Eno Sarris: Look a little doughy, not doing well in the fifth, velocity dropping off, it’s hard to change fitness in the middle of the season, but I’m less worried about him than a guy like Keuchel at 88 mph.

Inquiring Monde: I think I know the answer to this q given your podcast/love of Nola, but here goes: trade Travis Shaw to get back Nola in a redraft?

Eno Sarris: Shaw looks like a .260/20 type third baseman, which I like a little less than a strong fantasy #2.

Houzer : Eno! Okay … how heavily should I be pursuing Keuchel? Give up one of Freeman, Puig, Ian Desmond, or Brantley?

Eno Sarris: Piece up today. Read it, because after it, I’m a little more confused. There are some good signs and bad signs, but i doubt he averages 90 for a season again, and that seems the most meaningful.

Travis: It’s early, but is Christian Yelich a keeper at $14 in a 12-team 5×5 + OPS?

Eno Sarris: His homer / grounder problem is less of a problem in OPS, so I say yes. Always going to have a plus batting average and like 25 homers plus steals. Could Brantley at some point.

Minty: Conforto or Mazara OBP dynasty?

Eno Sarris: I love them both so much. Don’t make me choose. Okay I know I have to. Fine. And not like ‘fine’ but like ‘fine’ the way your girlfriend says yeah fine we can see civil war instead of the movie I suggested. so. Conforto. I like Mazara’s swing and potential for plus batting average, but i love Conforto’s all field approach, power to all fields, and power more overall.

Young Jeezy: What do you think about Makiel Franco? What is a realistic expectation for him the ROS? He’s slump is kind of killing me.

Eno Sarris: He’s just missing a bit of power and BABIP. I think he’ll end the season at .275 with 26+ homers, so I’m taking the over on his projections.

Young Jeezy: Grandal or Realmuto ROS? 12 H2H points league.

Eno Sarris: Grandal is my mans.

Brad: John Lamb looked pretty good on Tuesday, can we expect a sub-4 ERA from him this year with solid K/9?

Eno Sarris: Velo was down a bit from where I wanted it. But otherwise, good start, and I like him for those numbers, if maybe 3.8ish or so.

Pie: Adam Jones just got dropped for some reason in my 12 team 5×5 H2H. How much of my FAAB should I shoot for?

Eno Sarris: That’s like a 51%er. If you made two pickups all year, you’d want one to be Adam Jones.

Josh: Grichuk has really struggled thus far, but his walk rate, strikeout rate and hard hit percentage all look good. Would you hold him or drop him for Ozuna in a 12 teamer?

Eno Sarris: I’d rather have Ozuna. I like that Ozuna is adding more fly balls this year, still hitting ball hard, should K less than Grichuk going forward.

Im_Dave_: Does Josh Bell get called up before the All-Star break?

Eno Sarris: no

NCKLM: Would stashing A.J. Reed given Tyler White’s recent struggles make sense? I have to think A.J.’s opportunity is looming. Is it worth dropping a bench player like Lamb, Ozuna or Khris Davis to do so?

Eno Sarris: Maybe Lamb, who’s losing some time to Drury, but I think White will get it going again.

Erik: Does the rise of shifts mean 3B is less of a good spot to hide lumbering slow sluggers than it used to be? But outfield corner defense might be being valued more than it used to, so LF is also a worse place to hide. Is this a real trend? If so, what are the effects?

Eno Sarris: Harder to be bad defensively anywhere. Bet we get universal DH soon as teams want a place to stash those guys.

Josh: Need some speed. Prefer Ketel Marte or Denard Span?

Eno Sarris: Span. All those balls in play mean more opportunities.

Houzer : Would you consider Sonny Gray and John Lester to be in the same tier of SP’s?

Eno Sarris: I like Gray more than projections but would put him under Lester, and in the same tier. Life is complicated!

Lucas Giolito: Am I alright?

Eno Sarris: I bet you still working on that change. That would explain BB% explosion. Still, Roark doing well enough that we may not see much of you.

