Eno Sarris: Maybe if third part was better than Lopez. Nola and Healy for CMart is actually okay for me if you’re not dropping a good player to make it happen, but he was willing to add a third piece, so look for a better one.

12:53
SDinSEA: Do certain talents simply break the 20-80 scale? For example, obv B Hamilton is an 80 speed. But I’ve also seen Buxton graded at 80. Hamilton is clearly faster.

12:54
Eno Sarris: Good point. The problem is the fake precision. You wouldn’t ask them to call one guy a 76 and another a 77 but that’s how life works.

12:55
SDinSEA: Is there a weighting system used when it comes to grading pitches? I.e.: Pitch Grade (X)=(command*.4)+(movement*.4)+(velocity*.2) where walk rate, y/x axis movement and average velo are taken into account?

12:56
Eno Sarris: That’s sort of what I’m working on. Taking movement, spin, velocity, velocity of previous pitch, spin of previous pitch, location, location of previous pitch, park, umpire, batter swing tendencies into account….

12:56
Snarfle: One of my coworkers just got anesthesia for arm surgery, and somehow I started thinking about what would happen if you gave cavemen anesthesia freely, and my first thought was ‘they would stop evolving,’ which isn’t true, but they might be a different sort of beast with freely available pain relief, and that made me wonder what kind of beasts WE are evolving into. This is what I did the last thirty seconds instead of checking my work email.

12:56
Eno Sarris: I often wonder about evolution in this way.

12:56
Michelle: 39 days till pitchers and catchers report!

12:56
Eno Sarris: ROBOT MUSIC FOR ROBOT UMPS

12:57
Michelle’s Boss: GET BACK TO WORK, THESE WIDGETS WON’T MAKE THEMSELVES GRUMBLE GRUMBLE MILLENNIALS

12:57
DrunkPhil: Eno, have you had Samuel Adams Utopia?

12:57
Eno Sarris: Way too strong for me. That aint a beer.

12:57
E5: Saw the police and they rolled right paaaast me. No flexin’. Didn’t even look in Eno’s direction as he ran an intersection.

12:57
CarrotJuice: My entire family has some bug. Should I be wearing a hazmat suit?

12:57
Eno Sarris: yes.

12:58
JV: This year fantasy in 12 team roto OBP league—Miguel Cabrera and Gregory Polanco or Edwin Encarnacion and Matt Carpenter?

12:58
Eno Sarris: First two.

12:58
toimmy lasagna, sr.: kike at 2b all year for dodgers – bad?

12:58
Eno Sarris: Is he a plus defender there? Because I don’t think he’s a plus bat there.

12:59
SDinSEA: Do you think the Red Sox should try Pomeranz in a fireman role similar to Andrew Miller? The similarities are intriguing. Both were, at one point, failed starters drafted in the top 10 that have revitalized their careers. With the potential SP surplus in Boston, could they derive greater value from Pom in this role? Prior to the development of his cutter this past season when he was still a FB/Curve guy, it would seem like a pretty engaging concept

12:59
Eno Sarris: He’s been mucked around with before, too, from the four starter days in Colorado to the up and down in Oakland and San Diego. I think they’ll start with him in the rotation but consider this as a backup plan.

1:00
ohioastrosfan: I’m very knowledgeable of the game and the more advanced stats. Started my first after college job and the guys in the office are trying to convince me to play fantasy baseball with them for the first time this year. Worth it for the #networking, but is fantasy baseball worth taking the time to play? And can I wipe the floor with my less knowledgeable coworkers?

1:00
Eno Sarris: I enjoy it. I went too far with it, peaking around 15-16 leagues, but one league should be fun.

1:00
Moltar: Honestly, I can’t hate on major brewers’ craft labels. If it means I can get a half-decent IPA at a ballpark or a dive bar, inBev can take my money.

1:00
Eno Sarris: I can’t get past this. I remember when the best beer at the park or Safeway was Stella. This is better.

1:00
Quentin: Conforto, Mazara, Dahl… 1) Who do you like for this year? 2) Who do you like best going forward (best overall)?

