Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 3/17/16

12:46
Eno Sarris: No idea where this floated to me from. I gather they were popular around when I was born.

12:01
Brian: Your pitcher rankings suggest you’re lower on Verlander than most. I know Sporer is a believer. What are you seeing that he isn’t?

12:02
Eno Sarris: I think I’ll revise that up. Apparently he’s got the best fastball spin rate, and when seen in tandem with the fact that he found his rise again last year, I think a lot of his struggles were release point related. If that’s true, and he’s healthy, it all seems fixable. I’ll move him up above Shields, maybe into the low 30s. I should update those.

12:02
Bork: Can you get a free agent to get an Eno clause in his contract in which you get to be around a team 24/7 like Laroche had?

12:03
Eno Sarris: Judging how Greinke gave me an hour last week after he told the beats that they had to pool their questions, I might have a chance.

12:03
Astro Boy: Who’s leading the way for the Astros’ 1B job as of today?

12:03
Eno Sarris: Taylor White?

12:03
Wayne: Does Cano bounce back this year, or are we seeing the beginning of the end?

12:03
Eno Sarris: I think health was a big part of that picture.

12:03
Jack: Eno, there isn’t a real possibility Buehrle returns to the South Side – is there?

12:04
Eno Sarris: Doubt it if he’s not throwing, but the point was to stretch my mind and think of anything that *could* happen, not necessarily what’s likely to happen. There are plenty of reasons to argue against each of my bold predictions, as well as this White Sox one.

12:04
Tommy B: We arroyo gone, do we like Ross and Roark even more now?

12:04
Eno Sarris: Ross. Worried that Roark gives way to Giolito fairly soon.

12:04
Please Help: Specific question but much appreciated if you can answer it. I’ve been offered Smyly for my Semien in an AL-only league. I could use the pitching and I have Rollins on my bench, but man I love Semien this year. Would you pull the trigger?

12:05
Eno Sarris: Nah. I’d rather pump up Rollins with a good first week or few, and then try to trade for a struggler I like.

12:05
Rob M (Ohio): Who ya got in the NCAA Tourney?

12:05
Eno Sarris: NO BRACKETS AND IT FEELS SO GOOD

12:05
Andy: I have no basis behind this but I feel like David Peralta is going to have a huge year. Thoughts?

12:05
Eno Sarris: Hits the ball hard to all parts of the field, which is a great way to start.

12:05
Bork: Your “Shelby Miller will make me happy I didn’t trade him” sounds a lot like “I couldn’t trade Shelby Miller and have drank enough to make an argument to convince myself that I win by keeping him”

12:05
Eno Sarris: Ok.

12:06
Andrew: Hi Eno! I have first pick in my draft this weekend. Keep 3 years no penalties 5×5 w/ OBP instead of AVG: Who do you pick between McCutchen, Gordon, or C. Seager? Am I overthinking it by leaning Seager? Thanks!

12:07
Eno Sarris: Cutch clearly out in front in an OBP league and unless it’s super deep, Seager has to hit close to his top percentiles to make it the wrong decision.

12:07
Whit: Do you like Rizzo over Arenado this year fantasy wise?

12:07
Eno Sarris: I do. Rizzo Is not a minus in any category with those steals, and I’m not sure Arenado hits 40 again.

12:07
Dock Ellis’ Altered Reality: Would you be amused by a game of mirror image baseball? i.e. switch 1st and 3rd base. Infielders become left handed.

12:08
shubbles: over/under: my shammy or my clammy?

12:08
adam: Scrap the HR Derby. I want moar BATFLIPZ

12:08
Eno Sarris: Batflip Derby Interlude.

12:08
Tony G.: I have Rich Hill as part of my fantasy staff. Is he done for? Should I be leaving him on the pine for a few starts at the beginning of the season?

12:08
Eno Sarris: Especially on the road.

12:08
Pat: Who do you think has a better chance of signing back with the Jays, Jose or Edwin?

12:08
Eno Sarris: Jose, if only for non-baseball reasons.

12:09
Texas Dolly: Who’s the closer in Texas on Opening Day?

12:10
Eno Sarris: Sam Dyson. Closer to free agency than Keone Kela, power righty arm with Ks and a super high floor with the GBs, and he got the last save.

12:10
Maxamuz: I’m relying on some sleepers for the back end of my rotation. I have Kluber, Archer, Salazar as my top 3, with Wei-Yin Chen, Jason Hammel, Carlos Rodon, Kevin Gausman and Alex Wood rounding out the back. Am I going to regret this decision not to go more heavy over top end SP in a league with QS / K9 / ERA / WHIP / SV / HLD?

12:11
Eno Sarris: k9 means you have to get as many aces as you can, unfortunately. However, the three ace approach isn’t terrible. I might sit some of those guys in bad matchups to try and keep the k9 high, get some really good relievers.

12:11
Adam: Would you ever see a case for keeping Carrasco over Joey Bats in an auction league, when you know it’s going to be a dogfight for the top SPs, and a ton of SPs are being kept already?

12:11
Eno Sarris: It’s okay, yes.

12:11
Kanye West Fantasy GM: I don’t need your Posey bitch, I’m on my own Dickey

12:11
The Dude of NY: LIFE HACK: Name all of your kids a variation of your own name.

