Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 3/20/14
| 11:51 |
: yo
|
| 11:52 |
:
|
| 11:52 |
: Just because.
|
| 12:00 |
Hey eno i got a slight problem, |
| 12:00 |
: I know, I’m addicted to fantasy baseball too.
|
| 12:00 |
When do you expect me to play my first regular season game for the White Sox? |
| 12:01 |
: Opening day. They really gonna go with Keppinger/Gillaspie?
|
| 12:01 |
Cobb for Alvarez in a dynasty? Just lost Medlen and Beachy. Ok on power. |
| 12:01 |
: Sure.
|
| 12:01 |
Eno my man, I just traded bucholz, grilli for skaggs, beltran. Please tell me i’m not an idiot. |
| 12:01 |
: I like it.
|
| 12:01 |
Eno, does the Miller Fortune ad “undistilled” grind your gears too? |
| 12:01 |
: Terrible. WHO’S DISTILLING BEER?
|
| 12:01 |
YOU get a Tommy John surgery! And YOU get a Tommy John surgery! And YOU get a Tommy John surgery! And YOU get a Tommy John surgery! And YOU get a Tommy John surgery! And YOU get a Tommy John surgery! And YOU get a Tommy John surgery! And YOU get a Tommy John surgery! And YOU get a Tommy John surgery! And YOU get a Tommy John surgery! And YOU get a Tommy John surgery! : AND YOU GET A SECOND ONE

This Chat is Maxamuz Approved |
| 12:02 |
And as the crowd begins to gather, the rumble of their chant grows louder. It rises in a crescendo, chanting one name… ENO! ENO! |
| 12:02 |
: Pumping me up with a lure, which might be strange if you didn’t know.
|
| 12:02 |
Will Salazar be this years Harvey? |
| 12:03 |
: Totally could be, but he’ll also probably have an innings limit or a pitch/game limit that will tamp down his ultimate upside.
|
| 12:03 |
Who will my primary 3B be in 2014? |
| 12:03 |
: Won’t have one. Aviles, Chisenhall, Santana. Timeshare!
|
| 12:03 |
What do you think Rizzo’s value is in a keeper league? Do you think he could turn into a 1st round fantasy pick within 3 to 5 years? |
| 12:04 |
: Unsure if he hits such great heights, but if the power takes off into mid-thirties, he has the contact rate to pair it with a great batting average. I have a bold pick that he’s top-five at his position this year.
|
| 12:04 |
Visiting friends in CT – suggested breweries and/or brews? |
| 12:04 |
: Looks like New England is easily tops. http://beergraphs.com/leaderboards/breweries/?cc=US&state=CT
|
| 12:05 |
Eno Eno, I need your help before I get on to my shenanigans here. Kershaw/Ajax/Hosmer for Bumgarner/Choo/Butler in BA/OBP/SLG league |
| 12:05 |
: Kershaw side.
|
| 12:05 |
Hi Eno. What do you think the Cardinals a) “will” & b) “should” do with Carlos Martinez? |
| 12:06 |
: Will start him, and probably should, just to see what could happen. Don’t forge that he’s a sinker/slider guy, though, and that he has the platoon splits to match that repertoire. A younger Masterson with more gas might still work out, but unclear if he has Masterson’s command.
|
| 12:06 |
Pharcyde all over my snowboard playlist |
| 12:06 |
So major fantasy sports site (yahoo) crashes right before march madness tipoff. Oops! |
| 12:06 |
: Yikes.
|
| 12:06 |
: Good thing I don’t bother with college basketball any more.
|
| 12:06 |
Gregorius finishes 2014 playing for _____? |
| 12:06 |
: The Mets.
|
| 12:06 |
He’s not emo, he’s Eno! |
| 12:06 |
If both were draft eligible today who gets taken first Mike Zunino or Travis d’Arnaud? |
| 12:07 |
: Zunino still younger, eh? I’d draft TdA, but some would go for youth and tools.
|
| 12:07 |
I drafted Chris Johnson near the end of my draft and Moustakas went undrafted. Would you drop CJ for Mous? |
| 12:07 |
: Nah CJ is totally under-rated. Good batting average, 12+ homers, RBI, he’s fine. Moose has had many good springs.
|
| 12:07 |
In a K/9 league, where do you put Yordano Ventura now? |
| 12:08 |
: SP5. The curve seems obvious seconds after he releases it, haven’t seen a good change.
|
| 12:08 |
Am I good with this pitching staff in a 12 team league? Led by Scherzer, Bumgarner, Shelby Miller, Cashner, Dickey, Ross, Smyly? |
| 12:08 |
: Yes, in a league of any size. Well maybe not a four-teamer.
|
| 12:08 |
12-team 5X5 standard roto–my rotation is bumgarner, tanaka dickey kazmir and lackey and I am debating dropping lackey for Toronto’s Hutchison…I don’t know anything about him and wonder what u think, since ur pretty good at eval pitching. thx |
| 12:09 |
: I think I’d stick with Lackey, but he’s fairly vanilla. Problem is, so’s Hutchison. Average slider, below-average but okay change, average four-seamer, below-average sinker. Supposedly his velocity has been up a bit, but I’m not super excited. I’d rather drop Lackey for a guy like Skaggs with more upside.
|
| 12:10 |
eno i got a slight problem, i blanked during my fantasy draft and got 3 RP in a 2 RP league, all of which are good, (chapman, Nathan, and Robertson) so i am now 1 SP short, ideally i would like to trade one of my closers for a starter but any suggestions? (10 team mixed) Also i have a strong outfield, strong corner infielders and weak starting pitching in second base. I was recently offered Cano, Salazar, and Posey/Bautista for Miggy, McCann/Dominic brown, and Nathan should i consider it no? |
| 12:10 |
: Don’t do the trade, go find a starter (replacement level is really high in your league), and worry about trading a reliever when you get chapman back.
|
| 12:10 |
Michael, I just got a call from Mrs. Sarris. You apologize RIGHT NOW and you boys shake hands. |
| 12:10 |
: Good one.
|
| 12:10 |
Projections on Shelby Miller seem to be everywhere. |
| 12:11 |
: Mostly just innings pitched, which I guess is based on our depth charts, which is based on trying to figure out if the shut down last year was a legitimate health thing or just a precautionary thing. His change-up is better than Wacha’s cutter, though, and their number one off speeders are similar in quality.