Joe: DeShields is falling out of favor with Rangers brass. Is it Brinson time? Better NA stash, Brinson or Buxton?

Eno Sarris: Man, Brinson is striking out 12% of the time in Double-A! Are you kidding me? That was the only flaw in his game. He was dealing with some shoulder thing, but at the risk of recency bias, I’ll say that I’m more excited about his future than Buxton’s. That said, if it’s only about this year, Buxton’s road to playing time more open.

Joe: Straily possessing some top notch first pitch strike %, and swinging strike %. If it wasn’t for the park, I’d be all over. 12-team mixed worthy?

Eno Sarris: He has a good change and slide combo. I wish the velocity bump had been more substantial. I don’t see why he has to give up 1.7 hr/9 like Zips says. I’ll take something between depth charts (4.4/1.3) and Steamer (3.5/1.2) meaning he’s a 12-team streamer, probably away from home.

Hannah Hochevar: Hi Eno. Couple weeks ago you recommended Chris “Nail in the” Coghlan over Coco “Nut Water” Crisp, and yeah, they both suck, but Coghlan can suck at so many positions! Thanks!!

Eno Sarris: Man I thought Crisp was burnt. He looks a little better than Coghlan, but you have to think that neck will come back to bite him.

Joe: Most saves rest of season? Jepsen, May, Perkins, Meyer

Eno Sarris: May.

Ken M: Daniel Murphy is puling the ball more and smoking it. Is he just a better Daniel Murphy?

Eno Sarris: I keep waiting for the pitchers to adjust, but maybe it’s one of those switches they can’t unclick.

Zonk: What is wrong with Russell Martin? He has to be hurt or something, right?

Eno Sarris: Neck.

Jeffrey Loria Bobblehead Night: You had previously said you really liked Rodon in April, now you are saying his velocity is down and you’re concerned and he’s droppable. Can you go into more detail about your true feelings on Rodon (I have kept him for two years in a league and I am concerned)

Eno Sarris: I’m glad he kept the walks down. I’m glad he’s getting grounders. His slider is still the business. Not droppable in 12-team keepers. I’ve still got a share in an 11-team where I really need the upside at pitching. But for others that need to move on, I don’t like the velocity decrease and the swinging strike decrease.

rustydude: I’ve been patient with my sluggers and most of them have repaid me with recent hot streaks, Hanley, Abreu, Santana. And then there’s Fielder. At this point would you bench him for Plouffe or Pearce?

Eno Sarris: No.

Q-Ball: Shelby Miller….apparently a mechanical issue, but he continues to struggle after become aware of it. What’s up with Shelby Miller?

Eno Sarris: Unless the mechanical issue also gets the velocity back, I don’t think we’ll see the Atlanta version again.

TuesMorningBear: Does Boxberger get his job back when he’s healthy or has Colome pitched his way into the closers role?

Eno Sarris: I think the Rays like to spread saves around and keep everyone cheap. I would be surprised if Box didn’t get any saves.

Eno Sarris:

Erik: Are teams taking advantage of Jon Lester’s oddities as much as they could be? He can’t throw to first on a pickoff, and now he can’t throw to first on a comebacker. Should teams be bunting on him with anyone who is at all decent at bunting?

Eno Sarris: It’s the kind of thing you see in the postseason, and not as much in the middle of the season, isn’t it? But why?

Mark: Do you think Gregory Polanco will ever learn to hit LH pitching?

Eno Sarris: I think he’ll learn to not swing as much.

JNC: Hi Eno – In a recent chat, August said that Thor’s velocity may in part be accounted for by ‘intent’ suggesting he throws with ‘90% intent’ (read ‘effort’?) compared with other pitchers who throw with ‘70% intent’. Has the idea of ‘max effort’ come up in your discussions with pitchers? Thank you!

Eno Sarris: Hector Santiago said that he decided this year he would throw as hard as he could till they took the ball from him, which suggests that others leave more in the tank. In related news, Santiago’s velocity has been down big the last two starts.