1:01
Eno Sarris: Real baseball: Mazara, Conforto, Dahl. Fantasy: Dahl, Mazara, Conforto.

1:02
Brendan: What is Jesse Winker’s ceiling (Votto?) and his likely outcome? Any power forthcoming?

1:03
Eno Sarris: Doubt he gets anywhere close to Votto. That power outage in Triple-A was super concerning. Nick Markakis like?

1:03
Matt: Can we lock the Pirates, Mets and White Sox Gm’s away for a day. I think there is needs for a 3 way trade with Cutch/ Quintana/ prospects + Bruce here.

1:04
Eno Sarris: Who wants Bruce in this scenario?

1:04
Eno Sarris: Dan Kurtz @myKBO

1:04
Bork: Who can I bother on twitter for KBO information?

1:04
Eno Sarris: look up

1:04
SDinSEA: What’s Brandon Mauer’s trade value?

1:04
Eno Sarris: Wait till the deadline.

1:04
toimmy lasagna, sr.: do you ever feel like you want a sandwich but then after you eat it, it turns out you didn’t want the sandwich?

1:05
Eno Sarris: Sometimes I didn’t want *that* sandwich but I always want a sandwich.

1:05
M’s fan: Safeco sure stopped Cruz from hitting home runs. Trumbo would be fine in Oakland

1:05
Eno Sarris: They both bottom three in temperature, which is the biggest park factor for power.

1:05
Toki: After 5 months I’m going to stop using months and go to half years for my kids.

1:05
Eno Sarris: “he’s a half”

1:05
Zigs: Eno Wan Kenobi, I need your help. What is the future role for Mauricio Cabrera? I cant help but think he will be a dominant closer after watching him last year. Yet everything online has either JJ or Arodys taking the role back? What do you think of Mau for this year and the future?

1:06
Eno Sarris: Dunno. It’s a low-spin fastball for all that velocity, and if you look at his K%s, they haven’t been great. I’m not sure about him.

1:06
Pud Galvin: Happy New Year! In the event the Orioles realize now is the time to trade Britton and do move him, who are the next 2 in line for save opportunities in Baltimore?

1:07
Eno Sarris: Givens? Brach. I doubt it’s O’day.

1:07
E5: Where can we find things like “barrel %”?

1:07
Eno Sarris: baseballsavant.mlb.com

1:07
Zigs: Am I crazy or is Willie Calhoun Juan Uribes secret kid? Dude looks just like Uribe attempting to play 2B

1:07
Eno Sarris: In all ways except quick twitch / hands in the field, yes there is something there.

1:07
Snarfle: The number of kittens you want in a room follows a perfect bell curve. Gets better and better until WHOA THERE that’s too many kittens.

1:07
Jeff: Who has the least valuable 100mph fastball in baseball?

1:07
Eno Sarris: Mau Cabrera.

1:08
Johnny Dickshot: What does the average player you speak to know about analytics?

1:08
Eno Sarris: Exit velo, launch angle, backspin, spin rate, these things they know because they like to try to one-up each other.

1:09
Steamer Projections: When will the world realize that Yasmani Grandal is a top-tier catcher?

1:10
Eno Sarris: When he hits better than .240, sadly.

1:10
Paul: Any value in the fact that Albies destroyed Lindor when you compare MiLB numbers and factor age/level? Could the Braves have something special in Albies?

1:10
Eno Sarris: I really like Albies, but I guess the defense is a big part of this. Plus Lindor admitted to concentration issues in the minors, don’t know how that factors in.

1:11
Snarfle: That quote from Trout about how he loves thunderstorms and falling snow made me understand him more. He’s so talented he never had to stop seeing the wonder in the world

1:11
Eno Sarris: So many stars are in another world, never got cut off from the parents and had to find a job. It’s okay.

1:11
Only 38 Days : Can you admit that making a good pilsner is art? I can crap out an IPA in 2-3 weeks with all of the hops masking the imperfections. With pils, there’s nowhere to hide.