|
| 12:11 |
I just got back from Spring Training in Fort Myers (and Tampa) and let me tell you, I’ve never seen a game delayed by a swarm of Bees in LF. Carp yelled to the Ump, “THERE’S BEES!” *Stadium proceeded to play Flight of the Bumblebee* as a Pink Hat Red Sox fan trying to smack talk a Yankee fan, the Sox fan didn’t even know who they faced in the WS last year. I’m a Red Sox fan and I wanted to hit him over the head with an empty beer can. Thats my scouting report. |
| 12:11 |
my main problem with baseball games is that I can’t pair them with blind dates, so this is a huge relief for me http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2014/03/20/mlb-teams-with-match-com-for-club-singles-pages/6643623/ |
| 12:11 |
Is JJ Hoover going to close games? |
| 12:12 |
: This is such a crapshoot. Usually Ks and velocity are the only way to go other than manager comments. Unfortunately, Broxton owns the velocity but Hoover owns the Ks. I’m going with elbow health as the tie breaker, as Broxton is just now pitching in games.
|
| 12:12 |
Edwin Jackson a good $1 flyer in ottoneu to replace Medlen? Similar k rates, probably reliable for 160 IP, though taking a hit on ERA. |
| 12:13 |
: I’d have to think you could do better. Jackson has been underperforming his peripherals for a while now.
|
| 12:13 |
Friends are out drinking at the bar watching madness, I’m drinking at home chatting about fantasy baseball. Normal? |
| 12:13 |
: For us, yes, normal.
|
| 12:13 |
Joey Bats or Ellsbury in 5×5 OBP league? |
| 12:13 |
: Ellsbury. More projected PA, five-category goodness.
|
| 12:13 |
I have Bradley Jr. in a keeper league. Should I be ready to drop him or Sizemore’s performance so far just a mirage? |
| 12:14 |
: I can’t believe Grady will stay healthy, but if there was a way to pick up Grady, I might.
|
| 12:14 |
Hey Eno. Thanks for doing the chat today! I recently drafted Tanner Scheppers in my AL-only league, and I’m not sure what to expect from him this year. Do I have a starter, set up man, or best case scenario, future closer on my hands? |
| 12:14 |
: Really don’t think closer. Still think setup man. You probably hoping for starter at this point. Good news is, his stuff is excellent, and I think he could make the transition if his body holds up.
|
| 12:14 |
Who is the most average regular in your opinion? Nick Markakis always comes to mind for me. Average in nearly every scence isn’t he |
| 12:15 |
: Yeah that’s pretty good. Adam Lind?
|
| 12:15 |
Anthony Rendon or Kolten Wong at 2B? |
| 12:16 |
: RENDON! Love him this year. Liked that he stayed healthy and showed good BB and K rates. I think the power will embiggen this year.
|
| 12:16 |
Talk me down. I’m ready to get rid of Franklin since he doesn’t appear to be going anywhere |
| 12:16 |
: I’m holding in my deep leagues until the last possible moment. I think this SS thing is him being shopped. Baltimore, Toronto, Mets, they all need MIs and there are two on the market.
|
| 12:17 |
12 team mixed roto league. I took Archie Bradley with my last pick as a 6th SP on the chance he wins a rotation spot with Corbin going down. However, sleeper darling Corey Kluber did not get drafted and Dan Haren was just dropped to the wire. Grab Kluber now? You really think he’ll have value in a 12 team mixed? |
| 12:17 |
: Kluber all the way for me. Bradley was having trouble commanding his fastball.
|
| 12:17 |
Do you feel like Billy Burns can post a .350-.375 OBP with 30 SB if he gets half a season with the As? |
| 12:17 |
: Next year maybe.
|
| 12:17 |
Thoughts on Detwiler to pen. Jordan or Roark for 5th spot and why? |
| 12:18 |
: Love Tyler Jordan. Wrote about it recently in that ‘balanced arsenals’ piece. He’s got an above-average slider AND change by whiff rates, and a great sinker by GB rates. Go get him. (In deeper mixed at least).
|
| 12:18 |
Is Kendrys Morales worth holding onto or better to go with a deep sleeper type like Ozuna, Dickerson, Olt, etc? |
| 12:18 |
: I’d hold a bit.
|
| 12:18 |
Going to see the Cubs in D.C. on the Fourth of July. No question, just freakin’ geeked! |
| 12:18 |
J Gray or Jameson Taillon in 2014? |
| 12:18 |
: Taillon closer.
|
| 12:18 |
Hosmer or Craig at 1B? |
| 12:18 |
: Hosmer.
|
| 12:18 |
Why do you follow me? Also, how sad are the tigers currently? |
| 12:19 |
: Who knows. We gotta go ask the other 1400 people why I follow them if we want to figure this one out. The Tigers, man, just the problems of a veteran team I guess. I’ve been worried about Anibal since he started throwing his junk so much and then took a 15-day break for the shoulder last year. The shin thing just came out of nowhere.
|
| 12:20 |
One of my favorite beers is replacement level on BeerGraphs. Does that mean that I’m an old baseball columnist stuck in the dark ages praising things like grit, RBIs, and wins? |
| 12:20 |
: No it means that beer is a really really tough world right now, with tons of great beer. Our top 100 represents a tiny sliver of the beer world..
|
| 12:20 |
Javier Baez. Opening Day lineup for the Cubs? |
| 12:21 |
: I can’t believe it. He’s swinging from his shoes and they don’t need to start his clock.
|
| 12:21 |
Hi Eno…in talking with Votto, do you sense his plate approach will be more of the same this year or will he look to hit for more HRs, etc.? |
| 12:21 |
: Got a piece coming up about this. He’s changing some things, but not the things fantasy people want to hear, unless they are in an OBP league.
|
| 12:22 |
i feel like all pitchers should just take the rest of the spring off at this point and maybe be kept in one of those witness protection safehouses |
| 12:22 |
: put them in a bubble like bubble boy
|
| 12:22 |
Peavy claims to feel healthy as ever this spring (don’t they all.) Could we see a 3.6ish ERA? |
| 12:23 |
: More interesting is how many innings he might pitch. I have him down for 150ish I think. He’d be a lot better if he could push that number. Still think a high-threes ERA is the more reasonable ERA projection. Not like he’ll get a ton of gas back.