12:11
Ode to Austin Meadows: Call me big daddy when you back that ass up

12:12
Eno Sarris: We are feeling silly today, I like it.

12:12
Bork: So apparently Shark is showing signs of Lincecumitis and is worrying some people. If he bombs and Cueto continues his 2015 struggles, how screwed are the Giants?

12:13
Eno Sarris: They shrugged off the Matt Cain debacle, so they probably going to be fine. At some point every machine slows down, but you have to think at least one of their two pitchers is okay going forward.

12:13
Matt: Michael Wacha or Jake Odorizzi: Both seemed to be relatively equally ranked, but Wacha has a higher perceived value, and will likely be more expensive. Given that, who do you go with, if only one?

12:13
Eno Sarris: Michael Wacha. I don’t believe in Odorizzi’s breaking ball yet.

12:13
The Dude of NY: Eno, Eno he’s our man! If he can’t do it…well…someone else probably can. There are 7 billion of us.

12:13
Eno Sarris: Refreshing!

12:14
daneyko: Mike Moustakas 22 HR, 82 RBI and a solid ,284 AVG. Should be able to duplicate his HR and RBI IMO but…his average will be +/- .272

12:14
Eno Sarris: I’ll take the under on .284, but .272 seems reasonable.

12:14
Adam: Which 3B/OF combo do you prefer: Matt Carpenter/Yasiel Puig or Maikel Franco/Bautista?

12:15
Eno Sarris: Man I love Puig, but I’ll take the Franco package. Dirty.

12:15
Bork: Come close kids, it’s time to teach you how to lude. A lude is something from deep inside you, you can’t just say something and expect it to be a quality lude. A quality lude isn’t sporatic, it isn’t something that just…appears, it–

12:15
Bork: butt

12:15
adam: i’m trying to get good at ludes. my wLude+ was replacement level. back to the tapes

12:15
Eno Sarris: heyo.

12:15
Yakety Sax: Really enjoyed the interview you (and others) did with John Smoltz. When he talks about the fastball-slider or fastball-curve-slider guys that just can’t throw a change, the first guy I thought of was current Brave Mike Foltynewicz. Folty threw a lot of two-seamers last year (more than a quarter of his pitches). You think he should focus on throwing more fourseamers up in the zone to go along with the curve and slider? Also, can Smoltz teach him the split? Lefties absolutely killed Folty last year.

12:16
Eno Sarris: I’ll have to look at his arm slot, but if he’s anywhere close to over the top, yeah perhaps a 4s would be better. Not everyone’s hands work for splitties, and hasn’t he had some injuries?

12:16
Merv Throneberry is back: Thinking of trading Osuna for Dilson Herrera in a dynasty deal in hopes of a 20/15 showing by next year…thoughts?

12:16
Eno Sarris: Roberto? Maybe, but he could start. Marcello Ozuna? No.

12:16
Jake Larsen: Of the craziness that has gone on this offseason, what’s the pinnacle for you thus far? Gossage? Yo’s cars? Panda’s tantrum? Fowler?

12:17
Eno Sarris: None of it is really out of character for baseball though is it? Though the tantrum being about defensive stats is fun.

12:17
The Dude of NY: You compared Samardzija to Lincicum on Twitter. Besides both having difficult names to spell, what are the odds that Samardzija is a disaster from year one?

12:19
Eno Sarris: The reasoning: stuff guys with bad command that age poorly as the stuff goes. Lincecum’s bendy stuff was better, too. Probably not that insane, and apparently he hit 94, but even if he averaged something like 92.4, even if you give him a full mph between now and the season — which is too much for me three starts in — he’ll be at a career low, and his number of 94+ fastballs (which have much better outcomes) will be drastically down.

12:19
Bryce Sharpens His Image: Eugenio Suarez is moving up some depth charts, should we be more interested than before?

12:19
Eno Sarris: Always liked him a bit. Not going to go over board or anything.

12:20
Rusty: What types pitchers would you target in a 10tm ESPN league where everyone rosters 9SP’s all year and cycles through pitchers on the waiver wire like crazy? Do pitchers with projected low innings totals, but with great ratios and stuff (Drew Smyly, Rich Hill come to mind) have more value in a league like this? Would you spend 33% of your budget on pitching in a league like this?

12:20
Eno Sarris: Don’t bother with the ‘sleepers.’ Get some aces early and then peace out on starters. You’ll be rotating guys in anyway, how long you going to keep Rich Hill if he gets rocked for a few starts.

12:21
No one beats the Wiz: Are you bullish on Kyle Hendricks? He was solid in the 2nd half last year (2.84 xFIP and 9.78 K/9). Seems like a great value and a chance to finish inside the top 30 SP and he’s going at like pick 210 right now in Yahoo! Playing for a good Cubs team!!

12:22
Eno Sarris: As much as I like Warren, after talking to Hendricks, I’m sure he’ll win the job. I like that he’s refining his curve to steal strikes, but I’m a little worried that he only has one swinging strike pitch. Still, good command, a mechanical adjustment that improved his command last year, a refined pitch this spring, I’ll absolutely take him there.