1:12
Eno Sarris: Of course. I love Firestone Walker Pivo Pils, Victory Prima Pils, and Pinkus Organic Ur-Pils, they in regular rotation in my house and I understand it’s hard to brew them.

1:12
Guest: considering a move for a job to the bay area and just casually glanced at housing options and OH GOD WHAT HAVE I GOTTEN MYSELF INTO

1:12
Eno Sarris: Yeah you’ll probably have to live in the east bay! (It’s still fun out here I promise)

1:13
Statcast Plz: When will base running and fielding data from statcast be publicly available? I’m dying to truly know who the fastest players are in the outfield, who the fastest constant home to first guy is, who has the best outfield arm, etc.

1:13
Eno Sarris: I bet this season will have some goodies in store for us.

1:13
John: Chances Puig figures it out in 2017 and performs .280avg, 20hr ish season?

1:13
Eno Sarris: Pretty good if you look past last year and consider his age.

1:14
JT: Matt Adams nickname is Big Mayo. That’s a good nickname for a fat white guy

1:14
Eno Sarris: Not bad.

1:14
Pud Galvin: Can Ritz crackers *really* be a substitute for bread when making the sandwich du jour?

1:14
Eno Sarris: I go with both.

1:14
E5: Eflin had a ERA under 4 before giving up 7, 9 and 7 in his final 3 starts. Something there or did the league figure him out?

1:14
Eno Sarris: I’m not in.

1:14
Jimmy: What player do you have the most contrarian opinion on compared to other statheads? (both positive and negative opinion, please)

1:19
Eno Sarris: Maybe Puig (still like), Aaron Nola (love), Schwarber (love), domingo Santana (like), Keuchel (don’t love as much), Taillon (where’s the change), Rodon (breaking out this year), DeSclafani (forever decent), Cotton (love love), J Guerra (good), Eickhoff (good)….

1:20
Sonny: Is there a singular skill a person could have that gives them a higher % chance to be a professional athlete (major 4 sports) than the ability to throw 100 mph?

1:20
Eno Sarris: Kick the football 70 yards?

1:20
Netflix and Rich Hill: Have you ever seen Shoemaker’s grip on his split/change? It’s gotta be a split right? Savant and fx differ…How do you define the pitch? It

1:20
Eno Sarris: Guessing split but I forgot what he told me and I didn’t get a pic.

1:21
Bort: I need dinner-date recommendations in SF. Any advice?

1:23
Eno Sarris: Slanted Door was one of my favorites before it moved to Ferry Building, but that might be fun. If you’ve got more cash, I really like Le Colonial. Less money, Rangoon Ruby is fun.

1:23
Tommy Lasordid: Thoughts on Sergio Romo going forward? I would be intrigued to see him in Dodger blue for 2017.

1:23
Eno Sarris: Still useful in the seventh.

1:23
klof: Matt Moore or E-Rod for 2017? IRL and FGPTS?

1:23
Eno Sarris: Moore. Knee injury for Ed scares me.

1:24
Otis Redding: didn’t Brock Stewart allow 7HR in 28IP?

1:24
Eno Sarris: … it appears he does. That sort of thing doesn’t scare me.

1:24
RMR: I don’t drink coffee, but love beer with coffee flavor. Family/friends seem to think this is weird. Is it?

1:24
Eno Sarris: Same.

1:24
klof: Does Bellinger show up when Puig is traded? Is that the timeline?

1:24
Eno Sarris: Yeah I think he plays in the OF first. He can move a bit.

1:25
Maverik312: Re: Cotton

Unbelievable change-up, but IIRC, that wasn’t even his most effective pitch this year. I agree with #2 (but what do I know?)

1:25
Eno Sarris: The changeup sets up the cutter in a way, I think. Three good pitches, no real deficit that I can see.

1:25
Eno Sarris: And the change should be elite.

1:25
CamdenWarehouse: What do see out of Triggs this year?

1:25
Eno Sarris: Some decent starts, great bullpen work.