|
| 12:23 |
: I just imagined someone re-ingesting a fart. I’m ten years old.
|
| 12:23 |
realistically, what do u think the chances are for santos to take over for janssen? i traded benoit for Reddick and only have 2 closers. wondering whether i should drop santos and try to get hoover or the set up guy parra (who no one is picking up) |
| 12:24 |
: I’d go get Hoover. I like Santos but that’s a longer-term play.
|
| 12:24 |
Hey Eno! The other day, Jose Quintana allowed nine runs on seven hits and two walks without retiring an out. If this had been the regular season, are we potentially looking at the worst outing in fantasy history? |
| 12:24 |
: Good god you’d hope you were in an H2H league with that one. He took a ball off the shin the other day, and I’m hoping all this is just him having some trouble landing on that foot.
|
| 12:24 |
Note that “this year’s Harvey” could imply a very sad ending… |
| 12:25 |
: But Salazar has already had his Tommy John! Oh no, what have I said.
|
| 12:25 |
How are you feeling about Drew Hutchinson in a 10 teamer points? I have the option of him, Estrada, Pineda or Milone. |
| 12:25 |
: I don’t see that kind of upside. Estrada clearly my choice.
|
| 12:25 |
I’m in a 10 team h2h league and want to take a shot at a young arm in the last round or two. Archie Bradley is one name that comes to mind. Who do you like? |
| 12:25 |
: I like Walker, Skaggs better.
|
| 12:25 |
Eno what chu got against barleywines? |
| 12:26 |
: Past my ABV threshold. All I taste is sweet and alcohol.
|
| 12:26 |
: I do like one! Avery’s Hog Heaven I think is the name. But some call it a triple IPA.
|
| 12:26 |
Someone in my otto points league shelled out $18 for Javier Baez on draft day… madness? |
| 12:26 |
: There’s no point to that. I don’t buy prospects for more than $4. I want them to be cheap if they hit.
|
| 12:26 |
How high are you drafting Jose Abreu? |
| 12:27 |
: I still want the draft position to reflect a slight risk and offer me possible value if he hits. 7th-8th would make me feel better about that.
|
| 12:27 |
When is the Chicago Tour Stop in ’14? Gotta hit up Revolution & Half Acre |
| 12:27 |
: Always around P4K festival, so July some time. Might combine with a trip down to the all-star game.
|
| 12:27 |
favorite $1 player this year in standard size 12 teamers? Calhoun/Archer/Kazmir/Avisail? |
| 12:27 |
: Calhoun. I know he was old for his levels and played in hitter’s parks, but he’s at his peak and has a job and has a high floor.
|
| 12:27 |
I have Pujols and Napoli at 1B and CI. Am I running with too high of an injury risk there? |
| 12:28 |
: Probably should have a decent 1B on the bench.
|
| 12:28 |
Hi Eno, would you take Matt Adams at $1 with a chance to keep or Aroldis Chapman at $10 for one year only given Chapman’s status? |
| 12:28 |
: I almost always prefer the hitter over the closer, and the money makes it easier. And yes, I know Adams has flaws. But at .260/25+ he’s got value even if he’s not as good this year.
|
| 12:29 |
ENO!!!! I’m always fascinated by your beer knowledge and insight, but I rarely hear anything mentioned about my beloved cities of Toronto and Montreal. Do we have nothing to offer you? |
| 12:29 |
: Bellwoods, Amsterdam, Unibroue… they just don’t get much distro down here in California. http://beergraphs.com/leaderboards/breweries/?cc=CA
|
| 12:30 |
so I accidentally punted on a closer in my auction draft earlier this week, ended up with Sergio Santos, Danny Farquhar, and Daniel Webb. What are the chances I’ll actually get a single save in the first month of the season? |
| 12:30 |
: 11%
|
| 12:30 |
Did you trade your heroes for ghosts? |
| 12:30 |
:
|
| 12:31 |
Why does everybody hate Carson? Why do YOU hate Carson? |
| 12:31 |
: I love Carson. I went to high school with him. I appreciate his quirks.
|
| 12:31 |
What is the perfect depth for a fbb league to play? Should 4th starters be in play along with platoon guys or should it be deeper or more shallow than that? |
| 12:32 |
: Always up to you. I like my 20-team mixed 40-man roster league, but I also like 12-team mixers. Don’t love ten-teamers where there’s just so much on the wire.
|
| 12:32 |
Pretty scary stuff that happened to Chapman last night. Does this speed up the implementation of some sort of helmet for pitchers? |
| 12:32 |
: They’ve got one approved, but pitchers don’t like it yet.
|
| 12:32 |
Eno! I drank six beers before drafting and now the ace of my staff is Mike Minor in a H2H. What do I do? |
| 12:32 |
: Drop a bench bat or two for high-upside starters.
|
| 12:32 |
What do you think of Taijuan Walker this year? Some sites say huge sleeper. Is he polished enough if his shoulder is ok? |
| 12:33 |
: There’s a lot of promise in that arm. I’d put him in my last pitching slot in a mixed league for sure. I like going high upside there, over the Kennedy types.
|
| 12:33 |
i’m commissioning a deeeeeeep dynasty league. a sister league was started from the waitlist (i’m not part of the sister league). one owner joined both leagues and just quit the sister league mid-draft after causing a ton of drama. so far my league doesn’t have a problem, but am I obligated to do or say anything to this owner? |
| 12:33 |
: Beat him.
|
| 12:33 |
To Nick in ATL: Two Roads has a sweet beer room and Sunday they have a BBQ master doing lunch there |
| 12:33 |
Has Tanaka’s value changed since the AL LABR draft? I have a man crush, give me a reasonable max bid? |
| 12:34 |
: I’ve been a little more optimistic since he’s looked good and everyone’s saying the right things. I went to $24 in my ottoneu points league, but that’s out of $400. I doubt I’d pay more than $12-15 though, there are just so many great names that have pitched in the MLB before.