Erik: Is shifting only relevant for a generation, when players are coming up having not faced a shift much while developing? Will the next generation of sluggers be trained from a young age to bunt to beat the shift enough to not face it regularly, leading to the natural decline of shifting?

Eno Sarris: I think it’s here to stay because it’s not just the infield shift we are talking about. There’s more to happen, too: left fielders swapping with right fielders, three outfielders up the middle, two outfielders and a rover in short right… love the shift because it’s here.

mario mendoza: Jon Gray’s new curveball. Is it good? Not recognized by PitchFX yet. Used it once, then 4 times, then 13 times. Plus, Jon Gray is just nasty. Are you buying any Jon Gray despite home park?

Eno Sarris: Might have some trouble with it at home, but yeah he looks like real deal.

Existential Fan: Was offered Conforto and Forsythe for Ortiz and Pence. Regular roto categories with walks added. Keep forever (8) and no round value. Was going to say no, but my 2B is Phillips with Travis stashed.

Eno Sarris: I say yes.

Eno Sarris: Soon, plays center field, in more than a backup role.

mario mendoza: Piscotty: emerging star? Prospect projection was “pretty good LF” but his MLB batted ball profile has made defied those early scouting reports

Eno Sarris: Little worried the fly ball numbers are down. But I like the swing changes he made and otherwise would think this level of power is sustainable.

Gum on Shoe: Matt Duffy is doing his best Aaron Rowand impression in SF. He looks a bit off and hasn’t been going oppo as much. More a case of the book being out on him to pitch down and in, or just squeezing the bat too tight?

Eno Sarris: I should write my piece. There are two Matt Duffys in there — one a spray hitting contact / average guy, the other a pull hitting power hitter. And the teams that know him best prefer the spray guy they can defend, so they pitch him that way.

Cy Young Winner Barry Zito: I’m new to advanced metrics. What can I look for in “breakout” pitchers to determine their viability? I’m thinking Aaron Sanchez, Aaron Nola, etc.

Eno Sarris: I like swinging strike rate, first pitch strike rate, velocity, and three-pitch pitching mix (third pitch > 10%) as a loose crib.

Texas Dolly: Tolleson’s going to implode and lose his job before end of May, right?

Eno Sarris: Been saying this. We’ll see.

Eno Sarris: Fiers.

Eno Sarris: I’ll take the bat with the upside. Cash is a big fastball whose fastball is smaller.

Erik: Is speed way overvalued as a tool? Last year, for example, the value provided by the top Baserunning score (8.3) would have ranked 66th on the Offensive value leaderboard. It seems that even elite speed is only about as useful as solid average hitting.

Eno Sarris: Very much yes. Very much. Paradoxically, it’s getting rarer and is undervalued in fantasy. Which sucks. Steals and saves are the worst.

Eno Sarris: Hard hit rate biased by outcomes, is my guess.

War2d2: Javy Baez has been unreal in the field the last couple games, making Machado/Arenado-esque plays at 3B. He also appears to have made some real changes at the plate–for instance, yesterday he intentionally cut down on his swing to ground a ball to the right side to get the run in from 3rd, and his K% is down to 21%. At what point does the Cubs’ best starting lineup include him as the everyday 3B and Bryant as the everyday LF?

Eno Sarris: I mean, I think it’s happening, slowly. La Stella has stone hands and Maddon doesn’t seem to like Soler for similar defense reasons, so even if Baez Ks more…

Wily Mo Money Mo Problems: When are the Met’s gonna say, “yeah, Noah, you probably shouldn’t take a 3-second leg lift out of the stretch anymore…?”

Eno Sarris: They probably like his velocity out of the stretch. I don’t think a few stolen bases make up for the Ks with runners on.

mario mendoza: any faith in Waino posting a 3.50 ERA ROS? Or is he toast?

Eno Sarris: I’m not buying.

Travis: Start kang over story at shortstop when kang comes off the dl?

