Thoughts on Eovaldi after seeing him shut down the Tigers this week? Are you more bullish on him today than you were before the season started?

Eno Sarris: The use of the splitter is inconsistent from start to start. Dunno if I saw one in Detroit. That’s weird. But! I always thought he had enough with the curve and slider, so maybe that’s it. And he’s throwing more sliders, which was an underrated part of Garret Richards’ breakout. I like him.

Eno Sarris: Crap. I really like Chase Anderson. Nothing’s missing now that his two-seamer is improved and he’s getting more grounders. Curve, two changes, good command, Ks, few BBs. Second one is harder because I like Hahn but where the Ks and how much should we worry about innings. Him or Pom, might as well flip a coin. FWIW, I like Hahn’s change much much more than Pom’s.

when does K%-BB% stabilize. That’s the best in-season predictor for pitcher success, yes? With B. McCarthy at #2 in the league, how does Snider for him sound in a keep forever OBP/QS league? I’m looking for a pitcher with a lower ceiling but a very high floor. Phil Hughes could also be had for reasonable price.

Eno Sarris: I like B Mac better. Better breaking ball! Better league! K-BB is the best inseason predictor, but K takes 150 BF (they might be there now) and BB takes a bit longer.

Maikel Franco is hot at AAA again. Do you think he’ll be up soon, or does it depend on Howard getting traded (which seems unlikely)?

Eno Sarris: I thought at some point that Maikel Franco could ISO > .200 in bigs with a K% <16%, but now I’m a little more worried about the K rate, and therefore the batting average. But I actually still kept a little love for him. Howard seems like a release candidate more than anything. Something is going to happen this year.

Eno Sarris: Yeah the slider still has the late-season 2014 shape. it’s the fastball velocity and command that have suffered a bit.

When looking at Plate Discipline for batters, what do we want to see? Obviously less swings outside the zone, but generally is it better if a guy is swinging more or less? Also, I assume more contact in the zone is a good thing in general?

Eno Sarris: It’s hard to say prescriptive things for all players for anything other than swSTR, and even contact numbers vary. For a power hitter, it’s okay to swing and miss 10-14% of the time, if the power is there. Mostly, I look for big changes within one player’s line. That suggests either pressing or a new approach. Hard to then know which one it is, but at least those per-pitch numbers stabilize quicker and are more meaningful.

Eno Sarris: C Mart, Nelson, Walker. Nelson impressing me with that curve, but his command is iffy. Command is iffy on all three, but C Mart hast the “sit up and take notice” stuff to maybe overcome it.

Eno Sarris: I don’t get Wood. All the pitches are basically the same, but they have half the whiff rates. I think I’d still buy. More than Paxton, who maybe just isn’t going to K more than 7 per nine. And yes, I do think he’s improving, but I think his ceiling might be >3.5 ERA, 7k9.

Eno Sarris: It’s not really good. But 4s/CT/CB works from the right side against lefties, so I think it’s enough. They all come from the same slot and look the same until one drops a bunch, one drops a little, and one rises.

Eno Sarris: Not throwing as many fastballs and the slider is down a few ticks, which is weird. Velocity is important for the slider, too. I’m not that into him, I mean he’s already 30 and this is the worst park he’s played in, but you can’t sell now.

how do you rank closers? strictly on stuff, or do you take into account how good the team is and how many save situations there may be? that seems to be something that’s not easily predictable — not just how often a team will win, but how often save situations will arise.

Eno Sarris: Team factors only add a few save chances, and it’s mostly built on runs scored and the quality of the rest of the bullpen, from my research. Current closers I rank mostly on K and BB, maybe a nod to shakiness, like you have to discount Castro just a little for age, but not a lot, given how the league is getting younger. I rank backups by velocity and strikeout rate, and give a nod to righties, who get picked 2x more than lefties even given the relative population sizes. That’s all I’ve seen as even slightly predictive of closer change.

Eno Sarris: It’s a choice in taste. There’s a brewery here, Hermitage, and they have good beers made by other breweries in their facilities. But their brewer likes that dusty old malt-forward pale ale that was more popular in the Bitter Beer Face days. We’ve moved on.

Tell me about Bolsinger. I streamed him for today and was about to drop him, but then I started looking closer. The K/BB is ridiculous in AAA this year but he’s never shown anything like it. Everything old about him says fastball/curve guy but he’s talking this year about a slider he’s throwing and how surprised he was at how good it was. Am I way too early or could this be a legit change and a surprise real contributor?

Eno Sarris: One data point in Brooks for this year, and he went 80/20 cutter/curve. If he’s got a slider, cutter/curve/slider would be a unique arsenal, and nothing would go the other way… I think platoon splits would be a problem, maybe. At least the curve is a big one.

Look at my shares http://www.fangraphs.com/fa… Ottavino, Anderson, Shoemaker, deGrom, DeSclafani, Carrasco, Bauer .. it’s Kyle Gibson, Drew Hutchison and TJ House that have missed so far, and I still like Hutch, and Gibson was always a deep leaguer.