|
| 12:34 |
OH MY OH MY |
| 12:35 |
every time someone says projections are “everywhere” i imagine visiting other websites, only to find that all other websites are just showing nothing but Shelby Miller projections |
| 12:35 |
Brad Miller having a monster spring!!!! Could he be a top 8 SS in a league with OPS not BA. Thanks! |
| 12:36 |
: I’ve been all over him, but I’m not changing my opinion too much based on spring. He is a little more valuable in that OPS league, and top eight is only stretching my projection a bit (I think I have him top-ten or twelve if I remember right).
|
| 12:36 |
Eno! So I’ve recently seen New Belgium kicking around Calgary. I’ve tried the Ranger IPA so far, I enjoyed it. Your thoughts? What kind of rep does New Belgium have in the US of A? |
| 12:36 |
: They’re everywhere. I hate Fat Tire, but that’s just me.
|
| 12:36 |
What’s your fridge beer Eno? |
| 12:37 |
: Right now? I got AleSmith X pale ale, Hopocalypse from Drake’s, Lagunitas IPA.
|
| 12:37 |
guys someone is developing a video game where you play as a real-life bear, no plot or anything. that’s right, BEAR SIMULATOR |
| 12:37 |
number of people in chat higher or lower today? basketball going on says less, but more people online and home from work says more |
| 12:37 |
: says 12:14 next to your name so wow.
|
| 12:37 |
Can you please slap me for getting even a little excited about Grady Sizemore? |
| 12:38 |
: Done.
|
| 12:38 |
I passed up Billy Hamilton in the 7th round of my draft and took Allen Craig instead. How badly did I screw up and do you believe in Hamilton’s hitting performance so far this spring? |
| 12:39 |
: Writing today about how small the sample is this spring — you barely have 1/3 the sample you need to say something interesting about strikeout rate. It’s better than him being bad… I think worst-case scenario, he bats from the right side most of the time and is a 2/5 time player with 45 steals or so.
|
| 12:39 |
Aoki on steals. Over/Under 25. Not a great success rate. But leading off under Yost, I’m going to say..just over. 26. agree or disagree. |
| 12:39 |
: Over and i think Yost is a big deal on this. Collette might have a piece on this soon.
|
| 12:40 |
How soon is too soon to take Chris Archer in a keeper draft? |
| 12:40 |
: Top ten rounds. Maybe even top 15. No change-up yet.
|
| 12:40 |
Who finishes higher with ranking in 2014–Kalhoun or Eaton? |
| 12:40 |
: Calhoun.
|
| 12:40 |
After all of the closers get drafted, which guys should I target in hopes they will take over at some point? |
| 12:41 |
: Brothers, but he may not count any more. Farquhar. Webb in Baltimore, Webb in ChicagoAL. Qualls/Crain. Dane De La Rosa.
|
| 12:41 |
You’ve got me drinking the Brad Miller kool-aid like a madman.Guzzling it, really….but is he going to really bat 8th? |
| 12:41 |
: I think this is the part that could change this spring and change his projections the most.
|
| 12:41 |
Have to move one of these SP off my team: Gray, Cingrani, A. Wood, Burnett. |
| 12:42 |
: I hope you mean trade. If you do, I suppose Wood has the best combo of trade value and value to your team. If your’e talking dropping, there’s only Burnett.
|
| 12:42 |
M-ENO-tonous this chat isn’t…….when i am busy with the baseball my wife says Are you playing imaginary baseball with your imaginary friends? you are real aren’t you? |
| 12:43 |
: You can pinch me. I just slapped someone.
|
| 12:43 |
Of these three (who have received a decent amount of preseason buzz), which is ranked lowest at the end of the year: Kluber, Nova, or Porcello? |
| 12:43 |
: Porcello maybe! I mean I love what he does, but his best pitch gets grounders, not Ks.
|
| 12:43 |
A noble spirit embiggens the smallest man!” ?Jebediah Springfield |
| 12:43 |
Injury or not, Manny Machado sucks in fantasy |
| 12:43 |
I can protect Pat Corbin for either 3 years at $4 per, or 5 years at $6 per. Which is the better option? |
| 12:44 |
: With the 30% failure rate on TJ, I think none of the above. I had the option of extending Harvey at 8/13/18 and didn’t.
|
| 12:44 |
Yordano Ventura. Too legit to quit, mediumly legit, with an option to quit, or Dewon Brazelton? |
| 12:44 |
: I think I love everything about this question. I’d take the over, but the under is definitely possible.
|
| 12:44 |
: And now might be a good time to shop him. I know I am.
|
| 12:44 |
Why doesn’t Nate Eovaldi strike out more batters? |
| 12:44 |
: He’s missing a third pitch.
|
| 12:44 |
You’re high on Hosmer eh there Eno boy |
| 12:45 |
: Just saying that .285+/20/10 is an under-rated skill set. HR=SB pretty much in terms of marginal value. What if you had a guy that could easily hit .290 with 30 homers? You’d be all over that.
|
| 12:45 |
Is a rotation of Fernandez, Cole, Lynn, Garza, Masterson, Taijuan Walker too thin on IP and missing an Ace? |
| 12:45 |
: to me, you have two aces and it’s the middle that’s light. Just get another SP on your bench.
|
| 12:45 |
Would you keep Miguel Cabrera for $46 in a 10 team h2h format? |
| 12:46 |
: Yes, the shallower the format, the better the $1 players and the more expensive the best players.
|
| 12:46 |
can i survive with rendon and mesaraco as starters in a 10 team 1 CA league? |
| 12:46 |
: Those are light for a ten-teamer as much as I like them. I bet someone interesting is on your waiver. You can wait to open the season, I guess, they both have top-ten upside. They just may not hit it.
|
| 12:47 |
Would you drop Timmy or Kluber for any of Estrada Skaggs Bradley Ross ? |
| 12:47 |
: Timmy for Estrada/Skaggs is the most interesting. I think I’d keep Timmy but if he’s not commanding the FB in the early going, I’d have itchy trigger finger.
|
| 12:47 |
Do any of Trumbo, Jose Abreu, or Chris Carter hit 40 homers this year? |
| 12:47 |
: If I’m picking one, it’s Trumbo. “No” is a safer pick tho.