1:25
Sonny: Kershaw’s delivery must be flawed or else his total perfection would collapse society. He hitches for us eno

1:25
Eno Sarris: HE HITCHES FOR ALL OF US

1:25
Lightning Round: At what age did you drink your first beer and which beer was it?

1:26
Eno Sarris: Red Stripe, 13, at a Burning Spear show. I dropped it on a rock and it exploded right as I was about to talk to a girl. Security made me clean it up.

1:26
Eno Sarris:

1:26
forever it: Do you think Chad Kuhl sticks in Pittsburgh’s rotation?

1:26
Eno Sarris: no.

1:26
GZA: What’s the Dodgers rotation going to look like? Obviously Kershaw, Hill and Maeda are penciled in, with Urias getting a crack at it. How do you see things shaking out amongst Kazmir, McCarthy, De Leon and Wood?

1:27
Eno Sarris: De Leon (and Brock?) on another team, Kaz gets first crack, McCarthy second.

1:27
eno fan: yo eno what happened to beergraphs

1:27
Eno Sarris: New site drops in a week or two.

1:27
Eno Sarris: (officially)

1:28
Sonny: Jason Groome has thrown 6 IP as a professional but I have him stashed in my 10 team dynasty. That’s insane right? I could drop him today and pick him up off waivers at any point in the next 18 months

1:28
Eno Sarris: He’s so young. If you need the spot, try to get him back later.

1:28
Tommy Lasordid: If we have robot umps, framing becomes irrelevant, right?

1:28
Eno Sarris: yes.

1:29
Stevil: Think the Reds believe they can cash-in higher at the deadline by waiting to move Cozart and Phillips until then? Is there a better explanation why Williams hasn’t moved either of them yet–that doesn’t involve alcohol?

1:29
Eno Sarris: Phillips has blocked a few trades.

1:29
E5: Look, it’s Carter Capps!

1:29
Astro fan on a mobile: Does Mike Fiers have any trade value? Should steamer have put some more respek on Chris Devenski? The FB/CH looks real.

1:30
Eno Sarris: And the slider was improving. I’m surprised he’s not a starter for them already.

1:30
Yours Truly: As an Orioles fan, I am not surprised by Duquette’s lack of movement but well-aware of the state of our budget. Do I need to start making the “Joey Rickard 4 RF” signs yet or is their still a chance DD sneaks in someone better capable at holding the position?

1:30
Eno Sarris: They’ll sign someone late. It’s what they do.

1:31
Curtis: Build a starting pitcher – you get 4 pitches – one 70, 60, 50, 40 grade…which pitches get which grade? (bonus, does this resemble a current pitcher?)

1:31
Eno Sarris: I might do Hamels when he came in. 70 change 60 fastball. Hope that I can build up his body and get the fastball to 70. With good makeup, he can make the third pitch improve or just sequence it well.

1:32
Eno Sarris: But modern pitching thought seems to be moving to 70 curve 60 fastball or the like.

1:32
2-D: Nomar Mazara aka “The Big Chill”, decent nickname

1:32
Eno Sarris: Oh yes I like that one, he’s actually v chill even when I got his country of birth wrong.

1:32
TengoPreguntas: re kid wanting to throw curve ball – you’ve taught him to be left handed, right?

1:32
Eno Sarris: Couldn’t tie a hand back.

1:32
Moltar: It’s official, Chris Berman will no longer host the HR Derby! No more back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back

1:33
Eno Sarris: That might be huge. I sat in the stands in San Diego and actually really enjoyed it.

1:33
Mike : With what frequency will you be posting articles at your new site?

1:33
Eno Sarris: Maybe less than I thought. 2-3 times a month?

1:34
Eno Sarris: Still should get 20+ quality pieces in all a month.

1:34
Craig in CHI: Thoughts on Manaea? I think he could be a #3, on a championship fb rotation. Thanks

1:34
Eno Sarris: Yeah his slider is not as good as Cotton’s cutter, so that’s why I see his ceiling as lower. He’s been trying to improve the velo on that slider for years and only gotten a tick or so.