12:22
Randy Savage: I’m in a 1 catcher obp league. Should I try to wait towards the end of the draft to grab whatever one of Grandal, Vogt, or Wieters falls, or should I go ahead and pay for say a Lucroy? There seems to be a lot of same-ness after the first 3 or so catchers are off the board.

12:22
Eno Sarris: Take the guy that drops.

12:22
Bork: You should be a child with you everywhere like Laroche, by the time he is an adult he will be the ultimate lude machine, and your life will be complete.

12:22
Eno Sarris: And he would be nonsensical to 99% of the population.

12:23
AL-only Guy: I currently have one closer in my AL-only league. I’ve been offered Cody Allen for my Hanley, and I’m not sure if I should consider it. I’ve always been good at plucking vultures off the wire, so I feel like giving up a guy with Hanley’s upside could be a mistake so early on in the year. Not to mention, I don’t exactly have a great backup to replace him as of yet. What say you?

12:23
Eno Sarris: Try to find your closer. One closer and a few setup men is a good spot for March.

12:23
Eno Sarris:

12:24
Lovin The Lander: Someone spent $20 on Verlander in our $260 league.

12:24
Eno Sarris: That’s too much.

12:24
The Dude of NY: Walt Jocketty seems to think the Reds can be competitive this year. Is he delusional, really delusional, really really delusional, or does he have incriminating photographs of Moreno and is about to acquire Mike Trout for Phillips?

12:24
Eno Sarris: Wants to keep people buying tickets as long as he can.

12:24
Johnny Bench: What’s your approach during the weeks between having an auction and the season beginning? Do you sit on your hands and let the blueprint unfold, or constantly make moves if they’ll make your team better?

12:24
Eno Sarris: I’ll move some bench pieces around…

12:24
Tyrion: What should I do about weiters? not much available on the waiver wire.. who should I target in a 16 team league if he’s out for some time…

12:24
Eno Sarris: Wait.

12:25
Rusty: I have Addison Russell value at about $6 in a 10 tm league w/ 18hr/10stl/.265 BUT It’s a keeper league where you can keep them forever at $5 over the prior year price. What price would you pay for Addison Russell in a league like this?

12:25
Eno Sarris: I can’t imagine pushing past $10.

12:25
Spirou: Avisail Garcia making adjustments to his batting stance + now having a clear path to regular playing time.If i tell you 270-20 HR over a full season. Are you a believer ? Or maybe the WS will make a trade ?

12:26
Eno Sarris: The only thing that makes me wonder about him is that he did find some exit velocity and more fly balls late last year, which might mean the power is coming. Mostly I feel we’ve waited long enough.

12:27
RotoLando: Give us an unreasonably optimistic prediction, based on a super small sample size.

12:28
Eno Sarris: Basically my Jake Lamb bold prediction?

12:29
80085: whats on the docket for st pattys day?

12:29
Eno Sarris: Chasing one snotty kid around, chasing one poopy kid around, one beer in hand, not green.

12:29
Bork: Your “Ok.” is worse than my girlfriends, Eno. That hurts.

12:29
Eno Sarris: Isn’t it amazing how they can do that? Fine.

12:29
Manuel: You ranked Darvish 35th. Do you believe he’ll be in full form when he returns?

12:30
Eno Sarris: He’s moving down. Command comes back late and he may not come back till later in year with the new longer TJ timelines.

12:30
Art Vandelay: It’s getting (deservedly) hyped a lot already, but I just have to throw in my recommendation that the new Kamaiyah mixtape is the perfect thing to bring in the warm months.

12:30
Eno Sarris: That bassline

12:30
brittle: Can I bring my kid to this chat?

12:31
Eno Sarris: ‘whats my cracky daddy’

12:31
martin: nick castellanos is my sleeper…what do you think?

12:31
Eno Sarris: Sure. There are incremental adjustments in his rear view mirror, and he’s at the right age. Would be a hell of a turnaround from a real baseball perspective, as he’s been below replacement level so far, but from watching, I have hope.

12:32
Dave: When are the playing time battles articles going to be completed?

12:32
Eno Sarris: Should be soon?

12:32
RotoLando: Forget bat flips, I want someone to do the MC Hammer dance around the bases after a HR. Would need powerful thighs, though.

12:32
Bork: Batflip Derby would be so good. It could turn into the dunk contest of MLB. Combine dingers with batflip art

12:32
j6takish: This girl in my office won the NCAA pool last year by always picking the teams with Cat based mascots. She was a Kentucky win away from cleaning house

12:32
Eno Sarris: an actual sport-themed interlude.

12:32
Halp: are spin rates published somewhere?

12:32
Eno Sarris: unfortunately no.

12:33
Josh: What are your thoughts on Max Kepler (Min) do you think hell see time in the Twins OF this year?

12:33
Eno Sarris: The hell he will. Bad joke. Yeah, Rosario and Park have enough bust rate, Buxton enough bust and injury rate, and Sano/Plouffe/Park could shuffle in a way that provides Kepler a chance this year.

12:34
Big Bob: In 2 yrs, who’s the better fantasy SS……Seager or Correa

12:34
Eno Sarris: Correa

12:34
Aaron: This year is my first time auction drafting after 6 years of snake draft. Strategies/advice?