|
| 12:47 |
Out of all the stadiums you have been to, which one has the best food? |
| 12:48 |
: AT&T has crab sandwiches, sushi, Orlando bowls and more. Citi has shake shack and blue smoke. One of those two.
|
| 12:48 |
It might not happen this year, but will I eventually be the next Adam Dunn? |
| 12:48 |
: Worse, maybe. Davis doesn’t have a history of walk rates like Dunn.
|
| 12:49 |
I heard Bryce harper last night say how important it is for him to hit a ground ball to 2b with man on 3rd and less than 2 outs. But the analytical community thinks rbis are a bad measure and that ground balls to 2nd base is a bad outcome. How to you analytics deal with Harper’s intention of driving in run with a ground ball to make it a positive measure in your community? Thanks. |
| 12:49 |
: A ball in play is better than a strikeout with men on base. I think he’d actually be rewarded for that in the numbers.
|
| 12:49 |
This is a terrible problem to have: Kelly Johnson or Dustin Ackley? Need to start one and cut the other. |
| 12:49 |
: KJ for me. More positions, more counting stat upside.
|
| 12:49 |
Eno who wins your beer bracket for the year so far? |
| 12:50 |
: Just had a The Bruery The Wanderer and whooooooboy. Hopslam was aight, but this one rocked.
|
| 12:50 |
Can you help me find a under the radar holds guy? I am looking at paco rodriguez, ross detwiler, luke gregerson, Jason motte. Thanks |
| 12:51 |
: Kintzler, Herrera, Kelley (love him), Germen, Venters, Delabar, Andrew Miller.
|
| 12:52 |
Do you consider Cody Allen an elite RP in a SV+Holds league? |
| 12:52 |
: Yes.
|
| 12:52 |
How awesome will I be in 2014, if at all? |
| 12:52 |
: You will have some great starts that will make everyone pick you up. Then you will have some stinky ones that will clear the room. Why is everything about farts today.
|
| 12:53 |
Over/Under 3.95 ERA for Phil Hughes? |
| 12:53 |
: Over. Under his ERA last year, but there’s only so much a park can do.
|
| 12:53 |
Hosmer, Kemp, Jansen, Donaldson. Pls rank — dynasty league, no inflation/restrictions. need to keep 1 |
| 12:53 |
: Hosmer
|
| 12:53 |
10-team 5×5 keep 4, starving for K’s. Was offered Tillman + Cruz for my Wil Myers. Anything to fear on Tillman? |
| 12:54 |
: I hate this deal. Keep the best player. Tillman’s barely a ten-teamer. I have him ranked around 70th among SPs.
|
| 12:54 |
Who would win in a fistfight betwixt Kyle Farnsworth and Ty Cobb? |
| 12:54 |
: Cobb with the fists only but if it was MMA, Kyle would do some crazy wrestler move.
|
| 12:54 |
How will it work with Dylan Bundy the 1st half of the year–will Yahoo consider him on the DL and I can stash him? |
| 12:55 |
: Has to be put on the DL, but he will be. You just might have to wait until after the first games.
|
| 12:55 |
RE: Quintana. Don Cooper said his release point was “too over the top” and was causing command issues. |
| 12:55 |
Can I survive with Brad Miller and Xander Bogaerts as my SS options? Who should be my number 1 |
| 12:55 |
: Yeah I think you can thrive. I might platoon them (Miller away from home, XB at home) until someone makes the decision for you.
|
| 12:55 |
Am I legit? |
| 12:55 |
: Gonna play every day and I think the rates will drop, PAs go up, counting stats only move marginally if that.
|
| 12:56 |
Do you think Kluber can be a top 10 AL-only SP this year? I’ve seen a lot of love lately, but he hasn’t really looked good in spring training |
| 12:56 |
: that’s aggressive. I had him in the top 30 for AL-O.
|
| 12:56 |
Was I wise to reject the Astros offer for an extension, even though I haven’t proven myself yet? |
| 12:57 |
: I might have taken it with that K rate. I’d hire someone who would tell me that, too. Because if he’s good enough, he can get a huge deal one year into FA too. If he’s not… But nobody ever tells these guys they might not be.
|
| 12:57 |
You chat like your hair is on fire, and it pleases me. |
| 12:57 |
: Well, it is!
|
| 12:57 |
Eno had three letters, God has three letters, cant be a coincidence.. Thanks for all your insight this spring so far.. |
| 12:57 |
: You know I only post these because my wife thinks I play with myself all day and have a silly job.
|
| 12:58 |
Has there been a correlation study done with batting average and contact %? |
| 12:58 |
: I ran it once. Probably wrote it up somewhere too. Yeah, it’s negative. Ks are bad for BA. Mostly because they are an auto out.
|
| 12:58 |
What’s a realistic upside for Headley? |
| 12:58 |
: .280/18/10 with good OBP, goes up if traded.
|
| 12:58 |
A year ago we would have said Walker, Gausman, Archer a significantly stronger prospect group than Wacha, Sonny Grey, Salazar. Was the small sample of a few more MLB innings last summer really enough to change that picture so completely? |
| 12:59 |
: No, and given the costs, I’ve bought from the former group this year given that revelation. Well, I’m not that up on Archer because of the change up problem.
|
| 12:59 |
Brandon Belt going to be a cheaper Hosmer this year? Go for him late in my draft? |
| 1:00 |
: Dunno if he’ll hit 20, and his K% means a lower BA, but it could be close enough to make this SMRT smart.
|
| 1:00 |
Are tournament brackets for beers fun or super gimmicky?http://www.draftmag.com/beerbracket/ |
| 1:00 |
: I’ll take fun.
|
| 1:00 |
barleywines taste like a 2xIPA that sat on the shelf too long, mostly |
| 1:00 |
: I agree with this.
|
| 1:00 |
How many toilets do you think John Kruk has broken in his lifetime? |
| 1:00 |
: Let’s ponder.
|
| 1:00 |
Hi – for 2014 only, bogaerts, gattis, or eaton. Leaning eaton. 5×5, 12 team. Thanks |
| 1:00 |
: Bogaerts. Position, upside. Eaton mostly a high floor at an easy position.
|
| 1:00 |
Chapman out 6-8 weeks facial surgery |
| 1:00 |
the name “Kipnis” sounds like a pokemon |
| 1:01 |
: Those were right in a row in my q and that’s just a real swing in emotion for me.