1:34
Guest: mike trout removes mask to reveal he is barry bonds all along

1:34
Guest: art or not pilsner <<<<<< IPA

1:35
Guest: i call matt adams fat adams tbh

1:35
Zigs: Only place I have ever seen Organic Ur-Pils was down in Bakersfield. Crazy. Where do you even find it? I tried it there because I had heard you talk about it and I liked it.

1:35
Eno Sarris: I get it at BevMos in the peninsula and had it in New York too, so I rec it because I figure it’s semi-national.

1:35
Ed: Billy Butler – Country Breakfast. End of fat guy nickname debate

1:35
Guest: oaktown > sf 9/10 days

1:35
Eno Sarris: There’s some guy that comes on any piece I write about Oakland talking about how bad Oakland is and I’m like, have you been recently?

1:36
Ed: Oh, also Rich Garces and “El Guapo” – ok, Butler and Garces tie

1:36
Michelle: Even though I don’t get it, I like that they call Steven Vogt “Everything Bagel”

1:36
CamdenWarehouse: “When you buy a box of Ritz crackers, on the back of the box, they have all these suggestions as to what to put on top of the Ritz. “Try it with turkey and cheese. Try it with peanut butter.” But I like crackers man, that’s why I bought it, ’cause I like crackers! I don’t see a suggestion to put a Ritz on top of a Ritz. I didn’t buy them because they’re little edible plates! You’ve got no faith in the product itself.”

1:36
Pud Galvin: marketwatch had a graphic today that showed the SF metro area spends 77% of their income on rent. That’s Adam Warren 2016 ZiPS projection of 4.0 WAR level insanity.

1:37
Eno Sarris: I wonder how far that metro area goes, but yeah rent is nuts up there.

1:37
A cat: A mock apple pie mocks the eater.

1:37
Moltar: Country Breakfast is still the best nickname going, but I do love saying La Potencia

1:37
Ed: Re: Sonny’s question – 17% of American men between the ages of 20-40 play who are 7 feet tall play in the NBA. It’s being 7 feet tall

1:37
Guest: uncle boy’s = best dinner date spot in sf

1:38
brant brown dropped the ball: urban dictionary:””TO BE ON LUDES”: Idiotical, Dull Minded, Dim-Witted, Stupid, Lacking intelligence, Feeble Minded.

1:38
Eno Sarris: we have a more regional definition.

1:38
Turnip: If you had to have a generic baseball nickname, would you choose E-Sarr, Eenie, or Sarrie?

1:38
Eno Sarris: oh god those are terrible. Probably just E. I’ve had that a lot.

1:38
Colt Holt: Alfredo simon is the big pasta. Edwin is e5

1:39
Jojo: Can you give us some mid to low tier dynasty sp who you’d have on your acquire list?

1:42
Eno Sarris: Lower than Nola and Rodon then… and not Cotton, so: Dylan Bundy, Tyler Skaggs, Blake Snell…

1:42
Stevil: Oddest rebuilding plan: Padres or Reds?

1:42
Eno Sarris: Reds. Padres bought all the international guys they could.

1:42
Jojo: You were intrigued by Jon Lamb last year. As dynasty owner, are you out now?

1:42
Eno Sarris: Another back surgery and more velocity loss was a bigtime step back. I’m only interested now.

1:43
Dynamite Dan: Are you in favor of a pitcher of Otani’s skill level also hitting or would you prefer he only pitch?

1:43
Eno Sarris: Both.

1:43
Guest: it’s supposed to snow here do u ever miss snow

1:43
Eno Sarris: Just a little bit. But I’ll be in New York in late January and I’m sure, even if it doesn’t snow, that I will be cured of that nostalgia.

1:44
Bork: Eno, do you think Polanco and Yelich are mvp candidate sleepers in 2017? They seem to posess all the tools and improve every year

1:44
Eno Sarris: More Polanco because he has some loft. Yelich has made some strides with the launch angle, but not enough for me.

1:44
Not Colby: My friend is upset you’re answering all my questions and none of his. Post this so I can laugh at him please.

1:44
Eno Sarris: Let’s all point and laugh!