12:34
Eno Sarris: Get your values set, have five or six targets per position, and a few ideas of key players that will make you change strategy in other spots. You can get who you want to get, but that doesn’t mean the draft won’t change your plan as it unfolds.

12:35
Jesse: There doesn’t seem to be consistency in the way “#1 starter, #2 starter,” etc. is used. Is a #1 starter a #1 for some team (meaning a top-30 starter)? It seems like it’s more often used “#1 for a contender” (meaning a #1 is really a top-12-type pitcher). I am flummoxed when I hear people say, for example, Jose Berrios projects as a #3 starter if he pans out. If he pans out, he’s the Twins’ (non-contender) #1 starter today, isn’t he?!

12:35
Eno Sarris: Not every team has a number one and we have to have a normalized term, #1 starter has to be top 15 or 20 type pitcher, IMO. I see a tier around 15-17 every year in fantasy terms, so that’s what I think of as an ace.

12:36
Erik: Is the Cubs’ hitting-first rebuild an accepted good strategy? As a Phillies fan, should I be worried that the new FO seems to be taking a pitching-first approach, given the success of the Cubs’ rebuild?

12:37
Eno Sarris: Established young pitching seems like gold, but projection systems are worse at finding pitchers, which means opportunity: you can find the guy that’s an adjustment away. The Cubs model is the way I’d go.

12:37
Tom: Are we getting tiers from Rotographs this year?

12:37
Eno Sarris: I’ll tell them all to do their positions as soon as they done with Bold Prediction season.

12:37
80085: silly?

12:38
Ron: You can’t REALLY think Dyson is the Texas closer right now, can you? Sure, Dyson had one save in the playoffs, but I’ve seen nothing from the Rangers that indicate they’re moving away from Tolleson in the closer role in 2016. I understand if you’re wanting to make a bold call, but to say you really think Dyson is the closer right now seems like a big stretch.

12:38
Eno Sarris: I’m scarfing crazy pills but if the season started today, I’d be right. Tolleson just debuted last night and has back issues. You’re right that it’s a stretch on opening day, but I’m not buying Tolleson so that makes Dyson my Rangers pick either way.

12:39
CamdenWarehouse: How can Shark show Linecumitis? He was never that good.

12:39
Eno Sarris: well done.

12:39
Haymaker: Bogaerts or Seager in a keeper league?

12:39
Eno Sarris: Seager. We’ve seen his power in the big leagues and we’re hoping Xander finds his.

12:39
Brew Pen: Smith or Jeffress to start the season at closer?

12:39
Eno Sarris: Smith by a nose.

12:39
Keith Hernandez’s Moustache: Many in Mets-land are knocking the move to release Ruben “Pastrami Sandwich” Tejada. Does it really matter? He was third-string at best. Am I wrong in thinking Matt Reynolds or Gavin Cecchini can provide whatever 2016 Ruben Tejada would have provided even with a major injury that would have opened the door for more playing time?

12:39
Eno Sarris: The defense was never better than aight and the patience was a mirage born of hitting eighth, IMO.

12:40
Jack: Are you a fan of Souza in OBP leagues?

12:40
Eno Sarris: Talent? Yes. Playing time? No.

12:40
Tommy B: Vizcaino or Sam Dyson?

12:40
Eno Sarris: Vizcaino I guess. In those super unsettled situations — Texas is not really one of *those* — I’ll still take a shot at getting the closer from day one.

12:40
Bad Hermit: That song reminds me of the band (no joke) “Teen Porn”. Not the wisest SEO decision there.

12:41
Eno Sarris: Dude, I was searching for Japan’s song “performance” and I’ll just say I didn’t find what I was looking for but I found a whole lot more.

12:41
Yancy from Fort Myers: Favorite fruit?

12:41
Eno Sarris: Goddamit if I don’t love how spicy pineapple is.

12:42
St. Patrick: I drank a hopslam in the bathroom at work

12:42
Eno Sarris: HUZZAH!

12:42
Art Vandelay: Seeing Son Little with Leon Bridges tonight in Oakland. No question, I’m just really stoked.

12:42
Eno Sarris: Man I’d be there but kids and all that. Jeez.

12:42
Guest: I know a wrist/hand injury can be one of the worst for hitters, how bad is a shoulder injury for hitters? Im specifically thinking of Michael Brantley.

12:42
Eno Sarris: Between work done by Jeff Zimmerman and Stephania Bell, I believe he’ll be fine.

12:42
Jack: Who has the best chance of value in a 12-team mixed: Conley, Pomeranz, Finnegan, Anderson, Tropeano?

12:43
Eno Sarris: Tropeano Finnegan Conley

12:43
@outfieldgrass24: Patrick Corbin is limited in innings for ’16. Robbie Ray struggles to log innings. Archie Bradley is limited in innings for ’16. Could making Bradley the handcuff for Corbin, and even Ray, be a “good” opportunity to develop him while mixing L/RHP matchups and limiting overexposure to tired starters and the underbelly of the bullpen?

12:44
Eno Sarris: I wanted to say that Tony LaRussa would never do that, but he’s innovated the game before. They seem like they could really use their depth in an interesting way. Bradley would make a great three inning reliever, IMO.

12:44
Brandon: Your view on Drake Laroche being in a clubhouse?

