What are your thoughts on Jon Singleton – Destroying AAA. Do you think he can be something meaningful to the Astros this season? The more elaborate the response… the more appreciated!! Thanks a lot.

Eno Sarris: He’ll be up. They locked him into a contract, so there’s no need to keep him cheap. I figure they’re looking at the construction of the major league roster and don’t want to lose an asset to bring him up. But that K% (19%) in Triple-A is his best, and that’s good news.

What do you expect from Jamie Garcia? How many innings until his shoulder explodes again?

Eno Sarris: He always does well by arsenal score type analysis because all of his pitches get good whiffs, but for some reason he never gets good K% and his WHIP is always high. I think he might benefit from a different pitching coach, actually. He might be a great K guy if he went for the grounder less often. Anyway, he’ll be good/okay, and then he’ll be hurt.

Eno Sarris: Gordon will hit more homers. He’ll probably get more plate appearances, so more R/RBI. Rusney will steal more and hit for better average, but in fewer PA. I’ll take Gordon.

Shouldn’t the value catcher’s provide by pitch framing be used as an argument in favor of using a digital strike zone? It rubs me the wrong way that the batter is being punished for doing something correct (laying off a ball). And with the new pitch framing metrics, this has been shown to alter the outcome of the game fairly significantly. Thoughts?

Eno Sarris: My piece went up about how framing has changed Andrew Cashner this year, so it’s crazy how framing gets its fingers into all parts of the game. But Questec/PFx got us this zone, too, so there are benefits and drawbacks. Here’s something I thought of recently: the human strike zone allows baseball to manipulate scoring without changing large-scale rules. Is that a benefit? Maybe. I might like a little more scoring without changing the mound height, for example.

Eno Sarris: I always thought he could. He was underprojected for power because of his injury last year. Of course, he’ll get to 15 homers in two streaks like this, that’s what he seems to do, but he’ll get there.

Eno Sarris: I will check this. It certainly seems this way, but then I give sours to some of my friends and I get the Bitter Beer face. “It’s vinegar, make salad dressing with it,” says my mom. (not a bad idea if it wasn’t so expensive, might be a good salad dressing)

Eno Sarris: I still see a lot of talent. Still stealing bases, still making more contact than average. Still patient. Still athletic. Pulling the ball too much this year, sure, and for some reason K-ing more. And that play to end the extra-inning game was embarassing. But I don’t think the team has other options, and I think the 23 year old has a lot of improvement left.

Do you have Gio as a top 30 SP rest of season? I know the underlying peripherals tell a more optimistic story than his ERA & WHIP. The eye test just seems to indicate he’s a bit more hittable and inconsistent this year.

Eno Sarris: Ground ball career high, swinging strike rate career low, many more sinkers. That seems reversable, if he wants to reverse it. Shape and velocity of his pitches is the same! Command problems haven’t completely returned.

Eno Sarris: You know, Feliz was at 93 and has okay swinging strike rates. Still possible he returns. But I do like Tolleson, better command than Burgos, the other new closer.

Eno Sarris: Saison Dupont. Goose Island Matilda. Firestone Walker Easy Jack. Rodenbach Grand Cru. If you like the first two, you might like Brett beers, which means you can check out some sours and saisons. The last one is a sour. The middle one is a session IPA, which isn’t super hoppy.

Had my first proper sour over the weekend, from a local outfit here in Queens called Singlecut. I thought it was kinda like salt and vinegar chips. The first taste was weird but by the fourth or fifth I was basically addicted and drank them all night. Any other sours available in the NYC market I should look for?

Eno Sarris: Hudson told me he’s trying to stretch out slowly this year, with an eye on the rotation next year. Burgos is worth your standard 11-16% just because any new closer is worth that, but his command can be terrible.

with regards to arbitration, would it be cheaper for a team to use 3 closers, each getting an equal amount of save chances or one set closer?

Eno Sarris: Each save is worth about $50k, some recent research showed, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was unequal. if you share saves, none of the pitchers can claim to be the sole closer. Other idea is just to use the guy closes to FA.

Eno Sarris: Change comes slowly. Some look past triple-crown numbers, but it’s easier to do so if they’re not actually a triple crown attached to it. That’s a singular event that gets a lot of attention.
