Eno Sarris: Unsure if he hits such great heights, but if the power takes off into mid-thirties, he has the contact rate to pair it with a great batting average. I have a bold pick that he’s top-five at his position this year.

12-team 5X5 standard roto–my rotation is bumgarner, tanaka dickey kazmir and lackey and I am debating dropping lackey for Toronto’s Hutchison…I don’t know anything about him and wonder what u think, since ur pretty good at eval pitching. thx

Eno Sarris: I think I’d stick with Lackey, but he’s fairly vanilla. Problem is, so’s Hutchison. Average slider, below-average but okay change, average four-seamer, below-average sinker. Supposedly his velocity has been up a bit, but I’m not super excited. I’d rather drop Lackey for a guy like Skaggs with more upside.

eno i got a slight problem, i blanked during my fantasy draft and got 3 RP in a 2 RP league, all of which are good, (chapman, Nathan, and Robertson) so i am now 1 SP short, ideally i would like to trade one of my closers for a starter but any suggestions? (10 team mixed) Also i have a strong outfield, strong corner infielders and weak starting pitching in second base. I was recently offered Cano, Salazar, and Posey/Bautista for Miggy, McCann/Dominic brown, and Nathan should i consider it no?

Eno Sarris: Don’t do the trade, go find a starter (replacement level is really high in your league), and worry about trading a reliever when you get chapman back.

Eno Sarris: Mostly just innings pitched, which I guess is based on our depth charts, which is based on trying to figure out if the shut down last year was a legitimate health thing or just a precautionary thing. His change-up is better than Wacha’s cutter, though, and their number one off speeders are similar in quality.

I just got back from Spring Training in Fort Myers (and Tampa) and let me tell you, I’ve never seen a game delayed by a swarm of Bees in LF. Carp yelled to the Ump, “THERE’S BEES!” *Stadium proceeded to play Flight of the Bumblebee* as a Pink Hat Red Sox fan trying to smack talk a Yankee fan, the Sox fan didn’t even know who they faced in the WS last year. I’m a Red Sox fan and I wanted to hit him over the head with an empty beer can. Thats my scouting report.

Eno Sarris: This is such a crapshoot. Usually Ks and velocity are the only way to go other than manager comments. Unfortunately, Broxton owns the velocity but Hoover owns the Ks. I’m going with elbow health as the tie breaker, as Broxton is just now pitching in games.

Eno Sarris: Really don’t think closer. Still think setup man. You probably hoping for starter at this point. Good news is, his stuff is excellent, and I think he could make the transition if his body holds up.

Eno Sarris: More interesting is how many innings he might pitch. I have him down for 150ish I think. He’d be a lot better if he could push that number. Still think a high-threes ERA is the more reasonable ERA projection. Not like he’ll get a ton of gas back.

Eno Sarris: I almost always prefer the hitter over the closer, and the money makes it easier. And yes, I know Adams has flaws. But at .260/25+ he’s got value even if he’s not as good this year.

Eno Sarris: I’ve been a little more optimistic since he’s looked good and everyone’s saying the right things. I went to $24 in my ottoneu points league, but that’s out of $400. I doubt I’d pay more than $12-15 though, there are just so many great names that have pitched in the MLB before.

Eno Sarris: I’ve been all over him, but I’m not changing my opinion too much based on spring. He is a little more valuable in that OPS league, and top eight is only stretching my projection a bit (I think I have him top-ten or twelve if I remember right).

I passed up Billy Hamilton in the 7th round of my draft and took Allen Craig instead. How badly did I screw up and do you believe in Hamilton’s hitting performance so far this spring?

Eno Sarris: Writing today about how small the sample is this spring — you barely have 1/3 the sample you need to say something interesting about strikeout rate. It’s better than him being bad… I think worst-case scenario, he bats from the right side most of the time and is a 2/5 time player with 45 steals or so.

But the analytical community thinks rbis are a bad measure and that ground balls to 2nd base is a bad outcome. How to you analytics deal with Harper’s intention of driving in run with a ground ball to make it a positive measure in your community? Thanks.

Eno Sarris: A ball in play is better than a strikeout with men on base. I think he’d actually be rewarded for that in the numbers.

Hey Eno! Big craft beer and baseball guy here too (from Toronto). I’m interested in using sabermetrics to help guide my fantasy draft this year. I’ve thought about trying to use a couple (2-3) sabermetrics to help guide my fantasy draft this year, but I’m not sure which ones would be the best to use. For position players, the stats categories are the traditional AVG, SLG, OBP, R, HR, RBI, SB, while for pitchers, its along the lines of W (KILL THE WIN!), WHIP, ERA, SO, BB. Which sabermetrics would you guys use to drive your draft choices given these categories? And would you simply look at last years data, or pooled data from the past 2-3 years (assuming the player is not a rookie/second year guy)?

Eno Sarris: The simplest projections take last year times five, the year before times three, year before times two, divide by ten, so if you can figure out a way to weight last year more than the year before, try it. Also, K and BB percentage, for both hitters and batters, are your guideposts. The simplest way to predict pitcher performance is K%-BB% and it’s really effective.

Dan, Jeff, and Dave frequently grouse about answering fantasy questions in their chats. Do you have issues with answering real-life questions in your chats? For instance, do you think Andrelton Simmons can repeat his spectacular 2013 defensive showing this season?

Eno Sarris: No problems. I think Simmons’ work is built on positioning (he puts himself deep in the hole knowing his arm can make the throw) and sneaky athleticism. But his kind of numbers haven’t been repeated yearly. So I expect regression but still think he’ll be a +10 SS or more.

In AL-LABR, I used my values built on sober projections (mostly just a straight meld of Steamer and ZiPS) and I ended up with a young team because nobody would pay the normal price for those numbers. People also don’t trust young players and if you get a pre-peak lineup, at least the variance on the projections is in your favor. A post-peak lineup really only has one way to go.

Eno Sarris: Fans come from fan projections, which you can input on each player page if you log in. ZiPs is Dan Szymborski, who chats here every Monday and might tell you something of how he does it. Jared Cross and his students made Steamer projections, which use result stats but also input things like fastball velocity and pitcher defense.