12:44
Eno Sarris: 1) No other kid is in the clubhouse on the road or anywhere close to 100% of the time.

12:45
Eno Sarris: 2) It does not seem unreasonable to ask a professional to leave a child at home. Who ever gets to do this.

12:45
Eno Sarris: 3) I could see a 12-year-old being a distraction, especially to a player that has been diagnosed with ADHD.

12:45
Eno Sarris: 4) Chemistry is a hell of a thing, and being perceived as being uncaring about a player’s family situation is not a good look.

12:46
Eno Sarris: 5) There are lots of children around in general, and it seems like they could have just made a rule about going on the road or something.

12:46
Eddy: What role does Tony Zych end up having in the SEA bullpen?

12:46
Eno Sarris: One of my favorite saves sleepers if Cishek doesn’t regain that velocity.

12:47
Halp: Conforto or Piscotty for this year? It seems most have Conforto higher but he has platoon issues and worse spot in lineup?

12:48
Eno Sarris: Better skills, or skills we can believe more readily. In this case, I bet on the skills still because the Cardinals team could find a way to get crowded anyway.

12:48
Eno Sarris: This is great.

12:48
Eno Sarris: Though the first version I heard was more dub.

12:48
80085: a guy named goose, with a handlebar mustache, is talking about embarrassing the game?

12:49
Eno Sarris: You half expect to see him wearing nothing but chaps at the Folsom Street Fair.

12:49
Justin: Yesterday Dave said that the competitive NL team with the highest chance to completely implode was the Mets. Aren’t the Dodgers a better candidate? Tremendous volatility of outcomes among all of their position players not named Gonzalez, plus no margin for error among the pitching staff.

12:49
Eno Sarris: Yeah and the Dodgers are doing a better job of getting there right now. Already a key injury in most facets of the team.

12:50
PitchesBrew: The Kakie is a lie.

12:50
Nelson: Bringing your son to work every day is nothing. Eno, you let your 2 kids sleep in your place of work!

12:50
For Laughs:

12:50
Eno Sarris: Wut

12:50
Nextbigthing?: Hey Eno, dynasty draft coming up and looking for the next big thing. Thinking about long term prospects like Kevin Maitain, Shohei Otani and Anderson Espinzona. Any other guys you would recommend as the next generational type prospects?

12:51
Eno Sarris: Jorge Ona is an infielder that could be the best Cuban we’re not talking about yet.

12:51
Bruce: Whos DHing for the Chisox?

12:51
Eno Sarris: Avisail platooning with someone. Haven’t figured that out yet. But they have some money now.

12:51
bigsmooth: Are you buying into Brandon Maurer as a SP. Nasty stuff outta the pen.

12:51
Eno Sarris: adding back the curve that had the highest spin rate when he threw it. There’s a chance.

12:51
The Original Greaser Bob: Thoughts on Ketel Marte in a 20 team mixed league? Give me hope Eno!

12:52
Eno Sarris: Good enough floor that my thoughts on his ceiling (eh?) become less relevant.

12:53
Derek: Beer and Ball question: Thoughts on Einstok beers? What non-baseball country do you think could produce good ball players based on their stereotypical body types? I think Russians could produce an army of 6’6″ 240lb #3 starters.

12:54
Eno Sarris: They make some decent crushable session type beers with good taste. I like Einstok actually!

12:54
dave in slc: I may very well be the stupidest person who follows your chats or comes to this website but how do you look for past articles or updates? example I want to find your pitcher ranks to see if they have been updated and if it isnt in the recent/today stuff I cant seem to find it

12:54
Eno Sarris: Either click on my name on the RotoGraphs page, near the bottom right, or… google probably.

12:55
Maxamuz: Lucas Duda will hit 40 HRs this year. TAKE IT THE BANK.

12:55
LG: Henry Owens…any upside there?

12:55
Eno Sarris: Sure I like the movements on his pitches, and the per-pitch outcomes.

12:55
Dave: Indians just signed Marlon Byrd to a minor league deal. Any interest in an AL only league?

12:55
Eno Sarris: yes.

12:55
dave in slc: another dumb question since i know you rank strasburg above cole, in an NL only would you really bid on Stras and the injury risk and higher cost over a pretty sure and comparable Cole? Just curious on your style

12:56
Eno Sarris: Yeah maybe it’s a bit different in an only league. But I had Tanaka and Smyly as my only ‘aces’ sooooooo

12:56
Elisa Plum: I need to either give up on Oswaldo Arcia or Dalton Pompey (dyansty league). Who should I kick to the curb?

12:56
Eno Sarris: So sorry Pompey.

12:56
Floyd: NL OBP league…Suarez or Story? MAdams or BMoss?

12:57
Eno Sarris: Suarez because all year role is there. Moss because he can play in the OF too?

12:57
Green: Thoughts on the possibility of a bounce-back year for Yan Gomes? +- 20HR?

12:57
Eno Sarris: He refound his power and exit velocity late, I think he can do it.

12:57
80085: to the fan who dissed jocketty..well, he just signed alfredo simon!

12:57
The Cincinnati Kid: Eno! I’m drunk….for you

12:58
Evan Gattis: I’d crack the bat over my head and give the nosebleeds a souvenir

12:58
Mike: Does your strategy change in a 10-teamer vs a 14-teamer? More stars and scrubs because the scrubs are still legitimate players?