Eno Sarris: I’m in this position and keeping both. It’s a sort of ideal solution, to me. Start Story at home and on the road against lefties, start Kang otherwise and use Kang for extra PAs at UT, 3B.

James: Should I drop Sean Doolittle? Looks like the job belongs to Madson, no?

Eno Sarris: Madson’s got a hold on that, yes.

Barves gotta Barve: Going out to Portland with some friends over Memorial Day, have any beer/brewery recommendations? There’s so much to choose from. Heard Deschutes is up there, is there anything else we can’t miss out there?

Eno Sarris: Bend is really what’s up. I think Breakside is the place to be, but Deschutes, with Abyss, the seasonal Black Butte, Red Chair (had it on nitro recently), they have some really great stuff beyond the flagships.

Eno Sarris: 6, 4, 7, 5.

Shawn: Shallow league – Rodon or R. Hill? Seems like Hill would be Rodon’s best case scenario this year, so just roll with Hill in a better park, no?

Eno Sarris: Redraft, yes.

Gum on Shoe: Been seeing a lot of young arms breeze through the lineup, get into trouble the second time around only to get yanked in the 5th i.e. Jose F, Manaea, Wood etc. in yesterday’s games…Is this a product of not having the “stuff” to through the lineup twice or arm fatigue this early in the season?

Eno Sarris: I’d guess it’s a way to manage pitches/innings.

Gerb: Any more confidence in Lindor’s offense? Through first 100 AB’s this year his wRC+ is still exactly the same at last year. good bet for 10-15 hr, 20-25sb and high OBP?

Eno Sarris: I do think he’s more of a .120 ISO than a .170, so more 10-12 than 14-16 homers, but everything else is just about right. I might have underrated his offense.

Matt: Eno, gonna be in Seattle next week, any good beers/breweries I should try while I am out there?

Eno Sarris: Cloudburst and Holy Mountain. Cloudburst is Pike Place, which is an awesome location, Holy Mountain best beer in city.

Eno Sarris: The hair makes it. He still hits the ball hard but that K% is going to start going the wrong way.

C: Is there a good strategy for chasing wins? I’m getting crushed in that category (and seem to always do poorly with wins), even though I have a solid staff (Schrezer, Jose Fernandez, Tanaka, Raisel, Odorizzi)

Eno Sarris: You’ll be fine. Wins are impossible.

Fruit Pie the Magician: Gausman has come back in filthylicious form. If he can stay healthy, can he sustain this…..Mirage or for reelz?

Eno Sarris: I love all the curves. I’m into it.

Curtis: If/When the DH is implemented universally, do you think good hitting pitchers will still bat occasionally?

Eno Sarris: Only when they pull the DH.

Jason: Carlos Correa’s defensive metrics look HORRIBLE this year. Any chance that he moves off SS in the near future? If so, where do you see him landing?

Eno Sarris: There were the whispers that he would be a third baseman later, but that team will keep him there for a while. He’s a hard worker and really wants to stick at short. I would stick with him.

Matt: Manaea? I didn’t get to watch either of his starts, but it seems the first one was good throughout most of it until he unraveled in the 5th – 2(?) of those runs gave up by ‘pen. Second start also uninspiring.

Eno Sarris: Still a keeper asset but I don’t think he’s a great redraft asset. The slider gets more slurvy late in games, he doesn’t have good glove side command, and he’s super predictable (95% fastballs) when behind.

Curtis: Other than a “17th inning have no subs left” situation, about how many times have pitchers pinch-hit for a position player?

Eno Sarris: Bumgarner recently did it in the ninth inning when the Giants were down by a run! But yeah, not much.

Rob: Re: speed question. I ran correlation tests earlier this year between the various cats (R, RBI, H, AVG, HR, SB, K, BB, etc.) and the sum of Z-Scores for players for each of those cats (which I called “value”). SB had lowest correlation coefficient with value… Runs had highest. 😀

Eno Sarris: Yeah I did something similar and came to the conclusion that saves and steals are the best to punt if you are going to punt because they aren’t correlated well with other stats.