|
| 1:01 |
Gausman a good flier in a 10 team H2H? Bullpen bound? |
| 1:01 |
: Deeper leagues. There are safer guys with good upside on your wire.
|
| 1:01 |
So I missed the middle rounds of one of my drafts (thanks, INTERNET CONNECTION) and I wound up with three SS: Simmons, Cabrera and Lowrie. I have Cano at 2B, so I won’t be playing Lowrie there. I also have a shortage of pitching. Which of those three would you be trying to trade? I’m in a relatively deep weekly H2H mixed league. |
| 1:02 |
: Lowrie for sure. People forget the injury risk. Was just joking with someone who sees the A’s daily that we’ll see Simmons as soon as Jed needs a break.
|
| 1:02 |
I will be paying attention to the tournament until I’m out of the $1b. So, like around 3 PM today. |
| 1:02 |
: See I just put that time lost back into my life.
|
| 1:02 |
Hey Eno! Big craft beer and baseball guy here too (from Toronto). I’m interested in using sabermetrics to help guide my fantasy draft this year. I’ve thought about trying to use a couple (2-3) sabermetrics to help guide my fantasy draft this year, but I’m not sure which ones would be the best to use. For position players, the stats categories are the traditional AVG, SLG, OBP, R, HR, RBI, SB, while for pitchers, its along the lines of W (KILL THE WIN!), WHIP, ERA, SO, BB. Which sabermetrics would you guys use to drive your draft choices given these categories? And would you simply look at last years data, or pooled data from the past 2-3 years (assuming the player is not a rookie/second year guy)? |
| 1:04 |
: The simplest projections take last year times five, the year before times three, year before times two, divide by ten, so if you can figure out a way to weight last year more than the year before, try it. Also, K and BB percentage, for both hitters and batters, are your guideposts. The simplest way to predict pitcher performance is K%-BB% and it’s really effective.
|
| 1:04 |
thanks for the pink floyd song. i was really looking for a nice pick-me-up after all this injury news |
| 1:04 |
Juan Pierre tell your GF to stop sending me videos |
| 1:04 |
: hmm don’t think that’s the pick me up JP was looking for.
|
| 1:04 |
Rutledge worth a hold in a deep 16-team mixer? |
| 1:04 |
: For just a little bit longer. But it looks like he’s the backup MI which is not exciting.
|
| 1:05 |
Hey Eno, staying up this weekend for the Australian games? |
| 1:05 |
: Iv’e got a two-year old. I think DVR will handle that.
|
| 1:05 |
Is semien a sleeper, can we expect him to take over a starting role somewhere in that infield this season, and what can we expect from him if he gets somewhere near a full seasons PAs? |
| 1:05 |
: I think he’ll improve his plate discipline but still have an iffy BA. Some power, some speed, and a starting job in the second half. one of the MI there will either play good enough to trade away for a good haul, or bad enough to release.
|
| 1:06 |
Seems like pitchers’ helmets wouldn’t have prevented the Aroldis injury, since he got hit in the face. |
| 1:06 |
A helmet would not of helped Chapman. It hit his eye, wouldn’t some sort of protective goggle be more apropos? |
| 1:06 |
: Helmets and goggles: the future will be strange.
|
| 1:06 |
Ike Davis 2014? Good sleeper? |
| 1:06 |
: OBP leagues yes.
|
| 1:06 |
Bourbon: more cost effective than beer. Discuss |
| 1:06 |
: Beer’s up to 10+% ABV these days.
|
| 1:06 |
What should the Jays do about second base? And if u say stick with Goins I’ll cut my fingers off. |
| 1:07 |
: No idea. If there’s a third baseman they can find, move Lawrie over there?
|
| 1:07 |
Dan, Jeff, and Dave frequently grouse about answering fantasy questions in their chats. Do you have issues with answering real-life questions in your chats? For instance, do you think Andrelton Simmons can repeat his spectacular 2013 defensive showing this season? |
| 1:08 |
: No problems. I think Simmons’ work is built on positioning (he puts himself deep in the hole knowing his arm can make the throw) and sneaky athleticism. But his kind of numbers haven’t been repeated yearly. So I expect regression but still think he’ll be a +10 SS or more.
|
| 1:08 |
True or False: Sleepers are overvalued in auction and boring vets are where the real value is |
| 1:09 |
: I dunno. In AL-LABR, I used my values built on sober projections (mostly just a straight meld of Steamer and ZiPS) and I ended up with a young team because nobody would pay the normal price for those numbers. People also don’t trust young players and if you get a pre-peak lineup, at least the variance on the projections is in your favor. A post-peak lineup really only has one way to go.
|
| 1:09 |
Fantasy baseball makes you evil. For example, Chapman getting domed is good news cause I get to pick up a waiver wire closer. Just wrong… |
| 1:09 |
Does Carson look like Wes Anderson, because he speaks with the exact same timbre in his voice. Every time I hear his podcast, I picture Wes Anderson wearing a scarf or beret. |
| 1:10 |
: No but we did discuss the possibility that he looked like Joey Pantalone in Arizona.
|
| 1:10 |
I’m not seeing enough of a difference between Kipnis and Kinsler to justify a 40 ADP discrepancy. I think one is on the decline, one on the incline, but they’re paths are crossing. What am I missing? |
| 1:10 |
: I have Kinsler hitting 13 homers and stealing 15- minus bases. I have Kipnis hitting 25 homers and stealing 25+ bases.
|
| 1:11 |
Playing in my first ever razzball league. Who are some good guys to target? Plate appearances seem to be very important. I really want to draft Ruben Tejada with my first pick but in real life baseball I hope he gets benched ASAP, so I’m very torn. |
| 1:11 |
: Sorting by reverse WAR should get you some guys that got a lot of plate time but are bad..
|
| 1:11 |
Jedd Gyorko in OPS league…discuss please |
| 1:11 |
: I think his walk rate will improve this year.
|
| 1:11 |
You buying Chris Owings? |
| 1:12 |
: Eh. .270/10/20 type upside IMO.
|
| 1:12 |
Number one deep sleeper nobody has made a consensus pick on at Fangraphs issssssssss…….? |
| 1:12 |
: Been going with Carrasco. He’s got three above-average off speed pitches and a sinker that gets 60+% GBs.