12:58
Eno Sarris: Yes, more stars and scrubs in the shallower leagues. More $70 outlays for Mike Trout.

12:59
Justin: Segura worth $17 in an NL only 12 tm 7 x7 (obp, h, sb, r, rbi, hr, xbh)?

12:59
Eno Sarris: no

12:59
Jen: Let’s say another organization came calling about Ray Searage. Clearly hypothetical and contingent on many factors, but despite the different nature of trading for coaches/and front office staff as opposed to trading just players, and with the general codes of allowing staff to move/take promotions, what might an organization have to give up to pry him loose?

1:00
Eno Sarris: The Marlins already stole the minor league pitching guy, and it took a prospect. Plus a nice new title and raise for Ray.

1:00
Matt: You should come back to Chicago. Drinking beer and nerding out on baseball with random people is more fun than drinking beer and nerding out with my usual nerds.

1:00
Eno Sarris: should come in July unless I cover the all star game, but I don’t really like covering the all star game. Except for the Futures Game.

1:00
tywin: Should I be worried about McCullers yet?

1:00
Eno Sarris: of course. any DL is bad DL.

1:01
i peno buttis: i peno buttis

1:01
Silvino Bracho: I’m the man

1:01
Eno Sarris: what a cut fastball from Bracho

1:01
Derek: Living in South Florida sucks this time of year with all the obnoxious spring breakers. Now that baseball season is coming up, this chat sucks because of all the chatters who weren’t here in December are filling up the queue. I WAS HERE IN DECEMBER ENO. I’m hangry….don’t mind me.

1:01
Eno Sarris: I’m here for you.

1:01
PohlDancer: can a pitcher realistically learn a pitch in spring and develop it into an average pitch as the season progresses? I’m referencing papelbon teaching ross to throw a split.

1:02
Eno Sarris: Odorizzi picked it up super fast but is the anomaly. More likely, you see what DeSclafani did with the curve: he threw it in the AFL, then put it away for most of the season, then picked it up again some in Florida, then put it away, then it finally clicked in Cincy. I think I have that timeline right.

1:02
The Original Greaser Bob: Turner ranked #20 3B high, low, or right on?

1:02
Eno Sarris: Low.

1:02
Shit shit shit: Eno! I forgot you guys did daylight savings in the US and we didn’t do it yet here in Germany. I hope I can catch you in time, because MY LIFE DEPENDS ON IT. I’ve got the first overall pick in a 12-team 12 keeper draft. I’ve kept a full lineup on offense other than utility, plus four starters–Archer, Carrasco, Salazar, and McCullers (ugh). Common sense says I should take another starting pitcher with the first pick, like Smyly or Wacha. But my heart says AJ REED SO SEXY. Can I do like Roxette said and listen to my heart? Also: from trades at the deadline, I’ve got ten of my twelve picks happening in the first 48.

1:03
Eno Sarris: You have a full lineup and the first pick is an oft-injured lefty and.. well I like Wacha. Reed in that park is pretty sexy. Listen, we do this for fun, and how much fun would it be to be right on Reed and add him to your team.

1:03
Ricky: Eno chat and chill?

1:03
RotoLando: If you were going to start a street gang, what would the name of it be?

1:04
Eno Sarris: The Grips.

1:04
Eno Sarris: (hard G)

1:04
Sour Ale: Is Addison Russel worth keeping if he costs my 3rd round pick in an 18 team league?

1:04
Eno Sarris: No.

1:04
Elisa Plum: why are some sours so expensive?? $15 to $25 for a 500ml bottle!

1:04
Eno Sarris: They had to brew it (with a fruit most of the time) and then put it in a barrel (which costs) for a year before they could sell it to you.

1:04
Bart: Drop David Hernandez and handcuff Dyson with Tollesen a better strategy?

1:05
Eno Sarris: Nah, keep your toe in a bunch of waters.

1:05
Tom: Thanks on the tiers answer, but we need them sooner, before bold predictions next year. They are one of the best draft tools and we are in the middle of draft season.

1:05
Eno Sarris: I think I hear this argument for every single thing we do. I made getting rankings out a priority this year because of it. I’ll remember this.

1:06
Elisa Plum: Jared Cosart was talking about how Benedict has helped him create a more downward plane with his delivery. He’s always had the velocity; any chance his new delivery makes him an actualy strikeout pitcher?

1:06
Eno Sarris: Still a two-pitch guy with terrible command.

1:06
Ryan: Rubby Evoaldi Corbin Desclafani drop one

1:06
Eno Sarris: Rubby

1:06
Kenny: Eno i’ll pay you 14mil to kick your kids out of the house every time you do fangraphs stuff, deal?

1:07
Eno Sarris: WHERE DO I SIGN.

1:07
Enlightening Round: Eno, stuck in a decidedly stars and scrubs league, any specific advise how to not lose my sh** while having to overbid on every player of real value. All top players go for $10 plus over where they should be

1:07
Eno Sarris: Try to get the guy that goes for $5 over but is near the top. Or just bite the bullet, you need to get a star.

1:07
Nelson: Tyler white? insane stats, but why have we never heard of him til yesterday?