1:45
Eno Sarris: (seriously, sorry, the number of questions is starting to pick back up again since football ended I guess, and your chance to get every question answered has passed)

1:45
Dude: Why wouldn’t the yankees sign hammel and fister? Both likely get a one-year deal.

1:45
Eno Sarris: Hammel but not Fister. Never fister.

1:45
Jesus: Eno how would you rank Aaron Sanchez, Nola, Salazar, Carrasco, Degrom for next year

1:46
Eno Sarris: Carrasco DeGrom Salazar Sanchez Nola, but last two super close

1:46
Otis Redding: Was PEAK Eno using his hair to endear himself to the ladies?

1:46
Eno Sarris: Oh yeah, and Kama from the Kama Sutra is my middle name.

1:46
Best Nickname: Mashin’ Trey Mancini

1:46
Nelson: El Caballero!

1:47
Snarfle: Remember when the A’s had Sogard (do they still?) and if he got a hit the scoreboard that went around the stadium in a ring would light up with “Nerd Power!!” I asked my friend if he was a nerd and she said she thought it was entirely because he wears glasses.

1:47
Eno Sarris: I mean he *really* looks the part, even beyond just the glasses, but Jed Lowrie is the dude that has asked me the nerdiest questions.

1:47
dago: Eno, Make Yordano Great Again (Well not again)… but what is he missing? According to Brooks, he features a Fourseam Fastball (97mph) and Curve using a Knuckle Curve grip (84mph), also mixing in a Change (87mph) and Sinker (97mph). His hard 12-6 really resembles more of a slider (http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2016/3/7/11165110/yordano-ventura-royals-curve-slider-pitchfx-spin-rate-movement). What would you do to fix him?

1:48
Eno Sarris: He’s missing extension and fastball movement. It’s straight and it looks 1-2 mph slower than the gun.

1:48
Guest: dear god i’m only kidding don’t go to uncle boy’s for a dinner date

1:48
Guest: unless you want it to be your last dinner date

1:48
Eno Sarris: “El Farolito”

1:48
toimmy lasagna, sr.: enosaurus

1:48
Eno Sarris: okay dad

1:49
Paul: I had it in my head that Hipolito Pichardo was nicknamed “El Meatball” but then I googled it, and…I guess that was just my own internal nickname for him

1:49
Sonny: Re Ed: Do you think 83% of people who can throw 100mph sell insurance? I imagine at least 33% of people who can throw 100 get paid to do so

1:49
Abe: Last night I was rocking my son to sleep while Giannis hit a buzzer beater in MSG. Do you have any moments like this?

1:50
Eno Sarris: Oh man what was it… oh one the Mets games on their run to the Series, I yelled about something and my boys were settling down to sleep and they were like WHAT HAPPENED IS DAD OKAY

1:51
Scott: Just tossing this out there – how great has Trout been in a historical context? Top 3 starts to a career all-time?

1:51
Eno Sarris: Best?

1:51
tenaciousdeucer: Hey Eno, I have the “opportunity” to go to a Toppling Goliath barrel aged stout release party. Cost is $200 for three bombers plus swag – plus other exclusive buys. Drive would be 5 hours round trip. Also, would have to call in sick to work. Not totes in love with barrel aged stuff but this is supposed to be the real. Should I do it?

1:52
Eno Sarris: Man, can you get pseudo Sue or King Sue? That would do it for me.

1:52
Guest: remember when we all thought it was crazy that dombo traded fister for robbie ray, and then ray got better but not with the tigers [sad flame emoji]

1:52
Eno Sarris: Ray added velo, still doesn’t really have a change. Strikes me as a lefty Pineda with less command. That can’t be elite, can it?

1:53
Dude: I refuse to believe most woman are attracted to the men they are with. I mean, just look at us.

1:53
Eno Sarris: inoright

1:53
Eno Sarris: Damn okay I gotta write this Rajai Davis piece. Thanks for hanging out!!

In response to the nickname question I’ve been trying to get Tommy “LIT” Pham off the ground for about two years now. Spread the word.
