Hey Eno- you’ll be happy to know I had a hotdog today in honour of your impending chat!! A quick question- so whenever you guys write articles about someone you like it’s really difficult to put it in perspective, I mean in terms of how much do you like them… Say Corey Kluber- you like him, right? Carson and Chris love him, but is he a top 70 pitcher, a top 50 pitcher, top 30 pitcher (with error bars of course!)? And of the top of your head, who would an ‘established’ pitcher of similar standard be?

Eno Sarris: I try to end my articles with some context, a few players I might drop for them and so on, but it’s not easy to give prescriptive opinions like that without knowing settings. Kluber to me is still a risk, since he’s obviously had trouble with the cutter flattening in the past (high BABIPs, high HR/FB). I like him better than Porcello. Better than Garza? Dunno. Maybe on the level of the Oakland dudes. Safer at home.

Eno Sarris: Shoot, I’d say someone like Simmons because he was a pitcher and could be okay. Chris Davis pitched well enough the other day. Chris Davis? If I had to clone a pitcher… Carlos Zambrano? I know these answers are strange, but you need both sides of the game, and there are very few that can do both.

Thanks for the chat, Eno! How many innings (or other data) would be necessary to conclude that a given pitcher can sustain higher than usual strand rates? Are there any such cases? Even without attributing it to intangibles like grit, focus, etc., I struggle to accept that pitchers have as little control over it as the studies show. Halp!

Eno Sarris: I still like him, and would say that some of the reasons I loved him where: 1) Rest of position was scary. 2) age/peripherals were lined up perfectly. 1) is maybe less true now, and 2) is still true-ish. He can go .290 with 14/25 pace RoS still, but it won’t look great on the year. I’ll buy him cheap next year though.