1:08
Eno Sarris: Farnsworth was a fan when he rolled out the prospects.

1:08
Ceetar: Told my wife I want Brooklyn Brewery’s Old Fashioned for Good Friday since I can’t justify $24 myself. Hope she gets it.

1:08
Eno Sarris: Did you have Almanac’s version? Was a bit sweet.

1:09
Kakie Bryan: I am here

1:09
Katie Bryan: My brother is real

1:09
Fan9: Should the white sox boycott?

1:09
Eno Sarris: God no.

1:09
greg: In one of your podcasts, you spoke about having a top closer to anchor your fantasy pen, what guys are you targeting in an auction draft?

1:10
Eno Sarris: Allen and Robertson in the AL. Rosenthal and Familia in the NL.

1:10
Dave: Does this mean Nyquin will start the season in the minors? And can Byrd play the field at all anymore?

1:10
Eno Sarris: Naquin still doing okay because he can play center. Rajai not even a good CF.

1:10
Halp: have there been any studies on soft% or hard% being a repeatable skill yet?

1:10
Eno Sarris: Yeah it’s not great, but better for hitters. Terrible for pitchers.

1:11
JDX: Does Votto look like he’s in better shape than last year? Looks like it on TV.

1:11
Eno Sarris: Last year was the big step forward from my estimation.

1:11
Joey: How do you feel about Benintendi in Dynasty?

1:11
Eno Sarris: warm and tingly.

1:12
The Original Greaser Bob: Do you brew Eno? I’m still setting up my home rig and experimenting with kits. Any that you’d recommend?

1:12
Eno Sarris: Start with a brown, they easier. Also, I’m bad at it.

1:12
brittle: 17$ for Odor ok? (out of 260), worried he’s being over-hyped

1:12
Eno Sarris: I like it. Calculator says you overpaid by three bucks, but that’s okay.

1:12
Matt: I just turned on the Yanks/Bucs game and was reminded how much John Jaso now looks like Drexl from True Romance.

1:13
Eno Sarris: Fire. I’ll tell him that.

1:13
Joe: Rank Zimmermann, Berrios, Wheeler, and Alex Reyes in a 12tm roto dynasty. I have a chance to trade Yu and Berrios for Addison Russell and one of those SPs. Need a SS. Zim seems obvious, but his move to AL really scares me. Don’t need the SP production right away.

1:14
Eno Sarris: You have them ranked right, and I would do that trade in a second. Zimm fine.

1:14
Derek: Okay Eno, can you just do me a solid and explain to me where this Kakie Bryan thing started? I get its an inside joke…but I’m feeling a bit cold standing outside here.

1:14
Eno Sarris: Man I don’t even get it. Some made up name thing.

1:14
Repairman Man: benintendi or devers for dynasty? already have meadows’ ass on my team

1:15
Eno Sarris: Well, poop, I really like Devers too. Probably just take Benintendi anyway.

1:15
Gruntled Gary: I was lucky enough to visit Rare Barrel and Fieldwork in Berkeley. I’m moving to the Bay Area soon, what are some other good spots to check out?

1:15
Eno Sarris: They so good! Cellarmaker and City Beer Store in SF. Drake’s in Oakland.

1:15
Lord Johannes Zizemore: I say, Eno, old boy, when partaking in the observation of a spirited match of your American “yard-ball” upon the pitch, would one do better to closely observe the MY WORD I BLOODY WELL APPEAR TO HAVE TRANSMOGRIFIED INTO SOME SORT OF LUPINE CHAP

1:15
JDogg: Do you see Harper getting plunked a bit more this year due to his comments .. and therefore having a little more injury risk?

1:15
Eno Sarris: that would be so stupid.

1:16
Eno Sarris:

1:16
Bart: Hyun-soo Kim having a slow start in ST – Does he start in LF for Baltimore?

1:17
Eno Sarris: No idea, but I’m actually a little worried, because he’s clearly the worst of the three guys coming over from Korea right now.

1:17
CH: I tried Dieu du Ciel’s Solstice D’été Aux Framboises as a first sour. I don’t know whether I liked it or not.

1:17
Eno Sarris: Try again!

1:17
NOTwatchingMARCHMADNESShere4Eno: Hi Eno. I know you and Paul have a strategy section in the podcast. I am avid listener of the podcast. Always like the hear your updates on basketball games. I am highly contemplating the idea of drafting following the “Sweeney Plan”. I’ve been against “punting” categories, but at the same time I feel that this is the perfect year to go ahead and do so due to the number of aces available. What is your take?

1:17
Eno Sarris: I don’t know that plan. Is that waiting on your ace? Then I like it.

1:17
daneyko: Uehara or Carson Smith as setup man ?

1:18
Eno Sarris: Uehara. Worried Carson is hurt.

1:18
Randy Savage: Cucumber kimchi: the best kimchi.

1:18
Eno Sarris: Want.

1:18
Mike: Why so low on Tyler Duffey?

1:19
Eno Sarris: Seems like a one pitch pitcher.

1:19
Der Wilderbraumeister: Common, Homey!!! Liverpool v. ManU…who you got? Showing now at Kezar!!!

1:19
Eno Sarris: I will never root for Man U.