|
| 1:12 |
What’s your projection for Yordano Ventura? 12 team mixed league worthy, or more of a streamer? |
| 1:12 |
: Upside makes him worthy in those leagues, but I’m not sure he’ll stick all year.
|
| 1:12 |
On a suggestion, I had a Southern Tier Creme Brulee Stout last night. I am now suing to cover costs of my sudden diabetes. |
| 1:13 |
How many fantasy teams have been destroyed by people overhyped by meaningless spring results? |
| 1:13 |
I love March Madness. It’s one of the great harbingers of baseball season! |
| 1:13 |
If you had to pick one who would you want. Rougned Odor, Clint Frazier, Kyle Zimmer, Mark Appel or Alex Myer |
| 1:13 |
: Love Meyer. Might take him over Appel.
|
| 1:13 |
Who would you put the most faith in at this point, Nefatali, Hunter or Rodney? |
| 1:13 |
: Rodney might do it ugly all year.
|
| 1:13 |
Hey I live in Fort Collins where Fat Tire comes from. Maybe answer my question?Late rounds in keeper league. looking for possible keeper and help this year. How rank Ruggiano, Pollock, Cain, Baez, G. Polanco, O. Taveras? Caveat…Have to keep guys in minors on my bench until they come up. |
| 1:14 |
: CAin, Pollock, Polanco. Cain gonna have a job, so health is biggest deal and you’ll see that soon. Pollock okay but a righty with issues against righties in past. Polanco the best prospect because I think he’ll be up first.
|
| 1:15 |
Got my 1st Ottoneu draft tmrw night man im nervous… |
| 1:15 |
: Probably won’t finish in the first night unless you took over a team. That first draft’s a bear.
|
| 1:15 |
Rizzo or Alfonso? 5×5 in a util slot |
| 1:15 |
: RIZZO
|
| 1:15 |
My George Springer for his Danny Salazar. Did I do alright or gave up too much in Springer. AL only keeper league |
| 1:15 |
you drafted George Springer in the 14th in our Hustlers league. I got Adam Dunn three picks prior. I hate you. |
| 1:16 |
: You know I’d still take Salazar for him. But in that league, it’s OBP so he’s a better OBP prospect.
|
| 1:16 |
Please, in laymans terms, explain where the ‘Zips’, ‘Fans”, and ‘Steamer’ projections come from. |
| 1:17 |
: Fans come from fan projections, which you can input on each player page if you log in. ZiPs is Dan Szymborski, who chats here every Monday and might tell you something of how he does it. Jared Cross and his students made Steamer projections, which use result stats but also input things like fastball velocity and pitcher defense.
|
| 1:17 |
do you like Paxton over Walker this yr and longterm? |
| 1:17 |
: maybe this year but not long term.
|
| 1:17 |
Im pumped about the bear simulator |
| 1:17 |
it’ll be so tough for Brad Miller to crack that rock-solid lineup in oh wait it’s Seattle |
| 1:17 |
What do you mean Brothers may not count anymore? You see him as the closer? |
| 1:17 |
: yup.
|
| 1:17 |
Matt Cain or Shelby Miller in a points league that values Ks? |
| 1:17 |
: Shelby
|
| 1:18 |
Arenado pull a .275/25/85 in 2014? |
| 1:18 |
: under on the HR over on the upside BA.
|
| 1:18 |
12 team keeper. Hill at 2b, Everth at SS, B.Miller, Bogaerts on bench. Do I drop give up on O.Taveras and his injuries and pick up Rendon? Or is that too many MIs? |
| 1:18 |
: Shop Everth.
|
| 1:19 |
I went with Lowrie over Brad Miller in a points league that heavily weighs runs and RBI. Good or bad? |
| 1:19 |
: If Miller hits 8th, maybe good. I’d take BM though. Oh now we’re talking BMs.
|
| 1:19 |
A lot of experts seem to believe Billy Hamilton is going to hit .230 and have a sub-.300 OBP. While it’s possible the public is still slightly overrating Hamilton, is it also possible that many experts are underrating him? I could see a .310 OBP with a TON of SBs and runs. |
| 1:20 |
: He’s had an up and down OBP. If he sits against some tougher righties, I could see a better OBP.
|
| 1:20 |
What do you think of Mike Olt’s fantasy value? |
| 1:20 |
: Better in OBP leagues and even then, have to be in a deep dynasty type league.
|
| 1:20 |
Are you on the Dickey bounce back bandwagon? |
| 1:21 |
: Yah, to some extent. What makes it hard is that when other pitchers go to the DL, Dickey sticks around and pitches poorly. So if you own him, watch for mentions of back trouble even if he doesn’t go on DL, you may want to put him on the bench.
|
| 1:21 |
Anything good to say about Austin Jackson this year? |
| 1:21 |
: Tigers should run more this year.
|
| 1:21 |
Do what you want with my body. |
| 1:21 |
Safe to just drop corbin in redraft right? |
| 1:21 |
: yes.
|
| 1:21 |
Is anyone at FG looking at the apparent TJ Surgery epidemic? And maybe how to reduce the odds of causing the injuries requiring TJ? |
| 1:22 |
: We’ve done some research into pitch mix (seems like a ton of sliders could up your DL chances some) and control (high walk rates can mean inconsistent deliveries can mean injury) but everything is on the order of millimeters in terms of predictions.
|
| 1:22 |
How many farts can a bag actually hold? |
| 1:23 |
Worried about Kipnis’ 30% increase in Ks and stable BB walk? |
| 1:23 |
: Could mean something for BA, but if power improves, he could hold steady in BA despite higher K%.
|
| 1:23 |
Does it make sense for the Tigers to put together a package for S. Castro? Do they have the pieces to make such an offer? Would they do it? Cubs have Baez/Alcantara waiting in the wings. |
| 1:23 |
: I think they looking more stop-gapish.
|
| 1:23 |
Thoughts on Max Stassi? Jason Castro seems pretty solid. |
| 1:24 |
: I know the team loves Stassi. I think they’ll bring him up and play him some, and if he does well, they’ll consider trading Castro.