1:19
SLICK RICK: Hey Eno, are you #familyfirst ?

1:19
Eno Sarris: I mean, I’ve turned down jobs because of family issues, but I’m not completely in LaRoche’s corner.

1:19
Warm, Kakie Center: *Airhorn Intensifies* 9 days to a Maine Beer Co. Dinner release. Get hype!

1:20
Bart: Dodgers experimenting with Andre Ethier leading off. Good idea and do you think he’ll get more playing time?

1:20
Eno Sarris: Not going to play much against lefties either way, but might get a few more PA up there. The deeper the league the more interesting he is.

1:20
Maxamuz: Byung-Ho Park is going to kill it in the majors.

1:21
Eno Sarris: I’m into it. Maybe not a great batting average, but I believe in the power.

1:21
JDogg: how crazy is it to think that if David Peralta breaks out on the SB category, that he’ll outproduce Brantley by years end?

1:21
Eno Sarris: not.

1:21
Jim: end game SP in 20 team leage– Mat Latos or Chase Anderson?

1:21
Eno Sarris: Chase Anderson.

1:21
Shawn: Kolsch – underrated beer style. When they good (Trillium, Capt Lawrence), they really good

1:21
Eno Sarris: True, but I’m too in love with my IPAs and sours to go that way a ton.

1:21
uru: Farquhar, McAllister, or Zych in a holds league?

1:21
Eno Sarris: Zych.

1:22
Jv: Villar going to be ok in 12 team?

1:22
Eno Sarris: Bench sleeper type pick.

1:22
Bill Gaits: What’s the limit you’d pay for Addison Russell in a three-keeper $260 auction? My sense of self worth depends on it

1:23
Eno Sarris: Projected to be worth two bucks, but I have a piece about him coming out soon that outlines adjustments he’s made.. $5?

1:23
The Cincinnati Kid: Story and Reed….Who debuts first? Who’s bigger asset this year?

1:23
Eno Sarris: Story debuts first, gets more volume, Reed better player.

1:24
Joe: Eno! Should I take Wacha or Tanaka as a 5th rounder in a standard H2H league?

1:24
Eno Sarris: Wait and take the other guy in the next round.

1:24
Matt: Also, regarding Latos: Are you as surpised that Garret Jones has yet to acquire a ferret? He seems like he has the most potential to steal the “Best Pet Name by Professional Baseball Player” Award

1:24
Jerry: Sweeter Jehri Curl: Juan Guzman or Eno Sarris

1:24
Eno Sarris: Guz

1:24
Joe Dirt: I have a Javy Baez/Ketel Marte combo that I’m going to plug and play at SS. I figure that’s a sneaky good strategy, combining the power of Baez and speed of Marte. Validate my opinion?

1:25
Eno Sarris: Sure.

1:25
NOTwatchingMARCHMADNESShere4Eno: Sweeney Plan is coined after a Todd Sweeney. The strategy consist of actually garnering all aces when everyone is going after offense, and going speed/highBA guys, after you have consolidated an all-ace team, hoping to win 80% of your categories, and sacrificing HR/RBI. I was thinking of implementing the plan in a 5×5 cat league. A little hesitant on doing so. A mock landed me Goldy, Max, Fernandez, Strasburg, Cole, Carrasco, and then guys like Polanco, Pillar, Eaton, Ketel Marte & co as offense.

1:25
Eno Sarris: You know what, I hate the bats in the third and fourth rounds…

1:25
Bart: Juan Nicasio struck out 10 of 14 batters yesterday. Has he changed his delivery and is he worth a stash?

1:25
Eno Sarris: Does he have a changeup yet?

1:25
Enos Arris: Wild Sour series by Destihl Brewery in Illinois. Highly recommended.

1:26
Eno Sarris: Strip your enamel sour, but real nice price point.

1:26
John: I have Jung Ho Kang as my 3B. Need someone, in a points league, to hold me over until he returns. I prefer higher floor types in these situations. Would you prefer Solarte or Adonis Garcia?

1:26
Eno Sarris: Solarte. Should have eligiblity to be your util guy after Kang gets back.

1:26
Kinsler: Ian Kinsler seems criminally underrated, especially given his R, SBs and hits. What am I not seeing?

1:26
Eno Sarris: Aging, losing power.

1:26
Thomas: SOLDS league, are you taking Miller and/or Betances over all but the Top 3 or 4 closers?

1:26
Eno Sarris: yes.

1:26
kris: 4th round Carrasco or 9th round Wacha?

1:26
Eno Sarris: Carrasco.

1:27
Devon Travis: tell me about my clavicle

1:27
Eno Sarris: v important for power, I’d rather buy low on him next year.

1:27
Matt: Do you always answer questions in order? Always wonder if – when I see a question answered – I should lose hope that any unanswered question that was asked prior will be answered.

1:27
Eno Sarris: I scroll through in order, yes.

1:27
Cody Reed: Did Votto say anything about me when you spoke to him?

1:28
Eno Sarris: Yes. He said you were good.

1:28
John: If you had to put one of these catchers on your team, who would Eno take? Mesoraco, Realmuto, Tom Murphy, Chironos or Derek Norris?

1:28
Eno Sarris: Mesoraco.