|
| 1:24 |
Dean Anna. Who is he and why should I care? |
| 1:24 |
: High floor play everywhere infielder that could hit .300 and is on a team with octogenarians at every infield position.
|
| 1:24 |
Favorite tactics to employ during an auction in terms of nominating? |
| 1:25 |
: I’ll throw some duds early but then I need to jump in and learn something about who I might own with my throw.
|
| 1:25 |
am i that good good OBP league pick? |
| 1:25 |
: I really like him.
|
| 1:25 |
What is an Orlando bowl? |
| 1:25 |
: Orlando Cepeda’s burrito bowl type things, with jerk sauce and other great additions.
|
| 1:25 |
I’ve been to AT&T a dozen times and I have no idea what an Orlando bowl is…should I be ashamed? |
| 1:25 |
: Center Field. But no, because the food there is great. I didn’t even mention the Gilroy Garlic Fries.
|
| 1:26 |
I just squeezed JJ Hoover off the WW. What kind of talent do you think I can shake down from the Aroldis owner? He has no closer now. Nelson Cruz? Nolan Arenado? |
| 1:26 |
: he probably won’t trade Arenado for him, maybe Cruz, but he’ll go get Broxton and maybe he’ll think he’s fine.
|
| 1:26 |
George Springer will be the next Matt Kemp prior to the injuries |
| 1:26 |
: Thanks for the prediction, Ass Man!
|
| 1:26 |
What is the dumbest injury you ever got? Ever step on a cactus or get hurt “washing your car”? I hit myself with my own car once. |
| 1:27 |
: I can’t beat that.
|
| 1:27 |
Can I save 20+ still? Also Two-Hearted or Hopslam? |
| 1:27 |
: Maybe. Hopslam. But I used to really love Two-Hearted, just think the beer world has gotten crazier since.
|
| 1:28 |
Regarding the Quintana question earlier, a while back I looked at the impact of Porcello giving up 9ER in 2/3 innings against the Angels last year. Bumped his ERA by over 0.70 runs for the year, if I recall correctly. |
| 1:28 |
Can I put “multitasking” as a strength on my performance review if the tasks are watching the ncaa tournament and participating in this chat? |
| 1:28 |
Bundy was sent to AA, unless he’s on the MLB DL I don’t think he shows the DL in Yahoo FBB, unless he’s on the 25 man roster. |
| 1:28 |
|
| 1:28 |
villar or b miller? need steals. |
| 1:28 |
: villar is steals only thing
|
| 1:28 |
more saves or Marshall or Broxton? |
| 1:28 |
: Broxton
|
| 1:28 |
I’ve been on a Deschutes kick lately. Mirror Pond, Inversion, or Red Chair? |
| 1:28 |
: Red Chair easy
|
| 1:28 |
Dynasty league question: If you could hang on to one SS prospect between Addison Russell and Francisco Lindor, which guy would you go with? |
| 1:28 |
: Russell easy
|
| 1:29 |
OBP League where all qualify at 1B: Rank Abreu, Rizzo, Butler, Craig. Thanks! |
| 1:29 |
: Rizzo Abreu
|
| 1:29 |
If your wife reads these chat transcripts I’m pretty sure she will think you have a silly job… |
| 1:29 |
I LIKE BAYS BOLL |
| 1:29 |
cant say 20 homers + 10 steals = 30 homers, cause 10homers = 10RBI (minimum!!!!) probably double |
| 1:30 |
: this is true, but hoz makes a lot of contact and those hits turn into RBIs too. in any case, he has value people don’t see because they in sBs.
|
| 1:30 |
Kruk has broken 26 toilets. |
| 1:30 |
tell me estrada wont burn me this year? h2h points |
| 1:30 |
: If HR allowed are really negative, maybe, but I like him.
|
| 1:30 |
If you were the Mets, who would you give up for Didi? |
| 1:30 |
: Palawecki (they need a C) and a worse arm than Montero. Tapia?
|
| 1:30 |
went to a barley wine fest by mistake only good one was ballast point 3 sheets love the rum taste the rest were awful |
| 1:30 |
Hey Eno,Instead of doing a linear regression, have you guys ever tried running neural net analyses to account for multicollinearity and non-linear relationships between inputs? |
| 1:31 |
: I have something perfect for this. Would love help.
|
| 1:31 |
Am i the only one who thinks jayson werth is being undervalued in drafts? |
| 1:31 |
: No, but I’m worried about PA.
|
| 1:31 |
ENO, need some RPs with SP eligibility I can use to help my ratios por favor |
| 1:31 |
thoughts on josh johnson? |
| 1:32 |
: enough upside to roster, enough downside to jettison quickly
|
| 1:32 |
how much hop slam, is too much hop slam while drafting? |
| 1:32 |
: One every ten rounds
|
| 1:32 |
Darwin Barney to the Jays? |
| 1:32 |
: yeesh, but it would be an improvement
|
| 1:32 |
I gambled a bit and went with all upside on starting pitcher. Ended up with a rotation of Cole, Tanaka, Sonny Gray, Archer, and Ventura. What are the odds that 3 of these guys end the year as top 30 starters? Top 20? |
| 1:32 |
: pretty good actually
|
| 1:32 |
I drafted HanRam and Brad Miller in a dynasty league. Miller has 2B eligibility now, but that’s going to change, and all of the other managers are undervaluing both of them, so trades are unlikely. When does Hanley move to third and save me? |
| 1:33 |
: Maybe sometime this year. Or you fall out of contention and sell Hanley for a monster package.
|
| 1:33 |
Thoughts on Hamels this year? Accidentally drafted him instead of Sale and feeling a little bummed. |
| 1:33 |
: Oof. 170 IP maybe? Maybe good when in.
|
| 1:33 |
: MORE LIGHTENINGISH QS.
|
| 1:33 |
I got to thank you for the the Anibal advice. I kept Bailey over him because you were very confident in the injury red flags. |
| 1:33 |
I love trying new beer, and there is always new stuff out there, but at the same time, it frustrates me that i will never be able to try them all so sometimes i feel like giving up. and then i sometimes feel guilty for buying a 6 pack of something i already like when there are others to explore. CRAFT BEER PROBLEMS. |
| 1:34 |
Does Flores become a lot more interesting if he (somehow) qualifies for SS? |
| 1:34 |
